[1] Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha. [2] It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick. [3] The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.” [4] But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.” [5] Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. [6] When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was. [7] Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.” [8] The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?” [9] Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world. [10] But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.” [11] He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.” [12] The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” [13] Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep. [14] So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead. [15] I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.” [16] Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.” [17] So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already. [18] Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away. [19] Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. [20] Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house. [21] Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died. [22] Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” [23] Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” [24] Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” [25] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. [26] Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” [27] She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.” [28] When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.” [29] When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him. [30] Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him. [31] Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.” [32] Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.” [33] When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, [34] and said, “Where have you laid him?”They told him, “Lord, come and see.” [35] Jesus wept. [36] The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!” [37] Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?” [38] Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. [39] Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” [40] Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?” [41] So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me. [42] I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” [43] When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” [44] He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth.Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.” [45] Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. [46] But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. [47] The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs. [48] If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.” [49] But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, [50] nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.” [51] Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, [52] and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad. [53] So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. [54] Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples. [55] Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves. [56] Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?” [57] Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.

LazarusG2976 was sick.G770(ImpfActInd)) [3] ThereforeG3767 his sistersG79 sentG649(AorActInd) untoG4314 him,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) Lord,G2962 behold,G2396 he whomG3739 thou lovestG5368(PresActInd) is sick.G770(PresActInd) [4] WhenG1161 JesusG2424 heardG191(AorActPtc) [that], he said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) ThisG3778 sicknessG769 isG2076(PresInd) notG3756 untoG4314 death,G2288 butG235 forG5228 the gloryG1391 of God,G2316 thatG2443 the SonG5207 of GodG2316 might be glorifiedG1392(AorPasSubj) thereby.G1223 [5] NowG1161 JesusG2424 lovedG25(ImpfActInd) Martha,G3136 andG2532 herG846 sister,G79 andG2532 Lazarus.G2976 [6] WhenG5613 he had heardG191(AorActInd) thereforeG3767 thatG3754 he was sick,G770(PresActInd) he abodeG3306(AorActInd) twoG1417 daysG2250 stillG5119 inG1722 the same placeG5117 whereG3739 he was.G2258(ImpfInd) [7] ThenG1899 afterG3326 thatG5124 saith heG3004(PresActInd) to [his] disciples,G3101 Let us goG71(PresActSubj) intoG1519 JudaeaG2449 again.G3825 [8] [His] disciplesG3101 sayG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Master,G4461 the JewsG2453 of lateG3568 soughtG2212(ImpfActInd) to stoneG3034(AorActInf) thee;G4571 andG2532 goest thouG5217(PresActInd) thitherG1563 again?G3825 [9] JesusG2424 answered,G611(AorMidDepInd) Are thereG1526(PresInd) notG3780 twelveG1427 hoursG5610 in the day?G2250 IfG1437 any manG5100 walkG4043(PresActSubj) inG1722 the day,G2250 he stumblethG4350(PresActInd) not,G3756 becauseG3754 he seethG991(PresActInd) the lightG5457 of thisG5127 world.G2889 [10] ButG1161 ifG1437 a manG5100 walkG4043(PresActSubj) inG1722 the night,G3571 he stumbleth,G4350(PresActInd) becauseG3754 there isG2076(PresInd) noG3756 lightG5457 inG1722 him.G846 [11] These thingsG5023 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) he:G846 andG2532 afterG3326 thatG5124 he saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 OurG2257 friendG5384 LazarusG2976 sleepeth;G2837(PerfPasInd) butG235 I go,G4198(PresMidPasDepInd) thatG2443 I may awakeG1852 himG846 out of sleep.G1852(AorActSubj) [12] ThenG3767 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) hisG846 disciples,G3101 Lord,G2962 ifG1487 he sleep,G2837(PerfPasInd) he shall do well.G4982(FutPasInd) [13] HowbeitG1161 JesusG2424 spakeG2046(PlupfActInd) ofG4012 hisG846 death:G2288 butG1161 theyG1565 thoughtG1380(AorActInd) thatG3754 he had spokenG3004(PresActInd) ofG4012 taking of restG2838 in sleep.G5258 [14] ThenG5119 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) JesusG2424 unto themG846 plainly,G3954 LazarusG2976 is dead.G599(Aor2ActInd) [15] AndG2532 I am gladG5463(PresActInd) forG1223 your sakesG5209 thatG3754 I wasG2252(ImpfInd) notG3756 there,G1563 to the intentG2443 ye may believe;G4100(AorActSubj) neverthelessG235 let us goG71(PresActSubj) untoG4314 him.G846 [16] ThenG3767 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) Thomas,G2381 whichG3588 is calledG3004(PresPasPtc) Didymus,G1324 unto his fellowdisciples,G4827 Let usG71 alsoG2532 go,G71(PresActSubj) thatG2443 weG2249 may dieG599(Aor2ActSubj) withG3326 him.G846 [17] ThenG3767 when JesusG2424 came,G2064(Aor2ActPtc) he foundG2147(Aor2ActInd) that heG846 hadG2192(PresActPtc) [lain] inG1722 the graveG3419 fourG5064 daysG2250 already.G2235 [18] NowG1161 BethanyG963 wasG2258(ImpfInd) nighG1451 unto Jerusalem,G2414 aboutG5613 fifteenG1178 furlongsG4712 off:G575 [19] AndG2532 manyG4183 ofG1537 the JewsG2453 cameG2064(PlupfActInd) toG4314 MarthaG3136 andG2532 Mary,G3137 toG2443 comfortG3888(AorMidDepSubj) themG846 concerningG4012 theirG846 brother.G80 [20] ThenG3767 Martha,G3136 as soon asG5613 she heardG191(AorActInd) thatG3754 JesusG2424 was coming,G2064(PresMidPasDepInd) went and metG5221(AorActInd) him:G846 butG1161 MaryG3137 satG2516(ImpfMidPasDepInd) [still] inG1722 the house.G3624 [21] ThenG3767 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) MarthaG3136 untoG4314 Jesus,G2424 Lord,G2962 