Joshua 22 (WEBP)

[1] Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh,
[2] and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you.
[3] You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of Yahweh your God.
[4] Now Yahweh your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan.
[5] Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
[6] So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents.
[7] Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but Joshua gave to the other half among their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them,
[8] and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much wealth to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with bronze, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the plunder of your enemies with your brothers.”
[9] The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses.
[10] When they came to the region near the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan, a great altar to look at.
[11] The children of Israel heard this, “Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar along the border of the land of Canaan, in the region around the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the children of Israel.”
[12] When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war.
[13] The children of Israel sent to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest.
[14] With him were ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were each head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel.
[15] They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,
[16] “The whole congregation of Yahweh says, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against Yahweh?
[17] Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of Yahweh,
[18] that you must turn away today from following Yahweh? It will be, since you rebel today against Yahweh, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
[19] However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than Yahweh our God’s altar.
[20] Didn’t Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn’t perish alone in his iniquity.’ ”
[21] Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel,
[22] “The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, the Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against Yahweh (don’t save us today),
[23] that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Yahweh; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself require it.
[24] “If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, “What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?
[25] For Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in Yahweh.” ’ So your children might make our children cease from fearing Yahweh.
[26] “Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice;
[27] but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of Yahweh before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;’ that your children may not tell our children in time to come, ‘You have no portion in Yahweh.’
[28] “Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of Yahweh’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.” ’
[29] “Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away today from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides Yahweh our God’s altar that is before his tabernacle!”
[30] When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well.
[31] Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of Yahweh’s hand.”
[32] Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
[33] The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived.
[34] The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar “A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God.”

Joshua 22 (KJVS)

[1] Then Joshua H3091 called H7121 (8799) the Reubenites H7206, and the Gadites H1425, and the half H2677 tribe H4294 of Manasseh H4519,
[2] And said H559 (8799) unto them, Ye have kept H8104 (8804) all that Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of the LORD H3068 commanded H6680 (8765) you, and have obeyed H8085 (8799) my voice H6963 in all that I commanded H6680 (8765) you:
[3] Ye have not left H5800 (8804) your brethren H251 these many H7227 days H3117 unto this day H3117, but have kept H8104 (8804) the charge H4931 of the commandment H4687 of the LORD H3068 your God H430.
[4] And now the LORD H3068 your God H430 hath given rest H5117 (8689) unto your brethren H251, as he promised H1696 (8765) them: therefore now return H6437 (8798) ye, and get H3212 (8798) you unto your tents H168, [and] unto the land H776 of your possession H272, which Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of the LORD H3068 gave H5414 (8804) you on the other side H5676 Jordan H3383.
[5] But take diligent H3966 heed H8104 (8798) to do H6213 (8800) the commandment H4687 and the law H8451, which Moses H4872 the servant H5650 of the LORD H3068 charged H6680 (8765) you, to love H157 (8800) the LORD H3068 your God H430, and to walk H3212 (8800) in all his ways H1870, and to keep H8104 (8800) his commandments H4687, and to cleave H1692 (8800) unto him, and to serve H5647 (8800) him with all your heart H3824 and with all your soul H5315.
[6] So Joshua H3091 blessed H1288 (8762) them, and sent them away H7971 (8762): and they went H3212 (8799) unto their tents H168.
[7] Now to the [one] half H2677 of the tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 Moses H4872 had given H5414 (8804) [possession] in Bashan H1316: but unto the [other] half H2677 thereof gave H5414 (8804) Joshua H3091 among H5973 their brethren H251 on this side H5676 Jordan H3383 westward H3220. And when Joshua H3091 sent them away H7971 (8765) also unto their tents H168, then he blessed H1288 (8762) them,
[8] And he spake H559 (8799) unto them, saying H559 (8800), Return H7725 (8798) with much H7227 riches H5233 unto your tents H168, and with very H3966 much H7227 cattle H4735, with silver H3701, and with gold H2091, and with brass H5178, and with iron H1270, and with very H3966 much H7235 (8687) raiment H8008: divide H2505 (8798) the spoil H7998 of your enemies H341 (8802) with your brethren H251.
[9] And the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 returned H7725 (8799), and departed H3212 (8799) from the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of Shiloh H7887, which [is] in the land H776 of Canaan H3667, to go H3212 (8800) unto the country H776 of Gilead H1568, to the land H776 of their possession H272, whereof they were possessed H270 (8738), according to the word H6310 of the LORD H3068 by the hand H3027 of Moses H4872.
