2 Chronicles 20 (WEBP)

[1] After this, the children of Moab, the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle.
[2] Then some came who told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Syria. Behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi).
[3] Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.
[4] Judah gathered themselves together to seek help from Yahweh. They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek Yahweh.
[5] Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in Yahweh’s house, before the new court;
[6] and he said, “Yahweh, the God of our fathers, aren’t you God in heaven? Aren’t you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you.
[7] Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the offspring§ of Abraham your friend forever?
[8] They lived in it, and have built you a sanctuary in it for your name, saying,
[9] ‘If evil comes on us—the sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this house, and before you (for your name is in this house), and cry to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’
[10] Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned away from them, and didn’t destroy them;
[11] behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit.
[12] Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us. We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
[13] All Judah stood before Yahweh, with their little ones, their wives, and their children.
[14] Then Yahweh’s Spirit came on Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, in the middle of the assembly;
[15] and he said, “Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat. Yahweh says to you, ‘Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed because of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s.
[16] Tomorrow, go down against them. Behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz. You will find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
[17] You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for Yahweh is with you.’ ”
[18] Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Yahweh, worshiping Yahweh.
[19] The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel, with an exceedingly loud voice.
[20] They rose early in the morning and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa. As they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh your God, so you will be established! Believe his prophets, so you will prosper.”
[21] When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who were to sing to Yahweh and give praise in holy array as they go out before the army, and say, “Give thanks to Yahweh, for his loving kindness endures forever.”
[22] When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck.
[23] For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. When they had finished the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy each other.
[24] When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were none who escaped.
[25] When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their plunder, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies with precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away. They took plunder for three days, it was so much.
[26] On the fourth day, they assembled themselves in Beracah° Valley, for there they blessed Yahweh. Therefore the name of that place was called “Beracah Valley” to this day.
[27] Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Yahweh had made them to rejoice over their enemies.
[28] They came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments, harps, and trumpets to Yahweh’s house.
[29] The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries when they heard that Yahweh fought against the enemies of Israel.
[30] So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.
[31] So Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah. He was thirty-five years old when he began to reign. He reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi.
[32] He walked in the way of Asa his father, and didn’t turn away from it, doing that which was right in Yahweh’s eyes.
[33] However the high places were not taken away, and the people had still not set their hearts on the God of their fathers.
[34] Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is included in the book of the kings of Israel.
[35] After this, Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel. The same did very wickedly.
[36] He joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish. They made the ships in Ezion Geber.
[37] Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, Yahweh has destroyed your works.” The ships were wrecked, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

2 Chronicles 20 (KJVS)

[1] It came to pass after this H310 also, [that] the children H1121 of Moab H4124, and the children H1121 of Ammon H5983, and with them [other] beside the Ammonites H5984, came H935 (8804) against Jehoshaphat H3092 to battle H4421.
[2] Then there came H935 (8799) some that told H5046 (8686) Jehoshaphat H3092, saying H559 (8800), There cometh H935 (8802) a great H7227 multitude H1995 against thee from beyond H5676 the sea H3220 on this side Syria H758; and, behold, they [be] in Hazazontamar H2688, which [is] Engedi H5872.
[3] And Jehoshaphat H3092 feared H3372 (8799), and set H5414 (8799) himself H6440 to seek H1875 (8800) the LORD H3068, and proclaimed H7121 (8799) a fast H6685 throughout H5921 all Judah H3063.
[4] And Judah H3063 gathered themselves together H6908 (8735), to ask H1245 (8763) [help] of the LORD H3068: even out of all the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 they came H935 (8804) to seek H1245 (8763) the LORD H3068.
