Yahweh’s^§ word came to him in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

Now Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

Moreover Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” I said, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” I said, “I see a boiling cauldron; and it is tipping away from the north.”

“But where are your gods that you have made for yourselves? Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble, for you have as many gods as you have towns, O Judah.

Jeremiah 2:28 Heb. evil

Generation, consider Yahweh’s word. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say, ‘We have broken loose. We will come to you no more’?

Jeremiah 2:31 Heb. we have dominion

ακουσατε λογον κυριου ταδε λεγει κυριος μη ερημος εγενομην τω ισραηλ η γη κεχερσωμενη δια τι ειπεν ο λαος μου ου κυριευθησομεθα και ουχ ηξομεν προς σε ετι

“They say, ‘If a man puts away his wife, and she goes from him, and becomes another man’s, should he return to her again?’ Wouldn’t that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers; yet return again to me,” says Yahweh.

Jeremiah 3:1 Heb. Saying

εαν εξαποστειλη ανηρ την γυναικα αυτου και απελθη απ αυτου και γενηται ανδρι ετερω μη ανακαμπτουσα ανακαμψει προς αυτον ετι ου μιαινομενη μιανθησεται η γυνη εκεινη και συ εξεπορνευσας εν ποιμεσιν πολλοις και ανεκαμπτες προς με λεγει κυριος

Therefore the showers have been withheld and there has been no latter rain; yet you have had a prostitute’s forehead and you refused to be ashamed.

Because she took her prostitution lightly, the land was polluted, and she committed adultery with stones and with wood.

Jeremiah 3:9 Or, fame

και εγενετο εις ουθεν η πορνεια αυτης και εμοιχευσεν το ξυλον και τον λιθον

“It will happen at that day,” says Yahweh, “that the heart of the king will perish, along with the heart of the princes. The priests will be astonished, and the prophets will wonder.”

Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You will have peace;’ whereas the sword reaches to the heart.”

As keepers of a field, they are against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me,’” says Yahweh.

For Yahweh says, “The whole land will be a desolation; yet I will not make a full end.

ταδε λεγει κυριος ερημος εσται πασα η γη συντελειαν δε ου μη ποιησω

They were as fed horses roaming at large. Everyone neighed after his neighbor’s wife.

The prophets will become wind, and the word is not in them. Thus it will be done to them.”

οι προφηται ημων ησαν εις ανεμον και λογος κυριου ουχ υπηρχεν εν αυτοις ουτως εσται αυτοις

It will happen when you say, ‘Why has Yahweh our God done all these things to us?’ Then you shall say to them, ‘Just as you have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, H559 (QalImpf) Wherefore H8478 H4100 doeth H6213 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 our God H430 all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer H559 (QalPerf) them, Like as ye have forsaken H5800 (QalPerf) me, and served H5647 (QalImpf) strange H5236 gods H430 in your land, H776 so shall ye serve H5647 (QalImpf) strangers H2114 (QalPtc) in a land H776 that is not yours.

και εσται οταν ειπητε τινος ενεκεν εποιησεν κυριος ο θεος ημων ημιν απαντα ταυτα και ερεις αυτοις ανθ ων εδουλευσατε θεοις αλλοτριοις εν τη γη υμων ουτως δουλευσετε αλλοτριοις εν γη ουχ υμων

“But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart. They have revolted and gone.

τω δε λαω τουτω εγενηθη καρδια ανηκοος και απειθης και εξεκλιναν και απηλθοσαν

“An astonishing and horrible thing has happened in the land.

εκστασις και φρικτα εγενηθη επι της γης

To whom should I speak and testify, that they may hear? Behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they can’t listen. Behold, Yahweh’s word has become a reproach to them. They have no delight in it.

To whom shall I speak, H1696 (PielImpf) and give warning, H5749 (HiphImpf) that they may hear? προς τινα λαλησω και διαμαρτυρωμαι και ακουσεται ιδου απεριτμητα τα ωτα αυτων και ου δυνανται ακουειν ιδου το ρημα κυριου εγενετο αυτοις εις ονειδισμον ου μη βουληθωσιν αυτο ακουσαι

The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,

Has this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, I myself have seen it,” says Yahweh.