[10] And when they came H935 (8799) unto the borders H1552 of Jordan H3383, that [are] in the land H776 of Canaan H3667, the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 built H1129 (8799) there an altar H4196 by Jordan H3383, a great H1419 altar H4196 to see to H4758.
[11] And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 heard H8085 (8799) say H559 (8800), Behold, the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 have built H1129 (8804) an altar H4196 over against H4136 the land H776 of Canaan H3667, in the borders H1552 of Jordan H3383, at the passage H5676 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478.
[12] And when the children H1121 of Israel H3478 heard H8085 (8799) [of it], the whole congregation H5712 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 gathered themselves together H6950 (8735) at Shiloh H7887, to go up H5927 (8800) to war H6635 against them.
[13] And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 sent H7971 (8799) unto the children H1121 of Reuben H7205, and to the children H1121 of Gad H1410, and to the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519, into the land H776 of Gilead H1568, Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548,
[14] And with him ten H6235 princes H5387, of each H259 H259 chief H5387 H5387 house H1004 a prince H1 throughout all the tribes H4294 of Israel H3478; and each one H376 [was] an head H7218 of the house H1004 of their fathers H1 among the thousands H505 of Israel H3478.
[15] And they came H935 (8799) unto the children H1121 of Reuben H7205, and to the children H1121 of Gad H1410, and to the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519, unto the land H776 of Gilead H1568, and they spake H1696 (8762) with them, saying H559 (8800),
[16] Thus saith H559 (8804) the whole congregation H5712 of the LORD H3068, What trespass H4604 [is] this that ye have committed H4603 (8804) against the God H430 of Israel H3478, to turn away H7725 (8800) this day H3117 from following H310 the LORD H3068, in that ye have builded H1129 (8800) you an altar H4196, that ye might rebel H4775 (8800) this day H3117 against the LORD H3068?
[17] [Is] the iniquity H5771 of Peor H6465 too little H4592 for us, from which we are not cleansed H2891 (8694) until this day H3117, although there was a plague H5063 in the congregation H5712 of the LORD H3068,
[18] But that ye must turn away H7725 (8799) this day H3117 from following H310 the LORD H3068? and it will be, [seeing] ye rebel H4775 (8799) to day H3117 against the LORD H3068, that to morrow H4279 he will be wroth H7107 (8799) with the whole congregation H5712 of Israel H3478.
[19] Notwithstanding H389, if the land H776 of your possession H272 [be] unclean H2931, [then] pass ye over H5674 (8798) unto the land H776 of the possession H272 of the LORD H3068, wherein the LORD’S H3068 tabernacle H4908 dwelleth H7931 (8804), and take possession H270 (8734) among H8432 us: but rebel H4775 (8799) not against the LORD H3068, nor H408 rebel H4775 (8799) against us, in building H1129 (8800) you an altar H4196 beside H1107 the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 our God H430.
[20] Did not Achan H5912 the son H1121 of Zerah H2226 commit H4603 (8804) a trespass H4604 in the accursed thing H2764, and wrath H7110 fell H1961 (8804) on all the congregation H5712 of Israel H3478? and that man H376 perished H1478 (8804) not alone H259 in his iniquity H5771.
[21] Then the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the half H2677 tribe H7626 of Manasseh H4519 answered H6030 (8799), and said H1696 (8762) unto the heads H7218 of the thousands H505 of Israel H3478,
[22] The LORD H3068 God H410 of gods H430, the LORD H3068 God H410 of gods H430, he knoweth H3045 (8802), and Israel H3478 he shall know H3045 (8799); if [it be] in rebellion H4777, or if in transgression H4604 against the LORD H3068, (save H3467 (8686) us not this day H3117,)
[23] That we have built H1129 (8800) us an altar H4196 to turn H7725 (8800) from following H310 the LORD H3068, or if to offer H5927 (8687) thereon burnt offering H5930 or meat offering H4503, or if to offer H6213 (8800) peace H8002 offerings H2077 thereon, let the LORD H3068 himself require H1245 (8762) [it];
[24] And if we have not [rather] done H6213 (8804) it for fear H1674 of [this] thing H1697, saying H559 (8800), In time to come H4279 your children H1121 might speak H559 (8799) unto our children H1121, saying H559 (8800), What have ye to do with the LORD H3068 God H430 of Israel H3478?
[25] For the LORD H3068 hath made H5414 (8804) Jordan H3383 a border H1366 between us and you, ye children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and children H1121 of Gad H1410; ye have no part H2506 in the LORD H3068: so shall your children H1121 make H7673 our children H1121 cease H7673 (8689) from H1115 fearing H3372 (8800) the LORD H3068.