ifG1487 thou hadst beenG2258(ImpfInd) here,G5602 myG3450 brotherG80 hadG2348 notG3756 died.G2348(PlupfActInd) [22] ButG235 I know,G1492(PerfActInd) that evenG2532 now,G3568 whatsoeverG3754 thou wilt askG154(AorMidSubj) of God,G2316 GodG2316 will giveG1325(FutActInd) [it] thee.G4671 [23] JesusG2424 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto her,G846 ThyG4675 brotherG80 shall rise again.G450(FutMidInd) [24] MarthaG3136 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 I knowG1492(PerfActInd) thatG3754 he shall rise againG450(FutMidInd) inG1722 the resurrectionG386 atG1722 the lastG2078 day.G2250 [25] JesusG2424 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto her,G846 IG1473 amG1510(PresInd) the resurrection,G386 andG2532 the life:G2222 he that believethG4100(PresActPtc) inG1519 me,G1691 thoughG2579 he were dead,G599(Aor2ActSubj) yet shall he live:G2198(FutMidDepInd) [26] AndG2532 whosoeverG3956 livethG2198(PresActPtc) andG2532 believethG4100(PresActPtc) inG1519 meG1691 shallG599 neverG3364 die.G599(Aor2ActSubj) Believest thouG4100(PresActInd) this?G5124 [27] She saithG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Yea,G3483 Lord:G2962 IG1473 believeG4100(PerfActInd) thatG3754 thouG4771 artG1488(PresInd) the Christ,G5547 the SonG5207 of God,G2316 whichG3588 should comeG2064(PresMidPasDepPtc) intoG1519 the world.G2889 [28] AndG2532 when she hadG2036 soG5023 said,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) she went her way,G565(Aor2ActInd) andG2532 calledG5455(AorActInd) MaryG3137 herG846 sisterG79 secretly,G2977 saying,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) The MasterG1320 is come,G3918(PresInd) andG2532 calleth forG5455(PresActInd) thee.G4571 [29] As soon asG5613 sheG1565 heardG191(AorActInd) [that], she aroseG1453(PresPasInd) quickly,G5035 andG2532 cameG2064(PresMidPasDepInd) untoG4314 him.G846 [30] NowG1161 JesusG2424 wasG2064 not yetG3768 comeG2064(PlupfActInd) intoG1519 the town,G2968 butG235 wasG2258(ImpfInd) inG1722 that placeG5117 whereG3699 MarthaG3136 metG5221(AorActInd) him.G846 [31] The JewsG2453 thenG3767 whichG3588 wereG5607(PresPtc) withG3326 herG846 inG1722 the house,G3614 andG2532 comfortedG3888(PresMidPasDepPtc) her,G846 when they sawG1492(Aor2ActPtc) Mary,G3137 thatG3754 she rose upG450(Aor2ActInd) hastilyG5030 andG2532 went out,G1831(Aor2ActInd) followedG190(AorActInd) her,G846 saying,G3004(PresActPtc) She goethG5217(PresActInd) untoG1519 the graveG3419 toG2443 weepG2799(AorActSubj) there.G1563 [32] ThenG3767 whenG5613 MaryG3137 was comeG2064(Aor2ActInd) whereG3699 JesusG2424 was,G2258(ImpfInd) and sawG1492(Aor2ActPtc) him,G846 she fell downG4098(Aor2ActInd) atG1519 hisG846 feet,G4228 sayingG3004(PresActPtc) unto him,G846 Lord,G2962 ifG1487 thou hadst beenG2258(ImpfInd) here,G5602 myG3450 brotherG80 hadG302 notG3756 died.G599(Aor2ActInd) [33] WhenG5613 JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 sawG1492(Aor2ActInd) herG846 weeping,G2799(PresActPtc) andG2532 the JewsG2453 also weepingG2799(PresActPtc) which cameG4905(Aor2ActPtc) with her,G846 he groanedG1690(AorMidDepInd) in the spirit,G4151 andG2532 was troubled,G5015(AorActInd) [34] AndG2532 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) WhereG4226 have ye laidG5087(PerfActInd) him?G846 They saidG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Lord,G2962 comeG2064(PresMidPasDepInd) andG2532 see.G1492(AorActImpr) [35] JesusG2424 wept.G1145(AorActInd) [36] ThenG3767 saidG3004(ImpfActInd) the Jews,G2453 BeholdG2396 howG4459 he lovedG5368(ImpfActInd) him!G846 [37] AndG1161 someG5100 ofG1537 themG846 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) CouldG1410(ImpfMidPasDepInd) notG3756 this man,G3778 whichG3588 openedG455(AorActPtc) the eyesG3788 of the