και εσται η πολις αναθεμα αυτη και παντα οσα εστιν εν αυτη κυριω σαβαωθ πλην ρααβ την πορνην περιποιησασθε αυτην και οσα εστιν εν τω οικω αυτης

So the people shouted and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight in front of him, and they took the city.

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

He commanded them, saying, “Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don’t go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

I and all the people who are with me will approach the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

They will come out after us until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, like the first time.’ So we will flee before them,

Joshua 8:6 Heb. pulled

και ως αν εξελθωσιν οπισω ημων αποσπασομεν αυτους απο της πολεως και ερουσιν φευγουσιν ουτοι απο προσωπου ημων ον τροπον και εμπροσθεν

and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

κατα το ρημα τουτο ποιησετε ιδου εντεταλμαι υμιν

All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up and came near, and came before the city and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

και τα ενεδρα της πολεως απο θαλασσης

So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the middle of the valley.

Joshua 8:13 Heb. their lying in wait

When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

And it came to pass, when the king H4428 of Ai H5857 saw H7200 (QalInf) it, that they hasted H4116 (PielImpf) and rose up early, H7925 (HiphImpf) and the men H582 of the city H5892 went out H3318 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) Israel H3478 to battle, H4421 he and all his people, H5971 at a time appointed, H4150 before H6440 the plain; H6160 but he wist H3045 (QalPerf) not that there were liers in ambush H693 (QalActPtc) against him behind H310 the city. All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

και κατεδιωξαν οπισω των υιων ισραηλ και αυτοι απεστησαν απο της πολεως

There was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who didn’t go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

And there was not a man H376 left H7604 (NiphPerf) in Ai H5857 or Beth-el, H1008 that went not out H3318 (QalPerf) after H310 Israel: H3478 and they left H5800 (QalImpf) the city H5892 open, H6605 (QalPasPtc) and pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after Israel. H3478

ου κατελειφθη ουθεις εν τη γαι ος ου κατεδιωξεν οπισω ισραηλ και κατελιπον την πολιν ανεωγμενην και κατεδιωξαν οπισω ισραηλ

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand.” Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand and entered into the city and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

And when the men H582 of Ai H5857 looked H6437 (QalImpf) behind H310 them, they saw, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended up H5927 (QalPerf) to heaven, H8064 and they had no power^§ H3027 to flee H5127 (QalInf) this way or that way: H2008 and the people H5971 that fled H5127 (QalPtc) to the wilderness H4057 turned back H2015 (NiphPerf) upon the pursuers. Joshua 8:20 Heb. hand

και περιβλεψαντες οι κατοικοι γαι εις τα οπισω αυτων και εθεωρουν καπνον αναβαινοντα εκ της πολεως εις τον ουρανον και ουκετι ειχον που φυγωσιν ωδε η ωδε

When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.

And when Joshua H3091 and all Israel H3478 saw H7200 (QalPerf) that the ambush H693 (QalActPtc) had taken H3920 (QalPerf) the city, H5892 and that the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended, H5927 (QalPerf) then they turned again, H7725 (QalImpf) and slew H5221 (HiphImpf) the men H582 of Ai. H5857

The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the middle of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

And the other H428 issued out H3318 (QalPerf) of the city H5892 against H7125 (QalInf) them; so they were in the midst H8432 of Israel, H3478 some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them, so that H5704 they let H7604 (HiphPerf) none of them remain H8300 or escape. Israel took for themselves only the livestock and the goods of that city, according to Yahweh’s word which he commanded Joshua.

He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening. At sundown, Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.

The children of Israel traveled and came to their cities on the third day. Now their cities were Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath Jearim.

When Joshua and the children of Israel had finished killing them with a very great slaughter until they were consumed, and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

Joshua captured all the cities of those kings, with their kings, and he struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed them, as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded.
