Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.”

και ειπεν ο οικειος αυτου προς αυτον και προς το παιδαριον αυτου που επορευθητε και ειπαν ζητειν τας ονους και ειδαμεν οτι ουκ εισιν και εισηλθομεν προς σαμουηλ

Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.”

And Saul’s H7586 uncle H1730 said, H559 (QalImpf) Tell H5046 (HiphImpv) me, I pray thee, what Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalPerf) unto you.

και ειπεν ο οικειος προς σαουλ απαγγειλον δη μοι τι ειπεν σοι σαμουηλ

Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto his uncle, H1730 He told H5046 (HiphPerf) us plainly H5046 (HiphInf) that the asses H860 were found. H4672 (NiphPerf) But of the matter H1697 of the kingdom, H4410 whereof Samuel H8050 spake, H559 (QalPerf) he told H5046 (HiphPerf) him not.

και ειπεν σαουλ προς τον οικειον αυτου απηγγειλεν απαγγελλων μοι οτι ευρηνται αι ονοι το δε ρημα της βασιλειας ουκ απηγγειλεν αυτω

Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah;

And Samuel H8050 called H6817 (HiphImpf) the people H5971 together unto the Lord H3068 to Mizpeh; H4709

και παρηγγειλεν σαμουηλ παντι τω λαω προς κυριον εις μασσηφα

So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.

And when Samuel H8050 had caused all the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 to come near, H7126 (HiphImpf) the tribe H7626 of Benjamin H1144 was taken. H3920 (NiphImpf)

και προσηγαγεν σαμουηλ παντα τα σκηπτρα ισραηλ και κατακληρουται σκηπτρον βενιαμιν

Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!”

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) to all the people, H5971 See H7200 (QalPerf) ye him whom the Lord H3068 hath chosen, H977 (QalPerf) that [there is] none like him among all the people? H5971 And all the people H5971 shouted, H7321 (HiphImpf) and said, H559 (QalImpf) God save H2421 (QalImpf) the king. H4428

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς παντα τον λαον ει εορακατε ον εκλελεκται εαυτω κυριος οτι ουκ εστιν αυτω ομοιος εν πασιν υμιν και εγνωσαν πας ο λαος και ειπαν ζητω ο βασιλευς

Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Then Samuel H8050 told H1696 (PielImpf) the people H5971 the manner H4941 of the kingdom, H4410 and wrote H3789 (QalImpf) [it] in a book, H5612 and laid [it] up H3240 (HiphImpf) before H6440 the Lord. και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον το δικαιωμα του βασιλεως και εγραψεν εν βιβλιω και εθηκεν ενωπιον κυριου και εξαπεστειλεν σαμουηλ παντα τον λαον και απηλθεν εκαστος εις τον τοπον αυτου

He took a yoke of oxen and cut them in pieces, then sent them throughout all the borders of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, “Whoever doesn’t come out after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” The dread of Yahweh fell on the people, and they came out as one man.

And he took H3947 (QalImpf) a yoke H6776 of oxen, H1241 and hewed them in pieces, H5408 (PielImpf) and sent H7971 (PielImpf) [them] throughout all the coasts H1366 of Israel H3478 by the hands H3027 of messengers, H4397 saying, H559 (QalInf) Whosoever cometh not forth H3318 (QalActPtc) after H310 Saul H7586 and after H310 Samuel, H8050 so shall it be done H6213 (NiphImpf) unto his oxen. και ελαβεν δυο βοας και εμελισεν αυτας και απεστειλεν εις παν οριον ισραηλ εν χειρι αγγελων λεγων ος ουκ εστιν εκπορευομενος οπισω σαουλ και οπισω σαμουηλ κατα ταδε ποιησουσιν τοις βουσιν αυτου και επηλθεν εκστασις κυριου επι τον λαον ισραηλ και εβοησαν ως ανηρ εις

The people said to Samuel, “Who is he who said, ‘Shall Saul reign over us?’ Bring those men, that we may put them to death!”

And the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Who [is] he that said, H559 (QalActPtc) Shall Saul H7586 reign H4427 (QalImpf) over us? bring H5414 (QalImpv) the men, H582 that we may put them to death. H4191 (HiphImpf)

και ειπεν ο λαος προς σαμουηλ τις ο ειπας οτι σαουλ ου βασιλευσει ημων παραδος τους ανδρας και θανατωσομεν αυτους

Then Samuel said to the people, “Come! Let’s go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Samuel H8050 to the people, H5971 Come, H3212 (QalImpv) and let us go H3212 (QalImpf) to Gilgal, H1537 and renew H2318 (PielImpf) the kingdom H4410 there.