[5] And Jehoshaphat H3092 stood H5975 (8799) in the congregation H6951 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389, in the house H1004 of the LORD H3068, before H6440 the new H2319 court H2691,
[6] And said H559 (8799), O LORD H3068 God H430 of our fathers H1, [art] not thou God H430 in heaven H8064? and rulest H4910 (8802) [not] thou over all the kingdoms H4467 of the heathen H1471? and in thine hand H3027 [is there not] power H3581 and might H1369, so that none is able to withstand H3320 (8692) thee?
[7] [Art] not thou our God H430, [who] didst drive out H3423 (8689) the inhabitants H3427 (8802) of this land H776 before H6440 thy people H5971 Israel H3478, and gavest H5414 (8799) it to the seed H2233 of Abraham H85 thy friend H157 (8802) for ever H5769?
[8] And they dwelt H3427 (8799) therein, and have built H1129 (8799) thee a sanctuary H4720 therein for thy name H8034, saying H559 (8800),
[9] If, [when] evil H7451 cometh H935 (8799) upon us, [as] the sword H2719, judgment H8196, or pestilence H1698, or famine H7458, we stand H5975 (8799) before H6440 this house H1004, and in thy presence H6440, (for thy name H8034 [is] in this house H1004,) and cry H2199 (8799) unto thee in our affliction H6869, then thou wilt hear H8085 (8799) and help H3467 (8686).
[10] And now, behold, the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 and Moab H4124 and mount H2022 Seir H8165, whom thou wouldest not let H5414 (8804) Israel H3478 invade H935 (8800), when they came out H935 (8800) of the land H776 of Egypt H4714, but they turned H5493 (8804) from them, and destroyed H8045 (8689) them not;
[11] Behold, [I say, how] they reward H1580 (8802) us, to come H935 (8800) to cast us out H1644 (8763) of thy possession H3425, which thou hast given us to inherit H3423 (8689).
[12] O our God H430, wilt thou not judge H8199 (8799) them? for we have no might H3581 against H6440 this great H7227 company H1995 that cometh H935 (8802) against us; neither know H3045 (8799) we H587 what to do H6213 (8799): but our eyes H5869 [are] upon thee.
[13] And all Judah H3063 stood H5975 (8802) before H6440 the LORD H3068, with H1571 their little ones H2945, their wives H802, and their children H1121.
[14] Then upon Jahaziel H3166 the son H1121 of Zechariah H2148, the son H1121 of Benaiah H1141, the son H1121 of Jeiel H3273, the son H1121 of Mattaniah H4983, a Levite H3881 of the sons H1121 of Asaph H623, came the Spirit H7307 of the LORD H3068 in the midst H8432 of the congregation H6951;
[15] And he said H559 (8799), Hearken H7181 (8685) ye, all Judah H3063, and ye inhabitants H3427 (8802) of Jerusalem H3389, and thou king H4428 Jehoshaphat H3092, Thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068 unto you, Be not afraid H3372 (8799) nor dismayed H2865 (8735) by reason H6440 of this great H7227 multitude H1995; for the battle H4421 [is] not yours, but God’s H430.
[16] To morrow H4279 go ye down H3381 (8798) against them: behold, they come up H5927 (8802) by the cliff H4608 of Ziz H6732; and ye shall find H4672 (8804) them at the end H5490 of the brook H5158, before H6440 the wilderness H4057 of Jeruel H3385.
[17] Ye shall not [need] to fight H3898 (8736) in this H2063 [battle]: set H3320 (8690) yourselves, stand H5975 (8798) ye [still], and see H7200 (8798) the salvation H3444 of the LORD H3068 with you, O Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389: fear H3372 (8799) not, nor be dismayed H2865 (8735); to morrow H4279 go out H3318 (8798) against H6440 them: for the LORD H3068 [will be] with you.
[18] And Jehoshaphat H3092 bowed H6915 (8799) his head with [his] face H639 to the ground H776: and all Judah H3063 and the inhabitants H3427 (8802) of Jerusalem H3389 fell H5307 (8804) before H6440 the LORD H3068, worshipping H7812 (8692) the LORD H3068.
