1 Peter 2:11 (ASV, KJVS, YLT)
American Standard Version1 Peter 21. Putting away therefore all wickedness, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings,2. as newborn babes, long for the spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation; 3. if ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious: 4. unto whom coming, a living stone, rejected indeed of men, but with God elect, precious, 5. ye also, as living stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6. Because it is contained in scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame. 7. For you therefore that believe is the preciousness: but for such as disbelieve, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner; 8. and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence; for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. 9. But ye are a elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may show forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: 10. who in time past were no people, but now are the people of God: who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. 11. Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lust, which war against the soul; 12. having your behavior seemly among the Gentiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evil-doers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 13. Be subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme; 14. or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well. 15. For so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: 16. as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God. 17. Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. 18. Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. 19. For this is acceptable, if for conscience toward God a man endureth griefs, suffering wrongfully. 20. For what glory is it, if, when ye sin, and are buffeted for it, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye shall take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21. For hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22. who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23. who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously: 24. who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed. 25. For ye were going astray like sheep; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. |
King James w/Strong's #'s1 Peter 21. Wherefore <3767> laying aside <0659> (Aor2MidPtc) all <3956> malice <2549>, and <2532> all <3956> guile <1388>, and <2532> hypocrisies <5272>, and <2532> envies <5355>, and <2532> all <3956> evil speakings <2636>,2. As <5613> newborn <0738> babes <1025>, desire <1971> (AorActImpr) the sincere <0097> milk <1051> of the word <3050>, that <2443> ye may grow <0837> (AorPasSubj) thereby <1722> <0846>: 3. If so be <1512> ye have tasted <1089> (AorMidDepInd) that <3754> the Lord <2962> [is] gracious <5543>. 4. To <4314> whom <3739> coming <4334> (PresMidPasDepPtc), [as unto] a living <2198> (PresActPtc) stone <3037>, disallowed <0593> (PerfPasPtc) indeed <3303> of <5259> men <0444>, but <1161> chosen <1588> of <3844> God <2316>, [and] precious <1784>, 5. Ye <0846> also <2532>, as <5613> lively <2198> (PresActPtc) stones <3037>, are built up <3618> (PresPasInd) a spiritual <4152> house <3624>, an holy <0040> priesthood <2406>, to offer up <0399> (AorActInf) spiritual <4152> sacrifices <2378>, acceptable <2144> to God <2316> by <1223> Jesus <2424> Christ <5547>. 6. Wherefore <1352> also <2532> it is contained <4023> (PresActInd) in <1722> the scripture <1124>, Behold <2400> (Aor2ActImpr), I lay <5087> (PresActInd) in <1722> Sion <4622> a chief corner <0204> stone <3037>, elect <1588>, precious <1784>: and <2532> he that believeth <4100> (PresActPtc) on <1909> him <0846> shall <2617> not be <3364> confounded <2617> (AorPasSubj). 7. Unto you <5213> therefore <3767> which <3588> believe <4100> (PresActPtc) [he is] precious <5092>: but <1161> unto them which be disobedient <0544> (PresActPtc), the stone <3037> which <3739> the builders <3618> (PresActPtc) disallowed <0593> (AorActInd), the same <3778> is made <1096> (AorPasDepInd) <1519> the head <2776> of the corner <1137>, 8. And <2532> a stone <3037> of stumbling <4348>, and <2532> a rock <4073> of offence <4625>, [even to them] which <3739> stumble <4350> (PresActInd) at the word <3056>, being disobedient <0544> (PresActPtc): whereunto <1519> <3739> also <2532> they were appointed <5087> (AorPasInd). 9. But <1161> ye <5210> [are] a chosen <1588> generation <1085>, a royal <0934> priesthood <2406>, an holy <0040> nation <1484>, a peculiar <1519> <4047> people <2992>; that <3704> ye should shew forth <1804> (AorActSubj) the praises <0703> of him who hath called <2564> (AorActPtc) you <5209> out of <1537> darkness <4655> into <1519> his <0846> marvellous <2298> light <5457>: 10. Which <3588> in time past <4218> [were] not <3756> a people <2992>, but <1161> [are] now <3568> the people <2992> of God <2316>: which <3588> had <1653> not <3756> obtained mercy <1653> (PerfPasPtc), but <1161> now <3568> have obtained mercy <1653> (AorPasPtc). 11. Dearly beloved <0027>, I beseech <3870> (PresActInd) [you] as <5613> strangers <3941> and <2532> pilgrims <3927>, abstain from <0567> (PresMidInf) fleshly <4559> lusts <1939>, which <3748> war <4754> (PresMidInd) against <2596> the soul <5590>; 12. Having <2192> (PresActPtc) your <5216> conversation <0391> honest <2570> among <1722> the Gentiles <1484>: that <2443>, whereas <1722> <3739> they speak against <2635> (PresActInd) you <5216> as <5613> evildoers <2555>, they may <1392> by <1537> [your] good <2570> works <2041>, which they shall behold <2029> (AorActPtc), glorify <1392> (AorActSubj) God <2316> in <1722> the day <2250> of visitation <1984>. 13. <3767> Submit yourselves <5293> (Aor2PasImpr) to every <3956> ordinance <2937> of man <0442> for <1223> the Lord's sake <2962>: whether it be <1535> to the king <0935>, as <5613> supreme <5242> (PresActPtc); 14. Or <1535> unto governors <2232>, as <5613> unto them that are sent <3992> (PresPasPtc) by <1223> him <0846> for <1519> <3303> the punishment <1557> of evildoers <2555>, and <1161> for the praise <1868> of them that do well <0017>. 