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον λεγων πορευθωμεν εις γαλγαλα και εγκαινισωμεν εκει την βασιλειαν

Samuel said to all Israel, “Behold, I have listened to your voice in all that you said to me, and have made a king over you.

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς παντα ανδρα ισραηλ ιδου ηκουσα φωνης υμων εις παντα οσα ειπατε μοι και εβασιλευσα εφ υμας βασιλεα

Samuel said to the people, “It is Yahweh who appointed Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the people, H5971 [It is] the Lord H3068 that advanced H6213 (QalPerf) Moses H4872 and Aaron, H175 and that brought H5927 your fathers H1 up H5927 (HiphPerf) out of the land H776 of Egypt. H4714

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον λεγων μαρτυς κυριος ο ποιησας τον μωυσην και τον ααρων ο αναγαγων τους πατερας ημων εξ αιγυπτου

Yahweh sent Jerubbaal, Bedan, Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side; and you lived in safety.

And the Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalImpf) Jerubbaal, H3378 and Bedan, H917 and Jephthah, H3316 and Samuel, H8050 and delivered H5337 (HiphImpf) you out of the hand H3027 of your enemies H341 (QalActPtc) on every side, H5439 and ye dwelled H3427 (QalImpf) safe. H983

και απεστειλεν κυριος τον ιεροβααλ και τον βαρακ και τον ιεφθαε και τον σαμουηλ και εξειλατο υμας εκ χειρος εχθρων υμων των κυκλοθεν και κατωκειτε πεποιθοτες

So Samuel called to Yahweh, and Yahweh sent thunder and rain that day. Then all the people greatly feared Yahweh and Samuel.

So Samuel H8050 called H7121 (QalImpf) unto the Lord; H3068 and the Lord H3068 sent H5414 (QalImpf) thunder H6963 and rain H4306 that day: H3117 and all the people H5971 greatly H3966 feared H3372 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 and Samuel. H8050

και επεκαλεσατο σαμουηλ τον κυριον και εδωκεν κυριος φωνας και υετον εν τη ημερα εκεινη και εφοβηθησαν πας ο λαος τον κυριον σφοδρα και τον σαμουηλ

All the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.”

And all the people H5971 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Pray H6419 (HithImpv) for thy servants H5650 unto the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 that we die H4191 (QalImpf) not: for we have added H3254 (QalPerf) unto all our sins H2403 [this] evil, H7451 to ask H7592 (QalInf) us a king. H4428

και ειπαν πας ο λαος προς σαμουηλ προσευξαι υπερ των δουλων σου προς κυριον θεον σου και ου μη αποθανωμεν οτι προστεθεικαμεν προς πασας τας αμαρτιας ημων κακιαν αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

Samuel said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. You have indeed done all this evil; yet don’t turn away from following Yahweh, but serve Yahweh with all your heart.

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto the people, H5971 Fear H3372 (QalImpf) not: ye have done H6213 (QalPerf) all this wickedness: H7451 yet turn not aside H5493 (QalImpf) from following H310 the Lord, H3068 but serve H5647 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 with all your heart; H3824

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς τον λαον μη φοβεισθε υμεις πεποιηκατε την πασαν κακιαν ταυτην πλην μη εκκλινητε απο οπισθεν κυριου και δουλευσατε τω κυριω εν ολη καρδια υμων

He stayed seven days, according to the time set by Samuel; but Samuel didn’t come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him.

And he tarried H3176 (HiphImpf) (Qere) H3176 (NiphImpf) seven H7651 days, H3117 according to the set time H4150 that Samuel H8050 [had appointed]: but Samuel H8050 came H935 (QalPerf) not to Gilgal; H1537 and the people H5971 were scattered H6327 (HiphImpf) from him.

και διελιπεν επτα ημερας τω μαρτυριω ως ειπεν σαμουηλ και ου παρεγενετο σαμουηλ εις γαλγαλα και διεσπαρη ο λαος αυτου απ αυτου

It came to pass that as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might greet him.

And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an end H3615 (PielInf) of offering H5927 (HiphInf) the burnt offering, H5930 behold, Samuel H8050 came; H935 (QalActPtc) and Saul H7586 went out H3318 (QalImpf) to meet H7125 (QalInf) him, that he might salute H1288 (QalInf) him.

