David said to Joab and to all the people who were with him, “Tear your clothes, and clothe yourselves with sackcloth, and mourn in front of Abner.” King David followed the bier.

And David saith unto Joab, and unto all the people who are with him, ‘Rend your garments, and gird on sackcloth, and mourn before Abner;’ and king David is going after the bier.

All the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as whatever the king did pleased all the people.

And all the people H5971 took notice H5234 (HiphPerf) [of it], and it pleased H3190 (QalImpf) H5869 them: as whatsoever the king H4428 did H6213 (QalPerf) pleased H5869 H2896 all the people. H5971

And all the people have discerned it, and it is good in their eyes, as all that the king hath done is good in the eyes of all the people;

They brought the head of Ishbosheth to David to Hebron, and said to the king, “Behold, the head of Ishbosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life! Yahweh has avenged my lord the king today of Saul and of his offspring.^§”

and bring in the head of Ish-Bosheth unto David in Hebron, and say unto the king, ‘Lo, the head of Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, thine enemy, who sought thy life; and Jehovah doth give to my lord the king vengeance this day, of Saul and of his seed.’

David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, “As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

And David answereth Rechab and Baanah his brother, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and saith to them, ‘Jehovah liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

when someone told me, ‘Behold, Saul is dead,’ thinking that he brought good news, I seized him and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news.

When one told H5046 (HiphPtc) me, saying, H559 (QalInf) Behold, Saul H7586 is dead, H4191 (QalPerf) thinking to have brought H5869 good tidings, H1319 (PielPtc) I took hold H270 (QalImpf) of him, and slew H2026 (QalImpf) him in Ziklag, H6860 who [thought] that I would have given H5414 (QalInf) him a reward for his tidings: H1309

when one is declaring to me, saying, Lo, Saul is dead, and he was as a bearer of tidings in his own eyes, then I take hold on him, and slay him in Ziklag, instead of my giving to him for the tidings.

David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah, to bring up from there God’s ark, which is called by the Name, even the name of Yahweh of Armies who sits above the cherubim.

And David H1732 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) with all the people H5971 that [were] with him from Baale of Judah, H1184 to bring up H5927 (HiphInf) from thence the ark H727 of God, H430 whose name H8034 is called H7121 (NiphPerf) by the name H8034 of the Lord H3068 of hosts H6635 that dwelleth H3427 (QalActPtc) [between] the cherubims. H3742

and David riseth and goeth, and all the people who are with him, from Baale-Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God, whose name hath been called-the name of Jehovah of Hosts, inhabiting the cherubs-upon it.

They set God’s ark on a new cart, and brought it out of Abinadab’s house that was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart.

And they set H7392 (HiphImpf) the ark H727 of God H430 upon a new H2319 cart, H5699 and brought H5375 (QalImpf) it out of the house H1004 of Abinadab H41 that [was] in Gibeah: H1390 and Uzzah H5798 and Ahio, H283 the sons H1121 of Abinadab, H41 drave H5090 (QalActPtc) the new H2319 cart. H5699

And they cause the ark of God to ride on a new cart, and lift it up from the house of Abinadab, which is in the height, and Uzzah and Ahio sons of Abinadab are leading the new cart;

They brought it out of Abinadab’s house which was in the hill, with God’s ark; and Ahio went before the ark.

And they brought H5375 (QalImpf) it out of the house H1004 of Abinadab H41 which [was] at Gibeah, H1390 accompanying H5973 the ark H727 of God: H430 and Ahio H283 went H1980 (QalActPtc) before H6440 the ark. H727

and they lift it up from the house of Abinadab, which is in the height, with the ark of God, and Ahio is going before the ark,

David was displeased because Yahweh had broken out against Uzzah; and he called that place Perez Uzzah° to this day.

And David H1732 was displeased, H2734 (QalImpf) because the Lord H3068 had made H6555 (QalPerf) a breach H6556 upon Uzzah: H5798 and he called H7121 (QalImpf) the name of the place H4725 Perezuzzah H6560 to this day. H3117

And it is displeasing to David, because that Jehovah hath broken forth a breach upon Uzzah, and one calleth that place Perez-Uzzah, unto this day;

They brought in Yahweh’s ark, and set it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before Yahweh.

And they brought H935 (HiphImpf) in the ark H727 of the Lord, H3068 and set H3322 (HiphImpf) it in his place, H4725 in the midst H8432 of the tabernacle H168 that David H1732 had pitched H5186 (QalPerf) for it: and David H1732 offered H5927 (HiphImpf) burnt offerings H5930 and peace offerings H8002 before H6440 the Lord. And they bring in the ark of Jehovah, and set it up in its place, in the midst of the tent which David hath spread out for it, and David causeth to ascend burnt-offerings before Jehovah, and peace-offerings.