15. For <3754> so <3779> is <2076> (PresInd) the will <2307> of God <2316>, that with well doing <0015> (PresActPtc) ye may put to silence <5392> (PresActInf) the ignorance <0056> of foolish <0878> men <0444>: 16. As <5613> free <1658>, and <2532> not <3361> using <2192> (PresActPtc) [your] liberty <1657> for <5613> a cloke <1942> of maliciousness <2549>, but <0235> as <5613> the servants <1401> of God <2316>. 17. Honour <5091> (AorActImpr) all <3956> [men]. Love <0025> (PresActImpr) the brotherhood <0081>. Fear <5399> (PresMidPasDepImpr) God <2316>. Honour <5091> (PresActImpr) the king <0935>. 18. Servants <3610>, [be] subject <5293> (PresPasPtc) to [your] masters <1203> with <1722> all <3956> fear <5401>; not <3756> only <3440> to the good <0018> and <2532> gentle <1933>, but <0235> also <2532> to the froward <4646>. 19. For <1063> this <5124> [is] thankworthy <5485>, if <1487> a man <5100> for <1223> conscience <4893> toward God <2316> endure <5297> (PresActInd) grief <3077>, suffering <3958> (PresActPtc) wrongfully <0095>. 20. For <1063> what <4169> glory <2811> [is it], if <1487>, when <2532> ye be buffeted <2852> (PresPasPtc) for your faults <0264> (PresActPtc), ye shall take it patiently <5278> (FutActInd)? but <0235> if <1487>, when ye do well <0015> (PresActPtc), and <2532> suffer <3958> (PresActPtc) [for it], ye take it patiently <5278> (FutActInd), this <5124> [is] acceptable <5485> with <3844> God <2316>. 21. For <1063> even <1519> hereunto <5124> were ye called <2564> (AorPasInd): because <3754> Christ <5547> also <2532> suffered <3958> (Aor2ActInd) for <5228> us <2257>, leaving <5277> (PresActPtc) us <2254> an example <5261>, that <2443> ye should follow <1872> (AorActSubj) his <0846> steps <2487>: 22. Who <3739> did <4160> (AorActInd) no <3756> sin <0266>, neither <3761> was guile <1388> found <2147> (AorPasInd) in <1722> his <0846> mouth <4750>: 23. Who <3739>, when he was reviled <3058> (PresPasPtc), reviled <0486> not <3756> again <0486> (ImpfActInd); when he suffered <3958> (PresActPtc), he threatened <0546> (ImpfActInd) not <3756>; but <1161> committed <3860> (ImpfActInd) [himself] to him that judgeth <2919> (PresActPtc) righteously <1346>: 24. Who <3739> his own self <0846> bare <0399> (AorActInd) our <2257> sins <0266> in <1722> his own <0846> body <4983> on <1909> the tree <3586>, that <2443> we <2198>, being dead <0581> (Aor2MidDepPtc) to sins <0266>, should live <2198> (AorActSubj) unto righteousness <1343>: by <3739> whose <0846> stripes <3468> ye were healed <2390> (AorPasInd). 25. For <1063> ye were <2258> (ImpfInd) as <5613> sheep <4263> going astray <4105> (PresPasPtc); but <0235> are <1994> now <3568> returned <1994> (Aor2PasDepSubj) unto <1909> the Shepherd <4166> and <2532> Bishop <1985> of your <5216> souls <5590>. |
Young's Literal Translation1 Peter 21. Having put aside, then, all evil, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envyings, and all evil speakings,2. as new-born babes the word's pure milk desire ye, that in it ye may grow, 3. if so be ye did taste that the Lord is gracious, 4. to whom coming-a living stone-by men, indeed, having been disapproved of, but with God choice, precious, 5. and ye yourselves, as living stones, are built up, a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6. Wherefore, also, it is contained in the Writing: 'Lo, I lay in Zion a chief corner-stone, choice, precious, and he who is believing on him may not be put to shame;' 7. to you, then, who are believing is the preciousness; and to the unbelieving, a stone that the builders disapproved of, this one did become for the head of a corner, 8. and a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence-who are stumbling at the word, being unbelieving,-to which also they were set; 9. and ye are a choice race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people acquired, that the excellences ye may shew forth of Him who out of darkness did call you to His wondrous light; 10. who were once not a people, and are now the people of God; who had not found kindness, and now have found kindness. 11. Beloved, I call upon you, as strangers and sojourners, to keep from the fleshly desires, that war against the soul, 12. having your behaviour among the nations right, that in that which they speak against you as evil-doers, of the good works having beheld, they may glorify God in a day of inspection. 13. Be subject, then, to every human creation, because of the Lord, whether to a king, as the highest, 14. whether to governors, as to those sent through him, for punishment, indeed, of evil-doers, and a praise of those doing good; 15. because, so is the will of God, doing good, to put to silence the ignorance of the foolish men; 16. as free, and not having the freedom as the cloak of the evil, but as servants of God; 17. to all give ye honour; the brotherhood love ye; God fear ye; the king honour ye. 18. The domestics! be subjecting yourselves in all fear to the masters, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the cross; 19. for this is gracious, if because of conscience toward God any one doth endure sorrows, suffering unrighteously; 20. for what renown is it, if sinning and being buffeted, ye do endure it? but if, doing good and suffering for it, ye do endure, this is gracious with God, 21. for to this ye were called, because Christ also did suffer for you, leaving to you an example, that ye may follow his steps, 22. who did not commit sin, nor was guile found in his mouth, 23. who being reviled-was not reviling again, suffering-was not threatening, and was committing himself to Him who is judging righteously, 24. who our sins himself did bear in his body, upon the tree, that to the sins having died, to the righteousness we may live; by whose stripes ye were healed, 25. for ye were as sheep going astray, but ye turned back now to the shepherd and overseer of your souls. |
