I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the sky. It is a heavy burden that God^§ has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

Ecclesiastes 1:13 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

And I gave H5414 (QalPerf) my heart H3820 to seek H1875 (QalInf) and search out H8446 (QalInf) by wisdom H2451 concerning all things that are done H6213 (NiphPerf) under heaven: H8064 this sore H7451 travail H6045 hath God H430 given H5414 (QalPerf) to the sons H1121 of man H120 to be exercised H6031 (QalInf) therewith.^§

Ecclesiastes 1:13 Or, to afflict them

και εδωκα την καρδιαν μου του εκζητησαι και του κατασκεψασθαι εν τη σοφια περι παντων των γινομενων υπο τον ουρανον οτι περισπασμον πονηρον εδωκεν ο θεος τοις υιοις του ανθρωπου του περισπασθαι εν αυτω

For all his days are sorrows, and his travail is grief; yes, even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.

For all his days H3117 are sorrows, H4341 and his travail H6045 grief; H3708 yea, his heart H3820 taketh not rest H7901 (QalPerf) in the night. H3915 This is also vanity. H1892

οτι πασαι αι ημεραι αυτου αλγηματων και θυμου περισπασμος αυτου και γε εν νυκτι ου κοιμαται η καρδια αυτου και γε τουτο ματαιοτης εστιν

For to the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he gives travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind.

For God giveth H5414 (QalPerf) to a man H120 that is good H2896 in his sight^§ H6440 wisdom, H2451 and knowledge, H1847 and joy: H8057 but to the sinner H2398 (QalActPtc) he giveth H5414 (QalPerf) travail, H6045 to gather H622 (QalInf) and to heap up, H3664 (QalInf) that he may give H5414 (QalInf) to him that is good H2896 before H6440 God. Ecclesiastes 2:26 Heb. before him

οτι τω ανθρωπω τω αγαθω προ προσωπου αυτου εδωκεν σοφιαν και γνωσιν και ευφροσυνην και τω αμαρτανοντι εδωκεν περισπασμον του προσθειναι και του συναγαγειν του δουναι τω αγαθω προ προσωπου του θεου οτι και γε τουτο ματαιοτης και προαιρεσις πνευματος

I have seen the burden which God has given to the sons of men to be afflicted with.

I have seen H7200 (QalPerf) the travail, H6045 which God H430 hath given H5414 (QalPerf) to the sons H1121 of men H120 to be exercised H6031 (QalInf) in it.

ειδον συν τον περισπασμον ον εδωκεν ο θεος τοις υιοις του ανθρωπου του περισπασθαι εν αυτω

There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then do I labor and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business.

There is H3426 one H259 alone, and there is not a second; H8145 yea, he hath neither child H1121 nor brother: H251 yet is there no end H7093 of all his labour; H5999 neither is his eye H5869 satisfied H7646 (QalImpf) with riches; H6239 neither saith he, For whom do I labour, H6001 and bereave H2637 (PielPtc) my soul H5315 of good? εστιν εις και ουκ εστιν δευτερος και γε υιος και αδελφος ουκ εστιν αυτω και ουκ εστιν περασμος τω παντι μοχθω αυτου και γε οφθαλμος αυτου ουκ εμπιπλαται πλουτου και τινι εγω μοχθω και στερισκω την ψυχην μου απο αγαθωσυνης και γε τουτο ματαιοτης και περισπασμος πονηρος εστιν

For as a dream comes with a multitude of cares, so a fool’s speech with a multitude of words.

Those riches perish by misfortune, and if he has fathered a son, there is nothing in his hand.

But those riches H6239 perish H6 (QalPerf) by evil H7451 travail: H6045 and he begetteth H3205 (HiphPerf) a son, H1121 and there is nothing H3972 in his hand. H3027

When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done on the earth (even though eyes see no sleep day or night),

When I applied H5414 (QalPerf) mine heart H3820 to know H3045 (QalInf) wisdom, H2451 and to see H7200 (QalInf) the business H6045 that is done H6213 (NiphPerf) upon the earth: H776 (for also there is that neither day H3117 nor night H3915 seeth H7200 (QalActPtc) sleep H8142 with his eyes:) H5869
