The men pursued them along the way to the fords of the Jordan River. As soon as those who pursued them had gone out, they shut the gate.

She said to the men, “I know that Yahweh has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you.

The men said to her, “Our life for yours, if you don’t talk about this business of ours; and it shall be, when Yahweh gives us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with you.”

For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness until all the nation, even the men of war who came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they didn’t listen to Yahweh’s voice. Yahweh swore to them that he wouldn’t let them see the land which Yahweh swore to their fathers that he would give us, a land flowing with milk and honey.

For the children H1121 of Israel H3478 walked H1980 (QalPerf) forty H705 years H8141 in the wilderness, H4057 till all the people H1471 that were men H582 of war, H4421 which came out H3318 (QalActPtc) of Egypt, H4714 were consumed, H8552 (QalInf) because they obeyed H8085 (QalPerf) not the voice H6963 of the Lord: H3068 unto whom the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) that he would not shew H7200 (HiphInf) them the land, H776 which the Lord H3068 sware H7650 (NiphPerf) unto their fathers H1 that he would give H5414 (QalInf) us, a land H776 that floweth H2100 (QalActPtc) with milk H2461 and honey. τεσσαρακοντα γαρ και δυο ετη ανεστραπται ισραηλ εν τη ερημω τη μαδβαριτιδι διο απεριτμητοι ησαν οι πλειστοι αυτων των μαχιμων των εξεληλυθοτων εκ γης αιγυπτου οι απειθησαντες των εντολων του θεου οις και διωρισεν μη ιδειν αυτους την γην ην ωμοσεν κυριος τοις πατρασιν αυτων δουναι ημιν γην ρεουσαν γαλα και μελι

All of your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days.

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house, and bring the woman and all that she has out from there, as you swore to her.”

και τοις δυσιν νεανισκοις τοις κατασκοπευσασιν ειπεν ιησους εισελθατε εις την οικιαν της γυναικος και εξαγαγετε αυτην εκειθεν και οσα εστιν αυτη

Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.

και απεστειλεν ιησους ανδρας εις γαι η εστιν κατα βαιθηλ λεγων κατασκεψασθε την γαι και ανεβησαν οι ανδρες και κατεσκεψαντο την γαι

So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai.

So there went up H5927 (QalImpf) thither of the people H5971 about three H7969 thousand H505 men: H376 and they fled H5127 (QalImpf) before H6440 the men H582 of Ai. H5857

και ανεβησαν ωσει τρισχιλιοι ανδρες και εφυγον απο προσωπου των ανδρων γαι

The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them. They chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.

And the men H582 of Ai H5857 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) of them about thirty H7970 and six H8337 men: H376 for they chased H7291 (QalImpf) them from before H6440 the gate H8179 even unto Shebarim, H7671 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them in the going down:^§ H4174 wherefore the hearts H3824 of the people H5971 melted, H4549 (NiphImpf) and became as water. When the king of Ai saw it, they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn’t know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

And it came to pass, when the king H4428 of Ai H5857 saw H7200 (QalInf) it, that they hasted H4116 (PielImpf) and rose up early, H7925 (HiphImpf) and the men H582 of the city H5892 went out H3318 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) Israel H3478 to battle, H4421 he and all his people, H5971 at a time appointed, H4150 before H6440 the plain; H6160 but he wist H3045 (QalPerf) not that there were liers in ambush H693 (QalActPtc) against him behind H310 the city. και εγενετο ως ειδεν βασιλευς γαι εσπευσεν και εξηλθεν εις συναντησιν αυτοις επ ευθειας εις τον πολεμον αυτος και πας ο λαος ο μετ αυτου και αυτος ουκ ηδει οτι ενεδρα αυτω εστιν οπισω της πολεως

When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

And when the men H582 of Ai H5857 looked H6437 (QalImpf) behind H310 them, they saw, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended up H5927 (QalPerf) to heaven, H8064 and they had no power^§ H3027 to flee H5127 (QalInf) this way or that way: H2008 and the people H5971 that fled H5127 (QalPtc) to the wilderness H4057 turned back H2015 (NiphPerf) upon the pursuers. και περιβλεψαντες οι κατοικοι γαι εις τα οπισω αυτων και εθεωρουν καπνον αναβαινοντα εκ της πολεως εις τον ουρανον και ουκετι ειχον που φυγωσιν ωδε η ωδε

When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned back and killed the men of Ai.

And when Joshua H3091 and all Israel H3478 saw H7200 (QalPerf) that the ambush H693 (QalActPtc) had taken H3920 (QalPerf) the city, H5892 and that the smoke H6227 of the city H5892 ascended, H5927 (QalPerf) then they turned again, H7725 (QalImpf) and slew H5221 (HiphImpf) the men H582 of Ai. H5857

και ιησους και πας ισραηλ ειδον οτι ελαβον τα ενεδρα την πολιν και οτι ανεβη ο καπνος της πολεως εις τον ουρανον και μεταβαλομενοι επαταξαν τους ανδρας της γαι

All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the people of Ai.

And so it was, that all that fell H5307 (QalActPtc) that day, H3117 both of men H376 and women, H802 were twelve H8147 H6240 thousand, H505 even all the men H582 of Ai. H5857

και εγενηθησαν οι πεσοντες εν τη ημερα εκεινη απο ανδρος και εως γυναικος δωδεκα χιλιαδες παντας τους κατοικουντας γαι

The men sampled their provisions, and didn’t ask counsel from Yahweh’s mouth.

And the men H582 took H3947 (QalImpf) of their victuals,^§ H6718 and asked H7592 (QalPerf) not counsel at the mouth H6310 of the Lord. H3068
