He said, “You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and have gone away! What more do I have? How can you ask me, ‘What ails you?’ ”

And he saith, ‘My gods which I made ye have taken, and the priest, and ye go; and what to me more? and what is this ye say unto me, What-to thee!’

They took that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and came to Laish, to a people quiet and unsuspecting, and struck them with the edge of the sword; then they burned the city with fire.

And they have taken that which Micah had made, and the priest whom he had, and come in against Laish, against a people quiet and confident, and smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the city have burnt with fire,

There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no dealings with anyone else; and it was in the valley that lies by Beth Rehob. They built the city and lived in it.

And [there was] no deliverer, H5337 (HiphPtc) because it [was] far H7350 from Zidon, H6721 and they had no business H1697 with [any] man; H120 and it was in the valley H6010 that [lieth] by Bethrehob. H1050 And they built H1129 (QalImpf) a city, H5892 and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) therein.

and there is no deliverer, for it is far off from Zidon, and they have no word with any man, and it is in the valley which is by Beth-Rehob; and they build the city, and dwell in it,

They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; however the name of the city used to be Laish.

And they called H7121 (QalImpf) the name H8034 of the city H5892 Dan, H1835 after the name H8034 of Dan H1835 their father, H1 who was born H3205 (PualPerf) unto Israel: H3478 howbeit H199 the name H8034 of the city H5892 [was] Laish H3919 at the first. H7223

and call the name of the city Dan, by the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; and yet Laish is the name of the city at the first.

So they set up for themselves Micah’s engraved image which he made, and it remained all the time that God’s house was in Shiloh.

And they set them up H7760 (QalImpf) Micah’s H4318 graven image, H6459 which he made, H6213 (QalPerf) all the time H3117 that the house H1004 of God H430 was in Shiloh. H7887

And they appoint for them the graven image of Micah, which he had made, all the days of the house of God being in Shiloh.

His master said to him, “We won’t enter into the city of a foreigner that is not of the children of Israel; but we will pass over to Gibeah.”

And his master H113 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, We will not turn aside H5493 (QalImpf) hither into the city H5892 of a stranger, H5237 that [is] not of the children H1121 of Israel; H3478 we will pass over H5674 (QalPerf) to Gibeah. H1390

And his lord saith unto him, ‘Let us not turn aside unto the city of a stranger, that is not of the sons of Israel, thither, but we have passed over unto Gibeah.’

So they passed on and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

And they pass over, and go on, and the sun goeth in upon them near Gibeah, which is to Benjamin;

As they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain wicked fellows, surrounded the house, beating at the door; and they spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, “Bring out the man who came into your house, that we can have sex with him!”

They are making their heart glad, and lo, men of the city, men-sons of worthlessness-have gone round about the house, beating on the door, and they speak unto the old man, the master of the house, saying, ‘Bring out the man who hath come unto thine house, and we know him.’

The man, the master of the house, went out to them, and said to them, “No, my brothers, please don’t act so wickedly; since this man has come into my house, don’t do this folly.

And the man, the master of the house, goeth out unto them, and saith unto them, ‘Nay, my brethren, do not evil, I pray you, after that this man hath come in unto my house, do not this folly;

Then the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, until it was light.

The Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered, “I came into Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night.

And the man, the Levite, husband of the woman who hath been murdered, answereth and saith, ‘Into Gibeah (which is to Benjamin) I have come, I and my concubine, to lodge;

But now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: we will go up against it by lot;

But now this [shall be] the thing H1697 which we will do H6213 (QalImpf) to Gibeah; H1390 [we will go up] by lot H1486 against it;

and now, this is the thing which we do to Gibeah-against it by lot!

The people, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves, and set the battle again in array in the place where they set themselves in array the first day.

And the people H5971 the men H376 of Israel H3478 encouraged H2388 (HithImpf) themselves, and set their battle H4421 again H3254 (HiphImpf) in array H6186 (QalInf) in the place H4725 where they put themselves in array H6186 (QalPerf) the first H7223 day. H3117

And the people, the men of Israel, strengthen themselves, and add to set the battle in array in the place where they arranged themselves on the first day.

The children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to strike and kill of the people as at other times, in the highways, of which one goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah, in the field, about thirty men of Israel.

And the sons of Benjamin come out to meet the people; they have been drawn away out of the city, and begin to smite some of the people-wounded as time by time, in the highways (of which one is going up to Beth-El, and the other to Gibeah in the field), are about thirty men of Israel.

