When he saw them, Jacob said, “This is God’s army.” He called the name of that place Mahanaim.°

Genesis 32:2 “Mahanaim” means “two camps”.

He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.

The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

And the messengers H4397 returned H7725 (QalImpf) to Jacob, H3290 saying, H559 (QalInf) We came H935 (QalPerf) to thy brother H251 Esau, H6215 and also he cometh H1980 (QalActPtc) to meet thee, H7125 (QalInf) and four hundred H3967 men H376 with him.

He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”

^[32:9] και ειπεν ιακωβ εαν ελθη ησαυ εις παρεμβολην μιαν και εκκοψη αυτην εσται η παρεμβολη η δευτερα εις το σωζεσθαι

Jacob said, “God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, Yahweh, who said to me, ‘Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,’

You said, ‘I will surely do you good, and make your offspring as the sand of the sea, which can’t be counted because there are so many.’ ”

He delivered them into the hands of his servants, every herd by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put a space between herd and herd.”

He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’

Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’ ”

^[32:19] ερεις του παιδος σου ιακωβ δωρα απεσταλκεν τω κυριω μου ησαυ και ιδου αυτος οπισω ημων

He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

You shall say, ‘Not only that, but behold, your servant, Jacob, is behind us.’ ” For, he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face. Perhaps he will accept me.”

^[32:21] και ερειτε ιδου ο παις σου ιακωβ παραγινεται οπισω ημων ειπεν γαρ εξιλασομαι το προσωπον αυτου εν τοις δωροις τοις προπορευομενοις αυτου και μετα τουτο οψομαι το προσωπον αυτου ισως γαρ προσδεξεται το προσωπον μου

The man said, “Let me go, for the day breaks.” Jacob said, “I won’t let you go unless you bless me.”

He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob”.

He said, “Your name will no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” He said, “Why is it that you ask what my name is?” So he blessed him there.

He lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, “Who are these with you?” He said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.”

Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?” Jacob said, “To find favor in the sight of my lord.”

Genesis 33:8 Heb. What is all this band to thee?

και ειπεν τι ταυτα σοι εστιν πασαι αι παρεμβολαι αυται αις απηντηκα ο δε ειπεν ινα ευρη ο παις σου χαριν εναντιον σου κυριε

Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; let that which you have be yours.”

Genesis 33:9 Heb. be that to thee that is thine

ειπεν δε ησαυ εστιν μοι πολλα αδελφε εστω σοι τα σα

Jacob said, “Please, no, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present at my hand, because I have seen your face, as one sees the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

Esau said, “Let’s take our journey, and let’s go, and I will go before you.”

και ειπεν απαραντες πορευσομεθα επ ευθειαν

Jacob said to him, “My lord knows that the children are tender, and that the flocks and herds with me have their young, and if they overdrive them one day, all the flocks will die.

Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me.” He said, “Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

ειπεν δε ησαυ καταλειψω μετα σου απο του λαου του μετ εμου ο δε ειπεν ινα τι τουτο ικανον οτι ευρον χαριν εναντιον σου κυριε

Shechem spoke to his father, Hamor, saying, “Get me this young lady as a wife.”

Hamor talked with them, saying, “The soul of my son, Shechem, longs for your daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.

Shechem said to her father and to her brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes, and whatever you will tell me I will give.

Ask me a great amount for a dowry, and I will give whatever you ask of me, but give me the young lady as a wife.”

πληθυνατε την φερνην σφοδρα και δωσω καθοτι αν ειπητε μοι και δωσετε μοι την παιδα ταυτην εις γυναικα

and said to them, “We can’t do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised; for that is a reproach to us.

Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have troubled me, to make me odious to the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I am few in number. They will gather themselves together against me and strike me, and I will be destroyed, I and my house.”

