[1] Paul, looking steadfastly at the council, said, “Brothers, I have lived before God in all good conscience until today.” [2] The high priest, Ananias, commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth. [3] Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! Do you sit to judge me according to the law, and command me to be struck contrary to the law?” [4] Those who stood by said, “Do you malign God’s high priest?” [5] Paul said, “I didn’t know, brothers, that he was high priest. For it is written, ‘You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.’ ” [6] But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, “Men and brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. Concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged!” [7] When he had said this, an argument arose between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the crowd was divided. [8] For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angel, nor spirit; but the Pharisees confess all of these. [9] A great clamor arose, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees’ part stood up, and contended, saying, “We find no evil in this man. But if a spirit or angel has spoken to him, let’s not fight against God!” [10] When a great argument arose, the commanding officer, fearing that Paul would be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them and bring him into the barracks. [11] The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, “Cheer up, Paul, for as you have testified about me at Jerusalem, so you must testify also at Rome.” [12] When it was day, some of the Jews banded together and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. [13] There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy. [14] They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, “We have bound ourselves under a great curse to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. [15] Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you tomorrow, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near.” [16] But Paul’s sister’s son heard they were lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul. [17] Paul summoned one of the centurions and said, “Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him.” [18] So he took him and brought him to the commanding officer and said, “Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you.” [19] The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, “What is it that you have to tell me?” [20] He said, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though intending to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him. [21] Therefore don’t yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse to neither eat nor drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you.” [22] So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, “Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me.” [23] He called to himself two of the centurions, and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers to go as far as Caesarea, with seventy horsemen and two hundred men armed with spears, at the third hour of the night.” [24] He asked them to provide mounts, that they might set Paul on one, and bring him safely to Felix the governor. [25] He wrote a letter like this: [26] “Claudius Lysias to the most excellent governor Felix: Greetings. [27] “This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be killed by them when I came with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman. [28] Desiring to know the cause why they accused him, I brought him down to their council. [29] I found him to be accused about