The children of Israel said to Samuel, “Don’t stop crying to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

1 Samuel 7:8 Heb. Be not silent from us from crying

και ειπαν οι υιοι ισραηλ προς σαμουηλ μη παρασιωπησης αφ ημων του μη βοαν προς κυριον θεον σου και σωσει ημας εκ χειρος αλλοφυλων

Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer,° saying, “Yahweh helped us until now.”

1 Samuel 7:12 “Ebenezer” means “stone of help”.

1 Samuel 7:12 that is, The stone of help

και ελαβεν σαμουηλ λιθον ενα και εστησεν αυτον ανα μεσον μασσηφαθ και ανα μεσον της παλαιας και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου αβενεζερ λιθος του βοηθου και ειπεν εως ενταυθα εβοηθησεν ημιν κυριος

They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

και ειπαν αυτω ιδου συ γεγηρακας και οι υιοι σου ου πορευονται εν τη οδω σου και νυν καταστησον εφ ημας βασιλεα δικαζειν ημας καθα και τα λοιπα εθνη

But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

But the thing H1697 displeased H3415 (QalImpf) H5869 Samuel,^§ H8050 when they said, H559 (QalPerf) Give H5414 (QalImpv) us a king H4428 to judge H8199 (QalInf) us. And Samuel H8050 prayed H6419 (HithImpf) unto the Lord. H3068

1 Samuel 8:6 Heb. was evil in the eyes of Samuel

και ην πονηρον το ρημα εν οφθαλμοις σαμουηλ ως ειπαν δος ημιν βασιλεα δικαζειν ημας και προσηυξατο σαμουηλ προς κυριον

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Hearken H8085 (QalImpv) unto the voice H6963 of the people H5971 in all that they say H559 (QalImpf) unto thee: for they have not rejected H3988 (QalPerf) thee, but they have rejected H3988 (QalPerf) me, that I should not reign H4427 (QalInf) over them.

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ ακουε της φωνης του λαου καθα αν λαλησωσιν σοι οτι ου σε εξουθενηκασιν αλλ η εμε εξουδενωκασιν του μη βασιλευειν επ αυτων

Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

And Samuel H8050 told H559 (QalImpf) all the words H1697 of the Lord H3068 unto the people H5971 that asked H7592 (QalActPtc) of him a king. H4428

και ειπεν σαμουηλ παν το ρημα κυριου προς τον λαον τους αιτουντας παρ αυτου βασιλεα

He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”

The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Now take one of the servants with you, and arise, go look for the donkeys.”

When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come! Let’s return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and be anxious for us.”

The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

και ειπεν αυτω το παιδαριον ιδου δη ανθρωπος του θεου εν τη πολει ταυτη και ο ανθρωπος ενδοξος παν ο εαν λαληση παραγινομενον παρεσται και νυν πορευθωμεν οπως απαγγειλη ημιν την οδον ημων εφ ην επορευθημεν επ αυτην

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel° of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

1 Samuel 9:8 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so ¹⁄₄ shekel would be a small coin of about 2.5 grams.

και προσεθετο το παιδαριον αποκριθηναι τω σαουλ και ειπεν ιδου ευρηται εν τη χειρι μου τεταρτον σικλου αργυριου και δωσεις τω ανθρωπω του θεου και απαγγελει ημιν την οδον ημων

και εμπροσθεν εν ισραηλ ταδε ελεγεν εκαστος εν τω πορευεσθαι επερωταν τον θεον δευρο πορευθωμεν προς τον βλεποντα οτι τον προφητην εκαλει ο λαος εμπροσθεν ο βλεπων

Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come! Let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

αυτων αναβαινοντων την αναβασιν της πολεως και αυτοι ευρισκουσιν τα κορασια εξεληλυθοτα υδρευσασθαι υδωρ και λεγουσιν αυταις ει εστιν ενταυθα ο βλεπων

They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

1 Samuel 9:15 Heb. revealed the ear of Samuel

και κυριος απεκαλυψεν το ωτιον σαμουηλ ημερα μια εμπροσθεν του ελθειν προς αυτον σαουλ λεγων

When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”

Then Saul approached Samuel in the gateway, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”

Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you are to eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.

και απεκριθη σαμουηλ τω σαουλ και ειπεν εγω ειμι αυτος αναβηθι εμπροσθεν μου εις βαμα και φαγε μετ εμου σημερον και εξαποστελω σε πρωι και παντα τα εν τη καρδια σου απαγγελω σοι

Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?”

