The Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the South in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.

“Rise up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of the Arnon. Behold, I have given into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

νυν ουν αναστητε και απαρατε και παρελθατε υμεις την φαραγγα αρνων ιδου παραδεδωκα εις τας χειρας σου τον σηων βασιλεα εσεβων τον αμορραιον και την γην αυτου εναρχου κληρονομειν συναπτε προς αυτον πολεμον

I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as it is today.

But Sihon H5511 king H4428 of Heshbon H2809 would H14 (QalPerf) not let us pass H5674 (HiphInf) by him: for the Lord H3068 thy God H430 hardened H7185 (HiphPerf) his spirit, H7307 and made his heart H3824 obstinate, H553 (PielPerf) that he might deliver H5414 (QalInf) him into thy hand, H3027 as [appeareth] this day. και ουκ ηθελησεν σηων βασιλευς εσεβων παρελθειν ημας δι αυτου οτι εσκληρυνεν κυριος ο θεος ημων το πνευμα αυτου και κατισχυσεν την καρδιαν αυτου ινα παραδοθη εις τας χειρας σου ως εν τη ημερα ταυτη

Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan. Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

Yahweh said to me, “Don’t fear him; for I have delivered him, with all his people and his land, into your hand. You shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.”

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Fear H3372 (QalImpf) him not: for I will deliver H5414 (QalPerf) him, and all his people, H5971 and his land, H776 into thy hand; H3027 and thou shalt do H6213 (QalPerf) unto him as thou didst H6213 (QalPerf) unto Sihon H5511 king H4428 of the Amorites, H567 which dwelt H3427 (QalActPtc) at Heshbon. So Yahweh our God also delivered into our hand Og, the king of Bashan, and all his people. We struck him until no one was left to him remaining.

but because Yahweh loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, Yahweh has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

αλλα παρα το αγαπαν κυριον υμας και διατηρων τον ορκον ον ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων εξηγαγεν κυριος υμας εν χειρι κραταια και εν βραχιονι υψηλω και ελυτρωσατο εξ οικου δουλειας εκ χειρος φαραω βασιλεως αιγυπτου

He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under the sky. No one will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them.

When you have come to the land which Yahweh your God gives you, and possess it and dwell in it, and say, “I will set a king over me, like all the nations that are around me,”

you shall surely set him whom Yahweh your God chooses as king over yourselves. You shall set as king over you one from among your brothers. You may not put a foreigner over you, who is not your brother.

Thou shalt in any wise H7760 (QalInf) set H7760 (QalImpf) [him] king H4428 over thee, whom the Lord H3068 thy God H430 shall choose: H977 (QalImpf) [one] from among H7130 thy brethren H251 shalt thou set H7760 (QalImpf) king H4428 over thee: thou mayest H3201 (QalImpf) not set H5414 (QalInf) a stranger H5237 H376 over thee, which [is] not thy brother. H251

καθιστων καταστησεις επι σεαυτον αρχοντα ον αν εκλεξηται κυριος ο θεος σου αυτον εκ των αδελφων σου καταστησεις επι σεαυτον αρχοντα ου δυνηση καταστησαι επι σεαυτον ανθρωπον αλλοτριον οτι ουκ αδελφος σου εστιν

Yahweh will bring you, and your king whom you will set over yourselves, to a nation that you have not known, you nor your fathers. There you will serve other gods of wood and stone.

The Lord H3068 shall bring H3212 (HiphImpf) thee, and thy king H4428 which thou shalt set H6965 (HiphImpf) over thee, unto a nation H1471 which neither thou nor thy fathers H1 have known; H3045 (QalPerf) and there shalt thou serve H5647 (QalPerf) other H312 gods, H430 wood H6086 and stone. H68

απαγαγοι κυριος σε και τους αρχοντας σου ους εαν καταστησης επι σεαυτον εις εθνος ο ουκ επιστασαι συ και οι πατερες σου και λατρευσεις εκει θεοις ετεροις ξυλοις και λιθοις

When you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon and Og the king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we struck them.

And when ye came H935 (QalImpf) unto this place, H4725 Sihon H5511 the king H4428 of Heshbon, H2809 and Og H5747 the king H4428 of Bashan, H1316 came out H3318 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) us unto battle, H4421 and we smote H5221 (HiphImpf) them:

^[29:6] και ηλθετε εως του τοπου τουτου και εξηλθεν σηων βασιλευς εσεβων και ωγ βασιλευς της βασαν εις συναντησιν ημιν εν πολεμω και επαταξαμεν αυτους

Yahweh will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them.

And the Lord H3068 shall do H6213 (QalPerf) unto them as he did H6213 (QalPerf) to Sihon H5511 and to Og, H5747 kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 and unto the land H776 of them, whom he destroyed. H8045 (HiphPerf)

He was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together.