και εγενετο ως συνετελεσεν αναφερων την ολοκαυτωσιν και σαμουηλ παραγινεται και εξηλθεν σαουλ εις απαντησιν αυτω ευλογησαι αυτον

Samuel said, “What have you done?” Saul said, “Because I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you didn’t come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines assembled themselves together at Michmash,

και ειπεν σαμουηλ τι πεποιηκας και ειπεν σαουλ οτι ειδον ως διεσπαρη ο λαος απ εμου και συ ου παρεγενου ως διεταξω εν τω μαρτυριω των ημερων και οι αλλοφυλοι συνηχθησαν εις μαχεμας

Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you; for now Yahweh would have established your kingdom on Israel forever.

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) to Saul, H7586 Thou hast done foolishly: H5528 (NiphPerf) thou hast not kept H8104 (QalPerf) the commandment H4687 of the Lord H3068 thy God, H430 which he commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee: for now would the Lord H3068 have established H3559 (HiphPerf) thy kingdom H4467 upon Israel H3478 for H5704 ever. H5769

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ μεματαιωται σοι οτι ουκ εφυλαξας την εντολην μου ην ενετειλατο σοι κυριος ως νυν ητοιμασεν κυριος την βασιλειαν σου εως αιωνος επι ισραηλ

Samuel arose, and went from Gilgal to Gibeah of Benjamin. Saul counted the people who were present with him, about six hundred men.

And Samuel H8050 arose, H6965 (QalImpf) and gat him up H5927 (QalImpf) from Gilgal H1537 unto Gibeah H1390 of Benjamin. H1144 And Saul H7586 numbered H6485 (QalImpf) the people H5971 [that were] present H4672 (NiphPtc) with him, about six H8337 hundred H3967 men. H376

και ανεστη σαμουηλ και απηλθεν εκ γαλγαλων εις οδον αυτου και το καταλειμμα του λαου ανεβη οπισω σαουλ εις απαντησιν οπισω του λαου του πολεμιστου αυτων παραγενομενων εκ γαλγαλων εις γαβαα βενιαμιν και επεσκεψατο σαουλ τον λαον τον ευρεθεντα μετ αυτου ως εξακοσιους ανδρας

Samuel said to Saul, “Yahweh sent me to anoint you to be king over his people, over Israel. Now therefore listen to the voice of Yahweh’s words.

Samuel H8050 also said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 The Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalPerf) me to anoint H4886 (QalInf) thee [to be] king H4428 over his people, H5971 over Israel: H3478 now therefore hearken H8085 (QalImpv) thou unto the voice H6963 of the words H1697 of the Lord. H3068

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ εμε απεστειλεν κυριος χρισαι σε εις βασιλεα επι ισραηλ και νυν ακουε της φωνης κυριου

Then Yahweh’s word came to Samuel, saying,

Then came the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 unto Samuel, H8050 saying, H559 (QalInf)

και εγενηθη ρημα κυριου προς σαμουηλ λεγων

“It grieves me that I have set up Saul to be king, for he has turned back from following me, and has not performed my commandments.” Samuel was angry; and he cried to Yahweh all night.

It repenteth H5162 (NiphPerf) me that I have set up H4427 (HiphPerf) Saul H7586 [to be] king: H4428 for he is turned back H7725 (QalPerf) from following H310 me, and hath not performed H6965 (HiphPerf) my commandments. H1697 And it grieved H2734 (QalImpf) Samuel; H8050 and he cried H2199 (QalImpf) unto the Lord H3068 all night. H3915

παρακεκλημαι οτι εβασιλευσα τον σαουλ εις βασιλεα οτι απεστρεψεν απο οπισθεν μου και τους λογους μου ουκ ετηρησεν και ηθυμησεν σαμουηλ και εβοησεν προς κυριον ολην την νυκτα

Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning; and Samuel was told, saying, “Saul came to Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, turned, passed on, and went down to Gilgal.”