questions of their law, but not to be charged with anything worthy of death or of imprisonment. [30] When I was told that the Jews lay in wait for the man, I sent him to you immediately, charging his accusers also to bring their accusations against him before you. Farewell.” [31] So the soldiers, carrying out their orders, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. [32] But on the next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks. [33] When they came to Caesarea and delivered the letter to the governor, they also presented Paul to him. [34] When the governor had read it, he asked what province he was from. When he understood that he was from Cilicia, he said, [35] “I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive.” He commanded that he be kept in Herod’s palace.

[1] AndG1161 Paul,G3972 earnestly beholdingG816(AorActPtc) the council,G4892 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) MenG435 [and] brethren,G80 IG1473 have livedG4176(PerfPasInd) in allG3956 goodG18 conscienceG4893 before GodG2316 untilG891 thisG5026 day.G2250 [2] AndG1161 the high priestG749 AnaniasG367 commandedG2004(AorActInd) them that stood byG3936(PerfActPtc) himG846 to smiteG5180(PresActInf) himG846 on the mouth.G4750 [3] ThenG5119 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) PaulG3972 untoG4314 him,G846 GodG2316 shallG3195(PresActInd) smiteG5180(PresActInf) thee,G4571 [thou] whitedG2867(PerfPasPtc) wall:G5109 forG2532 sittestG2521(PresMidPasDepInd) thouG4771 to judgeG2919(PresActPtc) meG3165 afterG2596 the law,G3551 andG2532 commandestG2753(PresActInd) meG3165 to be smittenG5180(PresPasInf) contrary to the law?G3891(PresActPtc) [4] AndG1161 they that stood byG3936(PerfActPtc) said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Revilest thouG3058(PresActInd) God’sG2316 high priest?G749 [5] ThenG5037 saidG5346(ImpfInd) Paul,G3972 I wistG1492(PlupfActInd) not,G3756 brethren,G80 thatG3754 he wasG2076(PresInd) the high priest:G749 forG1063 it is written,G1125(PerfPasInd) Thou shaltG2046 notG3756 speakG2046(FutActInd) evilG2560 of the rulerG758 of thyG4675 people.G2992 [6] ButG1161 when PaulG3972 perceivedG1097(Aor2ActPtc) thatG3754 the oneG1520 partG3313 wereG2076(PresInd) Sadducees,G4523 andG1161 the otherG2087 Pharisees,G5330 he cried outG2896(AorActInd) inG1722 the council,G4892 MenG435 [and] brethren,G80 IG1473 amG1510(PresInd) a Pharisee,G5330 the sonG5207 of a Pharisee:G5330 ofG4012 the hopeG1680 andG2532 resurrectionG386 of the deadG3498 IG1473 am called in question.G2919(PresPasInd) [7] AndG1161 when heG846 hadG2980 soG5124 said,G2980(AorActPtc) there aroseG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) a dissensionG4714 between the PhariseesG5330 andG2532 the Sadducees:G4523 andG2532 the multitudeG4128 was divided.G4977(AorPasInd) [8] ForG1063 the SadduceesG4523 sayG3004(PresActInd) that there isG1511(PresInf) noG3361 resurrection,G386 neitherG3366 angel,G32 norG3383 spirit:G4151 butG1161 the PhariseesG5330 confessG3670(PresActInd) both.G297 [9] AndG1161 there aroseG1096(Aor2MidDepInd) a greatG3173 cry:G2906 andG2532 the scribesG1122 [that were] of the Pharisees’G5330 partG3313 arose,G450(Aor2ActPtc) and strove,G1264(ImpfMidPasDepInd) saying,G3004(PresActPtc) We findG2147(PresActInd) noG3762 evilG2556 inG1722 thisG5129 man:G444 butG1161 ifG1487 a spiritG4151 orG2228 an angelG32 hath spokenG2980(AorActInd) to him,G846 let usG2313 notG3361 fightG2313(PresActSubj) against God. [10] AndG1161 when there aroseG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) a greatG4183 dissension,G4714 the chief captain,G5506 fearingG2125(AorPasPtc) lestG3361 PaulG3972 