Word Picture:
The Greek word “ἀπάντησις” was used in Greco-Roman civic life for an official delegation sent out to greet a visiting dignitary to negotiate peace or escort them back into the city.
While 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 is often associated with the “rapture” (from its Latin equivalent), the original usage of this word shows the saints as more of a welcoming party for Christ’s second coming. They do not remain suspended in the air, nor depart away to heaven. They escort Christ to His kingdom on earth, where He rules for the millennium with the saints.