The king of Jericho was told, “Behold,^§ men of the children of Israel came in here tonight to spy out the land.”

Joshua 2:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

Jericho’s king sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who have entered into your house; for they have come to spy out all the land.”

For we have heard how Yahweh dried up the water of the Red Sea before you, when you came out of Egypt; and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and to Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

ακηκοαμεν γαρ οτι κατεξηρανεν κυριος ο θεος την ερυθραν θαλασσαν απο προσωπου υμων οτε εξεπορευεσθε εκ γης αιγυπτου και οσα εποιησεν τοις δυσι βασιλευσιν των αμορραιων οι ησαν περαν του ιορδανου τω σηων και ωγ ους εξωλεθρευσατε αυτους

When all the kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, who were by the sea, heard how Yahweh had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel until we had crossed over, their heart melted, and there was no more spirit in them, because of the children of Israel.

And it came to pass, when all the kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 which [were] on the side H5676 of Jordan H3383 westward, H3220 and all the kings H4428 of the Canaanites, H3669 which [were] by the sea, H3220 heard H8085 (QalInf) that the Lord H3068 had dried up H3001 (HiphPerf) the waters H4325 of Jordan H3383 from before H6440 the children H1121 of Israel, H3478 until we were passed over, H5674 (QalInf) that their heart H3824 melted, H4549 (NiphImpf) neither was there spirit H7307 in them any more, because H6440 of the children H1121 of Israel. και εγενετο ως ηκουσαν οι βασιλεις των αμορραιων οι ησαν περαν του ιορδανου και οι βασιλεις της φοινικης οι παρα την θαλασσαν οτι απεξηρανεν κυριος ο θεος τον ιορδανην ποταμον εκ των εμπροσθεν των υιων ισραηλ εν τω διαβαινειν αυτους και ετακησαν αυτων αι διανοιαι και κατεπλαγησαν και ουκ ην εν αυτοις φρονησις ουδεμια απο προσωπου των υιων ισραηλ

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor.

And the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Joshua, H3091 See, H7200 (QalImpv) I have given H5414 (QalPerf) into thine hand H3027 Jericho, H3405 and the king H4428 thereof, [and] the mighty men H1368 of valour. H2428

και ειπεν κυριος προς ιησουν ιδου εγω παραδιδωμι υποχειριον σου την ιεριχω και τον βασιλεα αυτης τον εν αυτη δυνατους οντας εν ισχυι

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid, and don’t be dismayed. Take all the warriors with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

και ειπεν κυριος προς ιησουν μη φοβηθης μηδε δειλιασης λαβε μετα σου τους ανδρας παντας τους πολεμιστας και αναστας αναβηθι εις γαι ιδου δεδωκα εις τας χειρας σου τον βασιλεα γαι και την γην αυτου

You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except you shall take its goods and its livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it.”

And it came to pass, when the king H4428 of Ai H5857 saw H7200 (QalInf) [it], that they hasted H4116 (PielImpf) and rose up early, H7925 (HiphImpf) and the men H582 of the city H5892 went out H3318 (QalImpf) against H7125 (QalInf) Israel H3478 to battle, H4421 he and all his people, H5971 at a time appointed, H4150 before H6440 the plain; H6160 but he wist H3045 (QalPerf) not that [there were] liers in ambush H693 (QalActPtc) against him behind H310 the city. H5892

και εγενετο ως ειδεν βασιλευς γαι εσπευσεν και εξηλθεν εις συναντησιν αυτοις επ ευθειας εις τον πολεμον αυτος και πας ο λαος ο μετ αυτου και αυτος ουκ ηδει οτι ενεδρα αυτω εστιν οπισω της πολεως

They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan, who was at Ashtaroth.

Now when Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them,

Therefore Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem sent to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,

Therefore the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered themselves together and went up, they and all their armies, and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.

Therefore the five H2568 kings H4428 of the Amorites, H567 the king H4428 of Jerusalem, H3389 the king H4428 of Hebron, H2275 the king H4428 of Jarmuth, H3412 the king H4428 of Lachish, H3923 the king H4428 of Eglon, H5700 gathered themselves together, H622 (NiphImpf) and went up, H5927 (QalImpf) they and all their hosts, H4264 and encamped H2583 (QalImpf) before Gibeon, H1391 and made war H3898 (NiphImpf) against it.

και ανεβησαν οι πεντε βασιλεις των ιεβουσαιων βασιλευς ιερουσαλημ και βασιλευς χεβρων και βασιλευς ιεριμουθ και βασιλευς λαχις και βασιλευς οδολλαμ αυτοι και πας ο λαος αυτων και περιεκαθισαν την γαβαων και εξεπολιορκουν αυτην

The men of Gibeon sent to Joshua at the camp at Gilgal, saying, “Don’t abandon your servants! Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us; for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the hill country have gathered together against us.”

