Then one of the people answered, and said, “Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed is the man who eats food today.’ ” So the people were faint.

And a man of the people answereth and saith, ‘Thy father certainly adjured the people, saying, Cursed is the man who eateth food to-day; and the people are weary.’

How much more, if perhaps the people had eaten freely today of the plunder of their enemies which they found? For now there has been no great slaughter among the Philistines.”

How much more, H637 if haply H3863 the people H5971 had eaten H398 (QalPerf) freely H398 (QalInf) to day H3117 of the spoil H7998 of their enemies H341 (QalActPtc) which they found? H4672 (QalPerf) for had there not been now a much greater H7235 (QalPerf) slaughter H4347 among the Philistines? H6430

How much more if the people had well eaten to-day of the spoil of its enemies which it hath found, for now, the smiting hath not been great among the Philistines.’

The people said to Saul, “Shall Jonathan die, who has worked this great salvation in Israel? Far from it! As Yahweh lives, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground, for he has worked with God today!” So the people rescued Jonathan, so he didn’t die.

And the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 Shall Jonathan H3129 die, H4191 (QalImpf) who hath wrought H6213 (QalPerf) this great H1419 salvation H3444 in Israel? H3478 God forbid: H2486 [as] the Lord H3068 liveth, H2416 there shall not one hair H8185 of his head H7218 fall H5307 (QalImpf) to the ground; H776 for he hath wrought H6213 (QalPerf) with God H430 this day. H3117 So the people H5971 rescued H6299 (QalImpf) Jonathan, H3129 that he died H4191 (QalPerf) not.

And the people say unto Saul, ‘Doth Jonathan die who wrought this great salvation in Israel?-a profanation! Jehovah liveth, if there falleth from the hair of his head to the earth, for with God he hath wrought this day;’ and the people rescue Jonathan, and he hath not died.

Now when Saul had taken the kingdom over Israel, he fought against all his enemies on every side: against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines. Wherever he turned himself, he defeated them.

and Saul captured the kingdom over Israel, and he fighteth round about against all his enemies, against Moab, and against the Bene-Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines, and whithersoever he turneth he doth vex them.

Yahweh of Armies says, ‘I remember what Amalek did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way when he came up out of Egypt.

‘Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, I have looked after that which Amalek did to Israel, that which he laid for him in the way in his going up out of Egypt.

Saul struck the Amalekites, from Havilah as you go to Shur, which is before Egypt.

And Saul H7586 smote H5221 (HiphImpf) the Amalekites H6002 from Havilah H2341 [until] thou comest H935 (QalInf) to Shur, H7793 that [is] over against H6440 Egypt. H4714

And Saul smiteth Amalek from Havilah-thy going in to Shur, which is on the front of Egypt,

Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) What [meaneth] then this bleating H6963 of the sheep H6629 in mine ears, H241 and the lowing H6963 of the oxen H1241 which I hear? H8085 (QalActPtc)

And Samuel saith, ‘And what is the noise of this flock in mine ears-and the noise of the herd which I am hearing?’

Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”

Then Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 Stay, H7503 (HiphImpv) and I will tell H5046 (HiphImpf) thee what the Lord H3068 hath said H1696 (PielPerf) to me this night. H3915 And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Say on. H1696 (PielImpv)

And Samuel saith unto Saul, ‘Desist, and I declare to thee that which Jehovah hath spoken unto me to-night;’ and he saith to him, ‘Speak.’

Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed Yahweh’s voice, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Yea, I have obeyed H8085 (QalPerf) the voice H6963 of the Lord, H3068 and have gone H3212 (QalImpf) the way H1870 which the Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalPerf) me, and have brought H935 (HiphImpf) Agag H90 the king H4428 of Amalek, H6002 and have utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphPerf) the Amalekites. And Saul saith unto Samuel, ‘Because-I have hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, and I go in the way which Jehovah hath sent me, and bring in Agag king of Amalek, and Amalek I have devoted;

Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”

And call H7121 (QalPerf) Jesse H3448 to the sacrifice, H2077 and I will shew H3045 (HiphImpf) thee what thou shalt do: H6213 (QalImpf) and thou shalt anoint H4886 (QalPerf) unto me [him] whom I name H559 (QalImpf) unto thee.

and thou hast called for Jesse in the sacrifice, and I cause thee to know that which thou dost do, and thou hast anointed to Me him of whom I speak unto thee.’

Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

And Samuel doth that which Jehovah hath spoken, and cometh in to Beth-Lehem, and the elders of the city tremble to meet him, and one saith, ‘Is thy coming peace?’

Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.”

Wherefore Saul H7586 sent H7971 (QalImpf) messengers H4397 unto Jesse, H3448 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Send H7971 (QalImpv) me David H1732 thy son, H1121 which [is] with the sheep. H6629

And Saul sendeth messengers unto Jesse, and saith, ‘Send unto me David thy son, who is with the flock.’

Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle; and they were gathered together at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah in Ephesdammim.

Now the Philistines H6430 gathered together H622 (QalImpf) their armies H4264 to battle, H4421 and were gathered together H622 (NiphImpf) at Shochoh, H7755 which [belongeth] to Judah, H3063 and pitched H2583 (QalImpf) between Shochoh H7755 and Azekah, H5825 in Ephesdammim. H658

And the Philistines gather their camps to battle, and are gathered to Shochoh, which is to Judah, and encamp between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephes-Dammim;

The three oldest sons of Jesse had gone after Saul to the battle; and the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

And the three H7969 eldest H1419 sons H1121 of Jesse H3448 went H3212 (QalImpf) [and] followed H310 Saul H7586 to the battle: H4421 and the names H8034 of his three H7969 sons H1121 that went H1980 (QalPerf) to the battle H4421 [were] Eliab H446 the firstborn, H1060 and next H4932 unto him Abinadab, H41 and the third H7992 Shammah. and the three eldest sons of Jesse go, they have gone after Saul to battle; and the name of his three sons who have gone into battle are Eliab the first-born, and his second Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

The men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? He has surely come up to defy Israel. The king will give great riches to the man who kills him, and will give him his daughter, and will make his father’s house tax-free in Israel.”

And the men H376 of Israel H3478 said, H559 (QalImpf) Have ye seen H7200 (QalPerf) this man H376 that is come up? And the men of Israel say, ‘Have ye seen this man who is coming up? for, to reproach Israel he is coming up, and it hath been-the man who smiteth him, the king doth enrich him with great riches, and his daughter he doth give to him, and his father’s house doth make free in Israel.’

David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying, “What shall be done to the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

And David H1732 spake H559 (QalImpf) to the men H582 that stood H5975 (QalActPtc) by him, saying, H559 (QalInf) What shall be done H6213 (NiphImpf) to the man H376 that killeth H5221 (HiphImpf) this H1975 Philistine, H6430 and taketh away H5493 (HiphPerf) the reproach H2781 from Israel? And David speaketh unto the men who are standing by him, saying, ‘What is done to the man who smiteth this Philistine, and hath turned aside reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he hath reproached the ranks of the living God?’

The people answered him in this way, saying, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”

And the people speak to him according to this word, saying, ‘Thus it is done to the man who smiteth him.’

When the words were heard which David spoke, they rehearsed them before Saul; and he sent for him.

And the words which David hath spoken are heard, and they declare before Saul, and he receiveth him;

David said, “Yahweh, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion and out of the paw of the bear, will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine.” Saul said to David, “Go! Yahweh will be with you.”

And David saith, ‘Jehovah, who delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, He doth deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.’ And Saul saith unto David, ‘Go, and Jehovah is with thee.’

He took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag which he had. His sling was in his hand; and he came near to the Philistine.

And he taketh his staff in his hand, and chooseth for him five smooth stones from the brook, and putteth them in the shepherds’ habiliments that he hath, even in the scrip, and his sling is in his hand, and he draweth nigh unto the Philistine.

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin; but I come to you in the name of Yahweh of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) David H1732 to the Philistine, H6430 Thou comest H935 (QalActPtc) to me with a sword, H2719 and with a spear, H2595 and with a shield: H3591 but I come H935 (QalActPtc) to thee in the name H8034 of the Lord H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of the armies H4634 of Israel, H3478 whom thou hast defied. And David saith unto the Philistine, ‘Thou art coming unto me with sword, and with spear, and with buckler, and I am coming unto thee in the name of Jehovah of Hosts, God of the ranks of Israel, which thou hast reproached.

