[1] But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore Yahweh’s anger burned against the children of Israel.
[2] Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, “Go up and spy out the land.” The men went up and spied out Ai.
[3] They returned to Joshua, and said to him, “Don’t let all the people go up, but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Don’t make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them.”
[4] So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai.
[5] The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them. They chased them from before the gate even to Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water.
[6] Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before Yahweh’s ark until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
[7] Joshua said, “Alas, Lord Yahweh, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan!
[8] Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after Israel has turned their backs before their enemies?
[9] For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?”
[10] Yahweh said to Joshua, “Get up! Why have you fallen on your face like that?
[11] Israel has sinned. Yes, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. Yes, they have even taken some of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff.
[12] Therefore the children of Israel can’t stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you.
[13] Get up! Sanctify the people, and say, ‘Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, “There is a devoted thing among you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you.”
[14] In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which Yahweh selects shall come near by families. The family which Yahweh selects shall come near by households. The household which Yahweh selects shall come near man by man.
[15] It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burned with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed Yahweh’s covenant, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.’ ”
[16] So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected.
[17] He brought near the family of Judah, and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected.
[18] He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
[19] Joshua said to Achan, “My son, please give glory to Yahweh, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done! Don’t hide it from me!”
[20] Achan answered Joshua, and said, “I have truly sinned against Yahweh, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done.
[21] When I saw among the plunder a beautiful Babylonian robe, two hundred shekels° of silver, and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Behold, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it.”
[22] So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Behold, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it.
[23] They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before Yahweh.
[24] Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
[25] Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? Yahweh will trouble you today.” All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.
[26] They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. Yahweh turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called “The valley of Achor” to this day.

[11] Israel H3478 hath sinned H2398 (8804), and they have also transgressed H5674 (8804) my covenant H1285 which I commanded H6680 (8765) them: for they have even taken H3947 (8804) of the accursed thing H2764, and have also stolen H1589 (8804), and dissembled H3584 (8765) also, and they have put H7760 (8804) [it] even among their own stuff H3627.

[17] And he brought H7126 (8686) the family H4940 of Judah H3063; and he took H3920 (8799) the family H4940 of the Zarhites H2227: and he brought H7126 (8686) the family H4940 of the Zarhites H2227 man H1397 by man H1397; and Zabdi H2067 was taken H3920 (8735):
[18] And he brought H7126 (8686) his household H1004 man H1397 by man H1397; and Achan H5912, the son H1121 of Carmi H3756, the son H1121 of Zabdi H2067, the son H1121 of Zerah H2226, of the tribe H4294 of Judah H3063, was taken H3920 (8735).
[19] And Joshua H3091 said H559 (8799) unto Achan H5912, My son H1121, give H7760 (8798), I pray thee, glory H3519 to the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478, and make H5414 (8798) confession H8426 unto him; and tell H5046 (8685) me now what thou hast done H6213 (8804); hide H3582 (8762) [it] not from me.
[20] And Achan H5912 answered H6030 (8799) Joshua H3091, and said H559 (8799), Indeed H546 I have sinned H2398 (8804) against the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478, and thus and thus have I done H6213 (8804):
[21] When I saw H7200 (8799) among the spoils H7998 a H259 goodly H2896 Babylonish H8152 garment H155, and two hundred H3967 shekels H8255 of silver H3701, and a H259 wedge H3956 of gold H2091 of fifty H2572 shekels H8255 weight H4948, then I coveted H2530 (8799) them, and took H3947 (8799) them; and, behold, they [are] hid H2934 (8803) in the earth H776 in the midst H8432 of my tent H168, and the silver H3701 under it.
[22] So Joshua H3091 sent H7971 (8799) messengers H4397, and they ran H7323 (8799) unto the tent H168; and, behold, [it was] hid H2934 (8803) in his tent H168, and the silver H3701 under it.
[23] And they took H3947 (8799) them out of the midst H8432 of the tent H168, and brought H935 (8686) them unto Joshua H3091, and unto all the children H1121 of Israel H3478, and laid them out H3332 (8686) before H6440 the LORD H3068.
[24] And Joshua H3091, and all Israel H3478 with him, took H3947 (8799) Achan H5912 the son H1121 of Zerah H2226, and the silver H3701, and the garment H155, and the wedge H3956 of gold H2091, and his sons H1121, and his daughters H1323, and his oxen H7794, and his asses H2543, and his sheep H6629, and his tent H168, and all that he had: and they brought H5927 (8686) them unto the valley H6010 of Achor H5911.
[25] And Joshua H3091 said H559 (8799), Why H4100 hast thou troubled H5916 (8804) us? the LORD H3068 shall trouble H5916 (8799) thee this day H3117. And all Israel H3478 stoned H7275 (8799) him with stones H68, and burned H8313 (8799) them with fire H784, after they had stoned H5619 (8799) them with stones H68.
[26] And they raised H6965 (8686) over him a great H1419 heap H1530 of stones H68 unto this day H3117. So the LORD H3068 turned H7725 (8799) from the fierceness H2740 of his anger H639. Wherefore the name H8034 of that place H4725 was called H7121 (8804), The valley H6010 of Achor H5911, unto this day H3117.