David said to Michal, “It was before Yahweh, who chose me above your father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Yahweh, over Israel. Therefore I will celebrate before Yahweh.

And David saith unto Michal, ‘-Before Jehovah, who fixed on me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me leader over the people of Jehovah, and over Israel,-yea, I played before Jehovah;

I will be yet more undignified than this, and will be worthless in my own sight. But the maids of whom you have spoken will honor me.”

And I will yet be more vile H7043 (NiphPerf) than thus, H2063 and will be base H8217 in mine own sight: H5869 and of the maidservants H519 which thou hast spoken H559 (QalPerf) of, of them shall I be had in honour. H3513 (NiphImpf)

and I have been more vile than this, and have been low in mine eyes, and with the handmaids whom thou hast spoken of, with them I am honoured.’

In all places in which I have walked with all the children of Israel, did I say a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel whom I commanded to be shepherd of my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built me a house of cedar?’ ” ’

During all the time that I have walked up and down among all the sons of Israel, a word have I spoken with one of the tribes of Israel which I commanded to feed my people Israel, saying, ‘Why have ye not built to Me a house of cedars?

I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you. I will make you a great name, like the name of the great ones who are in the earth.

And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, H1980 (QalPerf) and have cut off H3772 (HiphImpf) all thine enemies H341 (QalActPtc) out of thy sight, H6440 and have made H6213 (QalPerf) thee a great H1419 name, H8034 like unto the name H8034 of the great H1419 [men] that [are] in the earth. H776

and I am with thee whithersoever thou hast gone, and I cut off all thine enemies from thy presence, and have made for thee a great name, as the name of the great ones who are in the earth,

When your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your offspring after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

And when thy days H3117 be fulfilled, H4390 (QalImpf) and thou shalt sleep H7901 (QalPerf) with thy fathers, H1 I will set up H6965 (HiphPerf) thy seed H2233 after H310 thee, which shall proceed H3318 (QalImpf) out of thy bowels, H4578 and I will establish H3559 (HiphPerf) his kingdom. H4467

‘When thy days are full, and thou hast lain with thy fathers, then I have raised up thy seed after thee which goeth out from thy bowels, and have established his kingdom;

I will be his father, and he will be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men;

I am to him for a father, and he is to Me for a son; whom in his dealings perversely I have even reproved with a rod of men, and with strokes of the sons of Adam,

but my loving kindness will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

and My kindness doth not turn aside from him, as I turned it aside from Saul, whom I turned aside from before thee,

What one nation in the earth is like your people, even like Israel, whom God went to redeem to himself for a people, and to make himself a name, and to do great things for you, and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you redeemed to yourself out of Egypt, from the nations and their gods?

And what one H259 nation H1471 in the earth H776 [is] like thy people, H5971 [even] like Israel, H3478 whom God H430 went H1980 (QalPerf) to redeem H6299 (QalInf) for a people H5971 to himself, and to make H7760 (QalInf) him a name, H8034 and to do H6213 (QalInf) for you great things H1420 and terrible, H3372 (NiphPtc) for thy land, H776 before H6440 thy people, H5971 which thou redeemedst H6299 (QalPerf) to thee from Egypt, H4714 [from] the nations H1471 and their gods? H430

‘And who is as Thy people, as Israel-one nation in the earth, whom God hath gone to redeem to Him for a people, and to make for Him a name-and to do for you the greatness-even fearful things for Thy land, at the presence of Thy people, whom Thou hast redeemed to Thee out of Egypt-among the nations and their gods?

Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought tribute. Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went.

Then David H1732 put H7760 (QalImpf) garrisons H5333 in Syria H758 of Damascus: H1834 and the Syrians H758 became servants H5650 to David, H1732 [and] brought H5375 (QalActPtc) gifts. H4503 And the Lord H3068 preserved H3467 (HiphImpf) David H1732 whithersoever he went. H1980 (QalPerf)

and David putteth garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and Aram is to David for a servant, bearing a present; and Jehovah saveth David whithersoever he hath gone;

David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

And David H1732 took H3947 (QalImpf) the shields H7982 of gold H2091 that were on the servants H5650 of Hadadezer, H1909 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) them to Jerusalem. H3389

and David taketh the shields of gold which were on the servants of Hadadezer, and bringeth them to Jerusalem;

then Toi sent Joram his son to King David to greet him and to bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and struck him; for Hadadezer had wars with Toi. Joram brought with him vessels of silver, vessels of gold, and vessels of bronze.

and Toi sendeth Joram his son unto king David to ask of him of welfare, and to bless him, (because that he hath fought against Hadadezer, and smiteth him, for a man of wars with Toi had Hadadezer been), and in his hand have been vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and vessels of brass,

King David also dedicated these to Yahweh, with the silver and gold that he dedicated of all the nations which he subdued—

Which also king H4428 David H1732 did dedicate H6942 (HiphPerf) unto the Lord, H3068 with the silver H3701 and gold H2091 that he had dedicated H6942 (HiphPerf) of all nations H1471 which he subdued; H3533 (PielPerf)

also them did king David sanctify to Jehovah, with the silver and the gold which he sanctified of all the nations which he subdued:

He put garrisons in Edom. Throughout all Edom, he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became servants to David. Yahweh gave victory to David wherever he went.