[26] Therefore we said H559 (8799), Let us now prepare H6213 (8799) to build H1129 (8800) us an altar H4196, not for burnt offering H5930, nor for sacrifice H2077:
[27] But [that] it [may be] a witness H5707 between us, and you, and our generations H1755 after H310 us, that we might do H5647 (8800) the service H5656 of the LORD H3068 before H6440 him with our burnt offerings H5930, and with our sacrifices H2077, and with our peace offerings H8002; that your children H1121 may not say H559 (8799) to our children H1121 in time to come H4279, Ye have no part H2506 in the LORD H3068.
[28] Therefore said H559 (8799) we, that it shall be, when they should [so] say H559 (8799) to us or to our generations H1755 in time to come H4279, that we may say H559 (8804) [again], Behold H7200 (8798) the pattern H8403 of the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068, which our fathers H1 made H6213 (8804), not for burnt offerings H5930, nor for sacrifices H2077; but it [is] a witness H5707 between us and you.
[29] God forbid H2486 that we should rebel H4775 (8800) against the LORD H3068, and turn H7725 (8800) this day H3117 from following H310 the LORD H3068, to build H1129 (8800) an altar H4196 for burnt offerings H5930, for meat offerings H4503, or for sacrifices H2077, beside the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 our God H430 that [is] before H6440 his tabernacle H4908.
[30] And when Phinehas H6372 the priest H3548, and the princes H5387 of the congregation H5712 and heads H7218 of the thousands H505 of Israel H3478 which [were] with him, heard H8085 (8799) the words H1697 that the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 and the children H1121 of Manasseh H4519 spake H1696 (8765), it pleased H3190 (8799) H5869 them.
[31] And Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548 said H559 (8799) unto the children H1121 of Reuben H7205, and to the children H1121 of Gad H1410, and to the children H1121 of Manasseh H4519, This day H3117 we perceive H3045 (8804) that the LORD H3068 [is] among H8432 us, because ye have not committed H4603 (8804) this trespass H4604 against the LORD H3068: now H227 ye have delivered H5337 (8689) the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068.
[32] And Phinehas H6372 the son H1121 of Eleazar H499 the priest H3548, and the princes H5387, returned H7725 (8799) from the children H1121 of Reuben H7205, and from the children H1121 of Gad H1410, out of the land H776 of Gilead H1568, unto the land H776 of Canaan H3667, to the children H1121 of Israel H3478, and brought H7725 them word H1697 again H7725 (8686).
[33] And the thing H1697 pleased H3190 (8799) H5869 the children H1121 of Israel H3478; and the children H1121 of Israel H3478 blessed H1288 (8762) God H430, and did not intend H559 (8804) to go up H5927 (8800) against them in battle H6635, to destroy H7843 (8763) the land H776 wherein the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and Gad H1410 dwelt H3427 (8802).
[34] And the children H1121 of Reuben H7205 and the children H1121 of Gad H1410 called H7121 (8799) the altar H4196 [Ed]: for it [shall be] a witness H5707 between us that the LORD H3068 [is] God H430.

Young’s Literal Translation

Joshua 22 (YLT)

[1] Then Joshua calleth for the Reubenite, and for the Gadite, and for the half of the tribe of Manasseh,
[2] and saith unto them, ‘Ye-ye have kept the whole of that which Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded you, and ye hearken to my voice, to all that I have commanded you;
[3] ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, and have kept the charge-the command of Jehovah your God.
[4] ‘And, now, Jehovah your God hath given rest to your brethren, as He spake to them; and now, turn ye, and go for yourselves to your tents, unto the land of your possession, which Moses, servant of Jehovah, hath given to you beyond the Jordan.
[5] Only, be very watchful to do the command and the law which Moses, servant of Jehovah, commanded you, to love Jehovah your God, and to walk in all His ways, and to keep His commands, and to cleave to Him, and to serve Him, with all your heart, and with all your soul.’
[6] And Joshua blesseth them, and sendeth them away, and they go unto their tents.
[7] And to the half of the tribe of Manasseh hath Moses given, in Bashan, and to its other half hath Joshua given with their brethren beyond the Jordan westward; and also when Joshua hath sent them away unto their tents, then he doth bless them,
[8] and speak unto them, saying, ‘With great riches turn ye back unto your tents, and with very much cattle, with silver, and with gold, and with brass, and with iron, and with very much raiment; divide the spoil of your enemies with your brethren.’
