Jeremiah 8 (WEBP)

[1] “At that time,” says Yahweh, “they will bring the bones of the kings of Judah, the bones of his princes, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves.
[2] They will spread them before the sun, the moon, and all the army of the sky, which they have loved, which they have served, after which they have walked, which they have sought, and which they have worshiped. They will not be gathered or be buried. They will be like dung on the surface of the earth.
[3] Death will be chosen rather than life by all the residue that remain of this evil family, that remain in all the places where I have driven them,” says Yahweh of Armies.
[4] “Moreover you shall tell them, ‘Yahweh says: “ ‘Do men fall, and not rise up again? Does one turn away, and not return?
[5] Why then have the people of Jerusalem fallen back by a perpetual backsliding? They cling to deceit. They refuse to return.
[6] I listened and heard, but they didn’t say what is right. No one repents of his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?” Everyone turns to his course, as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.
[7] Yes, the stork in the sky knows her appointed times. The turtledove, the swallow, and the crane observe the time of their coming; but my people don’t know Yahweh’s law.
[8] “ ‘How do you say, “We are wise, and Yahweh’s law is with us”? But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has made that a lie.
[9] The wise men are disappointed. They are dismayed and trapped. Behold, they have rejected Yahweh’s word. What kind of wisdom is in them?
[10] Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to those who will possess them. For everyone from the least even to the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely.
[11] They have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, “Peace, peace,” when there is no peace.
[12] Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed. They couldn’t blush. Therefore they will fall among those who fall. In the time of their visitation they will be cast down, says Yahweh.
[13] “ ‘I will utterly consume them, says Yahweh. No grapes will be on the vine, no figs on the fig tree, and the leaf will fade. The things that I have given them will pass away from them.’ ”
[14] “Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves! Let’s enter into the fortified cities, and let’s be silent there; for Yahweh our God has put us to silence, and given us poisoned water to drink, because we have sinned against Yahweh.
[15] We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay!
[16] The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan. The whole land trembles at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they have come, and have devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell therein.”
[17] “For, behold, I will send serpents, adders among you, which will not be charmed; and they will bite you,” says Yahweh.
[18] Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow! My heart is faint within me.
[19] Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off: “Isn’t Yahweh in Zion? Isn’t her King in her?” “Why have they provoked me to anger with their engraved images, and with foreign idols?”
[20] “The harvest is past. The summer has ended, and we are not saved.”
[21] For the hurt of the daughter of my people, I am hurt. I mourn. Dismay has taken hold of me.
[22] Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then isn’t the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

Jeremiah 8 (KJVS)