And he put H7760 (QalImpf) garrisons H5333 in Edom; H123 throughout all Edom H123 put H7760 (QalPerf) he garrisons, H5333 and all they of Edom H123 became David’s H1732 servants. H5650 And the Lord H3068 preserved H3467 (HiphImpf) David H1732 whithersoever he went. H1980 (QalPerf)

and he putteth in Edom garrisons-in all Edom he hath put garrisons, and all Edom are servants to David; and Jehovah saveth David whithersoever he hath gone.

David said, “Is there yet any who is left of Saul’s house, that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”

And David H1732 said, H559 (QalImpf) Is there yet H3426 any that is left H3498 (NiphPerf) of the house H1004 of Saul, H7586 that I may shew H6213 (QalImpf) him kindness H2617 for Jonathan’s H3083 sake?

And David saith, ‘Is there yet any left to the house of Saul, and I do with him kindness because of Jonathan?’

So Joab and the people who were with him came near to the battle against the Syrians, and they fled before him.

And Joab H3097 drew nigh, H5066 (QalImpf) and the people H5971 that [were] with him, unto the battle H4421 against the Syrians: H758 and they fled H5127 (QalImpf) before H6440 him.

And Joab draweth nigh, and the people who are with him, to battle against Aram, and they flee from his presence;

Hadadezer sent and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the River; and they came to Helam, with Shobach the captain of the army of Hadadezer at their head.

And Hadarezer H1928 sent, H7971 (QalImpf) and brought out H3318 (HiphImpf) the Syrians H758 that [were] beyond H5676 the river: H5104 and they came H935 (QalImpf) to Helam; H2431 and Shobach H7731 the captain H8269 of the host H6635 of Hadarezer H1928 [went] before H6440 them.

and Hadadezer sendeth, and bringeth out Aram which is beyond the River, and they come in to Helam, and Shobach head of the host of Hadadezer is before them.

When Joab kept watch on the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew that valiant men were.

And it came to pass, when Joab H3097 observed H8104 (QalInf) the city, H5892 that he assigned H5414 (QalImpf) Uriah H223 unto a place H4725 where he knew H3045 (QalPerf) that valiant H2428 men H582 [were].

And it cometh to pass in Joab’s watching of the city, that he appointeth Uriah unto the place where he knew that valiant men are;

but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was like a daughter to him.

And the poor one hath nothing, Except one little ewe-lamb, Which he hath bought, and keepeth alive, And it groweth up with him, And with his sons together; Of his morsel it eateth, And from his cup it drinketh, And in his bosom it lieth, And it is to him as a daughter;

He must restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing and because he had no pity!”

He brought out the people who were in it, and put them to work under saws, under iron picks, under axes of iron, and made them go to the brick kiln; and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

and the people who are in it he hath brought out, and setteth to the saw, and to cutting instruments of iron, and to axes of iron, and hath caused them to pass over into the brick-kiln; and so he doth to all the cities of the Bene-Ammon; and David turneth back, and all the people, to Jerusalem.

Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the room, that I may eat from your hand.” Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother.

And Amnon H550 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Tamar, H8559 Bring H935 (HiphImpv) the meat H1279 into the chamber, H2315 that I may eat H1262 (QalImpf) of thine hand. And Amnon saith unto Tamar, ‘Bring the food into the inner chamber, and I eat from thy hand;’ and Tamar taketh the cakes that she hath made, and bringeth in to Amnon her brother, into the inner chamber,

Then Amnon hated her with exceedingly great hatred; for the hatred with which he hated her was greater than the love with which he had loved her. Amnon said to her, “Arise, be gone!”

And Amnon hateth her-a very great hatred-that greater is the hatred with which he hath hated her than the love with which he loved her, and Amnon saith to her, ‘Rise, go.’

Tamar put ashes on her head, and tore her garment of various colors that was on her; and she laid her hand on her head and went her way, crying aloud as she went.

Absalom spoke to Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.

After two full years, Absalom had sheep shearers in Baal Hazor, which is beside Ephraim; and Absalom invited all the king’s sons.

And it cometh to pass, after two years of days, that Absalom hath shearers in Baal-Hazor, which is with Ephraim, and Absalom calleth for all the sons of the king.