And Saul H7586 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Am not I a Benjamite, H1145 of the smallest H6996 of the tribes H7626 of Israel? και απεκριθη σαουλ και ειπεν ουχι ανδρος υιος ιεμιναιου εγω ειμι του μικρου σκηπτρου φυλης ισραηλ και της φυλης της ελαχιστης εξ ολου σκηπτρου βενιαμιν και ινα τι ελαλησας προς εμε κατα το ρημα τουτο

Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’ ”

The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’ ” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

They arose early; and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they both went outside, he and Samuel, together.

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”

αυτων καταβαινοντων εις μερος της πολεως και σαμουηλ ειπεν τω σαουλ ειπον τω νεανισκω και διελθετω εμπροσθεν ημων και συ στηθι ως σημερον και ακουσον ρημα θεου

Then Samuel took the vial of oil and poured it on his head, then kissed him and said, “Hasn’t Yahweh anointed you to be prince over his inheritance?

When you have departed from me today, then you will find two men by Rachel’s tomb, on the border of Benjamin at Zelzah. They will tell you, ‘The donkeys which you went to look for have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?” ’

1 Samuel 10:2 Heb. the business

ως αν απελθης σημερον απ εμου και ευρησεις δυο ανδρας προς τοις ταφοις ραχηλ εν τω οριω βενιαμιν αλλομενους μεγαλα και ερουσιν σοι ευρηνται αι ονοι ας επορευθητε ζητειν και ιδου ο πατηρ σου αποτετινακται το ρημα των ονων και εδαψιλευσατο δι υμας λεγων τι ποιησω υπερ του υιου μου

και απεκριθη τις αυτων και ειπεν και τις πατηρ αυτου δια τουτο εγενηθη εις παραβολην η και σαουλ εν προφηταις

Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

και ειπεν ο οικειος αυτου προς αυτον και προς το παιδαριον αυτου που επορευθητε και ειπαν ζητειν τας ονους και ειδαμεν οτι ουκ εισιν και εισηλθομεν προς σαμουηλ

Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.”

And Saul’s H7586 uncle H1730 said, H559 (QalImpf) Tell H5046 (HiphImpv) me, I pray thee, what Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalPerf) unto you.

και ειπεν ο οικειος προς σαουλ απαγγειλον δη μοι τι ειπεν σοι σαμουηλ

Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto his uncle, H1730 He told H5046 (HiphPerf) us plainly H5046 (HiphInf) that the asses H860 were found. H4672 (NiphPerf) But of the matter H1697 of the kingdom, H4410 whereof Samuel H8050 spake, H559 (QalPerf) he told H5046 (HiphPerf) him not.

και ειπεν σαουλ προς τον οικειον αυτου απηγγειλεν απαγγελλων μοι οτι ευρηνται αι ονοι το δε ρημα της βασιλειας ουκ απηγγειλεν αυτω

and he said to the children of Israel, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, says ‘I brought Israel up out of Egypt and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you.’

and said H559 (QalImpf) unto the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 I brought up H5927 (HiphPerf) Israel H3478 out of Egypt, H4714 and delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) you out of the hand H3027 of the Egyptians, H4714 and out of the hand H3027 of all kingdoms, H4467 and of them that oppressed H3905 (QalPtc) you:

και ειπεν προς υιους ισραηλ ταδε ειπεν κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ λεγων εγω ανηγαγον τους υιους ισραηλ εξ αιγυπτου και εξειλαμην υμας εκ χειρος φαραω βασιλεως αιγυπτου και εκ πασων των βασιλειων των θλιβουσων υμας

But you have today rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us!’ Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes and by your thousands.”

and ye have this day H3117 rejected H3988 (QalPerf) your God, H430 who himself saved H3467 (HiphPtc) you out of all your adversities H7451 and your tribulations; H6869 and ye have said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Nay, but set H7760 (QalImpf) a king H4428 over us. και υμεις σημερον εξουθενηκατε τον θεον ος αυτος εστιν υμων σωτηρ εκ παντων των κακων υμων και θλιψεων υμων και ειπατε ουχι αλλ η οτι βασιλεα στησεις εφ ημων και νυν καταστητε ενωπιον κυριου κατα τα σκηπτρα υμων και κατα τας φυλας υμων

Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”

και επηρωτησεν σαμουηλ ετι εν κυριω ει ερχεται ο ανηρ ενταυθα και ειπεν κυριος ιδου αυτος κεκρυπται εν τοις σκευεσιν

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) to all the people, H5971 See H7200 (QalPerf) ye him whom the Lord H3068 hath chosen, H977 (QalPerf) that there is none like him among all the people? But certain worthless fellows said, “How could this man save us?” They despised him, and brought him no tribute. But he held his peace.

Then Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh Gilead; and all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.”

