Behold, the day is ending. Stay here, that your heart may be merry; and tomorrow go on your way early, that you may go home.”

When they were by Jebus, the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, “Please come and let’s enter into this city of the Jebusites, and stay in it.”

ετι αυτων οντων κατα ιεβους και η ημερα κεκλικυια σφοδρα και ειπεν το παιδαριον προς τον κυριον αυτου δευρο δη και εκκλινωμεν εις την πολιν του ιεβουσαιου ταυτην και αυλισθωμεν εν αυτη

He said to his servant, “Come and let’s draw near to one of these places; and we will lodge in Gibeah, or in Ramah.”

Yet there is both straw and feed for our donkeys; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for your servant, and for the young man who is with your servants. There is no lack of anything.”

Then Boaz said to his servant who was set over the reapers, “Whose young lady is this?”

Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them. Haven’t I commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn.”

When she had risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and don’t reproach her.

They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.

I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.

υπερ του παιδαριου τουτου προσηυξαμην και εδωκεν μοι κυριος το αιτημα μου ο ητησαμην παρ αυτου

Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. The child served Yahweh before Eli the priest.

And Elkanah H511 went H3212 (QalImpf) to Ramah H7414 to his house. H1004 And the child H5288 did H1961 (QalPerf) minister H8334 (PielPtc) unto the Lord H3068 before H6440 Eli H5941 the priest. H3548

The sin of the young men was very great before Yahweh; for the men despised Yahweh’s offering.

But Samuel ministered before Yahweh, being a child, clothed with a linen ephod.

Yahweh visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. The child Samuel grew before Yahweh.

The child Samuel grew on, and increased in favor both with Yahweh and also with men.

και το παιδαριον σαμουηλ επορευετο και εμεγαλυνετο και αγαθον και μετα κυριου και μετα ανθρωπων

The child Samuel ministered to Yahweh before Eli. Yahweh’s word was rare in those days. There were not many visions, then.

And the child H5288 Samuel H8050 ministered H8334 (PielPtc) unto the Lord H3068 before H6440 Eli. H5941 And the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 was precious H3368 in those days; H3117 [there was] no open H6555 (NiphPtc) vision. H2377

Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.

And the Lord H3068 called H7121 (QalInf) Samuel H8050 again H3254 (HiphImpf) the third time. H7992 And he arose H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) to Eli, H5941 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Here [am] I; for thou didst call H7121 (QalPerf) me. She named the child Ichabod,° saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

1 Samuel 4:21 “Ichabod” means “no glory”.

The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Now take one of the servants with you, and arise, go look for the donkeys.”

και απωλοντο αι ονοι κις πατρος σαουλ και ειπεν κις προς σαουλ τον υιον αυτου λαβε μετα σεαυτου εν των παιδαριων και αναστητε και πορευθητε και ζητησατε τας ονους

When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come! Let’s return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and be anxious for us.”

αυτων ελθοντων εις την σιφ και σαουλ ειπεν τω παιδαριω αυτου τω μετ αυτου δευρο και αναστρεψωμεν μη ανεις ο πατηρ μου τας ονους φροντιζη περι ημων

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel° of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

1 Samuel 9:8 A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so ¹⁄₄ shekel would be a small coin of about 2.5 grams.

And the servant H5288 answered H6030 (QalInf) Saul H7586 again, H3254 (HiphImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, I have H4672 (NiphPerf) here at hand H3027 the fourth part H7253 of a shekel H8255 of silver: H3701 [that] will I give H5414 (QalPerf) to the man H376 of God, H430 to tell H5046 (HiphPerf) us our way. Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come! Let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”

αυτων καταβαινοντων εις μερος της πολεως και σαμουηλ ειπεν τω σαουλ ειπον τω νεανισκω και διελθετω εμπροσθεν ημων και συ στηθι ως σημερον και ακουσον ρημα θεου

Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

Now it happened on a day that Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the Philistines’ garrison that is on the other side.” But he didn’t tell his father.

και γινεται ημερα και ειπεν ιωναθαν υιος σαουλ τω παιδαριω τω αιροντι τα σκευη αυτου δευρο και διαβωμεν εις μεσσαβ των αλλοφυλων την εν τω περαν εκεινω και τω πατρι αυτου ουκ απηγγειλεν

Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, “Come! Let’s go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised. It may be that Yahweh will work for us, for there is no restraint on Yahweh to save by many or by few.”

