Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Paddan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian, to be his wife.

Arise, go to Paddan Aram, to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father. Take a wife from there from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother.

αναστας αποδραθι εις την μεσοποταμιαν εις τον οικον βαθουηλ του πατρος της μητρος σου και λαβε σεαυτω εκειθεν γυναικα εκ των θυγατερων λαβαν του αδελφου της μητρος σου

Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

He said to them, “Do you know Laban, the son of Nahor?” They said, “We know him.”

When Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban, his mother’s brother, and the sheep of Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother’s brother.

When Laban heard the news of Jacob, his sister’s son, he ran to meet Jacob, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. Jacob told Laban all these things.

Genesis 29:13 Heb. hearing

εγενετο δε ως ηκουσεν λαβαν το ονομα ιακωβ του υιου της αδελφης αυτου εδραμεν εις συναντησιν αυτω και περιλαβων αυτον εφιλησεν και εισηγαγεν αυτον εις τον οικον αυτου και διηγησατο τω λαβαν παντας τους λογους τουτους

Laban said to him, “Surely you are my bone and my flesh.” Jacob stayed with him for a month.

Laban said to Jacob, “Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what will your wages be?”

Laban had two daughters. The name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

Laban said, “It is better that I give her to you, than that I should give her to another man. Stay with me.”

Jacob said to Laban, “Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her.”

Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

συνηγαγεν δε λαβαν παντας τους ανδρας του τοπου και εποιησεν γαμον

Laban gave Zilpah his servant to his daughter Leah for a servant.

In the morning, behold, it was Leah! He said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Didn’t I serve with you for Rachel? Why then have you deceived me?”

Laban said, “It is not done so in our place, to give the younger before the firstborn.

Genesis 29:26 Heb. place

Laban gave Bilhah, his servant, to his daughter Rachel to be her servant.

When Rachel had borne Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place, and to my country.

Laban said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, stay here, for I have divined that Yahweh has blessed me for your sake.”

Laban said, “Behold, let it be according to your word.”

He set three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

And he set H7760 (QalImpf) three H7969 days’ H3117 journey H1870 betwixt himself and Jacob: H3290 and Jacob H3290 fed H7462 (QalActPtc) the rest H3498 (NiphPtc) of Laban’s H3837 flocks. H6629

Jacob separated the lambs, and set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the black in Laban’s flock. He put his own droves apart, and didn’t put them into Laban’s flock.

τους δε αμνους διεστειλεν ιακωβ και εστησεν εναντιον των προβατων κριον διαλευκον και παν ποικιλον εν τοις αμνοις και διεχωρισεν εαυτω ποιμνια καθ εαυτον και ουκ εμιξεν αυτα εις τα προβατα λαβαν

but when the flock were feeble, he didn’t put them in. So the feebler were Laban’s, and the stronger Jacob’s.

But when the cattle H6629 were feeble, H5848 (HiphInf) he put them not in: H7760 (QalImpf) so the feebler H5848 (QalPasPtc) were Laban’s, H3837 and the stronger H7194 (QalPasPtc) Jacob’s. H3290

ηνικα δ αν ετεκον τα προβατα ουκ ετιθει εγενετο δε τα ασημα του λαβαν τα δε επισημα του ιακωβ

Jacob heard Laban’s sons’ words, saying, “Jacob has taken away all that was our father’s. He has obtained all this wealth from that which was our father’s.”

ηκουσεν δε ιακωβ τα ρηματα των υιων λαβαν λεγοντων ειληφεν ιακωβ παντα τα του πατρος ημων και εκ των του πατρος ημων πεποιηκεν πασαν την δοξαν ταυτην

Jacob saw the expression on Laban’s face, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

And Jacob H3290 beheld H7200 (QalImpf) the countenance H6440 of Laban, H3837 and, behold, it was not toward him as H8543 before.^§ H8032

Genesis 31:2 Heb. as yesterday and the day before

και ειδεν ιακωβ το προσωπον του λαβαν και ιδου ουκ ην προς αυτον ως εχθες και τριτην ημεραν

He said, ‘Now lift up your eyes, and behold, all the male goats which leap on the flock are streaked, speckled, and grizzled, for I have seen all that Laban does to you.

Now Laban had gone to shear his sheep; and Rachel stole the teraphim° that were her father’s.

Genesis 31:19 teraphim were household idols that may have been associated with inheritance rights to the household property.

And Laban H3837 went H1980 (QalPerf) to shear H1494 (QalInf) his sheep: H6629 and Rachel H7354 had stolen H1589 (QalImpf) the images^§ H8655 that were her father’s. H1

Genesis 31:19 Heb. teraphim

λαβαν δε ωχετο κειραι τα προβατα αυτου εκλεψεν δε ραχηλ τα ειδωλα του πατρος αυτης

Jacob deceived Laban the Syrian, in that he didn’t tell him that he was running away.

