James 4:7-10 (ASV, KJVS, YLT)
American Standard VersionJames 41. Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members?2. Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, because ye ask not. 3. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures. 4. Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. 5. Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? 6. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. 7. Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye doubleminded. 9. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. 10. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall exalt you. 11. Speak not one against another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. 12. One only is the lawgiver and judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbor? 13. Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: 14. whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. 16. But now ye glory in your vauntings: all such glorying is evil. 17. To him therefore that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. |
King James w/Strong's #'sJames 41. From whence <4159> [come] wars <4171> and <2532> fightings <3163> among <1722> you <5213>? [come they] not <3756> hence <1782>, [even] of <1537> your <5216> lusts <2237> that war <4754> (PresMidPtc) in <1722> your <5216> members <3196>?2. Ye lust <1937> (PresActInd), and <2532> have <2192> (PresActInd) not <3756>: ye kill <5407> (PresActInd), and <2532> desire to have <2206> (PresActInd), and <2532> cannot <3756> <1410> (PresMidPasDepInd) obtain <2013> (Aor2ActInf): ye fight <3164> (PresMidPasDepInd) and <2532> war <4170> (PresActInd), yet <1161> ye have <2192> (PresActInd) not <3756>, because <1223> ye <5209> ask <0154> (PresMidInf) not <3361>. 3. Ye ask <0154> (PresActInd), and <2532> receive <2983> (PresActInd) not <3756>, because <1360> ye ask <0154> (PresMidInd) amiss <2560>, that <2443> ye may consume <1159> (AorActSubj) [it] upon <1722> your <5216> lusts <2237>. 4. Ye adulterers <3432> and <2532> adulteresses <3428>, know ye <1492> (PerfActInd) not <3756> that <3754> the friendship <5373> of the world <2889> is <2076> (PresInd) enmity <2189> with God <2316>? whosoever <3739> <0302> therefore <3767> will be <1511> (PresInf) <1014> (AorPasDepSubj) a friend <5384> of the world <2889> is <2525> (PresPasInd) the enemy <2190> of God <2316>. 5. <2228> Do ye think <1380> (PresActInd) that <3754> the scripture <1124> saith <3004> (PresActInd) in vain <2761>, The spirit <4151> that <3739> dwelleth <2730> (AorActInd) in <1722> us <2254> lusteth <1971> (PresActInd) to <4314> envy <5355>? 6. But <1161> he giveth <1325> (PresActInd) more <3187> grace <5485>. Wherefore <1352> he saith <3004> (PresActInd), God <2316> resisteth <0498> (PresMidInd) the proud <5244>, but <1161> giveth <1325> (PresActInd) grace <5485> unto the humble <5011>. 7. Submit yourselves <5293> (Aor2PasImpr) therefore <3767> to God <2316>. Resist <0436> (Aor2ActImpr) the devil <1228>, and <2532> he will flee <5343> (FutMidDepInd) from <0575> you <5216>. 8. Draw nigh <1448> (AorActImpr) to God <2316>, and <2532> he will draw nigh <1448> (FutActInd) to you <5213>. Cleanse <2511> (AorActImpr) [your] hands <5495>, [ye] sinners <0268>; and <2532> purify <0048> (AorActImpr) [your] hearts <2588>, [ye] double minded <1374>. 9. Be afflicted <5003> (AorActImpr), and <2532> mourn <3996> (AorActImpr), and <2532> weep <2799> (AorActImpr): let your <5216> laughter <1071> be turned <3344> (Aor2PasImpr) to <1519> mourning <3997>, and <2532> [your] joy <5479> to <1519> heaviness <2726>. 10. Humble yourselves <5013> (AorPasImpr) in the sight <1799> of the Lord <2962>, and <2532> he shall lift <5312> you <5209> up <5312> (FutActInd). 