και ειπεν μη επιβαλης την χειρα σου επι το παιδαριον μηδε ποιησης αυτω μηδεν νυν γαρ εγνων οτι φοβη τον θεον συ και ουκ εφεισω του υιου σου του αγαπητου δι εμε

Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”.^§ As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”

εγενετο δε μετα τα ρηματα ταυτα και ανηγγελη τω αβρααμ λεγοντες ιδου τετοκεν μελχα και αυτη υιους ναχωρ τω αδελφω σου

Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,

The servant said to him, “What if the woman isn’t willing to follow me to this land? Must I bring your son again to the land you came from?”

Abraham said to him, “Beware that you don’t bring my son there again.

Yahweh, the God of heaven—who took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my birth, who spoke to me, and who swore to me, saying, ‘I will give this land to your offspring—he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

He said, “Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, please give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.

και ειπεν κυριε ο θεος του κυριου μου αβρααμ ευοδωσον εναντιον εμου σημερον και ποιησον ελεος μετα του κυριου μου αβρααμ

Let it happen, that the young lady to whom I will say, ‘Please let down your pitcher, that I may drink,’ then she says, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels a drink,’—let her be the one you have appointed for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”

και εσται η παρθενος η αν εγω ειπω επικλινον την υδριαν σου ινα πιω και ειπη μοι πιε και τας καμηλους σου ποτιω εως αν παυσωνται πινουσαι ταυτην ητοιμασας τω παιδι σου ισαακ και εν τουτω γνωσομαι οτι εποιησας ελεος τω κυριω μου αβρααμ

The servant ran to meet her, and said, “Please give me a drink, a little water from your pitcher.”

επεδραμεν δε ο παις εις συναντησιν αυτης και ειπεν ποτισον με μικρον υδωρ εκ της υδριας σου

She said, “Drink, my lord.” She hurried, and let down her pitcher on her hand, and gave him a drink.

When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, “I will also draw for your camels, until they have finished drinking.”

εως επαυσατο πινων και ειπεν και ταις καμηλοις σου υδρευσομαι εως αν πασαι πιωσιν

and said, “Whose daughter are you? Please tell me. Is there room in your father’s house for us to stay?”

και επηρωτησεν αυτην και ειπεν θυγατηρ τινος ει αναγγειλον μοι ει εστιν παρα τω πατρι σου τοπος ημιν καταλυσαι

She said to him, “I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor.”

She said moreover to him, “We have both straw and feed enough, and room to lodge in.”

He said, “Blessed be Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his loving kindness and his truth toward my master. As for me, Yahweh has led me on the way to the house of my master’s relatives.”

When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister’s hands, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, “This is what the man said to me,” he came to the man. Behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring.

και εγενετο ηνικα ειδεν τα ενωτια και τα ψελια επι τας χειρας της αδελφης αυτου και οτε ηκουσεν τα ρηματα ρεβεκκας της αδελφης αυτου λεγουσης ουτως λελαληκεν μοι ο ανθρωπος και ηλθεν προς τον ανθρωπον εστηκοτος αυτου επι των καμηλων επι της πηγης

He said, “Come in, you blessed of Yahweh. Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.”

Food was set before him to eat, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told my message.” Laban said, “Speak on.”

He said, “I am Abraham’s servant.

και ειπεν παις αβρααμ εγω ειμι

My master made me swear, saying, ‘You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I live,

And my master H113 made me swear, H7650 (HiphImpf) saying, H559 (QalInf) Thou shalt not take H3947 (QalImpf) a wife H802 to my son H1121 of the daughters H1323 of the Canaanites, H3669 in whose land H776 I dwell: H3427 (QalActPtc)

και ωρκισεν με ο κυριος μου λεγων ου λημψη γυναικα τω υιω μου απο των θυγατερων των χαναναιων εν οις εγω παροικω εν τη γη αυτων

I asked my master, ‘What if the woman will not follow me?’

ειπα δε τω κυριω μου μηποτε ου πορευσεται η γυνη μετ εμου

He said to me, ‘Yahweh, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you, and prosper your way. You shall take a wife for my son from my relatives, and of my father’s house.

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, The Lord, H3068 before H6440 whom I walk, H1980 (HithPerf) will send H7971 (QalImpf) his angel H4397 with thee, and prosper H6743 (HiphPerf) thy way; H1870 and thou shalt take H3947 (QalPerf) a wife H802 for my son H1121 of my kindred, H4940 and of my father’s H1 house: H1004

και ειπεν μοι κυριος ω ευηρεστησα εναντιον αυτου αυτος αποστελει τον αγγελον αυτου μετα σου και ευοδωσει την οδον σου και λημψη γυναικα τω υιω μου εκ της φυλης μου και εκ του οικου του πατρος μου

I came today to the spring, and said, ‘Yahweh, the God of my master Abraham, if now you do prosper my way which I go—

και ελθων σημερον επι την πηγην ειπα κυριε ο θεος του κυριου μου αβρααμ ει συ ευοδοις την οδον μου ην νυν εγω πορευομαι επ αυτην

behold, I am standing by this spring of water. Let it happen, that the maiden who comes out to draw, to whom I will say, “Please give me a little water from your pitcher to drink,”

ιδου εγω εφεστηκα επι της πηγης του υδατος και αι θυγατερες των ανθρωπων της πολεως εξελευσονται υδρευσασθαι υδωρ και εσται η παρθενος η αν εγω ειπω ποτισον με μικρον υδωρ εκ της υδριας σου

then she tells me, “Drink, and I will also draw for your camels,”—let her be the woman whom Yahweh has appointed for my master’s son.’

Before I had finished speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her pitcher on her shoulder. She went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, ‘Please let me drink.’

I asked her, and said, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She said, ‘The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bore to him.’ I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her hands.

Then Laban and Bethuel answered, “The thing proceeds from Yahweh. We can’t speak to you bad or good.

αποκριθεις δε λαβαν και βαθουηλ ειπαν παρα κυριου εξηλθεν το προσταγμα τουτο ου δυνησομεθα ουν σοι αντειπειν κακον καλω

They ate and drank, he and the men who were with him, and stayed all night. They rose up in the morning, and he said, “Send me away to my master.”

Her brother and her mother said, “Let the young lady stay with us a few days, at least ten. After that she will go.”
