Yahweh looked at him, and said, “Go in this your might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian. Haven’t I sent you?”

He said to him, “O Lord,^§ how shall I save Israel? Behold, my family is the poorest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father’s house.”

The angel of God said to him, “Take the meat and the unleavened cakes, and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth.” He did so.

They said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” When they inquired and asked, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”

Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? He who will contend for him, let him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because someone has broken down his altar!”

Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal,° saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

Gideon said to God, “Don’t let your anger be kindled against me, and I will speak but this once. Please let me make a trial just this once with the fleece. Let it now be dry only on the fleece, and on all the ground let there be dew.”

Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Gideon, H1439 The people H5971 that are with thee are too many H7227 for me to give H5414 (QalInf) the Midianites H4080 into their hands, H3027 lest Israel H3478 vaunt H6286 (HithImpf) themselves against me, saying, H559 (QalInf) Mine own hand H3027 hath saved H3467 (HiphPerf) me.

και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων πολυς ο λαος ο μετα σου ωστε μη παραδουναι με την μαδιαμ εν χειρι αυτων μηποτε καυχησηται ισραηλ επ εμε λεγων η χειρ μου εσωσεν με

Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

και ειπεν κυριος προς αυτον λαλησον δη εις τα ωτα του λαου λεγων τις δειλος και φοβουμενος αποστραφητω και εξωρμησαν απο του ορους του γαλααδ και απεστραφησαν απο του λαου εικοσι και δυο χιλιαδες και δεκα χιλιαδες υπελειφθησαν

Yahweh said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that those whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ shall go with you; and whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ shall not go.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων ετι ο λαος πολυς καταγαγε αυτους εις το υδωρ και δοκιμω αυτους σοι εκει και εσται ον εαν ειπω προς σε ουτος πορευσεται μετα σου αυτος πορευσεται μετα σου και ον εαν ειπω σοι οτι ου πορευσεται μετα σου αυτος ου πορευσεται μετα σου

So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.”

και κατεβιβασεν τον λαον εις το υδωρ και ειπεν κυριος προς γεδεων πας ος αν λαψη τη γλωσση αυτου εκ του υδατος ως εαν λαψη ο κυων στησεις αυτον κατα μονας και πας ος αν καμψη επι τα γονατα αυτου του πιειν μεταστησεις αυτον καθ αυτον

Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Gideon, H1439 By the three H7969 hundred H3967 men H376 that lapped H3952 (PielPtc) will I save H3467 (HiphImpf) you, and deliver H5414 (QalPerf) the Midianites H4080 into thine hand: H3027 and let all the other people H5971 go H3212 (QalImpf) every man H376 unto his place. That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.

και εγενηθη εν τη νυκτι εκεινη και ειπεν προς αυτον κυριος αναστα καταβηθι το ταχος εντευθεν εις την παρεμβολην οτι παρεδωκα αυτην εν τη χειρι σου

When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.”

και εισηλθεν γεδεων και ιδου ανηρ εξηγειτο τω πλησιον αυτου το ενυπνιον και ειπεν ιδου το ενυπνιον ο ηνυπνιασθην και ιδου μαγις αρτου κριθινου κυλιομενη εν τη παρεμβολη μαδιαμ και ηλθεν εως της σκηνης μαδιαμ και επαταξεν αυτην και κατεστρεψεν αυτην και επεσεν η σκηνη

His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.”

And his fellow H7453 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) This is nothing else save the sword H2719 of Gideon H1439 the son H1121 of Joash, H3101 a man H376 of Israel: H3478 for into his hand H3027 hath God H430 delivered H5414 (QalPerf) Midian, H4080 and all the host. H4264

και απεκριθη ο πλησιον αυτου και ειπεν ουκ εστιν αυτη αλλ η ρομφαια γεδεων υιου ιωας ανδρος ισραηλ παρεδωκεν κυριος εν χειρι αυτου την μαδιαμ και πασαν την παρεμβολην

It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. Then he returned into the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!”

και εγενετο ως ηκουσεν γεδεων την διηγησιν του ενυπνιου και την συγκρισιν αυτου και προσεκυνησεν κυριον και επεστρεψεν εις την παρεμβολην ισραηλ και ειπεν αναστητε οτι παρεδωκεν κυριος εν χερσιν υμων την παρεμβολην μαδιαμν

He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do.

When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’ ”

και σαλπιω τη κερατινη εγω και παντες οι μετ εμου και σαλπιειτε ταις κερατιναις και υμεις κυκλω της παρεμβολης και ερειτε τω κυριω και τω γεδεων

Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian and take the waters before them as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan.

και αγγελους εξαπεστειλεν γεδεων εν παντι οριω εφραιμ λεγων καταβητε εις συναντησιν μαδιαμ και καταλαβετε εαυτοις το υδωρ εως βαιθβηρα και τον ιορδανην και εβοησεν πας ανηρ εφραιμ και προκατελαβοντο το υδωρ εως βαιθβηρα και τον ιορδανην

The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you treated us this way, that you didn’t call us when you went to fight with Midian?” They rebuked him sharply.

He said to them, “What have I now done in comparison with you? Isn’t the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

He said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me; for they are faint, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.”

και ειπεν τοις ανδρασιν σοκχωθ δοτε δη αρτους τω λαω τω μετ εμου οτι πεινωσιν εγω δε διωκω οπισω ζεβεε και σαλμανα βασιλεων μαδιαμ

The princes of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?”

And the princes H8269 of Succoth H5523 said, H559 (QalImpf) Are the hands H3709 of Zebah H2078 and Zalmunna H6759 now in thine hand, H3027 that we should give H5414 (QalImpf) bread H3899 unto thine army? H6635

και ειπαν οι αρχοντες σοκχωθ μη χειρ ζεβεε και σαλμανα νυν εν τη χειρι σου οτι δωσομεν τη στρατια σου αρτους

Gideon said, “Therefore when Yahweh has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.”