11. Speak <2635> not <3361> evil <2635> (PresActImpr) one of another <0240>, brethren <0080>. He that speaketh evil <2635> (PresActPtc) of [his] brother <0080>, and <2532> judgeth <2919> (PresActPtc) his <0846> brother <0080>, speaketh evil <2635> (PresActInd) of the law <3551>, and <2532> judgeth <2919> (PresActInd) the law <3551>: but <1161> if <1487> thou judge <2919> (PresActInd) the law <3551>, thou art <1488> (PresInd) not <3756> a doer <4163> of the law <3551>, but <0235> a judge <2923>. 12. There is <2076> (PresInd) one <1520> lawgiver <3550>, who <3588> is able <1410> (PresMidPasDepPtc) to save <4982> (AorActInf) and <2532> to destroy <0622> (AorActInf): who <5101> art <1488> (PresInd) thou <4771> that <3739> judgest <2919> (PresActInd) another <2087>? 13. Go to <0033> (PresActImpr) now <3568>, ye that say <3004> (PresActPtc), To day <4594> or <2532> to morrow <0839> we will go <4198> (AorMidDepSubj) into <1519> such <3592> a city <4172>, and <2532> continue <4160> (AorActSubj) <4160> (FutActInd) there <1563> a <1520> year <1763>, and <2532> buy and sell <1710> (AorMidDepSubj) <1710> (FutMidDepInd), and <2532> get gain <2770> (AorActSubj) <2770> (FutActInd): 14. Whereas <3748> ye know <1987> (PresMidPasDepInd) not <3756> what <3588> [shall be] on the morrow <0839>. For <1063> what <4169> [is] your <5216> life <2222>? It is <2076> (PresInd) even <1063> a vapour <0822>, that <4314> appeareth for <5316> (PresMidPasPtc) a little time <3641>, and <1161> then <1899> vanisheth away <0853> (PresPasPtc). 15. For that <0473> ye <5209> [ought] to say <3004> (PresActInf), If <1437> the Lord <2962> will <2309> (AorActSubj), <2532> we shall live <2198> (AorActSubj) <2198> (FutActInd), and <2532> do <4160> (AorActSubj) <4160> (FutActInd) this <5124>, or <2228> that <1565>. 16. But <1161> now <3568> ye rejoice <2744> (PresMidPasDepInd) in <1722> your <5216> boastings <0212>: all <3956> such <5108> rejoicing <2746> is <2076> (PresInd) evil <4190>. 17. Therefore <3767> to him that knoweth <1492> (PerfActPtc) to do <4160> (PresActInf) good <2570>, and <2532> doeth <4160> (PresActPtc) [it] not <3361>, to him <0846> it is <2076> (PresInd) sin <0266>. |
Young's Literal TranslationJames 41. Whence are wars and fightings among you? not thence-out of your passions, that are as soldiers in your members?2. ye desire, and ye have not; ye murder, and are zealous, and are not able to attain; ye fight and war, and ye have not, because of your not asking; 3. ye ask, and ye receive not, because evilly ye ask, that in your pleasures ye may spend it. 4. Adulterers and adulteresses! have ye not known that friendship of the world is enmity with God? whoever, then, may counsel to be a friend of the world, an enemy of God he is set. 5. Do ye think that emptily the Writing saith, 'To envy earnestly desireth the spirit that did dwell in us,' 6. and greater grace he doth give, wherefore he saith, 'God against proud ones doth set Himself up, and to lowly ones He doth give grace?' 7. be subject, then, to God; stand up against the devil, and he will flee from you; 8. draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you; cleanse hands, ye sinners! and purify hearts, ye two-souled! 9. be exceeding afflicted, and mourn, and weep, let your laughter to mourning be turned, and the joy to heaviness; 10. be made low before the Lord, and He shall exalt you. 11. Speak not one against another, brethren; he who is speaking against a brother, and is judging his brother, doth speak against law, and doth judge law, and if law thou dost judge, thou art not a doer of law but a judge; 12. one is the lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy; thou-who art thou that dost judge the other? 13. Go, now, ye who are saying, 'To-day and to-morrow we will go on to such a city, and will pass there one year, and traffic, and make gain;' 14. who do not know the thing of the morrow; for what is your life? for it is a vapour that is appearing for a little, and then is vanishing; 15. instead of your saying, 'If the Lord may will, we shall live, and do this or that;' 16. and now ye glory in your pride; all such glorying is evil; 17. to him, then, knowing to do good, and not doing, sin it is to him. |