So the children of Benjamin saw that they were struck, for the men of Israel yielded to Benjamin because they trusted the ambushers whom they had set against Gibeah.

So the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that they were smitten: H5062 (NiphPerf) for the men H376 of Israel H3478 gave H5414 (QalImpf) place H4725 to the Benjamites, H1145 because they trusted H982 (QalPerf) unto the liers in wait H693 (QalActPtc) which they had set H7760 (QalPerf) beside Gibeah. H1390

And the sons of Benjamin see that they have been smitten-and the men of Israel give place to Benjamin, for they have trusted unto the ambush which they had set against Gibeah,

Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness, but the battle followed hard after them; and those who came out of the cities destroyed them in the middle of it.

Therefore they turned H6437 (QalImpf) [their backs] before H6440 the men H376 of Israel H3478 unto the way H1870 of the wilderness; H4057 but the battle H4421 overtook H1692 (HiphPerf) them; and them which [came] out of the cities H5892 they destroyed H7843 (HiphPtc) in the midst H8432 of them.

and they turn before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness, and the battle hath followed them; and those who are from the city are destroying them in their midst;

The children of Israel said, “Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up in the assembly to Yahweh?” For they had made a great oath concerning him who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah, saying, “He shall surely be put to death.”

And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said, H559 (QalImpf) Who [is there] among all the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 that H834 came H5927 (QalPerf) not up with the congregation H6951 unto the Lord? H3068 For they had made a great H1419 oath H7621 concerning him that came not up H5927 (QalPerf) to the Lord H3068 to Mizpeh, H4709 saying, H559 (QalInf) He shall surely H4191 (QalInf) be put to death. H4191 (HophImpf)

And the sons of Israel say, ‘Who is he that hath not come up in the assembly out of all the tribes of Israel unto Jehovah?’ for the great oath hath been concerning him who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh, saying, ‘He is surely put to death.’

They said, “What one is there of the tribes of Israel who didn’t come up to Yahweh to Mizpah?” Behold, no one came from Jabesh Gilead to the camp to the assembly.

And they said, H559 (QalImpf) What one H259 [is there] of the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 that came not up H5927 (QalPerf) to Mizpeh H4709 to the Lord? H3068 And, behold, there came H935 (QalPerf) none H376 to the camp H4264 from Jabeshgilead H3003 H1568 to the assembly. H6951

And they say, ‘Who is that one out of the tribes of Israel who hath not come up unto Jehovah to Mizpeh?’ and lo, none hath come in unto the camp from Jabesh-Gilead-unto the assembly.

They found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them to the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

And they found H4672 (QalImpf) among the inhabitants H3427 (QalActPtc) of Jabeshgilead H3003 H1568 four H702 hundred H3967 young H5291 virgins, H1330 that had known H3045 (QalPerf) no man H376 by lying H4904 with any male: H2145 and they brought H935 (HiphImpf) them unto the camp H4264 to Shiloh, H7887 which [is] in the land H776 of Canaan. And they find out of the inhabitants of Jabesh-Gilead four hundred young women, virgins, who have not known man by the lying of a male, and they bring them in unto the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

And the whole congregation H5712 sent H7971 (QalImpf) [some] to speak H1696 (PielImpf) to the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 that [were] in the rock H5553 Rimmon, H7417 and to call H7121 (QalImpf) peaceably H7965 unto them.

And all the company send, and speak, unto the sons of Benjamin who are in the rock Rimmon, and proclaim to them peace;

Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead. There still weren’t enough for them.

And Benjamin H1144 came again H7725 (QalImpf) at that time; H6256 and they gave H5414 (QalImpf) them wives H802 which they had saved alive H2421 (PielPerf) of the women H802 of Jabeshgilead: H3003 H1568 and yet so they sufficed H4672 (QalPerf) them not.

and Benjamin turneth back at that time, and they give to them the women whom they have kept alive of the women of Jabesh-Gilead, and they have not found for all of them so.

They said, “Behold, there is a feast of Yahweh from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.”

Then they said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, [there is] a feast H2282 of the Lord H3068 in Shiloh H7887 yearly H3117 H3117 [in a place] which [is] on the north side H6828 of Bethel, H1008 on the east side H4217 H8121 of the highway H4546 that goeth up H5927 (QalActPtc) from Bethel H1008 to Shechem, H7927 and on the south H5045 of Lebonah. And they say, ‘Lo, a festival of Jehovah is in Shiloh, from time to time, which is on the north of Beth-El, at the rising of the sun, by the highway which is going up from Beth-El to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.’

