He will restore that for which he labored, and will not swallow it down. He will not rejoice according to the substance that he has gotten.

Job 20:18 Heb. according to the substance of his exchange

εις κενα και ματαια εκοπιασεν πλουτον εξ ου ου γευσεται ωσπερ στριφνος αμασητος ακαταποτος

For he has oppressed and forsaken the poor. He has violently taken away a house, and he will not build it up.

“Because he knew no quietness within him, he will not save anything of that in which he delights.

Job 20:20 Heb. know

ουκ εστιν αυτου σωτηρια τοις υπαρχουσιν εν επιθυμια αυτου ου σωθησεται

There was nothing left that he didn’t devour, therefore his prosperity will not endure.

Job 20:21 Or, there shall be none left for his meats

All darkness is laid up for his treasures. An unfanned fire will devour him. It will consume that which is left in his tent.

Job 21:4 Heb. shortened

τι γαρ μη ανθρωπου μου η ελεγξις η δια τι ου θυμωθησομαι

Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

Job 21:9 Heb. are peace from fear

You haven’t given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.

ουδε υδωρ διψωντας εποτισας αλλα πεινωντων εστερησας ψωμον

“Isn’t God in the heights of heaven? See the height of the stars, how high they are!

Job 22:12 Heb. the head of the stars

μη ουχι ο τα υψηλα ναιων εφορα τους δε υβρει φερομενους εταπεινωσεν

Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he doesn’t see. He walks on the vault of the sky.’

ει μη ηφανισθη η υποστασις αυτων και το καταλειμμα αυτων καταφαγεται πυρ

Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would listen to me.

και ει εν πολλη ισχυι επελευσεται μοι ειτα εν απειλη μοι ου χρησεται

“If I go east, he is not there. If I go west, I can’t find him.

He works to the north, but I can’t see him. He turns south, but I can’t catch a glimpse of him.

αριστερα ποιησαντος αυτου και ου κατεσχον περιβαλει δεξια και ουκ οψομαι

My foot has held fast to his steps. I have kept his way, and not turned away.

δια τι δε κυριον ελαθον ωραι

From out of the populous city, men groan. The soul of the wounded cries out, yet God doesn’t regard the folly.

In the dark they dig through houses. They shut themselves up in the daytime. They don’t know the light.

He devours the barren who don’t bear. He shows no kindness to the widow.

στειραν γαρ ουκ ευ εποιησεν και γυναιον ουκ ηλεησεν

Yet God preserves the mighty by his power. He rises up who has no assurance of life.

Job 24:22 Or, he trusteth not his own life

If it isn’t so now, who will prove me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?”

Behold, even the moon has no brightness, and the stars are not pure in his sight;

ει σεληνη συντασσει και ουκ επιφαυσκει αστρα δε ου καθαρα εναντιον αυτου

“How have you helped him who is without power! How have you saved the arm that has no strength!

τινι προσκεισαι η τινι μελλεις βοηθειν ποτερον ουχ ω πολλη ισχυς και ω βραχιων κραταιος εστιν

How have you counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge!

How hast thou counselled H3289 (QalPerf) him that hath no H3808 wisdom? H2451 And how hast thou plentifully H7230 declared H3045 (HiphPerf) the thing as it is? H8454

τινι συμβεβουλευσαι ουχ ω πασα σοφια η τινι επακολουθησεις ουχ ω μεγιστη δυναμις

He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not burst under them.

δεσμευων υδωρ εν νεφελαις αυτου και ουκ ερραγη νεφος υποκατω αυτου

Far be it from me that I should justify you. Until I die I will not put away my integrity from me.

μη μοι ειη δικαιους υμας αποφηναι εως αν αποθανω ου γαρ απαλλαξω μου την ακακιαν

I hold fast to my righteousness, and will not let it go. My heart will not reproach me so long as I live.

Job 27:6 Heb. from my days

δικαιοσυνη δε προσεχων ου μη προωμαι ου γαρ συνοιδα εμαυτω ατοπα πραξας

I will teach you about the hand of God. I will not conceal that which is with the Almighty.

If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword. His offspring will not be satisfied with bread.

Those who remain of him will be buried in death. His widows will make no lamentation.

He lies down rich, but he will not do so again. He opens his eyes, and he is not.

πλουσιος κοιμηθεις και ου προσθησει οφθαλμους αυτου διηνοιξεν και ουκ εστιν

For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand.

For God shall cast H7993 (HiphImpf) upon him, and not spare: H2550 (QalImpf) He would fain^§ H1272 (QalInf) flee H1272 (QalImpf) out of his hand. H3027

Job 27:22 Heb. in fleeing he would flee

και επιρριψει επ αυτον και ου φεισεται εκ χειρος αυτου φυγη φευξεται

That path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon’s eye seen it.