[19] And the Levites H3881, of the children H1121 of the Kohathites H6956, and of the children H1121 of the Korhites H7145, stood up H6965 (8799) to praise H1984 (8763) the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478 with a loud H1419 voice H6963 on high H4605.
[20] And they rose early H7925 (8686) in the morning H1242, and went forth H3318 (8799) into the wilderness H4057 of Tekoa H8620: and as they went forth H3318 (8800), Jehoshaphat H3092 stood H5975 (8804) and said H559 (8799), Hear H8085 (8798) me, O Judah H3063, and ye inhabitants H3427 (8802) of Jerusalem H3389; Believe H539 (8685) in the LORD H3068 your God H430, so shall ye be established H539 (8735); believe H539 (8685) his prophets H5030, so shall ye prosper H6743 (8685).
[21] And when he had consulted H3289 (8735) with the people H5971, he appointed H5975 (8686) singers H7891 (8789) unto the LORD H3068, and that should praise H1984 (8764) the beauty H1927 of holiness H6944, as they went out H3318 (8800) before H6440 the army H2502 (8803), and to say H559 (8802), Praise H3034 (8685) the LORD H3068; for his mercy H2617 [endureth] for ever H5769.
[22] And when H6256 they began H2490 (8689) to sing H7440 and to praise H8416, the LORD H3068 set H5414 (8804) ambushments H693 (8764) against the children H1121 of Ammon H5983, Moab H4124, and mount H2022 Seir H8165, which were come H935 (8802) against Judah H3063; and they were smitten H5062 (8735).
[23] For the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 and Moab H4124 stood up H5975 (8799) against the inhabitants H3427 (8802) of mount H2022 Seir H8165, utterly to slay H2763 (8687) and destroy H8045 (8687) [them]: and when they had made an end H3615 (8763) of the inhabitants H3427 (8802) of Seir H8165, every one H376 helped H5826 (8804) to destroy H4889 another H7453.
[24] And when Judah H3063 came H935 (8804) toward the watch tower H4707 (8677) H4708 in the wilderness H4057, they looked H6437 (8799) unto the multitude H1995, and, behold, they [were] dead bodies H6297 fallen H5307 (8802) to the earth H776, and none escaped H6413.
[25] And when Jehoshaphat H3092 and his people H5971 came H935 (8799) to take away H962 (8800) the spoil H7998 of them, they found H4672 (8799) among them in abundance H7230 both riches H7399 with the dead bodies H6297, and precious H2532 jewels H3627, which they stripped off H5337 (8762) for themselves, more than H369 they could carry away H4853: and they were three H7969 days H3117 in gathering H962 (8802) of the spoil H7998, it was so much H7227.
[26] And on the fourth H7243 day H3117 they assembled H6950 (8738) themselves in the valley H6010 of Berachah H1294; for there they blessed H1288 (8765) the LORD H3068: therefore the name H8034 of the same place H4725 was called H7121 (8804), The valley H6010 of Berachah H1294, unto this day H3117.
[27] Then they returned H7725 (8799), every man H376 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389, and Jehoshaphat H3092 in the forefront H7218 of them, to go again H7725 (8800) to Jerusalem H3389 with joy H8057; for the LORD H3068 had made them to rejoice H8055 (8765) over their enemies H341 (8802).
[28] And they came H935 (8799) to Jerusalem H3389 with psalteries H5035 and harps H3658 and trumpets H2689 unto the house H1004 of the LORD H3068.
[29] And the fear H6343 of God H430 was on all the kingdoms H4467 of [those] countries H776, when they had heard H8085 (8800) that the LORD H3068 fought H3898 (8738) against the enemies H341 (8802) of Israel H3478.
[30] So the realm H4438 of Jehoshaphat H3092 was quiet H8252 (8799): for his God H430 gave him rest H5117 (8799) round about H5439.