The children of Benjamin did so, and took wives for themselves according to their number, of those who danced, whom they carried off. They went and returned to their inheritance, built the cities, and lived in them.

And the children H1121 of Benjamin H1144 did so, H6213 (QalImpf) and took H5375 (QalImpf) [them] wives, H802 according to their number, H4557 of them that danced, H2342 (PolePtc) whom they caught: H1497 (QalPerf) and they went H3212 (QalImpf) and returned H7725 (QalImpf) unto their inheritance, H5159 and repaired H1129 (QalImpf) the cities, H5892 and dwelt H3427 (QalImpf) in them.

And the sons of Benjamin do so, and take women according to their number, out of the dancers whom they have taken violently away; and they go, and turn back unto their inheritance, and build the cities, and dwell in them.

She went out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her. They went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

Wherefore she went forth H3318 (QalImpf) out of the place H4725 where she was, and her two H8147 daughters in law H3618 with her; and they went H3212 (QalImpf) on the way H1870 to return H7725 (QalInf) unto the land H776 of Judah. H3063

And she goeth out from the place where she hath been, and her two daughters-in-law with her, and they go in the way to turn back unto the land of Judah.

would you then wait until they were grown? Would you then refrain from having husbands? No, my daughters, for it grieves me seriously for your sakes, for Yahweh’s hand has gone out against me.”

Would ye tarry H7663 (PielImpf) for them H3860 till they were grown? H1431 (QalImpf) would ye stay H5702 (NiphImpf) for them H3860 from having husbands? for them do ye wait till that they grow up? for them do ye shut yourselves up, not to be to a husband? nay, my daughters, for more bitter to me than to you, for the hand of Jehovah hath gone out against me.’

Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God^§ my God.

And Ruth saith, ‘Urge me not to leave thee-to turn back from after thee; for whither thou goest I go, and where thou lodgest I lodge; thy people is my people, and thy God my God.

Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May Yahweh do so to me, and more also, if anything but death parts you and me.”

Where thou diest I die, and there I am buried; thus doth Jehovah to me, and thus doth He add-for death itself doth part between me and thee.’

Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I find favor.” She said to her, “Go, my daughter.”

And Ruth H7327 the Moabitess H4125 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Naomi, H5281 Let me now go H3212 (QalImpf) to the field, H7704 and glean H3950 (PielImpf) ears of corn H7641 after H310 [him] in whose sight H5869 I shall find H4672 (QalImpf) grace. She went, and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

Let your eyes be on the field that they reap, and go after them. Haven’t I commanded the young men not to touch you? When you are thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink from that which the young men have drawn.”

thine eyes are on the field which they reap, and thou hast gone after them; have not I charged the young men not to touch thee? when thou art athirst then thou hast gone unto the vessels, and hast drunk from that which the young men draw.’

May Yahweh repay your work, and a full reward be given to you from Yahweh, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

The Lord H3068 recompense H7999 (PielImpf) thy work, H6467 and a full H8003 reward H4909 be given thee of the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel, H3478 under whose wings H3671 thou art come H935 (QalPerf) to trust. H2620 (QalInf)

Jehovah doth recompense thy work, and thy reward is complete from Jehovah, God of Israel, under whose wings thou hast come to take refuge.’

So she gleaned in the field until evening; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah° of barley.

Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by Yahweh, who has not abandoned his kindness to the living and to the dead.” Naomi said to her, “The man is a close relative to us, one of our near kinsmen.”

And Naomi saith to her daughter-in-law, ‘Blessed is he of Jehovah who hath not forsaken His kindness with the living and with the dead;’ and Naomi saith to her, ‘The man is a relation of ours; he is of our redeemers.’

Now isn’t Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens you were? Behold, he will be winnowing barley tonight on the threshing floor.

And now [is] not Boaz H1162 of our kindred, H4130 with whose maidens H5291 thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth H2219 (QalActPtc) barley H8184 to night H3915 in the threshingfloor. H1637

and now, is not Boaz of our acquaintance, with whose young women thou hast been? lo, he is winnowing the threshing-floor of barley to-night,

It shall be, when he lies down, that you shall note the place where he is lying. Then you shall go in, uncover his feet, and lie down. Then he will tell you what to do.”

Now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do to you all that you say; for all the city of my people knows that you are a worthy woman.