And when Samuel H8050 rose early H7925 (HiphImpf) to meet H7125 (QalInf) Saul H7586 in the morning, H1242 it was told H5046 (HophImpf) Samuel, H8050 saying, H559 (QalInf) Saul H7586 came H935 (QalPerf) to Carmel, H3760 and, behold, he set him up H5324 (HiphPtc) a place, H3027 and is gone about, H5437 (NiphImpf) and passed on, H5674 (QalImpf) and gone down H3381 (QalImpf) to Gilgal. H1537

και ωρθρισεν σαμουηλ και επορευθη εις απαντησιν ισραηλ πρωι και απηγγελη τω σαμουηλ λεγοντες ηκει σαουλ εις καρμηλον και ανεστακεν αυτω χειρα και επεστρεψεν το αρμα και κατεβη εις γαλγαλα προς σαουλ και ιδου αυτος ανεφερεν ολοκαυτωσιν τω κυριω τα πρωτα των σκυλων ων ηνεγκεν εξ αμαληκ

Samuel came to Saul; and Saul said to him, “You are blessed by Yahweh! I have performed the commandment of Yahweh.”

And Samuel H8050 came H935 (QalImpf) to Saul: H7586 and Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Blessed H1288 (QalPasPtc) [be] thou of the Lord: H3068 I have performed H6965 (HiphPerf) the commandment H1697 of the Lord. H3068

και παρεγενετο σαμουηλ προς σαουλ και ειπεν αυτω σαουλ ευλογητος συ τω κυριω εστησα παντα οσα ελαλησεν κυριος

Samuel said, “Then what does this bleating of the sheep in my ears and the lowing of the cattle which I hear mean?”

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) What [meaneth] then this bleating H6963 of the sheep H6629 in mine ears, H241 and the lowing H6963 of the oxen H1241 which I hear? H8085 (QalActPtc)

και ειπεν σαμουηλ και τις η φωνη του ποιμνιου τουτου εν τοις ωσιν μου και φωνη των βοων ων εγω ακουω

Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stay, and I will tell you what Yahweh said to me last night.” He said to him, “Say on.”

Then Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 Stay, H7503 (HiphImpv) and I will tell H5046 (HiphImpf) thee what the Lord H3068 hath said H1696 (PielPerf) to me this night. H3915 And he said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Say on. H1696 (PielImpv)

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ ανες και απαγγελω σοι α ελαλησεν κυριος προς με την νυκτα και ειπεν αυτω λαλησον

Samuel said, “Though you were little in your own sight, weren’t you made the head of the tribes of Israel? Yahweh anointed you king over Israel;

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) When thou [wast] little H6996 in thine own sight, H5869 [wast] thou not [made] the head H7218 of the tribes H7626 of Israel, H3478 and the Lord H3068 anointed H4886 (QalImpf) thee king H4428 over Israel? H3478

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ ουχι μικρος συ ει ενωπιον αυτου ηγουμενος σκηπτρου φυλης ισραηλ και εχρισεν σε κυριος εις βασιλεα επι ισραηλ

Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed Yahweh’s voice, and have gone the way which Yahweh sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Yea, I have obeyed H8085 (QalPerf) the voice H6963 of the Lord, H3068 and have gone H3212 (QalImpf) the way H1870 which the Lord H3068 sent H7971 (QalPerf) me, and have brought H935 (HiphImpf) Agag H90 the king H4428 of Amalek, H6002 and have utterly destroyed H2763 (HiphPerf) the Amalekites. H6002

και ειπεν σαουλ προς σαμουηλ δια το ακουσαι με της φωνης του λαου και επορευθην εν τη οδω η απεστειλεν με κυριος και ηγαγον τον αγαγ βασιλεα αμαληκ και τον αμαληκ εξωλεθρευσα

Samuel said, “Has Yahweh as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying Yahweh’s voice? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

And Samuel H8050 said, H559 (QalImpf) Hath the Lord H3068 [as great] delight H2656 in burnt offerings H5930 and sacrifices, H2077 as in obeying H8085 (QalInf) the voice H6963 of the Lord? H3068 Behold, to obey H8085 (QalInf) [is] better H2896 than sacrifice, H2077 [and] to hearken H7181 (HiphInf) than the fat H2459 of rams. H352

και ειπεν σαμουηλ ει θελητον τω κυριω ολοκαυτωματα και θυσιαι ως το ακουσαι φωνης κυριου ιδου ακοη υπερ θυσιαν αγαθη και η επακροασις υπερ στεαρ κριων

Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned; for I have transgressed the commandment of Yahweh and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.