[31] And Jehoshaphat H3092 reigned H4427 (8799) over Judah H3063: [he was] thirty H7970 and five H2568 years H8141 old H1121 when he began to reign H4427 (8800), and he reigned H4427 (8804) twenty H6242 and five H2568 years H8141 in Jerusalem H3389. And his mother’s H517 name H8034 [was] Azubah H5806 the daughter H1323 of Shilhi H7977.
[32] And he walked H3212 (8799) in the way H1870 of Asa H609 his father H1, and departed H5493 (8804) not from it, doing H6213 (8800) [that which was] right H3477 in the sight H5869 of the LORD H3068.
[33] Howbeit the high places H1116 were not taken away H5493 (8804): for as yet the people H5971 had not prepared H3559 (8689) their hearts H3824 unto the God H430 of their fathers H1.
[34] Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 of Jehoshaphat H3092, first H7223 and last H314, behold, they [are] written H3789 (8803) in the book H1697 of Jehu H3058 the son H1121 of Hanani H2607, who [is] mentioned H5927 (8717) in the book H5612 of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478.
[35] And after H310 this did Jehoshaphat H3092 king H4428 of Judah H3063 join H2266 (8694) himself with Ahaziah H274 king H4428 of Israel H3478, who did H6213 (8800) very wickedly H7561 (8689):
[36] And he joined H2266 (8762) himself with him to make H6213 (8800) ships H591 to go H3212 (8800) to Tarshish H8659: and they made H6213 (8799) the ships H591 in Eziongeber H6100.
[37] Then Eliezer H461 the son H1121 of Dodavah H1735 of Mareshah H4762 prophesied H5012 (8691) against Jehoshaphat H3092, saying H559 (8800), Because thou hast joined H2266 (8692) thyself with Ahaziah H274, the LORD H3068 hath broken H6555 (8804) thy works H4639. And the ships H591 were broken H7665 (8735), that they were not able H6113 (8804) to go H3212 (8800) to Tarshish H8659.

Young’s Literal Translation

2 Chronicles 20 (YLT)

[1] And it cometh to pass after this, the sons of Moab have come in, and the sons of Ammon, and with them of the peoples, against Jehoshaphat to battle.
[2] And they come in and declare to Jehoshaphat, saying, ‘Come against thee hath a great multitude from beyond the sea, from Aram, and lo, they are in Hazezon-Tamar-it is En-Gedi.’
[3] And Jehoshaphat feareth, and setteth his face to seek to Jehovah, and proclaimeth a fast over all Judah;
[4] and Judah is gathered to inquire of Jehovah; also, from all the cities of Judah they have come in to seek Jehovah.
[5] And Jehoshaphat standeth in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of Jehovah, at the front of the new court,
[6] and saith, ‘O Jehovah, God of our fathers, art not Thou-God in the heavens? yea, Thou art ruling over all kingdoms of the nations, and in Thy hand is power and might, and there is none with Thee to station himself.
[7] ‘Art not Thou our God? Thou hast dispossessed the inhabitants of this land from before Thy people Israel, and dost give it to the seed of Abraham Thy friend to the age,
[8] and they dwell in it, and build to Thee in it a sanctuary for Thy name, saying,
[9] If evil doth come upon us-sword, judgment, and pestilence, and famine-we stand before this house, and before Thee, for Thy name is in this house, and cry unto Thee out of our distress, and Thou dost hear and save.
[10] ‘And now, lo, sons of Ammon, and Moab, and mount Seir, whom Thou didst not grant to Israel to go in against in their coming out of the land of Egypt, for they turned aside from off them and destroyed them not,
[11] and lo, they are recompensing to us-to come in to drive us out of Thy possession, that Thou hast caused us to possess.
[12] ‘O our God, dost Thou not execute judgment upon them? for there is no power in us before this great multitude that hath come against us, and we know not what we do, but on Thee are our eyes.’
[13] And all Judah are standing before Jehovah, also their infants, their wives, and their sons.
