Then Joseph went in and told Pharaoh, and said, “My father and my brothers, with their flocks, their herds, and all that they own, have come out of the land of Canaan; and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.”

From among his brothers he took five men, and presented them to Pharaoh.

Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?” They said to Pharaoh, “Your servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.”

They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live as foreigners in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks. For the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now therefore, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.”

Pharaoh spoke to Joseph, saying, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.

Joseph brought in Jacob, his father, and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

So Joseph bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh, for every man of the Egyptians sold his field, because the famine was severe on them, and the land became Pharaoh’s.

Only he didn’t buy the land of the priests, for the priests had a portion from Pharaoh, and ate their portion which Pharaoh gave them. That is why they didn’t sell their land.

They said, “You have saved our lives! Let us find favor in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”

Joseph made it a statute concerning the land of Egypt to this day, that Pharaoh should have the fifth. Only the land of the priests alone didn’t become Pharaoh’s.

And Joseph H3130 made H7760 (QalImpf) it a law H2706 over the land H127 of Egypt H4714 unto this day, H3117 that Pharaoh H6547 should have the fifth H2569 part; except H7535 the land H127 of the priests^§ H3548 only, which became not Pharaoh’s. H6547

και εθετο αυτοις ιωσηφ εις προσταγμα εως της ημερας ταυτης επι γην αιγυπτου τω φαραω αποπεμπτουν χωρις της γης των ιερεων μονον ουκ ην τω φαραω

When the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to Pharaoh’s staff, saying, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, please speak in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

Pharaoh said, “Go up, and bury your father, just like he made you swear.”

Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with their burdens. They built storage cities for Pharaoh: Pithom and Raamses.

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “You shall cast every son who is born into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”

Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along by the riverside. She saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her servant to get it.

κατεβη δε η θυγατηρ φαραω λουσασθαι επι τον ποταμον και αι αβραι αυτης παρεπορευοντο παρα τον ποταμον και ιδουσα την θιβιν εν τω ελει αποστειλασα την αβραν ανειλατο αυτην

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?”

και ειπεν η αδελφη αυτου τη θυγατρι φαραω θελεις καλεσω σοι γυναικα τροφευουσαν εκ των εβραιων και θηλασει σοι το παιδιον

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” The young woman went and called the child’s mother.

And Pharaoh’s H6547 daughter H1323 said H559 (QalImpf) to her, Go. H3212 (QalImpv) And the maid H5959 went H3212 (QalImpf) and called H7121 (QalImpf) the child’s H3206 mother. H517

η δε ειπεν αυτη η θυγατηρ φαραω πορευου ελθουσα δε η νεανις εκαλεσεν την μητερα του παιδιου

Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away, and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” The woman took the child, and nursed it.

And Pharaoh’s H6547 daughter H1323 said H559 (QalImpf) unto her, Take H3212 this child H3206 away, H3212 (HiphImpv) and nurse H3243 (HiphImpv) it for me, and I will give H5414 (QalImpf) thee thy wages. H7939 And the woman H802 took H3947 (QalImpf) the child, H3206 and nursed H5134 (HiphImpf) it.

ειπεν δε προς αυτην η θυγατηρ φαραω διατηρησον μοι το παιδιον τουτο και θηλασον μοι αυτο εγω δε δωσω σοι τον μισθον ελαβεν δε η γυνη το παιδιον και εθηλαζεν αυτο

The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,° and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Exodus 2:10 “Moses” sounds like the Hebrew for “draw out”.

Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.

Come now therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

Yahweh said to Moses, “When you go back into Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go.

You shall tell Pharaoh, ‘Yahweh says, Israel is my son, my firstborn,

Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’ ”

Pharaoh said, “Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don’t know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go.”

και ειπεν φαραω τις εστιν ου εισακουσομαι της φωνης αυτου ωστε εξαποστειλαι τους υιους ισραηλ ουκ οιδα τον κυριον και τον ισραηλ ουκ εξαποστελλω

Pharaoh said, “Behold, the people of the land are now many, and you make them rest from their burdens.”

και ειπεν φαραω ιδου νυν πολυπληθει ο λαος μη ουν καταπαυσωμεν αυτους απο των εργων

The same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people and their officers, saying,

συνεταξεν δε φαραω τοις εργοδιωκταις του λαου και τοις γραμματευσιν λεγων

The taskmasters of the people went out with their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you straw.

And the taskmasters H5065 (QalActPtc) of the people H5971 went out, H3318 (QalImpf) and their officers, H7860 (QalActPtc) and they spake H559 (QalImpf) to the people, H5971 saying, H559 (QalInf) Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) Pharaoh, H6547 I will not give H5414 (QalActPtc) you straw. H8401

κατεσπευδον δε αυτους οι εργοδιωκται και οι γραμματεις και ελεγον προς τον λαον λεγοντες ταδε λεγει φαραω ουκετι διδωμι υμιν αχυρα

The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and were asked, “Why haven’t you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?”

And the officers H7860 (QalActPtc) of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 which Pharaoh’s H6547 taskmasters H5065 (QalActPtc) had set H7760 (QalPerf) over them, were beaten, H5221 (HophImpf) and demanded, H559 (QalInf) Wherefore have ye not fulfilled H3615 (PielPerf) your task H2706 in making brick H3835 (QalInf) both yesterday H8543 and to day, H3117 as heretofore? και εμαστιγωθησαν οι γραμματεις του γενους των υιων ισραηλ οι κατασταθεντες επ αυτους υπο των επιστατων του φαραω λεγοντες δια τι ου συνετελεσατε τας συνταξεις υμων της πλινθειας καθαπερ εχθες και τριτην ημεραν και το της σημερον

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

Then the officers H7860 (QalActPtc) of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 came H935 (QalImpf) and cried H6817 (QalImpf) unto Pharaoh, H6547 saying, H559 (QalInf) Wherefore dealest H6213 (QalImpf) thou thus with thy servants? H5650

εισελθοντες δε οι γραμματεις των υιων ισραηλ κατεβοησαν προς φαραω λεγοντες ινα τι ουτως ποιεις τοις σοις οικεταις

They met Moses and Aaron, who stood along the way, as they came out from Pharaoh.

συνηντησαν δε μωυση και ααρων ερχομενοις εις συναντησιν αυτοις εκπορευομενων αυτων απο φαραω

They said to them, “May Yahweh look at you and judge, because you have made us a stench to be abhorred in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us!”

Exodus 5:21 Heb. to stink

και ειπαν αυτοις ιδοι ο θεος υμας και κριναι οτι εβδελυξατε την οσμην ημων εναντιον φαραω και εναντιον των θεραποντων αυτου δουναι ρομφαιαν εις τας χειρας αυτου αποκτειναι ημας

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people. You have not rescued your people at all!”

Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”

“Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he let the children of Israel go out of his land.”

Moses spoke before Yahweh, saying, “Behold, the children of Israel haven’t listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, when I have uncircumcised lips?”

Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them a command to the children of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

These are those who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring out the children of Israel from Egypt. These are that Moses and Aaron.