blind,G5185 have causedG4160(AorActInf) thatG2443 evenG2532 this manG3778 shouldG599 notG3361 have died?G599(Aor2ActSubj) [38] JesusG2424 thereforeG3767 againG3825 groaningG1690(PresMidPasDepPtc) inG1722 himselfG1438 comethG2064(PresMidPasDepInd) toG1519 the grave.G3419 It wasG2258(ImpfInd) a cave,G4693 andG2532 a stoneG3037 layG1945(ImpfMidPasDepInd) uponG1909 it.G846 [39] JesusG2424 said,G3004(PresActInd) Take ye awayG142(AorActImpr) the stone.G3037 Martha,G3136 the sisterG79 of him that was dead,G2348(PerfActPtc) saithG3004(PresActInd) unto him,G846 Lord,G2962 by this timeG2235 he stinketh:G3605(PresActInd) forG1063 he hath beenG2076(PresInd) [dead] four days.G5066 [40] JesusG2424 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto her,G846 Said IG2036(Aor2ActInd) notG3756 unto thee,G4671 that,G3754 ifG1437 thou wouldest believe,G4100(AorActSubj) thou shouldest seeG3700(FutMidDepInd) the gloryG1391 of God?G2316 [41] ThenG3767 they took awayG142(AorActInd) the stoneG3037 [from the place] whereG3757 the deadG2348(PerfActPtc) wasG2258(ImpfInd) laid.G2749(PresMidPasDepPtc) AndG1161 JesusG2424 liftedG142(AorActInd) upG507 [his] eyes,G3788 andG2532 said,G2036(Aor2ActInd) Father,G3962 I thankG2168(PresActInd) theeG4671 thatG3754 thou hast heardG191(AorActInd) me.G3450 [42] AndG1161 IG1473 knewG1492(PlupfActInd) thatG3754 thou hearestG191(PresActInd) meG3450 always:G3842 butG235 becauseG1223 of the peopleG3793 whichG3588 stand byG4026(PerfActPtc) I saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) [it], thatG2443 they may believeG4100(AorActSubj) thatG3754 thouG4771 hast sentG649(AorActInd) me.G3165 [43] AndG2532 when he thusG5023 had spoken,G2036(Aor2ActPtc) he criedG2905(AorActInd) with a loudG3173 voice,G5456 Lazarus,G2976 comeG1204(Impr) forth.G1854 [44] AndG2532 he that was deadG2348(PerfActPtc) came forth,G1831(Aor2ActInd) boundG1210(PerfPasPtc) handG5495 andG2532 footG4228 with graveclothes:G2750 andG2532 hisG846 faceG3799 was bound aboutG4019(PlupfPasInd) with a napkin.G4676 JesusG2424 saithG3004(PresActInd) unto them,G846 LooseG3089(AorActImpr) him,G846 andG2532 let himG863(Aor2ActImpr) go.G5217(PresActInf) [45] ThenG3767 manyG4183 ofG1537 the JewsG2453 whichG3588 cameG2064(Aor2ActPtc) toG4314 Mary,G3137 andG2532 had seenG2300(AorMidDepPtc) the things whichG3739 JesusG2424 did,G4160(AorActInd) believedG4100(AorActInd) onG1519 him.G846 [46] ButG1161 someG5100 ofG1537 themG846 went their waysG565(Aor2ActInd) toG4314 the Pharisees,G5330 andG2532 toldG2036(Aor2ActInd) themG846 what thingsG3739 JesusG2424 had done.G4160(AorActInd) [47] ThenG3767 gatheredG4863(Aor2ActInd) the chief priestsG749 andG2532 the PhariseesG5330 a council,G4892 andG2532 said,G3004(ImpfActInd) WhatG5101 do we?G4160(PresActInd) forG3754 thisG3778 manG444 doethG4160(PresActInd) manyG4183 miracles.G4592 [48] IfG1437 we letG863 himG846 thusG3779 alone,G863(Aor2ActSubj) allG3956 [men] will believeG4100(FutActInd) onG1519 him:G846 andG2532 the RomansG4514 shall comeG2064(FutMidDepInd) andG2532 take awayG142(FutActInd) bothG2532 ourG2257 placeG5117 andG2532 nation.G1484 [49] AndG1161 oneG1520 ofG1537 them,G846 [named] Caiaphas,G2533 beingG5607(PresPtc) the high priestG749 that sameG1565 year,G1763 saidG2036(Aor2ActInd) unto them,G846 YeG5210 knowG1492(PerfActInd) nothing at all,G3756 [50] NorG3761 considerG1260(PresMidPasDepInd) thatG3754 it is expedientG4851(PresActInd) for us,G2254 thatG2443 oneG1520 manG444 should dieG599(Aor2ActSubj) forG5228 the people,G2992 andG2532 that the wholeG3650 nationG1484 perishG622(Aor2MidSubj) not.G3361 [51] AndG1161 thisG5124 spake heG2036(Aor2ActInd) notG3756 ofG575 himself:G1438 butG235 beingG5607(PresPtc) high priestG749 thatG1565 year,G1763 he prophesiedG4395(AorActInd) thatG3754 JesusG2424