And Saul H7586 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 I have sinned: H2398 (QalPerf) for I have transgressed H5674 (QalPerf) the commandment H6310 of the Lord, H3068 and thy words: H1697 because I feared H3372 (QalPerf) the people, H5971 and obeyed H8085 (QalImpf) their voice. H6963

και ειπεν σαουλ προς σαμουηλ ημαρτηκα οτι παρεβην τον λογον κυριου και το ρημα σου οτι εφοβηθην τον λαον και ηκουσα της φωνης αυτων

Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for you have rejected Yahweh’s word, and Yahweh has rejected you from being king over Israel.”

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Saul, H7586 I will not return H7725 (QalImpf) with thee: for thou hast rejected H3988 (QalPerf) the word H1697 of the Lord, H3068 and the Lord H3068 hath rejected H3988 (QalImpf) thee from being king H4428 over Israel. H3478

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς σαουλ ουκ αναστρεφω μετα σου οτι εξουδενωσας το ρημα κυριου και εξουδενωσει σε κυριος του μη ειναι βασιλεα επι τον ισραηλ

As Samuel turned around to go away, Saul grabbed the skirt of his robe, and it tore.

And as Samuel H8050 turned about H5437 (NiphImpf) to go away, H3212 (QalInf) he laid hold H2388 (HiphImpf) upon the skirt H3671 of his mantle, H4598 and it rent. H7167 (NiphImpf)

και απεστρεψεν σαμουηλ το προσωπον αυτου του απελθειν και εκρατησεν σαουλ του πτερυγιου της διπλοιδος αυτου και διερρηξεν αυτο

Samuel said to him, “Yahweh has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today, and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.

And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, The Lord H3068 hath rent H7167 (QalPerf) the kingdom H4468 of Israel H3478 from thee this day, H3117 and hath given H5414 (QalPerf) it to a neighbour H7453 of thine, [that is] better H2896 than thou.

και ειπεν προς αυτον σαμουηλ διερρηξεν κυριος την βασιλειαν ισραηλ εκ χειρος σου σημερον και δωσει αυτην τω πλησιον σου τω αγαθω υπερ σε

So Samuel went back with Saul; and Saul worshiped Yahweh.

So Samuel H8050 turned again H7725 (QalImpf) after H310 Saul; H7586 and Saul H7586 worshipped H7812 (HithImpf) the Lord. H3068

και ανεστρεψεν σαμουηλ οπισω σαουλ και προσεκυνησεν τω κυριω

Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag the king of the Amalekites here to me!” Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Samuel, H8050 Bring ye hither H5066 (HiphImpv) to me Agag H90 the king H4428 of the Amalekites. H6002 And Agag H90 came H3212 (QalImpf) unto him delicately. H4574 And Agag H90 said, H559 (QalImpf) Surely H403 the bitterness H4751 of death H4194 is past. H5493 (QalPerf)

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προσαγαγετε μοι τον αγαγ βασιλεα αμαληκ και προσηλθεν προς αυτον αγαγ τρεμων και ειπεν αγαγ ει ουτως πικρος ο θανατος

Samuel said, “As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!” Then Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς αγαγ καθοτι ητεκνωσεν γυναικας η ρομφαια σου ουτως ατεκνωθησεται εκ γυναικων η μητηρ σου και εσφαξεν σαμουηλ τον αγαγ ενωπιον κυριου εν γαλγαλ

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

Then Samuel H8050 went H3212 (QalImpf) to Ramah; H7414 and Saul H7586 went up H5927 (QalPerf) to his house H1004 to Gibeah H1390 of Saul. H7586

και απηλθεν σαμουηλ εις αρμαθαιμ και σαουλ ανεβη εις τον οικον αυτου εις γαβαα

Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death, but Samuel mourned for Saul. Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

και ου προσεθετο σαμουηλ ετι ιδειν τον σαουλ εως ημερας θανατου αυτου οτι επενθει σαμουηλ επι σαουλ και κυριος μετεμεληθη οτι εβασιλευσεν τον σαουλ επι ισραηλ

Yahweh said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided a king for myself among his sons.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ εως ποτε συ πενθεις επι σαουλ καγω εξουδενωκα αυτον μη βασιλευειν επι ισραηλ πλησον το κερας σου ελαιου και δευρο αποστειλω σε προς ιεσσαι εως εις βηθλεεμ οτι εορακα εν τοις υιοις αυτου εμοι βασιλευειν

Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” Yahweh said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh.’

και ειπεν σαμουηλ πως πορευθω και ακουσεται σαουλ και αποκτενει με και ειπεν κυριος δαμαλιν βοων λαβε εν τη χειρι σου και ερεις θυσαι τω κυριω ηκω

Samuel did that which Yahweh spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, “Do you come peaceably?”