και εγενηθη ως μετα μηνα και ανεβη ναας ο αμμανιτης και παρεμβαλλει επι ιαβις γαλααδ και ειπον παντες οι ανδρες ιαβις προς ναας τον αμμανιτην διαθου ημιν διαθηκην και δουλευσομεν σοι

Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “On this condition I will make it with you, that all your right eyes be gouged out. I will make this dishonor all Israel.”

και ειπεν προς αυτους ναας ο αμμανιτης εν ταυτη διαθησομαι υμιν διαθηκην εν τω εξορυξαι υμων παντα οφθαλμον δεξιον και θησομαι ονειδος επι ισραηλ

The elders of Jabesh said to him, “Give us seven days, that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel; and then, if there is no one to save us, we will come out to you.”

1 Samuel 11:3 Heb. forbear us

και λεγουσιν αυτω οι ανδρες ιαβις ανες ημιν επτα ημερας και αποστελουμεν αγγελους εις παν οριον ισραηλ εαν μη η ο σωζων ημας εξελευσομεθα προς υμας

Behold, Saul came following the oxen out of the field; and Saul said, “What ails the people that they weep?” They told him the words of the men of Jabesh.

και ιδου σαουλ ηρχετο μετα το πρωι εξ αγρου και ειπεν σαουλ τι οτι κλαιει ο λαος και διηγουνται αυτω τα ρηματα των υιων ιαβις

He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

And he took H3947 (QalImpf) a yoke H6776 of oxen, H1241 and hewed them in pieces, H5408 (PielImpf) and sent H7971 (PielImpf) them throughout all the coasts H1366 of Israel H3478 by the hands H3027 of messengers, H4397 saying, H559 (QalInf) Whosoever cometh not forth H3318 (QalActPtc) after H310 Saul H7586 and after H310 Samuel, H8050 so shall it be done H6213 (NiphImpf) unto his oxen. και ελαβεν δυο βοας και εμελισεν αυτας και απεστειλεν εις παν οριον ισραηλ εν χειρι αγγελων λεγων ος ουκ εστιν εκπορευομενος οπισω σαουλ και οπισω σαμουηλ κατα ταδε ποιησουσιν τοις βουσιν αυτου και επηλθεν εκστασις κυριου επι τον λαον ισραηλ και εβοησαν ως ανηρ εις

They said to the messengers who came, “Tell the men of Jabesh Gilead, ‘Tomorrow, by the time the sun is hot, you will be rescued.’ ” The messengers came and told the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

και ειπεν τοις αγγελοις τοις ερχομενοις ταδε ερειτε τοις ανδρασιν ιαβις αυριον υμιν η σωτηρια διαθερμαναντος του ηλιου και ηλθον οι αγγελοι εις την πολιν και απαγγελλουσιν τοις ανδρασιν ιαβις και ευφρανθησαν

Therefore the men of Jabesh said, “Tomorrow we will come out to you, and you shall do with us all that seems good to you.”

Therefore the men H582 of Jabesh H3003 said, H559 (QalImpf) To morrow H4279 we will come out H3318 (QalImpf) unto you, and ye shall do H6213 (QalPerf) with us all that seemeth H5869 good H2896 unto you.

και ειπαν οι ανδρες ιαβις προς ναας τον αμμανιτην αυριον εξελευσομεθα προς υμας και ποιησετε ημιν το αγαθον ενωπιον υμων

The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”

And the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Who is he that said, H559 (QalActPtc) Shall Saul H7586 reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us? bring H5414 (QalImpv) the men, H582 that we may put them to death. H4191 (HiphImpf)

και ειπεν ο λαος προς σαμουηλ τις ο ειπας οτι σαουλ ου βασιλευσει ημων παραδος τους ανδρας και θανατωσομεν αυτους

Saul said, “No man shall be put to death today; for today Yahweh has rescued Israel.”

And Saul H7586 said, H559 (QalImpf) There shall not a man H376 be put to death H4191 (HophImpf) this day: H3117 for to day H3117 the Lord H3068 hath wrought H6213 (QalPerf) salvation H8668 in Israel. H3478

και ειπεν σαουλ ουκ αποθανειται ουδεις εν τη ημερα ταυτη οτι σημερον κυριος εποιησεν σωτηριαν εν ισραηλ

Then Samuel said to the people, “Come! Let’s go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Samuel H8050 to the people, H5971 Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us go H3212 (QalImpf) to Gilgal, H1537 and renew H2318 (PielImpf) the kingdom H4410 there.

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον λεγων πορευθωμεν εις γαλγαλα και εγκαινισωμεν εκει την βασιλειαν
