If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of Yahweh your God.

Saul was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.^‡

Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

There was severe war against the Philistines all the days of Saul; and when Saul saw any mighty man or any valiant man, he took him into his service.

και ην ο πολεμος κραταιος επι τους αλλοφυλους πασας τας ημερας σαουλ και ιδων σαουλ παντα ανδρα δυνατον και παντα ανδρα υιον δυναμεως και συνηγαγεν αυτους προς αυτον

Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of Yahweh’s words.

Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.

Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;

Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 I will not return H7725 (QalImpf) with thee: for thou hast rejected H3988 (QalPerf) the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 and the Lord H3068 hath rejected H3988 (QalImpf) thee from being king H4428 over Israel. H3478

Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

And Samuel H8050 came no more H3254 (QalPerf) to see H7200 (QalInf) Saul H7586 until the day H3117 of his death: H4194 nevertheless H3588 Samuel H8050 mourned H56 (HithPerf) for Saul: H7586 and the Lord H3068 repented H5162 (NiphPerf) that he had made Saul H7586 king H4427 (HiphPerf) over Israel. και ου προσεθετο σαμουηλ ετι ιδειν τον σαουλ εως ημερας θανατου αυτου οτι επενθει σαμουηλ επι σαουλ και κυριος μετεμεληθη οτι εβασιλευσεν τον σαουλ επι ισραηλ

Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”

David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

I went out after him, struck him, and rescued it out of his mouth. When he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, struck him, and killed him.

David strapped his sword on his clothing and he tried to move, for he had not tested it. David said to Saul, “I can’t go with these, for I have not tested them.” Then David took them off.

And David H1732 girded H2296 (QalImpf) his sword H2719 upon his armour, H4055 and he assayed H2974 (HiphImpf) to go; H3212 (QalInf) for he had not proved H5254 (PielPerf) [it]. και εζωσεν τον δαυιδ την ρομφαιαν αυτου επανω του μανδυου αυτου και εκοπιασεν περιπατησας απαξ και δις και ειπεν δαυιδ προς σαουλ ου μη δυνωμαι πορευθηναι εν τουτοις οτι ου πεπειραμαι και αφαιρουσιν αυτα απ αυτου

David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

Saul sent messengers to seize David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, God’s Spirit came on Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied.

And Saul H7586 sent H7971 (QalImpf) messengers H4397 to take H3947 (QalInf) David: H1732 and when they saw H7200 (QalImpf) the company H3862 of the prophets H5030 prophesying, H5012 (NiphPtc) and Samuel H8050 standing H5975 (QalActPtc) [as] appointed H5324 (NiphPtc) over them, the Spirit H7307 of God H430 was upon the messengers H4397 of Saul, H7586 and they also prophesied. και απεστειλεν σαουλ αγγελους λαβειν τον δαυιδ και ειδαν την εκκλησιαν των προφητων και σαμουηλ ειστηκει καθεστηκως επ αυτων και εγενηθη επι τους αγγελους του σαουλ πνευμα θεου και προφητευουσιν

He also stripped off his clothes. He also prophesied before Samuel and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

He said, ‘Please let me go, for our family has a sacrifice in the city. My brother has commanded me to be there. Now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go away and see my brothers.’ Therefore he has not come to the king’s table.”

και ειπεν εξαποστειλον δη με οτι θυσια της φυλης ημιν εν τη πολει και ενετειλαντο προς με οι αδελφοι μου και νυν ει ευρηκα χαριν εν οφθαλμοις σου διασωθησομαι δη και οψομαι τους αδελφους μου δια τουτο ου παραγεγονεν επι την τραπεζαν του βασιλεως

Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Should this fellow come into my house?”

^[21:16] η ελαττουμαι επιλημπτων εγω οτι εισαγειοχατε αυτον επιλημπτευεσθαι προς με ουτος ουκ εισελευσεται εις οικιαν

Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men.