And Jacob H3290 stole away H1589 (QalImpf) unawares H3820 to Laban^§ H3837 the Syrian, H761 in that H5921 he told H5046 (HiphPerf) him not H1097 that he fled. H1272 (QalActPtc)

Genesis 31:20 Heb. the heart of Laban

εκρυψεν δε ιακωβ λαβαν τον συρον του μη αναγγειλαι αυτω οτι αποδιδρασκει

Laban was told on the third day that Jacob had fled.

ανηγγελη δε λαβαν τω συρω τη τριτη ημερα οτι απεδρα ιακωβ

God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream of the night, and said to him, “Be careful that you don’t speak to Jacob either good or bad.”

Genesis 31:24 Heb. from good to bad

ηλθεν δε ο θεος προς λαβαν τον συρον καθ υπνον την νυκτα και ειπεν αυτω φυλαξαι σεαυτον μηποτε λαλησης μετα ιακωβ πονηρα

Laban caught up with Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountain, and Laban with his relatives encamped in the mountain of Gilead.

Jacob answered Laban, “Because I was afraid, for I said, ‘Lest you should take your daughters from me by force.’

And Jacob H3290 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said H559 (QalImpf) to Laban, H3837 Because I was afraid: H3372 (QalPerf) for I said, H559 (QalPerf) Peradventure H6435 thou wouldest take by force H1497 (QalImpf) thy daughters H1323 from me.

Laban went into Jacob’s tent, into Leah’s tent, and into the tent of the two female servants; but he didn’t find them. He went out of Leah’s tent, and entered into Rachel’s tent.

And Laban H3837 went H935 (QalImpf) into Jacob’s H3290 tent, H168 and into Leah’s H3812 tent, H168 and into the two H8147 maidservants’ H519 tents; H168 but he found H4672 (QalPerf) them not. εισελθων δε λαβαν ηρευνησεν εις τον οικον λειας και ουχ ευρεν και εξελθων εκ του οικου λειας ηρευνησεν τον οικον ιακωβ και εν τω οικω των δυο παιδισκων και ουχ ευρεν εισηλθεν δε και εις τον οικον ραχηλ

Now Rachel had taken the teraphim, put them in the camel’s saddle, and sat on them. Laban felt around all the tent, but didn’t find them.

Now Rachel H7354 had taken H3947 (QalPerf) the images, H8655 and put H7760 (QalImpf) them in the camel’s H1581 furniture, H3733 and sat H3427 (QalImpf) upon them. And Laban H3837 searched^§ H4959 (PielImpf) all the tent, H168 but found H4672 (QalPerf) them not.

Genesis 31:34 Heb. felt

ραχηλ δε ελαβεν τα ειδωλα και ενεβαλεν αυτα εις τα σαγματα της καμηλου και επεκαθισεν αυτοις

Jacob was angry, and argued with Laban. Jacob answered Laban, “What is my trespass? What is my sin, that you have hotly pursued me?

ωργισθη δε ιακωβ και εμαχεσατο τω λαβαν αποκριθεις δε ιακωβ ειπεν τω λαβαν τι το αδικημα μου και τι το αμαρτημα μου οτι κατεδιωξας οπισω μου

Laban answered Jacob, “The daughters are my daughters, the children are my children, the flocks are my flocks, and all that you see is mine! What can I do today to these my daughters, or to their children whom they have borne?

And Laban H3837 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jacob, H3290 These daughters H1323 are my daughters, H1323 and these children H1121 are my children, H1121 and these cattle H6629 are my cattle, H6629 and all that thou seest H7200 (QalActPtc) is mine: and what can I do H6213 (QalImpf) this day H3117 unto these my daughters, H1323 or H176 unto their children H1121 which they have born? αποκριθεις δε λαβαν ειπεν τω ιακωβ αι θυγατερες θυγατερες μου και οι υιοι υιοι μου και τα κτηνη κτηνη μου και παντα οσα συ ορας εμα εστιν και των θυγατερων μου τι ποιησω ταυταις σημερον η τοις τεκνοις αυτων οις ετεκον

Laban called it Jegar Sahadutha,° but Jacob called it Galeed.°

Genesis 31:47a “Jegar Sahadutha” means “Witness Heap” in Aramaic.
Genesis 31:47b “Galeed” means “Witness Heap” in Hebrew.

And Laban H3837 called H7121 (QalImpf) it Jegar-sahadutha:° H3026 but Jacob H3290 called H7121 (QalPerf) it Galeed. H1567

Genesis 31:47 that is, The heap of witness

και εκαλεσεν αυτον λαβαν βουνος της μαρτυριας ιακωβ δε εκαλεσεν αυτον βουνος μαρτυς

Laban said, “This heap is witness between me and you today.” Therefore it was named Galeed

And Laban H3837 said, H559 (QalImpf) This heap H1530 is a witness H5707 between me and thee this day. H3117 Therefore was the name H8034 of it called H7121 (QalPerf) Galeed; H1567

Laban said to Jacob, “See this heap, and see the pillar, which I have set between me and you.

Early in the morning, Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them. Laban departed and returned to his place.