[9] And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, turn back and go from the sons of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go unto the land of Gilead, unto the land of their possession, in which they have possession, according to the command of Jehovah, by the hand of Moses;
[10] and they come in unto the districts of the Jordan, which are in the land of Canaan, and the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, build there an altar by the Jordan-a great altar for appearance.
[11] And the sons of Israel hear, saying, ‘Lo, the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, have built the altar over-against the land of Canaan, on the districts of the Jordan, at the passage of the sons of Israel.’
[12] And the sons of Israel hear, and all the company of the sons of Israel is assembled at Shiloh, to go up against them to war;
[13] and the sons of Israel send unto the sons of Reuben, and unto the sons of Gad, and unto the half of the tribe of Manasseh-unto the land of Gilead-Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest,
[14] and ten princes with him, one prince, one prince, for a house of a father, for all the tribes of Israel, and each of them a head of a house of their fathers, for the thousands of Israel.
[15] And they come in unto the sons of Reuben, and unto the sons of Gad, and unto the half of the tribe of Manasseh, unto the land of Gilead, and speak with them, saying,
[16] ‘Thus said all the company of Jehovah, What is this trespass which ye have trespassed against the God of Israel, to turn back to-day from after Jehovah, by your building for you an altar, for your rebelling to-day against Jehovah?
[17] Is the iniquity of Peor little to us, from which we have not been cleansed till this day-and the plague is in the company of Jehovah,
[18] that ye turn back to-day from after Jehovah? and it hath been-ye rebel to-day against Jehovah-and to-morrow against all the company of Israel He is wroth.
[19] ‘And surely, if the land of your possession is unclean, pass over for you unto the land of the possession of Jehovah, where the tabernacle of Jehovah hath tabernacled, and have possession in our midst; and against Jehovah rebel not, and against us rebel not, by your building for you an altar, besides the altar of Jehovah our God.
[20] Did not Achan son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and on all the company of Israel there was wrath? and he alone expired not in his iniquity.’
[21] And the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the half of the tribe of Manasseh, answer and speak with the heads of the thousands of Israel:
[22] ‘The God of gods-Jehovah, the God of gods-Jehovah, He is knowing, and Israel, he doth know, if in rebellion, and if in trespass against Jehovah (Thou dost not save us this day!)
[23] we are building for ourselves an altar to turn back from after Jehovah, and if to cause to go up on it burnt-offering and present, and if to make on it peace-offerings-Jehovah Himself doth require it.
[24] ‘And if not, from fear of this thing we have done it, saying, Hereafter your sons do speak to ours sons, saying, What to you and to Jehovah God of Israel?
[25] for a border hath Jehovah put between us and you, O sons of Reuben, and sons of Gad-Jordan; ye have no portion in Jehovah-and your sons have caused our sons to cease, not to fear Jehovah.
[26] ‘And we say, Pray let us prepare for ourselves to build the altar-not for burnt-offering nor for sacrifice-
[27] but a witness it is between us and you, and between our generations after us, to do the service of Jehovah before Him with our burnt-offerings, and with our sacrifices, and with our peace-offerings, and your sons do not say hereafter to our sons, Ye have no portion in Jehovah.
[28] ‘And we say, And it hath been, when they say so unto us, and unto our generations hereafter, that we have said, See the pattern of the altar of Jehovah, which our fathers made-not for burnt-offering nor for sacrifice-but a witness it is between us and you.
[29] ‘Far be it from us to rebel against Jehovah, and to turn back to-day from after Jehovah, to build an altar for burnt-offering, for present, and for sacrifice, apart from the altar of Jehovah our God, which is before His tabernacle.’
[30] And Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the company, and the heads of the thousands of Israel, who are with him, hear the words which the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, and the sons of Manasseh have spoken, and it is good in their eyes.
[31] And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest saith unto the sons of Reuben, and unto the sons of Gad, and unto the sons of Manasseh, ‘To-day we have known that Jehovah is in our midst, because ye have not committed against Jehovah this trespass-then ye have delivered the sons of Israel out of the hand of Jehovah.’
[32] And Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, turn back from the sons of Reuben, and from the sons of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, unto the land of Canaan, unto the sons of Israel, and bring them back word;
[33] and the thing is good in the eyes of the sons of Israel, and the sons of Israel bless God, and have not said to go up against them to war, to destroy the land which the sons of Reuben, and the sons of Gad, are dwelling in.
[34] And the sons of Reuben and the sons of Gad proclaim concerning the altar, that ‘it is a witness between us that Jehovah is God.’