[2] And Joshua sendeth men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-Aven, on the east of Bethel, and speaketh unto them, saying, ‘Go up and spy the land;’ and the men go up and spy Ai,
[3] and they turn back unto Joshua, and say unto him, ‘Let not all the people go up; let about two thousand men, or about three thousand men, go up, and they smite Ai; cause not all the people to labour thither; for they are few.’
[4] And there go up of the people thither about three thousand men, and they flee before the men of Ai,

[7] And Joshua saith, ‘Ah, Lord Jehovah, why hast Thou at all caused this people to pass over the Jordan, to give us into the hand of the Amorite to destroy us?-and oh that we had been willing-and we dwell beyond the Jordan!
[8] Oh, Lord, what do I say, after that Israel hath turned the neck before its enemies?
[9] and the Canaanite and all the inhabitants of the land do hear, and have come round against us, and cut off our name out of the earth; and what dost Thou do for Thy great name?’
[10] And Jehovah saith unto Joshua, ‘Rise for thee, why is this?-thou art falling on thy face?
[11] Israel hath sinned, and also they have transgressed My covenant which I commanded them, and also taken of the devoted thing, and also stolen, and also deceived, and also put it among their vessels,
[12] and the sons of Israel have not been able to stand before their enemies; the neck they turn before their enemies, for they have become a devoted thing; I add not to be with you-if ye destroy not the devoted thing out of your midst.
[13] ‘Rise, sanctify the people, and thou hast said, Sanctify yourselves for to-morrow; for thus said Jehovah, God of Israel, A devoted thing is in thy midst, O Israel, thou art not able to stand before thine enemies till your turning aside of the devoted thing out of your midst;
[14] and ye have been brought near in the morning by your tribes, and it hath been, the tribe which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by families, and the family which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by households, and the household which Jehovah doth capture doth draw near by men;
[15] and it hath been, he who is captured with the devoted thing is burnt with fire, he and all that he hath, because he hath transgressed the covenant of Jehovah, and because he hath done folly in Israel.’
[16] And Joshua riseth early in the morning, and bringeth Israel near by its tribes, and the tribe of Judah is captured;
[17] and he bringeth near the family of Judah, and he captureth the family of the Zarhite; and he bringeth near the family of the Zarhite by men, and Zabdi is captured;
[18] and he bringeth near his household by men, and Achan-son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah-is captured.
[19] And Joshua saith unto Achan, ‘My son, put, I pray thee, honour on Jehovah, God of Israel, and give to Him thanks, and declare, I pray thee, to me, what thou hast done-hide not from me.’
[20] And Achan answereth Joshua, and saith, ‘Truly I have sinned against Jehovah, God of Israel, and thus and thus I have done;
[21] and I see among the spoil a goodly robe of Shinar, and two hundred shekels of silver, and one wedge of gold, whose weight is fifty shekels, and I desire them, and take them; and lo, they are hid in the earth, in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it.’
[22] And Joshua sendeth messengers, and they run unto the tent, and lo, it is hidden in his tent, and the silver under it;
[23] and they take them out of the midst of the tent, and bring them in unto Joshua, and unto all the sons of Israel, and pour them out before Jehovah.
[24] And Joshua taketh Achan son of Zerah, and the silver, and the robe, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his ox, and his ass, and his flock, and his tent, and all that he hath, and all Israel with him, and they cause them to go up the valley of Achor.
[25] And Joshua saith, ‘What! thou hast troubled us!-Jehovah doth trouble thee this day;’ and all Israel cast stones at him, and they burn them with fire, and they stone them with stones,
[26] and they raise up over him a great heap of stones unto this day, and Jehovah turneth back from the heat of His anger, therefore hath one called the name of that place ‘Valley of Achor’ till this day.
