“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.”

αποστειλον σεαυτω ανδρας και κατασκεψασθωσαν την γην των χαναναιων ην εγω διδωμι τοις υιοις ισραηλ εις κατασχεσιν ανδρα ενα κατα φυλην κατα δημους πατριων αυτων αποστελεις αυτους παντα αρχηγον εξ αυτων

‘Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’

κυριος μακροθυμος και πολυελεος και αληθινος αφαιρων ανομιας και αδικιας και αμαρτιας και καθαρισμω ου καθαριει τον ενοχον αποδιδους αμαρτιας πατερων επι τεκνα εως τριτης και τεταρτης

surely they shall not see the land which I swore to their fathers, neither shall any of those who despised me see it.

The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

λαβε την αρχην πασης συναγωγης υιων ισραηλ απο εικοσαετους και επανω κατ οικους πατριων αυτων πας ο εκπορευομενος παραταξασθαι εν ισραηλ

Why should the name of our father be taken away from among his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among the brothers of our father.”

μη εξαλειφθητω το ονομα του πατρος ημων εκ μεσου του δημου αυτου οτι ουκ εστιν αυτω υιος δοτε ημιν κατασχεσιν εν μεσω αδελφων πατρος ημων

“The daughters of Zelophehad speak right. You shall surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father’s brothers. You shall cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them.

ορθως θυγατερες σαλπααδ λελαληκασιν δομα δωσεις αυταις κατασχεσιν κληρονομιας εν μεσω αδελφων πατρος αυτων και περιθησεις τον κληρον του πατρος αυτων αυταις

If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.

If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman who is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. This shall be a statute and ordinance for the children of Israel, as Yahweh commanded Moses.’ ”

“Also, when a woman vows a vow to Yahweh and binds herself by a pledge, being in her father’s house, in her youth,

and her father hears her vow and her pledge with which she has bound her soul, and her father says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand, and every pledge with which she has bound her soul shall stand.

^[30:5] και ακουση ο πατηρ αυτης τας ευχας αυτης και τους ορισμους αυτης ους ωρισατο κατα της ψυχης αυτης και παρασιωπηση αυτης ο πατηρ και στησονται πασαι αι ευχαι αυτης και παντες οι ορισμοι ους ωρισατο κατα της ψυχης αυτης μενουσιν αυτη

But if her father forbids her in the day that he hears, none of her vows or of her pledges with which she has bound her soul, shall stand. Yahweh will forgive her, because her father has forbidden her.

But if her father H1 disallow H5106 (HiphPerf) her in the day H3117 that he heareth; H8085 (QalInf) not any of her vows, H5088 or of her bonds H632 wherewith she hath bound H631 (QalPerf) her soul, H5315 shall stand: H6965 (QalImpf) and the Lord H3068 shall forgive H5545 (QalImpf) her, because her father H1 disallowed H5106 (HiphPerf) her.

These are the statutes which Yahweh commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, between a father and his daughter, being in her youth, in her father’s house.

These [are] the statutes, H2706 which the Lord H3068 commanded H6680 (PielPerf) Moses, H4872 between a man H376 and his wife, H802 between the father H1 and his daughter, H1323 [being yet] in her youth H5271 in her father’s H1 house. H1004

“Behold, you have risen up in your fathers’ place, an increase of sinful men, to increase the fierce anger of Yahweh toward Israel.

ιδου ανεστητε αντι των πατερων υμων συστρεμμα ανθρωπων αμαρτωλων προσθειναι ετι επι τον θυμον της οργης κυριου επι ισραηλ

So Moses commanded concerning them to Eleazar the priest, and to Joshua the son of Nun, and to the heads of the fathers’ households of the tribes of the children of Israel.

και συνεστησεν αυτοις μωυσης ελεαζαρ τον ιερεα και ιησουν υιον ναυη και τους αρχοντας πατριων των φυλων ισραηλ

You shall inherit the land by lot according to your families; to the larger groups you shall give a larger inheritance, and to the smaller you shall give a smaller inheritance. Wherever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his. You shall inherit according to the tribes of your fathers.

οτι ελαβεν φυλη υιων ρουβην και φυλη υιων γαδ κατ οικους πατριων αυτων και το ημισυ φυλης μανασση απελαβον τους κληρους αυτων

The heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the princes, the heads of the fathers’ households of the children of Israel.

και προσηλθον οι αρχοντες φυλης υιων γαλααδ υιου μαχιρ υιου μανασση εκ της φυλης υιων ιωσηφ και ελαλησαν εναντι μωυση και εναντι ελεαζαρ του ιερεως και εναντι των αρχοντων οικων πατριων υιων ισραηλ

If they are married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So it will be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

And if they be married H802 to any H259 of the sons H1121 of the [other] tribes H7626 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 then shall their inheritance H5159 be taken H1639 (NiphPerf) from the inheritance H5159 of our fathers, H1 and shall be put H3254 (NiphPerf) to the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall it be taken H1639 (NiphImpf) from the lot H1486 of our inheritance. και εσονται ενι των φυλων υιων ισραηλ γυναικες και αφαιρεθησεται ο κληρος αυτων εκ της κατασχεσεως των πατερων ημων και προστεθησεται εις κληρονομιαν της φυλης οις αν γενωνται γυναικες και εκ του κληρου της κληρονομιας ημων αφαιρεθησεται

When the jubilee of the children of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall belong. So their inheritance will be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

And when the jubile H3104 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 shall be, then shall their inheritance H5159 be put H3254 (NiphPerf) unto the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 whereunto they are received: so shall their inheritance H5159 be taken away H1639 (NiphImpf) from the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 of our fathers. H1

εαν δε γενηται η αφεσις των υιων ισραηλ και προστεθησεται η κληρονομια αυτων επι την κληρονομιαν της φυλης οις αν γενωνται γυναικες και απο της κληρονομιας φυλης πατριας ημων αφαιρεθησεται η κληρονομια αυτων

This is the thing which Yahweh commands concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them be married to whom they think best, only they shall marry into the family of the tribe of their father.