[14] And upon Jahaziel, son of Zechariah, son of Benaiah, son of Jeiel, son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, hath the Spirit of Jehovah been, in the midst of the assembly,
[15] and he saith, ‘Attend, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and O king Jehoshaphat, Thus said Jehovah to you, Ye fear not, nor are afraid of the face of this great multitude, for not for you is the battle, but for God.
[16] To-morrow, go ye down against them, lo, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz, and ye have found them in the end of the valley, the front of the wilderness of Jeruel.
[17] Not for you to fight in this; station yourselves, stand, and see the salvation of Jehovah with you, O Judah and Jerusalem-be not afraid nor fear ye-to-morrow go out before them, and Jehovah is with you.’
[18] And Jehoshaphat boweth-face to the earth-and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem have fallen before Jehovah, to bow themselves to Jehovah.
[19] And the Levites, of the sons of the Kohathites, and of the sons of the Korhites, rise to give praise to Jehovah, God of Israel, with a loud voice on high.
[20] And they rise early in the morning, and go out to the wilderness of Tekoa, and in their going out Jehoshaphat hath stood and saith, ‘Hear me, O Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem, remain stedfast in Jehovah your God, and be stedfast; remain stedfast in His prophets, and prosper.’
[21] And he taketh counsel with the people, and appointeth singers to Jehovah, and those giving praise to the honour of holiness, in the going out before the armed men, and saying, ‘Give ye thanks to Jehovah, for to the age is His kindness.’
[22] And at the time they have begun with singing and praise, Jehovah hath put ambushments against the sons of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, who are coming in to Judah, and they are smitten,
[23] and the sons of Ammon stand up, and Moab, against the inhabitants of mount Seir, to devote and to destroy, and at their finishing with the inhabitants of Seir, they helped, a man against his neighbour, to destroy.
[24] And Judah hath come in unto the watch-tower, to the wilderness, and they look unto the multitude, and lo, they are carcases fallen to the earth, and there is none escaped,
[25] and Jehoshaphat cometh in, and his people, to seize their spoil, and they find among them, in abundance, both goods and carcases, and desirable vessels, and they take spoil to themselves without prohibition, and they are three days seizing the spoil, for it is abundant.
[26] And on the fourth day they have been assembled at the valley of Blessing, for there they blessed Jehovah: therefore they have called the name of that place, ‘Valley of Blessing,’ unto this day.
[27] And they turn back, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat at their head, to go back unto Jerusalem with joy, for Jehovah hath made them rejoice over their enemies.
[28] And they come in to Jerusalem with psalteries, and with harps, and with trumpets, unto the house of Jehovah.
[29] And there is a fear of God on all kingdoms of the lands in their hearing that Jehovah hath fought with the enemies of Israel,
[30] and the kingdom of Jehoshaphat is quiet, and his God giveth rest to him round about.
[31] And Jehoshaphat reigneth over Judah, a son of thirty and five years in his reigning, and twenty and five years he hath reigned in Jerusalem, and the name of his mother is Azubah daughter of Shilhi.
[32] And he walketh in the way of his father Asa, and hath not turned aside from it, to do that which is right in the eyes of Jehovah.
[33] Only, the high places have not turned aside, and still the people have not prepared their heart for the God of their fathers.
[34] And the rest of the matters of Jehoshaphat, the first and the last, lo, they are written among the matters of Jehu son of Hanani, who hath been mentioned on the book of the kings of Israel.
[35] And after this hath Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, (he did wickedly in so doing),
[36] and he joineth him with himself to make ships to go to Tarshish, and they make ships in Ezion-Geber,
[37] and prophesy doth Eliezer son of Dodavah, of Mareshah, against Jehoshaphat, saying, ‘For thy joining thyself with Ahaziah, Jehovah hath broken up thy works;’ and the ships are broken, and have not retained power to go unto Tarshish.
