The king said again to Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, “What is your petition, queen Esther? It shall be granted you. What is your request? Even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed.”

Then Esther the queen answered, “If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request.

Esther said, “An adversary and an enemy, even this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.”

The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons.

but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

και ως εισηλθεν προς τον βασιλεα λεγων κρεμασαι τον μαρδοχαιον οσα δε επεχειρησεν επαξαι επι τους ιουδαιους κακα επ αυτον εγενοντο και εκρεμασθη αυτος και τα τεκνα αυτου

It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually.

Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.”

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.”

Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

απεκριθη δε ο διαβολος και ειπεν εναντιον του κυριου μη δωρεαν σεβεται ιωβ τον θεον

Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold,^§ all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh.

Job 1:12 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Behold, all that he hath is in thy power;^§ H3027 only upon himself put not forth H7971 (QalImpf) thine hand. H3027 So Satan H7854 went forth H3318 (QalImpf) from the presence H6440 of the Lord. H3068

ετι τουτου λαλουντος ηλθεν ετερος αγγελος και ειπεν προς ιωβ πυρ επεσεν εκ του ουρανου και κατεκαυσεν τα προβατα και τους ποιμενας κατεφαγεν ομοιως και σωθεις εγω μονος ηλθον του απαγγειλαι σοι

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.”

ετι τουτου λαλουντος ηλθεν ετερος αγγελος και ειπεν προς ιωβ οι ιππεις εποιησαν ημιν κεφαλας τρεις και εκυκλωσαν τας καμηλους και ηχμαλωτευσαν αυτας και τους παιδας απεκτειναν εν μαχαιραις εσωθην δε εγω μονος και ηλθον του απαγγειλαι σοι

While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked will I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.”

Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. He still maintains his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Satan, H7854 Hast thou H7760 (QalPerf) considered H3820 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that there is none like him in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 (QalActPtc) evil? H7451 and still he holdeth fast H2388 (HiphPtc) his integrity, H8538 although thou movedst H5496 (HiphImpf) me against him, to destroy H1104 (PielInf) him^§ without cause. H2600

ειπεν δε ο κυριος προς τον διαβολον προσεσχες ουν τω θεραποντι μου ιωβ οτι ουκ εστιν κατ αυτον των επι της γης ανθρωπος ακακος αληθινος αμεμπτος θεοσεβης απεχομενος απο παντος κακου ετι δε εχεται ακακιας συ δε ειπας τα υπαρχοντα αυτου δια κενης απολεσαι

Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Skin for skin. Yes, all that a man has he will give for his life.

And Satan H7854 answered H6030 (QalImpf) the Lord, H3068 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Skin H5785 for skin, H5785 yea, all that a man H376 hath will he give H5414 (QalImpf) for his life. H5315

υπολαβων δε ο διαβολος ειπεν τω κυριω δερμα υπερ δερματος οσα υπαρχει ανθρωπω υπερ της ψυχης αυτου εκτεισει

Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand. Only spare his life.”

Then his wife said to him, “Do you still maintain your integrity? Renounce God, and die.”

But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?” In all this Job didn’t sin with his lips.

και κατηρασατο την ημεραν αυτου λεγων

“Let the day perish in which I was born, the night which said, ‘There is a boy conceived.’

When I lie down, I say, ‘When will I arise, and the night be gone?’ I toss and turn until the dawning of the day.

Job 7:4 Heb. the evening be measured

εαν κοιμηθω λεγω ποτε ημερα ως δ αν αναστω παλιν ποτε εσπερα πληρης δε γινομαι οδυνων απο εσπερας εως πρωι

When I say, ‘My bed will comfort me. My couch will ease my complaint,’

ειπα οτι παρακαλεσει με η κλινη μου ανοισω δε προς εμαυτον ιδια λογον τη κοιτη μου

Shall they not teach you, tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

η ουχ ουτοι σε διδαξουσιν και αναγγελουσιν και εκ καρδιας εξαξουσιν ρηματα

Then Job answered,

υπολαβων δε ιωβ λεγει

He commands the sun and it doesn’t rise, and seals up the stars.

Which commandeth H559 (QalActPtc) the sun, H2775 and it riseth H2224 (QalImpf) not; And sealeth up H2856 (QalImpf) the stars. H3556

ο λεγων τω ηλιω και ουκ ανατελλει κατα δε αστρων κατασφραγιζει

Behold, he snatches away. Who can hinder him? Who will ask him, ‘What are you doing?’

Behold, he taketh away, H2862 (QalImpf) who can hinder H7725 (HiphImpf) him?^§ Who will say H559 (QalImpf) unto him, What doest H6213 (QalImpf) thou?

Job 9:12 Heb. who can turn him away?

εαν απαλλαξη τις αποστρεψει η τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας

“It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

I will tell God, ‘Do not condemn me. Show me why you contend with me.

και ερω προς κυριον μη με ασεβειν διδασκε και δια τι με ουτως εκρινας

Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered,

For you say, ‘My doctrine is pure. I am clean in your eyes.’

μη γαρ λεγε οτι καθαρος ειμι τοις εργοις και αμεμπτος εναντιον αυτου

Then Job answered,

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered,

Then Job answered,