And Jonathan H3083 said H559 (QalImpf) to the young man H5288 that bare H5375 (QalActPtc) his armour, H3627 Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us go over H5674 (QalImpf) unto the garrison H4673 of these uncircumcised: H6189 it may be that the Lord H3068 will work H6213 (QalImpf) for us: for [there is] no restraint H4622 to the Lord H3068 to save H3467 (HiphInf) by many H7227 or by few. Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

Then one of the young men answered and said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and Yahweh is with him.”

Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.”

When the Philistine looked around and saw David, he disdained him; for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and had a good looking face.

When Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the captain of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I can’t tell.”

Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, you young man?” David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.”

Behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ If I tell the boy, ‘Behold, the arrows are on this side of you. Take them;’ then come, for there is peace to you and no danger, as Yahweh lives.

και ιδου αποστελω το παιδαριον λεγων δευρο ευρε μοι την σχιζαν εαν ειπω λεγων τω παιδαριω ωδε η σχιζα απο σου και ωδε λαβε αυτην παραγινου οτι ειρηνη σοι και ουκ εστιν λογος ζη κυριος

In the morning, Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him.

And it came to pass in the morning, H1242 that Jonathan H3083 went out H3318 (QalImpf) into the field H7704 at the time appointed H4150 with David, H1732 and a little H6996 lad H5288 with him.

και εγενηθη πρωι και εξηλθεν ιωναθαν εις αγρον καθως εταξατο εις το μαρτυριον δαυιδ και παιδαριον μικρον μετ αυτου

He said to his boy, “Run, find now the arrows which I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

και ειπεν τω παιδαριω δραμε ευρε μοι τας σχιζας εν αις εγω ακοντιζω και το παιδαριον εδραμε και αυτος ηκοντιζε τη σχιζη και παρηγαγεν αυτην

When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”

And when the lad H5288 was come H935 (QalImpf) to the place H4725 of the arrow H2678 which Jonathan H3083 had shot, H3384 (QalPerf) Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 (QalImpf) after H310 the lad, H5288 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is] not the arrow H2678 beyond H1973 thee?

και ηλθεν το παιδαριον εως του τοπου της σχιζης ου ηκοντιζεν ιωναθαν και ανεβοησεν ιωναθαν οπισω του νεανιου και ειπεν εκει η σχιζα απο σου και επεκεινα

Jonathan cried after the boy, “Go fast! Hurry! Don’t delay!” Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.

And Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 (QalImpf) after H310 the lad, H5288 Make speed, H4120 haste, H2363 (QalImpv) stay H5975 (QalImpf) not. And Jonathan’s H3083 lad H5288 gathered up H3950 (PielImpf) the arrows, H2671 (Qere) H2678 and came H935 (QalImpf) to his master. H113

και ανεβοησεν ιωναθαν οπισω του παιδαριου αυτου λεγων ταχυνας σπευσον και μη στης και ανελεξεν το παιδαριον ιωναθαν τας σχιζας προς τον κυριον αυτου

But the boy didn’t know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

But the lad H5288 knew H3045 (QalPerf) not any thing: H3972 only Jonathan H3083 and David H1732 knew H3045 (QalPerf) the matter. H1697

και το παιδαριον ουκ εγνω ουθεν παρεξ ιωναθαν και δαυιδ εγνωσαν το ρημα

Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy, and said to him, “Go, carry them to the city.”

And Jonathan H3083 gave H5414 (QalImpf) his artillery H3627 unto his lad, H5288 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Go, H3212 (QalImpv) carry H935 (HiphImpv) [them] to the city. H5892

και ιωναθαν εδωκεν τα σκευη αυτου επι το παιδαριον αυτου και ειπεν τω παιδαριω αυτου πορευου εισελθε εις την πολιν

As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept with one another, and David wept the most.

και ως εισηλθεν το παιδαριον και δαυιδ ανεστη απο του εργαβ και επεσεν επι προσωπον αυτου και προσεκυνησεν αυτω τρις και κατεφιλησεν εκαστος τον πλησιον αυτου και εκλαυσεν εκαστος τω πλησιον αυτου εως συντελειας μεγαλης

David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

The priest answered David, and said, “I have no common bread, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.”

David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us as usual these three days. When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was only a common journey. How much more then today shall their vessels be holy?”