και εποιησεν σαμουηλ παντα α ελαλησεν αυτω κυριος και ηλθεν εις βηθλεεμ και εξεστησαν οι πρεσβυτεροι της πολεως τη απαντησει αυτου και ειπαν ειρηνη η εισοδος σου ο βλεπων

But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς σαμουηλ μη επιβλεψης επι την οψιν αυτου μηδε εις την εξιν μεγεθους αυτου οτι εξουδενωκα αυτον οτι ουχ ως εμβλεψεται ανθρωπος οψεται ο θεος οτι ανθρωπος οψεται εις προσωπον ο δε θεος οψεται εις καρδιαν

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one, either.”

Then Jesse H3448 called H7121 (QalImpf) Abinadab, H41 and made him pass H5674 (HiphImpf) before H6440 Samuel. H8050 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Neither hath the Lord H3068 chosen H977 (QalPerf) this.

και εκαλεσεν ιεσσαι τον αμιναδαβ και παρηλθεν κατα προσωπον σαμουηλ και ειπεν ουδε τουτον εξελεξατο κυριος

Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, “Yahweh has not chosen these.”

Again, Jesse H3448 made seven H7651 of his sons H1121 to pass H5674 (HiphImpf) before H6440 Samuel. H8050 And Samuel H8050 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jesse, H3448 The Lord H3068 hath not chosen H977 (QalPerf) these.

και παρηγαγεν ιεσσαι τους επτα υιους αυτου ενωπιον σαμουηλ και ειπεν σαμουηλ ουκ εξελεξατο κυριος εν τουτοις

Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your children here?” He said, “There remains yet the youngest. Behold, he is keeping the sheep.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”

και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς ιεσσαι εκλελοιπασιν τα παιδαρια και ειπεν ετι ο μικρος ιδου ποιμαινει εν τω ποιμνιω και ειπεν σαμουηλ προς ιεσσαι αποστειλον και λαβε αυτον οτι ου μη κατακλιθωμεν εως του ελθειν αυτον

Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the middle of his brothers. Then Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

Then Samuel H8050 took H3947 (QalImpf) the horn H7161 of oil, H8081 and anointed H4886 (QalImpf) him in the midst H7130 of his brethren: H251 and the Spirit H7307 of the Lord H3068 came H6743 (QalImpf) upon David H1732 from that day H3117 forward. και ελαβεν σαμουηλ το κερας του ελαιου και εχρισεν αυτον εν μεσω των αδελφων αυτου και εφηλατο πνευμα κυριου επι δαυιδ απο της ημερας εκεινης και επανω και ανεστη σαμουηλ και απηλθεν εις αρμαθαιμ

Now David fled and escaped, and came to Samuel at Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. He and Samuel went and lived in Naioth.

So David H1732 fled, H1272 (QalPerf) and escaped, H4422 (NiphImpf) and came H935 (QalImpf) to Samuel H8050 to Ramah, H7414 and told H5046 (HiphImpf) him all that Saul H7586 had done H6213 (QalPerf) to him. And he and Samuel H8050 went H3212 (QalImpf) and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in Naioth. H5121

και δαυιδ εφυγεν και διεσωθη και παραγινεται προς σαμουηλ εις αρμαθαιμ και απαγγελλει αυτω παντα οσα εποιησεν αυτω σαουλ και επορευθη δαυιδ και σαμουηλ και εκαθισαν εν ναυαθ εν ραμα

Saul sent messengers to seize David; and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as head over them, God’s Spirit came on Saul’s messengers, and they also prophesied.

And Saul H7586 sent H7971 (QalImpf) messengers H4397 to take H3947 (QalInf) David: H1732 and when they saw H7200 (QalImpf) the company H3862 of the prophets H5030 prophesying, H5012 (NiphPtc) and Samuel H8050 standing H5975 (QalActPtc) [as] appointed H5324 (NiphPtc) over them, the Spirit H7307 of God H430 was upon the messengers H4397 of Saul, H7586 and they also prophesied. και απεστειλεν σαουλ αγγελους λαβειν τον δαυιδ και ειδαν την εκκλησιαν των προφητων και σαμουηλ ειστηκει καθεστηκως επ αυτων και εγενηθη επι τους αγγελους του σαουλ πνευμα θεου και προφητευουσιν