ειπεν δε ιακωβ συμεων και λευι μισητον με πεποιηκατε ωστε πονηρον με ειναι πασιν τοις κατοικουσιν την γην εν τε τοις χαναναιοις και τοις φερεζαιοις εγω δε ολιγοστος ειμι εν αριθμω και συναχθεντες επ εμε συγκοψουσιν με και εκτριβησομαι εγω και ο οικος μου

They said, “Should he deal with our sister as with a prostitute?”

οι δε ειπαν αλλ ωσει πορνη χρησωνται τη αδελφη ημων

God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel, and live there. Make there an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.”

ειπεν δε ο θεος προς ιακωβ αναστας αναβηθι εις τον τοπον βαιθηλ και οικει εκει και ποιησον εκει θυσιαστηριον τω θεω τω οφθεντι σοι εν τω αποδιδρασκειν σε απο προσωπου ησαυ του αδελφου σου

Then Jacob said to his household, and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods that are among you, purify yourselves, and change your garments.

God said to him, “Your name is Jacob. Your name shall not be Jacob any more, but your name will be Israel.” He named him Israel.

και ειπεν αυτω ο θεος το ονομα σου ιακωβ ου κληθησεται ετι ιακωβ αλλ ισραηλ εσται το ονομα σου

God said to him, “I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations will be from you, and kings will come out of your body.

ειπεν δε αυτω ο θεος εγω ο θεος σου αυξανου και πληθυνου εθνη και συναγωγαι εθνων εσονται εκ σου και βασιλεις εκ της οσφυος σου εξελευσονται

When she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for now you will have another son.”

εγενετο δε εν τω σκληρως αυτην τικτειν ειπεν αυτη η μαια θαρσει και γαρ ουτος σοι εστιν υιος

He said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed:

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto them, Hear, H8085 (QalImpv) I pray you, this dream H2472 which I have dreamed: H2492 (QalPerf)

και ειπεν αυτοις ακουσατε του ενυπνιου τουτου ου ενυπνιασθην

His brothers asked him, “Will you indeed reign over us? Will you indeed have dominion over us?” They hated him all the more for his dreams and for his words.

And his brethren H251 said H559 (QalImpf) to him, Shalt thou indeed H4427 (QalInf) reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us? or shalt thou indeed H4910 (QalInf) have dominion H4910 (QalImpf) over us? He dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, “Behold, I have dreamed yet another dream: and behold, the sun and the moon and eleven stars bowed down to me.”

He told it to his father and to his brothers. His father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Will I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow ourselves down to the earth before you?”

και επετιμησεν αυτω ο πατηρ αυτου και ειπεν αυτω τι το ενυπνιον τουτο ο ενυπνιασθης αρα γε ελθοντες ελευσομεθα εγω τε και η μητηρ σου και οι αδελφοι σου προσκυνησαι σοι επι την γην

Israel said to Joseph, “Aren’t your brothers feeding the flock in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” He said to him, “Here I am.”

And Israel H3478 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joseph, H3130 Do not thy brethren H251 feed H7462 (QalActPtc) the flock in Shechem? H7927 come, H3212 (QalImpv) and I will send thee H7971 (QalImpf) unto them. And he said H559 (QalImpf) to him, Here am I.

ειπεν δε αυτω ισραηλ πορευθεις ιδε ει υγιαινουσιν οι αδελφοι σου και τα προβατα και αναγγειλον μοι και απεστειλεν αυτον εκ της κοιλαδος της χεβρων και ηλθεν εις συχεμ

A certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. The man asked him, “What are you looking for?”

The man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let’s go to Dothan.’ ” Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

ειπαν δε εκαστος προς τον αδελφον αυτου ιδου ο ενυπνιαστης εκεινος ερχεται

Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

νυν ουν δευτε αποκτεινωμεν αυτον και ριψωμεν αυτον εις ενα των λακκων και ερουμεν θηριον πονηρον κατεφαγεν αυτον και οψομεθα τι εσται τα ενυπνια αυτου

Reuben heard it, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let’s not take his life.”

Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit that is in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might deliver him out of their hand, to restore him to his father.

Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood?