και απεστειλαν οι κατοικουντες γαβαων προς ιησουν εις την παρεμβολην ισραηλ εις γαλγαλα λεγοντες μη εκλυσης τας χειρας σου απο των παιδων σου αναβηθι προς ημας το ταχος και εξελου ημας και βοηθησον ημιν οτι συνηγμενοι εισιν εφ ημας παντες οι βασιλεις των αμορραιων οι κατοικουντες την ορεινην

These five kings fled, and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.

But these five H2568 kings H4428 fled, H5127 (QalImpf) and hid H2244 (NiphImpf) themselves in a cave H4631 at Makkedah. H4719

και εφυγον οι πεντε βασιλεις ουτοι και κατεκρυβησαν εις το σπηλαιον το εν μακηδα

Joshua was told, saying, “The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah.”

Then Joshua said, “Open the cave entrance, and bring those five kings out of the cave to me.”

They did so, and brought those five kings out of the cave to him: the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.

And they did H6213 (QalImpf) so, and brought forth H3318 (HiphImpf) those five H2568 kings H4428 unto him out of the cave, H4631 the king H4428 of Jerusalem, H3389 the king H4428 of Hebron, H2275 the king H4428 of Jarmuth, H3412 the king H4428 of Lachish, H3923 [and] the king H4428 of Eglon. H5700

και εξηγαγοσαν τους πεντε βασιλεις εκ του σπηλαιου τον βασιλεα ιερουσαλημ και τον βασιλεα χεβρων και τον βασιλεα ιεριμουθ και τον βασιλεα λαχις και τον βασιλεα οδολλαμ

When they brought those kings out to Joshua, Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, “Come near. Put your feet on the necks of these kings.” They came near, and put their feet on their necks.

και επει εξηγαγον αυτους προς ιησουν και συνεκαλεσεν ιησους παντα ισραηλ και τους εναρχομενους του πολεμου τους συμπορευομενους αυτω λεγων αυτοις προπορευεσθε και επιθετε τους ποδας υμων επι τους τραχηλους αυτων και προσελθοντες επεθηκαν τους ποδας αυτων επι τους τραχηλους αυτων

Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king. He utterly destroyed it and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining. He did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.

And that day H3117 Joshua H3091 took H3920 (QalPerf) Makkedah, H4719 and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it with the edge H6310 of the sword, H2719 and the king H4428 thereof he utterly destroyed, H2763 (HiphPerf) them, and all the souls H5315 that [were] therein; he let H7604 (HiphPerf) none remain: H8300 and he did H6213 (QalImpf) to the king H4428 of Makkedah H4719 as he did H6213 (QalPerf) unto the king H4428 of Jericho. και την μακηδα ελαβοσαν εν τη ημερα εκεινη και εφονευσαν αυτην εν στοματι ξιφους και εξωλεθρευσαν παν εμπνεον εν αυτη και ου κατελειφθη εν αυτη ουδεις διασεσωσμενος και διαπεφευγως και εποιησαν τω βασιλει μακηδα ον τροπον εποιησαν τω βασιλει ιεριχω

Yahweh delivered it also, with its king, into the hand of Israel. He struck it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining in it. He did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.

και παρεδωκεν αυτην κυριος εις χειρας ισραηλ και ελαβον αυτην και τον βασιλεα αυτης και εφονευσαν αυτην εν στοματι ξιφους και παν εμπνεον εν αυτη και ου κατελειφθη εν αυτη ουδε εις διασεσωσμενος και διαπεφευγως και εποιησαν τω βασιλει αυτης ον τροπον εποιησαν τω βασιλει ιεριχω

Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, until he had left him no one remaining.

τοτε ανεβη αιλαμ βασιλευς γαζερ βοηθησων τη λαχις και επαταξεν αυτον ιησους εν στοματι ξιφους και τον λαον αυτου εως του μη καταλειφθηναι αυτων σεσωσμενον και διαπεφευγοτα

They took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, with its king and all its cities, and all the souls who were in it. He left no one remaining, according to all that he had done to Eglon; but he utterly destroyed it, and all the souls who were in it.

And they took H3920 (QalImpf) it, and smote H5221 (HiphImpf) it with the edge H6310 of the sword, H2719 and the king H4428 thereof, and all the cities H5892 thereof, and all the souls H5315 that [were] therein; he left H7604 (HiphPerf) none remaining, H8300 according to all that he had done H6213 (QalPerf) to Eglon; H5700 but destroyed H2763 (HiphImpf) it utterly, and all the souls H5315 that [were] therein.