[1] At that time H6256, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068, they shall bring out H3318 (8686) the bones H6106 of the kings H4428 of Judah H3063, and the bones H6106 of his princes H8269, and the bones H6106 of the priests H3548, and the bones H6106 of the prophets H5030, and the bones H6106 of the inhabitants H3427 (8802) of Jerusalem H3389, out of their graves H6913:
[2] And they shall spread H7849 (8804) them before the sun H8121, and the moon H3394, and all the host H6635 of heaven H8064, whom they have loved H157 (8804), and whom they have served H5647 (8804), and after H310 whom they have walked H1980 (8804), and whom they have sought H1875 (8804), and whom they have worshipped H7812 (8694): they shall not be gathered H622 (8735), nor be buried H6912 (8735); they shall be for dung H1828 upon the face H6440 of the earth H127.
[3] And death H4194 shall be chosen H977 (8738) rather than life H2416 by all the residue H7611 of them that remain H7604 (8737) of this evil H7451 family H4940, which remain H7604 (8737) in all the places H4725 whither I have driven H5080 (8689) them, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068 of hosts H6635.
[4] Moreover thou shalt say H559 (8804) unto them, Thus saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068; Shall they fall H5307 (8799), and not arise H6965 (8799)? shall he turn away H7725 (8799), and not return H7725 (8799)?
[5] Why [then] is this people H5971 of Jerusalem H3389 slidden back H7725 (8790) by a perpetual H5329 (8737) backsliding H4878? they hold H2388 (8689) fast deceit H8649, they refuse H3985 (8765) to return H7725 (8800).
[6] I hearkened H7181 (8689) and heard H8085 (8799), [but] they spake not aright H1696 (8762): no man H376 repented H5162 (8737) him of H5921 his wickedness H7451, saying H559 (8800), What have I done H6213 (8804)? every one turned H7725 (8804) to his course H4794, as the horse H5483 rusheth H7857 (8802) into the battle H4421.
[7] Yea, the stork H2624 in the heaven H8064 knoweth H3045 (8804) her appointed times H4150; and the turtle H8449 and the crane H5483 and the swallow H5693 observe H8104 (8804) the time H6256 of their coming H935 (8800); but my people H5971 know H3045 (8804) not the judgment H4941 of the LORD H3068.
[8] How do ye say H559 (8799), We [are] wise H2450, and the law H8451 of the LORD H3068 [is] with us? Lo, certainly H403 in vain H8267 made H6213 (8804) he [it]; the pen H5842 of the scribes H5608 (8802) [is] in vain H8267.
[9] The wise H2450 [men] are ashamed H3001 (8689), they are dismayed H2865 (8804) and taken H3920 (8735): lo, they have rejected H3988 (8804) the word H1697 of the LORD H3068; and what wisdom H2451 [is] in them?
[10] Therefore will I give H5414 (8799) their wives H802 unto others H312, [and] their fields H7704 to them that shall inherit H3423 (8802) [them]: for every one from the least H6996 even unto the greatest H1419 is given H1214 (8802) to covetousness H1215, from the prophet H5030 even unto the priest H3548 every one dealeth H6213 (8802) falsely H8267.
[11] For they have healed H7495 (8762) the hurt H7667 of the daughter H1323 of my people H5971 slightly H7043 (8738), saying H559 (8800), Peace H7965, peace H7965; when [there is] no peace H7965.
[12] Were they ashamed H3001 (8689) when they had committed H6213 (8804) abomination H8441? nay, they were not at all H954 (8800) ashamed H954 (8799), neither could H3045 (8804) they blush H3637 (8736): therefore shall they fall H5307 (8799) among them that fall H5307 (8802): in the time H6256 of their visitation H6486 they shall be cast down H3782 (8735), saith H559 (8804) the LORD H3068.
[13] I will surely H622 (8800) consume H5486 (8686) them, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068: [there shall be] no grapes H6025 on the vine H1612, nor figs H8384 on the fig tree H8384, and the leaf H5929 shall fade H5034 (8804); and [the things that] I have given H5414 (8799) them shall pass away H5674 (8799) from them.
[14] Why do we sit still H3427 (8802)? assemble H622 (8734) yourselves, and let us enter H935 (8799) into the defenced H4013 cities H5892, and let us be silent H1826 (8735) there: for the LORD H3068 our God H430 hath put us to silence H1826 (8689), and given us water H4325 of gall H7219 to drink H8248 (8686), because we have sinned H2398 (8804) against the LORD H3068.
[15] We looked H6960 (8763) for peace H7965, but no good H2896 [came; and] for a time H6256 of health H4832, and behold trouble H1205!
[16] The snorting H5170 of his horses H5483 was heard H8085 (8738) from Dan H1835: the whole land H776 trembled H7493 (8804) at the sound H6963 of the neighing H4684 of his strong ones H47; for they are come H935 (8799), and have devoured H398 (8799) the land H776, and all H4393 that is in it; the city H5892, and those that dwell H3427 (8802) therein.
[17] For, behold, I will send H7971 (8764) serpents H5175, cockatrices H6848, among you, which [will] not [be] charmed H3908, and they shall bite H5391 (8765) you, saith H5002 (8803) the LORD H3068.
[18] [When] I would comfort H4010 myself against sorrow H3015, my heart H3820 [is] faint H1742 in me.
[19] Behold the voice H6963 of the cry H7775 of the daughter H1323 of my people H5971 because of them that dwell in a far H4801 country H776: [Is] not the LORD H3068 in Zion H6726? [is] not her king H4428 in her? Why have they provoked me to anger H3707 (8689) with their graven images H6456, [and] with strange H5236 vanities H1892?
[20] The harvest H7105 is past H5674 (8804), the summer H7019 is ended H3615 (8804), and we are not saved H3467 (8738).
[21] For the hurt H7667 of the daughter H1323 of my people H5971 am I hurt H7665 (8717); I am black H6937 (8804); astonishment H8047 hath taken hold H2388 (8689) on me.
[22] [Is there] no balm H6875 in Gilead H1568; [is there] no physician H7495 (8802) there? why then H3588 is not the health H724 of the daughter H1323 of my people H5971 recovered H5927 (8804)?