Then she said, “Wait, my daughter, until you know what will happen; for the man will not rest until he has settled this today.”

And she saith, ‘Sit still, my daughter, till thou dost know how the matter falleth, for the man doth not rest except he hath completed the matter to-day.’

Now Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there. Behold, the near kinsman of whom Boaz spoke came by. Boaz said to him, “Come over here, friend, and sit down!” He came over, and sat down.

And Boaz hath gone up to the gate, and sitteth there, and lo, the redeemer is passing by of whom Boaz had spoken, and he saith, ‘Turn aside, sit down here, such a one, such a one;’ and he turneth aside and sitteth down.

He said to the near kinsman, “Naomi, who has come back out of the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land, which was our brother Elimelech’s.

And he saith to the redeemer, ‘A portion of the field which is to our brother, to Elimelech, hath Naomi sold, who hath come back from the fields of Moab;

All the people who were in the gate, and the elders, said, “We are witnesses. May Yahweh make the woman who has come into your house like Rachel and like Leah, which both built the house of Israel; and treat you worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Bethlehem.

And all the people who are in the gate say-also the elders-‘Witnesses! Jehovah make the woman who is coming in unto thy house as Rachel and as Leah, both of whom built the house of Israel; and do thou virtuously in Ephrathah, and proclaim the Name in Beth-Lehem;

Let your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, of the offspring^§ which Yahweh will give you by this young woman.”

The women said to Naomi, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you today without a near kinsman. Let his name be famous in Israel.

And the women say unto Naomi, ‘Blessed is Jehovah who hath not let a redeemer cease to thee to-day, and his name is proclaimed in Israel,

He shall be to you a restorer of life and sustain you in your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”

And he shall be unto thee a restorer H7725 (HiphPtc) of [thy] life, H5315 and a nourisher H3557 (PilpInf) of thine old age: H7872 for thy daughter in law, H3618 which loveth H157 (QalPerf) thee, which is better H2896 to thee than seven H7651 sons, H1121 hath born H3205 (QalPerf) him.

and he hath been to thee for a restorer of life, and for a nourisher of thine old age, for thy daughter-in-law who hath loved thee-who is better to thee than seven sons-hath borne him.’

I prayed for this child, and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him.

For this child H5288 I prayed; H6419 (HithPerf) and the Lord H3068 hath given H5414 (QalImpf) me my petition H7596 which I asked H7592 (QalPerf) of him:

for this youth I prayed, and Jehovah doth give to me my petition which I asked of Him;

Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did to all Israel, and how that they slept with the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

Now Eli H5941 was very H3966 old, H2204 (QalPerf) and heard H8085 (QalPerf) all that his sons H1121 did H6213 (QalImpf) unto all Israel; H3478 and how they lay H7901 (QalImpf) with the women H802 that assembled H6633 (QalActPtc) [at] the door H6607 of the tabernacle H168 of the congregation. H4150

And Eli is very old, and hath heard all that his sons do to all Israel, and how that they lie with the women who are assembling at the opening of the tent of meeting,

No, my sons; for it is not a good report that I hear! You make Yahweh’s people disobey.

Nay, my sons; H1121 for [it is] no good H2896 report H8052 that I hear: H8085 (QalActPtc) ye make the Lord’s H3068 people H5971 to transgress. H5674 (HiphPtc)

Nay, my sons; for the report which I am hearing is not good causing the people of Jehovah to transgress.-

Why do you kick at my sacrifice and at my offering, which I have commanded in my habitation, and honor your sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel my people?’

Wherefore kick H1163 (QalImpf) ye at my sacrifice H2077 and at mine offering, H4503 which I have commanded H6680 (PielPerf) [in my] habitation; H4583 and honourest H3513 (PielImpf) thy sons H1121 above me, to make yourselves fat H1254 (HiphInf) with the chiefest H7225 of all the offerings H4503 of Israel H3478 my people? H5971

Why do ye kick at My sacrifice, and at Mine offering which I commanded in My habitation, and dost honour thy sons above Me, to make yourselves fat from the first part of every offering of Israel, of My people?

This will be the sign to you that will come on your two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas: in one day they will both die.

And this [shall be] a sign H226 unto thee, that shall come H935 (QalImpf) upon thy two H8147 sons, H1121 on Hophni H2652 and Phinehas; H6372 in one H259 day H3117 they shall die H4191 (QalImpf) both H8147 of them.

and this is to thee the sign that cometh unto thy two sons, unto Hophni and Phinehas-in one day they die both of them;