και συνηγοντο προς αυτον πας εν αναγκη και πας υποχρεως και πας κατωδυνος ψυχη και ην επ αυτων ηγουμενος και ησαν μετ αυτου ως τετρακοσιοι ανδρες

Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

When Saul H7586 heard H8085 (QalImpf) that David H1732 was discovered, H3045 (NiphPerf) and the men H582 that [were] with him, (now Saul H7586 abode H3427 (QalActPtc) in Gibeah H1390 under a tree H815 in Ramah, H7414 having his spear H2595 in his hand, H3027 and all his servants H5650 [were] standing H5324 (NiphPtc) about him;)

Saul said to his servants who stood around him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards? Will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds?

Then Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto his servants H5650 that stood H5324 (NiphPtc) about him, Hear now, H8085 (QalImpv) ye Benjamites; H1145 will the son H1121 of Jesse H3448 give H5414 (QalImpf) every one of you fields H7704 and vineyards, H3754 [and] make H7760 (QalImpf) you all captains H8269 of thousands, H505 and captains H8269 of hundreds; H3967

Is that why all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?”

οτι συγκεισθε παντες υμεις επ εμε και ουκ εστιν ο αποκαλυπτων το ωτιον μου εν τω διαθεσθαι τον υιον μου διαθηκην μετα του υιου ιεσσαι και ουκ εστιν πονων περι εμου εξ υμων και αποκαλυπτων το ωτιον μου οτι επηγειρεν ο υιος μου τον δουλον μου επ εμε εις εχθρον ως η ημερα αυτη

Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as it is today?”

και ειπεν αυτω σαουλ ινα τι συνεθου κατ εμου συ και ο υιος ιεσσαι δουναι σε αυτω αρτον και ρομφαιαν και ερωταν αυτω δια του θεου θεσθαι αυτον επ εμε εις εχθρον ως η ημερα αυτη

David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him. He said to Abiathar the priest, “Bring the ephod here.”

And David H1732 knew H3045 (QalImpf) that Saul H7586 secretly practised H2790 (HiphPtc) mischief H7451 against him; and he said H559 (QalImpf) to Abiathar H54 the priest, H3548 Bring hither H5066 (HiphImpv) the ephod. H646

και εγνω δαυιδ οτι ου παρασιωπα σαουλ περι αυτου την κακιαν και ειπεν δαυιδ προς αβιαθαρ τον ιερεα προσαγαγε το εφουδ κυριου

He said to him, “Don’t be afraid, for the hand of Saul my father won’t find you; and you will be king over Israel, and I will be next to you; and Saul my father knows that also.”

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Fear H3372 (QalImpf) not: for the hand H3027 of Saul H7586 my father H1 shall not find H4672 (QalImpf) thee; and thou shalt be king H4427 (QalImpf) over Israel, H3478 and I shall be next H4932 unto thee; and that also Saul H7586 my father H1 knoweth. και ειπεν προς αυτον μη φοβου οτι ου μη ευρη σε η χειρ σαουλ του πατρος μου και συ βασιλευσεις επι ισραηλ και εγω εσομαι σοι εις δευτερον και σαουλ ο πατηρ μου οιδεν ουτως

So Saul returned from pursuing David, and went against the Philistines. Therefore they called that place Sela Hammahlekoth.°

Wherefore Saul H7586 returned H7725 (QalImpf) from pursuing H7291 (QalInf) after H310 David, H1732 and went H3212 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) the Philistines: H6430 therefore they called H7121 (QalPerf) that place H4725 Selahammahlekoth. H5555

και ανεστρεψεν σαουλ μη καταδιωκειν οπισω δαυιδ και επορευθη εις συναντησιν των αλλοφυλων δια τουτο επεκληθη ο τοπος εκεινος πετρα η μερισθεισα

Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

And it came to pass afterward, H310 that David’s H1732 heart H3820 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) him, because he had cut off H3772 (QalPerf) Saul’s H7586 skirt. H3671

Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master and against all his house, for he is such a worthless fellow that one can’t speak to him.”

It will come to pass, when Yahweh has done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and has appointed you prince over Israel,

Abigail came to Nabal; and behold, he held a feast in his house like the feast of a king. Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing until the morning light.

The Ziphites came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert?”

Saul encamped in the hill of Hachilah, which is before the desert, by the way. But David stayed in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

Achish said, “Against whom have you made a raid today?” David said, “Against the South of Judah, against the South of the Jerahmeelites, and against the South of the Kenites.”

Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

He made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.

Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David.