This [is] the thing H1697 which the Lord H3068 doth command H6680 (PielPerf) concerning the daughters H1323 of Zelophehad, H6765 saying, H559 (QalInf) Let them marry H802 to whom they think H5869 best; H2896 only to the family H4940 of the tribe H4294 of their father H1 shall they marry. H802

τουτο το ρημα ο συνεταξεν κυριος ταις θυγατρασιν σαλπααδ λεγων ου αρεσκει εναντιον αυτων εστωσαν γυναικες πλην εκ του δημου του πατρος αυτων εστωσαν γυναικες

So shall no inheritance of the children of Israel move from tribe to tribe; for the children of Israel shall all keep the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

So shall not the inheritance H5159 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 remove H5437 (NiphImpf) from tribe H4294 to tribe: H4294 for every one H376 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 shall keep H1692 (QalImpf) himself to the inheritance H5159 of the tribe H4294 of his fathers. H1

και ουχι περιστραφησεται κληρονομια τοις υιοις ισραηλ απο φυλης επι φυλην οτι εκαστος εν τη κληρονομια της φυλης της πατριας αυτου προσκολληθησονται οι υιοι ισραηλ

Every daughter who possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may each possess the inheritance of his fathers.

And every daughter, H1323 that possesseth H3423 (QalActPtc) an inheritance H5159 in any tribe H4294 of the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 shall be wife H802 unto one H259 of the family H4940 of the tribe H4294 of her father, H1 that the children H1121 of Israel H3478 may enjoy H3423 (QalImpf) every man H376 the inheritance H5159 of his fathers. H1

και πασα θυγατηρ αγχιστευουσα κληρονομιαν εκ των φυλων υιων ισραηλ ενι των εκ του δημου του πατρος αυτης εσονται γυναικες ινα αγχιστευσωσιν οι υιοι ισραηλ εκαστος την κληρονομιαν την πατρικην αυτου

They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph. Their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father.

εκ του δημου του μανασση υιων ιωσηφ εγενηθησαν γυναικες και εγενετο η κληρονομια αυτων επι την φυλην δημου του πατρος αυτων

Behold,^§ I have set the land before you. Go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your fathers—to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob—to give to them and to their offspring^§ after them.’ ”

Deuteronomy 1:8a “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

ιδετε παραδεδωκα ενωπιον υμων την γην εισπορευθεντες κληρονομησατε την γην ην ωμοσα τοις πατρασιν υμων τω αβρααμ και ισαακ και ιακωβ δουναι αυτοις και τω σπερματι αυτων μετ αυτους

May Yahweh, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he has promised you!

Behold, Yahweh your God has set the land before you. Go up, take possession, as Yahweh the God of your fathers has spoken to you. Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed.”

“Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land which I swore to give to your fathers,

Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances which I teach you, to do them, that you may live and go in and possess the land which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, gives you.

και νυν ισραηλ ακουε των δικαιωματων και των κριματων οσα εγω διδασκω υμας σημερον ποιειν ινα ζητε και πολυπλασιασθητε και εισελθοντες κληρονομησητε την γην ην κυριος ο θεος των πατερων υμων διδωσιν υμιν

For Yahweh your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

οτι θεος οικτιρμων κυριος ο θεος σου ουκ εγκαταλειψει σε ουδε μη εκτριψει σε ουκ επιλησεται την διαθηκην των πατερων σου ην ωμοσεν αυτοις

Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their offspring after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt;

δια το αγαπησαι αυτον τους πατερας σου και εξελεξατο το σπερμα αυτων μετ αυτους υμας και εξηγαγεν σε αυτος εν τη ισχυι αυτου τη μεγαλη εξ αιγυπτου

Yahweh didn’t make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive today.

“Honor your father and your mother, as Yahweh your God commanded you, that your days may be long and that it may go well with you in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

τιμα τον πατερα σου και την μητερα σου ον τροπον ενετειλατο σοι κυριος ο θεος σου ινα ευ σοι γενηται και ινα μακροχρονιος γενη επι της γης ης κυριος ο θεος σου διδωσιν σοι

Hear therefore, Israel, and observe to do it, that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.

It shall be, when Yahweh your God brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities which you didn’t build,

και εσται οταν εισαγαγη σε κυριος ο θεος σου εις την γην ην ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν σου τω αβρααμ και ισαακ και ιακωβ δουναι σοι πολεις μεγαλας και καλας ας ουκ ωκοδομησας

You shall do that which is right and good in Yahweh’s sight, that it may be well with you and that you may go in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to your fathers,

και ποιησεις το αρεστον και το καλον εναντιον κυριου του θεου υμων ινα ευ σοι γενηται και εισελθης και κληρονομησης την γην την αγαθην ην ωμοσεν κυριος τοις πατρασιν υμων

and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore to our fathers.
