The priest answered David, and said, “I have no common bread, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.”

David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”

David said to Ahimelech, “Isn’t there here under your hand spear or sword? For I haven’t brought my sword or my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.”

David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

David laid up these words in his heart, and was very afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the time that David was in the stronghold.

The prophet Gad said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth.

Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

The king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of Yahweh, because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled and didn’t disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh.

And the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the footmen^§ H7323 (QalPtc) that stood H5324 (NiphPtc) about him, Turn, H5437 (QalImpv) and slay H4191 (HiphImpv) the priests H3548 of the Lord; H3068 because their hand H3027 also is with David, H1732 and because they knew H3045 (QalPerf) when he fled, H1272 (QalActPtc) and did not shew H1540 (QalPerf) H241 it to me. But the servants H5650 of the king H4428 would H14 (QalPerf) not put forth H7971 (QalInf) their hand H3027 to fall H6293 (QalInf) upon the priests H3548 of the Lord. H3068

One of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.

και διασωζεται υιος εις τω αβιμελεχ υιω αχιτωβ και ονομα αυτω αβιαθαρ και εφυγεν οπισω δαυιδ

Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests.

And Abiathar H54 shewed H5046 (HiphImpf) David H1732 that Saul H7586 had slain H2026 (QalPerf) the Lord’s H3068 priests. H3548

και απηγγειλεν αβιαθαρ τω δαυιδ οτι εθανατωσεν σαουλ παντας τους ιερεις του κυριου

David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father’s house.

David was told, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and are robbing the threshing floors.”

Therefore David inquired of Yahweh, saying, “Shall I go and strike these Philistines?” Yahweh said to David, “Go strike the Philistines, and save Keilah.”

Therefore David H1732 enquired H7592 (QalImpf) of the Lord, H3068 saying, H559 (QalInf) Shall I go H3212 (QalImpf) and smite H5221 (HiphPerf) these Philistines? και επηρωτησεν δαυιδ δια του κυριου λεγων ει πορευθω και παταξω τους αλλοφυλους τουτους και ειπεν κυριος πορευου και παταξεις εν τοις αλλοφυλοις τουτοις και σωσεις την κειλα

David’s men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?”

And David’s H1732 men H582 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, we be afraid H3373 here in Judah: H3063 how much more then if we come H3212 (QalImpf) to Keilah H7084 against the armies H4634 of the Philistines? H6430

και ειπαν οι ανδρες του δαυιδ προς αυτον ιδου ημεις ενταυθα εν τη ιουδαια φοβουμεθα και πως εσται εαν πορευθωμεν εις κειλα εις τα σκυλα των αλλοφυλων εισπορευσομεθα

Then David inquired of Yahweh yet again. Yahweh answered him, and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.”

H3254 (HiphImpf) And the Lord H3068 answered H6030 (QalImpf) him and said, H559 (QalImpf) Arise, H6965 (QalImpv) go down H3381 (QalImpv) to Keilah; H7084 for I will deliver H5414 (QalActPtc) the Philistines H6430 into thine hand. και προσεθετο δαυιδ ερωτησαι ετι δια του κυριου και απεκριθη αυτω κυριος και ειπεν προς αυτον αναστηθι και καταβηθι εις κειλα οτι εγω παραδιδωμι τους αλλοφυλους εις χειρας σου

David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines, and brought away their livestock, and killed them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.

So David H1732 and his men H582 went H3212 (QalImpf) to Keilah, H7084 and fought H3898 (NiphImpf) with the Philistines, H6430 and brought away H5090 (QalImpf) their cattle, H4735 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them with a great H1419 slaughter. H4347 So David H1732 saved H3467 (HiphImpf) the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Keilah. H7084

και επορευθη δαυιδ και οι ανδρες οι μετ αυτου εις κειλα και επολεμησεν εν τοις αλλοφυλοις και εφυγον εκ προσωπου αυτου και απηγαγεν τα κτηνη αυτων και επαταξεν εν αυτοις πληγην μεγαλην και εσωσεν δαυιδ τους κατοικουντας κειλα

When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand.

And it came to pass, when Abiathar H54 the son H1121 of Ahimelech H288 fled H1272 (QalInf) to David H1732 to Keilah, H7084 that he came down H3381 (QalPerf) with an ephod H646 in his hand. H3027

και εγενετο εν τω φυγειν αβιαθαρ υιον αβιμελεχ προς δαυιδ και αυτος μετα δαυιδ εις κειλα κατεβη εχων εφουδ εν τη χειρι αυτου

Saul was told that David had come to Keilah. Saul said, “God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.”

And it was told H5046 (HophImpf) Saul H7586 that David H1732 was come H935 (QalPerf) to Keilah. H7084 And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) God H430 hath delivered H5234 (PielPerf) him into mine hand; H3027 for he is shut in, H5462 (NiphPerf) by entering H935 (QalInf) into a town H5892 that hath gates H1817 and bars. και απηγγελη τω σαουλ οτι ηκει δαυιδ εις κειλα και ειπεν σαουλ πεπρακεν αυτον ο θεος εις χειρας μου οτι αποκεκλεισται εισελθων εις πολιν θυρων και μοχλων

Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.

And Saul H7586 called H8085 all the people H5971 together H8085 (PielImpf) to war, H4421 to go down H3381 (QalInf) to Keilah, H7084 to besiege H6696 (QalInf) David H1732 and his men. H582

και παρηγγειλεν σαουλ παντι τω λαω εις πολεμον καταβαινειν εις κειλα συνεχειν τον δαυιδ και τους ανδρας αυτου

David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him. He said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.”

And David H1732 knew H3045 (QalImpf) that Saul H7586 secretly practised H2790 (HiphPtc) mischief H7451 against him; and he said H559 (QalImpf) to Abiathar H54 the priest, H3548 Bring hither H5066 (HiphImpv) the ephod. H646

και εγνω δαυιδ οτι ου παρασιωπα σαουλ περι αυτου την κακιαν και ειπεν δαυιδ προς αβιαθαρ τον ιερεα προσαγαγε το εφουδ κυριου

Then David said, “O Yahweh, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah to destroy the city for my sake.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) David, H1732 O Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 thy servant H5650 hath certainly H8085 (QalInf) heard H8085 (QalPerf) that Saul H7586 seeketh H1245 (PielPtc) to come H935 (QalInf) to Keilah, H7084 to destroy H7843 (PielInf) the city H5892 for my sake.

και ειπεν δαυιδ κυριε ο θεος ισραηλ ακουων ακηκοεν ο δουλος σου οτι ζητει σαουλ ελθειν επι κειλα διαφθειραι την πολιν δι εμε

Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul?” Yahweh said, “They will deliver you up.”

Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah and went wherever they could go. Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah; and he gave up going there.

David stayed in the wilderness in the strongholds, and remained in the hill country in the wilderness of Ziph. Saul sought him every day, but God didn’t deliver him into his hand.

And David H1732 abode H3427 (QalImpf) in the wilderness H4057 in strong holds, H4679 and remained H3427 (QalImpf) in a mountain H2022 in the wilderness H4057 of Ziph. They arose, and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the Arabah on the south of the desert.

Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told, he went down to the rock, and stayed in the wilderness of Maon. When Saul heard that, he pursued David in the wilderness of Maon.

Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David hurried to get away for fear of Saul, for Saul and his men surrounded David and his men to take them.

So Saul returned from pursuing David, and went against the Philistines. Therefore they called that place Sela Hammahlekoth.°
