Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces who were with him took all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after he had killed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam—the men of war, with the women, the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought back from Gibeon.

and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please let our supplication be presented before you, and pray for us to Yahweh your God, even for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes see us,

Jeremiah 42:2 Or, let our supplication fall before thee

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to Yahweh your God according to your words; and it will happen that whatever thing Yahweh answers you, I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you.”

Then they said to Jeremiah, “May Yahweh be a true and faithful witness among us, if we don’t do according to all the word with which Yahweh your God sends you to tell us.

Then he called Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

So will it be with all the men who set their faces to go into Egypt to live there. They will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence. None of them will remain or escape from the evil that I will bring on them.’

So shall it be with all the men^§ H582 that set H7760 (QalPerf) their faces H6440 to go H935 (QalInf) into Egypt H4714 to sojourn H1481 (QalInf) there; they shall die H4191 (QalImpf) by the sword, H2719 by the famine, H7458 and by the pestilence: H1698 and none of them shall remain H8300 or escape H6412 from H6440 the evil H7451 that I will bring H935 (HiphPtc) upon them.

For you have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to Yahweh our God; and according to all that Yahweh our God says, so declare to us, and we will do it.’

Jeremiah 42:20 Or, you have used deceit against your souls

^[49:20] οτι επονηρευσασθε εν ψυχαις υμων αποστειλαντες με λεγοντες προσευξαι περι ημων προς κυριον και κατα παντα α εαν λαληση σοι κυριος ποιησομεν

I have declared it to you today; but you have not obeyed Yahweh your God’s voice in anything for which he has sent me to you.

When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of Yahweh their God, with which Yahweh their God had sent him to them, even all these words,

then Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men spoke, saying to Jeremiah, “You speak falsely. Yahweh our God has not sent you to say, ‘You shall not go into Egypt to live there;’

So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, didn’t obey Yahweh’s voice, to dwell in the land of Judah.

^[50:4] και ουκ ηκουσεν ιωαναν και παντες οι ηγεμονες της δυναμεως και πας ο λαος της φωνης κυριου κατοικησαι εν γη ιουδα

But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces took all the remnant of Judah, who had returned from all the nations where they had been driven, to live in the land of Judah—

But Johanan H3110 the son H1121 of Kareah, H7143 and all the captains H8269 of the forces, H2428 took H3947 (QalImpf) all the remnant H7611 of Judah, H3063 that were returned H7725 (QalPerf) from all nations, H1471 whither they had been driven, H5080 (NiphPerf) to dwell H1481 (QalInf) in the land H776 of Judah; H3063

^[50:5] και ελαβεν ιωαναν και παντες οι ηγεμονες της δυναμεως παντας τους καταλοιπους ιουδα τους αποστρεψαντας κατοικειν εν τη γη

the men, the women, the children, the king’s daughters, and every person who Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan; and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who lived at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying,

^[51:1] ο λογος ο γενομενος προς ιερεμιαν απασιν τοις ιουδαιοις τοις κατοικουσιν εν γη αιγυπτω και τοις καθημενοις εν μαγδωλω και εν ταφνας και εν γη παθουρης λεγων

“Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have seen all the evil that I have brought on Jerusalem, and on all the cities of Judah. Behold, today they are a desolation, and no man dwells in them,

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 Ye have seen H7200 (QalPerf) all the evil H7451 that I have brought H935 (HiphPerf) upon Jerusalem, H3389 and upon all the cities H5892 of Judah; H3063 and, behold, this day H3117 they are a desolation, H2723 and no man dwelleth H3427 (QalActPtc) therein,

However I sent to you all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, “Oh, don’t do this abominable thing that I hate.”

Howbeit I sent H7971 (QalImpf) unto you all my servants H5650 the prophets, H5030 rising early H7925 (HiphInf) and sending H7971 (QalInf) them, saying, H559 (QalInf) Oh, do H6213 (QalImpf) not this abominable H8441 thing H1697 that I hate. H8130 (QalPerf)

^[51:4] και απεστειλα προς υμας τους παιδας μου τους προφητας ορθρου και απεστειλα λεγων μη ποιησητε το πραγμα της μολυνσεως ταυτης ης εμισησα

in that you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, burning incense to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have gone to live, that you may be cut off, and that you may be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

in that ye provoke me unto wrath H3707 (HiphInf) with the works H4639 of your hands, H3027 burning incense H6999 (PielInf) unto other H312 gods H430 in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 whither ye be gone H935 (QalActPtc) to dwell, H1481 (QalInf) that ye might cut yourselves off, H3772 (HiphInf) and that ye might be a curse H7045 and a reproach H2781 among all the nations H1471 of the earth? ^[51:8] παραπικραναι με εν τοις εργοις των χειρων υμων θυμιαν θεοις ετεροις εν γη αιγυπτω εις ην εισηλθατε ενοικειν εκει ινα εκκοπητε και ινα γενησθε εις καταραν και εις ονειδισμον εν πασιν τοις εθνεσιν της γης

“Therefore Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will set my face against you for evil, even to cut off all Judah.

Therefore thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 Behold, I will set H7760 (QalActPtc) my face H6440 against you for evil, H7451 and to cut off H3772 (HiphInf) all Judah. H3063

^[51:11] δια τουτο ουτως ειπεν κυριος ιδου εγω εφιστημι το προσωπον μου

I will take the remnant of Judah that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to live there, and they will all be consumed. They will fall in the land of Egypt. They will be consumed by the sword and by the famine. They will die, from the least even to the greatest, by the sword and by the famine. They will be an object of horror, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach.

And I will take H3947 (QalPerf) the remnant H7611 of Judah, H3063 that have set H7760 (QalPerf) their faces H6440 to go H935 (QalInf) into the land H776 of Egypt H4714 to sojourn H1481 (QalInf) there, and they shall all be consumed, H8552 (QalPerf) and fall H5307 (QalImpf) in the land H776 of Egypt; H4714 they shall even be consumed H8552 (NiphImpf) by the sword H2719 and by the famine: H7458 they shall die, H4191 (QalImpf) from the least H6996 even unto the greatest, H1419 by the sword H2719 and by the famine: H7458 and they shall be an execration, H423 and an astonishment, H8047 and a curse, H7045 and a reproach. Then all the men who knew that their wives burned incense to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, even all the people who lived in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying,

^[51:15] και απεκριθησαν τω ιερεμια παντες οι ανδρες οι γνοντες οτι θυμιωσιν αι γυναικες αυτων θεοις ετεροις και πασαι αι γυναικες συναγωγη μεγαλη και πας ο λαος οι καθημενοι εν γη αιγυπτω εν παθουρη λεγοντες

But we will certainly perform every word that has gone out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of the sky and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; for then we had plenty of food, and were well, and saw no evil.

^[51:18] και ως διελιπομεν θυμιωντες τη βασιλισση του ουρανου ηλαττωθημεν παντες και εν ρομφαια και εν λιμω εξελιπομεν

Then Jeremiah said to all the people—to the men and to the women, even to all the people who had given him an answer, saying,

Behold, I watch over them for evil, and not for good; and all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until they are all gone.

Those who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah few in number. All the remnant of Judah, who have gone into the land of Egypt to live there, will know whose word will stand, mine or theirs.