David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

And David H1732 went out H3318 (QalImpf) whithersoever Saul H7586 sent H7971 (QalImpf) him, [and] behaved himself wisely: H7919 (HiphImpf) and Saul H7586 set H7760 (QalImpf) him over the men H582 of war, H4421 and he was accepted H3190 (QalImpf) in the sight H5869 of all the people, H5971 and also in the sight H5869 of Saul’s H7586 servants. And David goeth out whithersoever Saul doth send him; he acted wisely, and Saul setteth him over the men of war, and it is good in the eyes of all the people, and also in the eyes of the servants of Saul.

I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will talk with my father about you; and if I see anything, I will tell you.”

And I will go out H3318 (QalImpf) and stand H5975 (QalPerf) beside H3027 my father H1 in the field H7704 where thou [art], and I will commune H1696 (PielImpf) with my father H1 of thee; and what H4100 I see, H7200 (QalPerf) that I will tell H5046 (HiphPerf) thee.

and I-I go out, and have stood by the side of my father in the field where thou art, and I speak of thee unto my father, and have seen what is coming, and have declared to thee.’

When you have stayed three days, go down quickly and come to the place where you hid yourself when this started, and remain by the stone Ezel.

And [when] thou hast stayed three days, H8027 (PielPerf) [then] thou shalt go down H3381 (QalImpf) quickly, H3966 and come H935 (QalPerf) to the place H4725 where thou didst hide H5641 (NiphPerf) thyself when H3117 the business H4639 was [in hand], and shalt remain H3427 (QalPerf) by H681 the stone H68 Ezel. H237

and on the third day thou dost certainly come down, and hast come in unto the place where thou wast hidden in the day of the work, and hast remained near the stone Ezel.

Concerning the matter which you and I have spoken of, behold, Yahweh is between you and me forever.”

And [as touching] the matter H1697 which thou and I have spoken H1696 (PielPerf) of, behold, the Lord H3068 [be] between thee and me for H5704 ever. H5769

as to the thing which we have spoken, I and thou, lo, Jehovah is between me and thee-unto the age.’

He said to his boy, “Run, find now the arrows which I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto his lad, H5288 Run, H7323 (QalImpv) find out H4672 (QalImpv) now the arrows H2671 which I shoot. H3384 (HiphPtc) [And] as the lad H5288 ran, H7323 (QalPtc) he shot H3384 (QalPerf) an arrow H2678 beyond H5674 (HiphInf) him.

And he saith to his youth, ‘Run, find, I pray thee, the arrows which I am shooting;’ the youth is running, and he hath shot the arrow, causing it to pass over him.

When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said, “Isn’t the arrow beyond you?”

And when the lad H5288 was come H935 (QalImpf) to the place H4725 of the arrow H2678 which Jonathan H3083 had shot, H3384 (QalPerf) Jonathan H3083 cried H7121 (QalImpf) after H310 the lad, H5288 and said, H559 (QalImpf) [Is] not the arrow H2678 beyond H1973 thee?

And the youth cometh unto the place of the arrow which Jonathan hath shot, and Jonathan calleth after the youth, and saith, ‘Is not the arrow beyond thee?’

Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, because we have both sworn in Yahweh’s name, saying, ‘Yahweh is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’ ” He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.

and Jonathan saith to David, ‘Go in peace, in that we have sworn-we two-in the name of Jehovah, saying, Jehovah is between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed-unto the age;’ and he riseth and goeth; and Jonathan hath gone in to the city.

David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has commanded me to do something, and has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you. I have sent the young men to a certain place.’

And David H1732 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Ahimelech H288 the priest, H3548 The king H4428 hath commanded H6680 (PielPerf) me a business, H1697 and hath said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Let no man H376 know H3045 (QalImpf) any thing H3972 of the business H1697 whereabout I send H7971 (QalActPtc) thee, and what I have commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee: and I have appointed H3045 (PoalPerf) [my] servants H5288 to such H6423 and such H492 a place. And David saith to Ahimelech the priest, ‘The king hath commanded me a matter, and he saith unto me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I am sending thee, and which I have commanded thee; and the young men I have caused to know at such and such a place;

The priest said, “Behold, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you would like to take that, take it, for there is no other except that here.” David said, “There is none like that. Give it to me.”