Behold, the whole family has risen against your servant, and they say, ‘Deliver him who struck his brother, that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he killed, and so destroy the heir also.’ Thus they would quench my coal which is left, and would leave to my husband neither name nor remainder on the surface of the earth.”

and lo, the whole family hath risen against thy maid-servant, and say, Give up him who smiteth his brother, and we put him to death for the life of his brother whom he hath slain, and we destroy also the heir; and they have quenched my coal which is left-so as not to set to my husband a name and remnant on the face of the ground.’

For we must die, and are like water spilled on the ground, which can’t be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

for we do surely die, and are as water which is running down to the earth, which is not gathered, and God doth not accept a person, and hath devised devices in that the outcast is not outcast by Him.

Now therefore, seeing that I have come to speak this word to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid. Your servant said, ‘I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.’

‘And now that I have come to speak unto the king my lord this word, it is because the people made me afraid, and thy maid-servant saith, Let me speak, I pray thee, unto the king; it may be the king doth do the word of his handmaid,

Absalom said moreover, “Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!”

And Absalom saith, ‘Who doth make me a judge in the land, that unto me doth come every man who hath a plea and judgment?-then I have declared him righteous.’

Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

And on this manner H1697 did H6213 (QalImpf) Absalom H53 to all Israel H3478 that came H935 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 for judgment: H4941 so Absalom H53 stole H1589 (PielImpf) the hearts H3820 of the men H582 of Israel. H3478

and Absalom doth according to this thing to all Israel who come in for judgment unto the king, and Absalom stealeth the heart of the men of Israel.

At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron.

And it cometh to pass, at the end of forty years, that Absalom saith unto the king, ‘Let me go, I pray thee, and I complete my vow, that I vowed to Jehovah in Hebron,

David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise! Let’s flee, or else none of us will escape from Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest he overtake us quickly and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

And David saith to all his servants who are with him in Jerusalem, ‘Rise, and we flee, for we have no escape from the face of Absalom; haste to go, lest he hasten, and have overtaken us, and forced on us evil, and smitten the city by the mouth of the sword.’

The king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”

And the servants of the king say unto the king, ‘According to all that my lord the king chooseth-lo, thy servants do.’

All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

And all his servants H5650 passed on H5674 (QalActPtc) beside H3027 him; and all the Cherethites, H3774 and all the Pelethites, H6432 and all the Gittites, H1663 six H8337 hundred H3967 men H376 which came H935 (QalPerf) after H7272 him from Gath, H1661 passed on H5674 (QalActPtc) before H6440 the king. And all his servants are passing on at his side, and all the Cherethite, and all the Pelethite, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came at his feet from Gath, are passing on at the front of the king.

Whereas you came but yesterday, should I today make you go up and down with us, since I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you.”

Yesterday is thy coming in, and to-day I move thee to go with us, and I am going on that which I am going!-turn back, and take back thy brethren with thee,-kindness and truth.’

Ittai answered the king and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king is, whether for death or for life, your servant will be there also.”

And Ittai H863 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the king, H4428 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [As] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 and [as] my lord H113 the king H4428 liveth, H2416 surely in what place H4725 my lord H113 the king H4428 shall be, whether in death H4194 or life, H2416 even there also will thy servant H5650 be.

And Ittai answereth the king and saith, ‘Jehovah liveth, and my lord the king liveth, surely in the place where my lord the king is-if for death, if for life, surely there is thy servant.’

David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him.

David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered and went barefoot. All the people who were with him each covered his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

And David is going up in the ascent of the olives, going up and weeping, and he hath the head covered, and he is going barefooted, and all the people who are with him have covered each his head, and have gone up, going up and weeping;

When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his tunic torn and earth on his head.

And it came to pass, that [when] David H1732 was come H935 (QalPerf) to the top H7218 [of the mount], where he worshipped H7812 (HithImpf) God, H430 behold, Hushai H2365 the Archite H757 came to meet H7125 (QalInf) him with his coat H3801 rent, H7167 (QalPasPtc) and earth H127 upon his head: H7218

And it cometh to pass, David hath come unto the top, where he boweth himself to God, and lo, to meet him is Hushai the Archite, his coat rent, and earth on his head;

Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore whatever you hear out of the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

And [hast thou] not there with thee Zadok H6659 and Abiathar H54 the priests? H3548 therefore it shall be, [that] what thing H1697 soever thou shalt hear H8085 (QalImpf) out of the king’s H4428 house, H1004 thou shalt tell H5046 (HiphImpf) [it] to Zadok H6659 and Abiathar H54 the priests. H3548

and are there not with thee there Zadok and Abiathar the priests? and it hath been, the whole of the matter that thou hearest from the house of the king thou dost declare to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests.