should have been pulled in piecesG1288(AorPasSubj) ofG5259 them,G846 commandedG2753(AorActInd) the soldiersG4753 to go down,G2597(Aor2ActPtc) and to takeG726 himG846 by forceG726(AorActInf) fromG1537 amongG3319 them,G846 andG5037 to bringG71(PresActInf) [him] intoG1519 the castle.G3925 [11] AndG1161 the nightG3571 followingG1966(PresPtc) the LordG2962 stood byG2186(Aor2ActPtc) him,G846 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Be of good cheer,G2293(PresActImpr) Paul:G3972 forG1063 asG5613 thou hast testifiedG1263(AorMidDepInd) ofG4012 meG1700 inG1519 Jerusalem,G2419 soG3779 mustG1163(PresInd) thouG4571 bear witnessG3140(AorActInf) alsoG2532 atG1519 Rome.G4516 [12] AndG1161 when it wasG1096(Aor2MidDepPtc) day,G2250 certainG5100 of the JewsG2453 banded together,G4160(AorActPtc) and boundG332 themselvesG1438 under a curse,G332(AorActInd) sayingG3004(PresActPtc) that they wouldG5315 neitherG3383 eatG5315(Aor2ActInf) norG3383 drinkG4095(Aor2ActInf) tillG2193 they had killedG615(PresActSubj) Paul.G3972 [13] AndG1161 they wereG2258(ImpfInd) more thanG4119 fortyG5062 whichG3588 had madeG4160(PerfActPtc) thisG5026 conspiracy.G4945 [14] And theyG3748 came toG4334(Aor2ActPtc) the chief priestsG749 andG2532 elders,G4245 and said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) We have boundG332(AorActInd) ourselvesG1438 under a great curse,G331 that we will eatG1089(AorMidDepInf) nothingG3367 untilG2193 we have slainG615(PresActSubj) Paul.G3972 [15] NowG3568 thereforeG3767 yeG5210 withG4862 the councilG4892 signifyG1718(AorActImpr) to the chief captainG5506 thatG3704 he bringG2609 himG846 downG2609(Aor2ActSubj) untoG4314 youG5209 to morrow,G839 asG5613 though ye wouldG3195(PresActPtc) enquireG1231(PresActInf) something more perfectlyG197 concerningG4012 him:G846 andG1161 we,G2249 or everG4253 heG846 come near,G1448(AorActInf) areG2070(PresInd) readyG2092 to killG337(Aor2ActInf) him.G846 [16] AndG1161 when Paul’sG3972 sister’sG79 sonG5207 heardG191(AorActPtc) of their lying in wait,G1749 he wentG3854(Aor2MidDepPtc) andG2532 enteredG1525(Aor2ActPtc) intoG1519 the castle,G3925 and toldG518(AorActInd) Paul.G3972 [17] ThenG1161 PaulG3972 calledG4341(AorMidDepPtc) oneG1520 of the centurionsG1543 unto [him], and said,G5346(ImpfInd) BringG520(Aor2ActImpr) thisG5126 young manG3494 untoG4314 the chief captain:G5506 forG1063 he hathG2192(PresActInd) a certain thingG5100 to tellG518(AorActInf) him.G846 [18] SoG3767 he tookG3880(Aor2ActPtc) him,G846 and broughtG71(Aor2ActInd) [him] toG4314 the chief captain,G5506 andG2532 said,G5346(PresInd) PaulG3972 the prisonerG1198 calledG4341(AorMidDepPtc) meG3165 unto [him], and prayed meG2065(AorActInd) to bringG71(Aor2ActInf) thisG5126 young manG3494 untoG4314 thee,G4571 who hathG2192(PresActPtc) somethingG5100 to sayG2980(AorActInf) unto thee.G4671 [19] ThenG1161 the chief captainG5506 tookG1949(Aor2MidDepPtc) himG846 by the hand,G5495 andG2532 went [with him] asideG402(AorActPtc) privately,G2596 and askedG4441(ImpfMidPasDepInd) [him], WhatG5101 isG2076(PresInd) thatG3739 thou hastG2192(PresActInd) to tellG518(AorActInf) me?G3427 [20] AndG1161 he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) The JewsG2453 have agreedG4934(Aor2MidInd) to desireG2065(AorActInf) theeG4571 thatG3704 thou wouldest bring downG2609(Aor2ActSubj) PaulG3972 to morrowG839 intoG1519 the council,G4892 asG5613 though they wouldG3195(PresActPtc) enquireG4441(PresMidPasDepInf) somewhatG5100 ofG4012 himG846 more perfectly.G197 [21] ButG3767 doG3982 notG3361 thouG4771 yieldG3982(AorPasSubj) unto them:G846 forG1063 there lie in wait forG1748(PresActInd) himG846 ofG1537 themG846 more