Young’s Literal Translation

Jeremiah 8 (YLT)

[1] At that time, an affirmation of Jehovah, They bring the bones of the kings of Judah, And the bones of its princes, And the bones of the priests, And the bones of the prophets, And the bones of inhabitants of Jerusalem, Out of their graves,
[2] And have spread them to sun, and to moon, And to all the host of the heavens, that they have loved, And that they have served, And that they have walked after, And that they have sought, And to which they have bowed themselves, They are not gathered, nor buried, They are for dung on the face of the ground.
[3] And chosen is death rather than life By all the remnant who are left of this evil family, In all the remaining places, whither I have driven them, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts.
[4] And thou hast said unto them: Thus said Jehovah, Do they fall, and not rise? Doth he turn back, and not return?
[5] Wherefore hath this people of Jerusalem Turned back-a perpetual backsliding? They have kept hold on deceit, They have refused to turn back.
[6] I have given attention, yea, I hearken, They do not speak right, No man hath repented of his wickedness, Saying, What have I done? Every one hath turned to his courses, As a horse is rushing into battle.
[7] Even a stork in the heavens hath known her seasons, And turtle, and swallow, and crane, Have watched the time of their coming, And-My people have not known the judgment of Jehovah.
[8] How do ye say, We are wise, And the law of Jehovah is with us? Surely, lo, falsely it hath wrought, The false pen of scribes.
[9] Ashamed have been the wise, They have been affrighted, and are captured, Lo, against a word of Jehovah they kicked, And the wisdom of what-have they?
[10] Therefore, I give their wives to others, Their fields to dispossessors, For from the least even unto the greatest, Every one is gaining dishonest gain, From prophet even unto priest, every one is dealing falsely.
[11] And they heal the breach of the daughter of my people slightly, Saying, Peace, peace! and there is no peace.
[12] They were ashamed when they did abomination! Yea, they are not at all ashamed, And blushing they have not known, Therefore, they do fall among falling ones, In the time of their inspection they stumble, said Jehovah.
[13] I utterly consume them, an affirmation of Jehovah, There are no grapes in the vine, Yea, there are no figs in the fig-tree, And the leaf hath faded, And the strength they have passeth from them.
[14] Wherefore are we sitting still? Be gathered, and we go in to the fenced cities, And we are silent there, For Jehovah our God hath made us silent, Yea, He causeth us to drink water of gall, For we have sinned against Jehovah.
[15] Looking for peace-and there is no good, For a time of healing, and lo, terror.
[16] From Dan hath been heard the snorting of his horses, From the voice of the neighings of his mighty ones, Trembled hath all the land, And they come in and consume the land and its fulness, The city and the inhabitants in it.
[17] For, lo, I am sending among you serpents, Vipers that have no charmer, And they have bitten you, an affirmation of Jehovah.
[18] My refreshing for me is sorrow, For me my heart is sick.
[19] Lo, the voice of a cry of the daughter of my people from a land afar off, Is Jehovah not in Zion? is her king not in her? Wherefore have they provoked Me with their graven images, With the vanities of a foreigner?
[20] Harvest hath passed, summer hath ended, And we-we have not been saved.
[21] For a breach of the daughter of my people have I been broken, I have been black, astonishment hath seized me.
[22] Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? For wherefore hath not the health of the daughter of my people gone up?
