και ειπεν οταν μαιουσθε τας εβραιας και ωσιν προς τω τικτειν εαν μεν αρσεν η αποκτεινατε αυτο εαν δε θηλυ περιποιεισθε αυτο

But the midwives feared God,^§ and didn’t do what the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the baby boys alive.

Exodus 1:17 The Hebrew word rendered “God” is “אֱלֹהִ֑ים” (Elohim).

But the midwives H3205 (PielPtc) feared H3372 (QalImpf) God, H430 and did H6213 (QalPerf) not as the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 commanded H1696 (PielPerf) them, but saved H2421 the men children H3206 alive. H2421 (PielImpf)

The king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this thing and saved the boys alive?”

εκαλεσεν δε ο βασιλευς αιγυπτου τας μαιας και ειπεν αυταις τι οτι εποιησατε το πραγμα τουτο και εζωογονειτε τα αρσενα

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

God dealt well with the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very mighty.

She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,° for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”