thanG4119 fortyG5062 men,G435 whichG3748 have boundG332 themselvesG1438 with an oath,G332(AorActInd) that they willG5315 neitherG3383 eatG5315(Aor2ActInf) norG3383 drinkG4095(Aor2ActInf) tillG2193 they have killedG337(AorActSubj) him:G846 andG2532 nowG3568 are theyG1526(PresInd) ready,G2092 looking forG4327(PresMidPasDepPtc) a promiseG1860 fromG575 thee.G4675 [22] SoG3303 the chief captainG5506 [then] letG630 the young manG3494 depart,G630(AorActInd) and chargedG3853(AorActPtc) [him, See thou] tellG1583(AorActInf) no manG3367 thatG3754 thou hast shewedG1718(AorActInd) these thingsG5023 toG4314 me.G3165 [23] AndG2532 he called untoG4341(AorMidDepPtc) [him]G5100 twoG1417 centurions,G1543 saying,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Make readyG2090(AorActImpr) two hundredG1250 soldiersG4757 toG3704 goG4198(AorPasDepSubj) toG2193 Caesarea,G2542 andG2532 horsemenG2460 threescore and ten,G1440 andG2532 spearmenG1187 two hundred,G1250 atG575 the thirdG5154 hourG5610 of the night;G3571 [24] AndG5037 provideG3936(AorActInf) [them] beasts,G2934 thatG2443 they may setG1913 PaulG3972 on,G1913(AorActPtc) and bring [him] safeG1295(AorActSubj) untoG4314 FelixG5344 the governor.G2232 [25] And he wroteG1125(AorActPtc) a letterG1992 afterG4023(PresActPtc) thisG5126 manner:G5179 [26] ClaudiusG2804 LysiasG3079 unto the most excellentG2903 governorG2232 FelixG5344 [sendeth] greeting.G5463(PresActInf) [27] ThisG5126 manG435 was takenG4815(AorPasPtc) ofG5259 the Jews,G2453 andG2532 shouldG3195(PresActPtc) have been killedG337(PresPasInf) ofG5259 them:G846 then came IG2186(Aor2ActPtc) withG4862 an army,G4753 and rescuedG1807(Aor2MidInd) him,G846 having understoodG3129(Aor2ActPtc) thatG3754 he wasG2076(PresInd) a Roman.G4514 [28] AndG1161 whenG1014 I wouldG1014(PresMidPasDepPtc) have knownG1097(Aor2ActInf) the causeG156 whereforeG1223 they accusedG1458(ImpfActInd) him,G846 I broughtG2609 himG846 forthG2609(Aor2ActInd) intoG1519 theirG846 council:G4892 [29] WhomG3739 I perceivedG2147(Aor2ActInd) to be accusedG1458(PresPasPtc) ofG4012 questionsG2213 of theirG846 law,G3551 butG1161 to haveG2192(PresActPtc) nothingG3367 laid to his chargeG1462 worthyG514 of deathG2288 orG2228 of bonds.G1199 [30] AndG1161 when it was toldG3377(AorPasPtc) meG3427 how thatG5259 the JewsG2453 laid waitG1917 forG1519 the man,G435 I sentG3992(AorActInd) straightwayG1824 toG4314 thee,G4571 and gave commandmentG3853(AorActPtc) to his accusersG2725 alsoG2532 to sayG3004(PresActInf) beforeG1909 theeG4675 what [they had] againstG4314 him.G846 Farewell.G4517(PerfPasImpr) [31] ThenG3767 the soldiers,G4757 asG2596 it was commandedG1299(PerfPasPtc) them,G846 tookG353(Aor2ActPtc) Paul,G3972 and broughtG71(Aor2ActInd) [him] byG1223 nightG3571 toG1519 Antipatris.G494 [32] On the morrowG1887 they leftG1439(AorActPtc) the horsemenG2460 to goG4198(PresMidPasDepInf) withG4862 him,G846 and returnedG5290(AorActInd) toG1519 the castle:G3925 [33] Who,G3748 when they cameG1525(Aor2ActPtc) toG1519 Caesarea,G2542 andG2532 deliveredG325(Aor2ActPtc) the epistleG1992 to the governor,G2232 presentedG3936(AorActInd) PaulG3972 alsoG2532 before him.G846 [34] AndG1161 when the governorG2232 had readG314(Aor2ActPtc) [the letter],G2532 he askedG1905(AorActPtc) ofG1537 whatG4169 provinceG1885 he was.G2076(PresInd) AndG2532 when he understoodG4441(Aor2MidDepPtc) thatG3754 [he was] ofG575 Cilicia;G2791 [35] I will hearG1251(FutMidDepInd) thee,G4675 said he,G5346(ImpfInd) whenG3752 thineG4675 accusersG2725 areG3854 alsoG2532 come.G3854(Aor2MidDepSubj) AndG5037 he commandedG2753(AorActInd) himG846 to be keptG5442(PresMidInf) inG1722 Herod’sG2264 judgment hall.G4232