And the priest H3548 said, H559 (QalImpf) The sword H2719 of Goliath H1555 the Philistine, H6430 whom thou slewest H5221 (HiphPerf) in the valley H6010 of Elah, H425 behold, it [is here] wrapped H3874 (QalPasPtc) in a cloth H8071 behind H310 the ephod: H646 if thou wilt take H3947 (QalImpf) that, take H3947 (QalImpv) [it]: for [there is] no other H312 save H2108 that here. And the priest saith, ‘The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou didst smite in the valley of Elah, lo, it is wrapped in a garment behind the ephod, if it thou dost take to thyself, take; for there is none other save it in this place.’ And David saith, ‘There is none like it-give it to me.’

Everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them. There were with him about four hundred men.

and gather themselves unto him do every man in distress, and every man who hath an exactor, and every man bitter in soul, and he is over them for head, and there are with him about four hundred men.

David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab; and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come out to you, until I know what God will do for me.”

And David H1732 went H3212 (QalImpf) thence to Mizpeh H4708 of Moab: H4124 and he said H559 (QalImpf) unto the king H4428 of Moab, H4124 Let my father H1 and my mother, H517 I pray thee, come forth, H3318 (QalImpf) [and be] with you, till I know H3045 (QalImpf) what God H430 will do H6213 (QalImpf) for me.

And David goeth thence to Mizpeh of Moab, and saith unto the king of Moab, ‘Let, I pray thee, my father and my mother go out with you, till that I know what God doth for me;’

Saul heard that David was discovered, with the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing around him.

When Saul H7586 heard H8085 (QalImpf) that David H1732 was discovered, H3045 (NiphPerf) and the men H582 that [were] with him, (now Saul H7586 abode H3427 (QalActPtc) in Gibeah H1390 under a tree H815 in Ramah, H7414 having his spear H2595 in his hand, H3027 and all his servants H5650 [were] standing H5324 (NiphPtc) about him;)

And Saul heareth that David hath become known, and the men who are with him, and Saul is abiding in Gibeah, under the grove in Ramah, and his spear is in his hand, and all his servants standing by him.

Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

Then the king H4428 sent H7971 (QalImpf) to call H7121 (QalInf) Ahimelech H288 the priest, H3548 the son H1121 of Ahitub, H285 and all his father’s H1 house, H1004 the priests H3548 that [were] in Nob: H5011 and they came H935 (QalImpf) all of them to the king. H4428

And the king sendeth to call Ahimelech son of Ahitub, the priest, and all the house of his father, the priests, who are in Nob, and they come all of them unto the king;

Stay with me. Don’t be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. You will be safe with me.”

Abide H3427 (QalImpv) thou with me, fear H3372 (QalImpf) not: for he that seeketh H1245 (PielImpf) my life H5315 seeketh H1245 (PielImpf) thy life: H5315 but with me thou [shalt be] in safeguard. H4931

dwell with me; fear not; for he who seeketh my life seeketh thy life; for a charge art thou with me.’

Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah and went wherever they could go. Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah; and he gave up going there.

Then David H1732 and his men, H582 [which were] about six H8337 hundred, H3967 H376 arose H6965 (QalImpf) and departed H3318 (QalImpf) out of Keilah, H7084 and went H1980 (HithImpf) whithersoever H834 they could go. H1980 (HithImpf) And it was told H5046 (HophPerf) Saul H7586 that David H1732 was escaped H4422 (NiphPerf) from Keilah; H7084 and he forbare H2308 (QalImpf) to go forth. H3318 (QalInf)

And David riseth-and his men-about six hundred men, and they go out from Keilah, and go up and down where they go up and down; and to Saul it hath been declared that David hath escaped from Keilah, and he ceaseth to go out.

Then the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, “Doesn’t David hide himself with us in the strongholds in the woods, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desert?

And the Ziphites go up unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, ‘Is not David hiding himself with us in fortresses, in the forest, in the height of Hachilah, which is on the south of the desolate place?

See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself; and come again to me with certainty, and I will go with you. It shall happen, if he is in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.”

David’s men said to him, “Behold, the day of which Yahweh said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, and you shall do to him as it shall seem good to you.’ ” Then David arose and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe secretly.

Afterward, David’s heart struck him because he had cut off Saul’s skirt.

For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away unharmed? Therefore may Yahweh reward you good for that which you have done to me today.

Please don’t let my lord pay attention to this worthless fellow, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. Nabal° is his name, and folly is with him; but I, your servant, didn’t see my lord’s young men whom you sent.

Now this present which your servant has brought to my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.