Is this house, H1004 which is called H7121 (NiphPerf) by my name, H8034 become a den H4631 of robbers H6530 in your eyes? H5869 Behold, even I have seen H7200 (QalPerf) it, saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord. H3068

μη σπηλαιον ληστων ο οικος μου ου επικεκληται το ονομα μου επ αυτω εκει ενωπιον υμων και εγω ιδου εωρακα λεγει κυριος

but this thing I commanded them, saying, ‘Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people. Walk in all the way that I command you, that it may be well with you.’

αλλ η το ρημα τουτο ενετειλαμην αυτοις λεγων ακουσατε της φωνης μου και εσομαι υμιν εις θεον και υμεις εσεσθε μοι εις λαον και πορευεσθε εν πασαις ταις οδοις μου αις αν εντειλωμαι υμιν οπως αν ευ η υμιν

But they didn’t listen or turn their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart, and went backward, and not forward.

και ουκ ηκουσαν μου και ου προσεσχεν το ους αυτων αλλ επορευθησαν εν τοις ενθυμημασιν της καρδιας αυτων της κακης και εγενηθησαν εις τα οπισθεν και ουκ εις τα εμπροσθεν

The dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth. No one will frighten them away.

Then I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land will become a waste.”

και καταλυσω εκ πολεων ιουδα και εκ διοδων ιερουσαλημ φωνην ευφραινομενων και φωνην χαιροντων φωνην νυμφιου και φωνην νυμφης οτι εις ερημωσιν εσται πασα η γη

They will spread them before the sun, the moon, and all the army of the sky, which they have loved, which they have served, after which they have walked, which they have sought, and which they have worshiped. They will not be gathered or be buried. They will be like dung on the surface of the earth.

The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying,

which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace,’ saying, ‘Obey my voice and do them, according to all which I command you; so you shall be my people, and I will be your God;

ης ενετειλαμην τοις πατρασιν υμων εν ημερα η ανηγαγον αυτους εκ γης αιγυπτου εκ καμινου της σιδηρας λεγων ακουσατε της φωνης μου και ποιησατε παντα οσα εαν εντειλωμαι υμιν και εσεσθε μοι εις λαον και εγω εσομαι υμιν εις θεον

For according to the number of your cities are your gods, Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you have set up altars to the shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.’

Jeremiah 11:13 Heb. shame

οτι κατ αριθμον των πολεων σου ησαν θεοι σου ιουδα και κατ αριθμον εξοδων της ιερουσαλημ εταξατε βωμους θυμιαν τη βααλ

There will be no remnant to them, for I will bring evil on the men of Anathoth, even the year of their visitation.’”

My heritage has become to me as a lion in the forest. She has uttered her voice against me. Therefore I have hated her.

Jeremiah 12:8 Or, yelleth. Heb. giveth out his voice

εγενηθη η κληρονομια μου εμοι ως λεων εν δρυμω εδωκεν επ εμε την φωνην αυτης δια τουτο εμισησα αυτην

It will happen that after I have plucked them up, I will return and have compassion on them. I will bring them again, every man to his heritage, and every man to his land.

It will happen, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, ‘As Yahweh lives;’ even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will be built up in the middle of my people.

και εσται εαν μαθοντες μαθωσιν την οδον του λαου μου του ομνυειν τω ονοματι μου ζη κυριος καθως εδιδαξαν τον λαον μου ομνυειν τη βααλ και οικοδομηθησονται εν μεσω του λαου μου

Yahweh’s word came to me the second time, saying,

And the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto me the second time, H8145 saying, H559 (QalInf)

και εγενηθη λογος κυριου προς με λεγων

After many days, Yahweh said to me, “Arise, go to the Euphrates, and take the belt from there, which I commanded you to hide there.”

And it came to pass after H7093 many H7227 days, H3117 that the Lord H3068 said H559 (QalImpf) unto me, Arise, H6965 (QalImpv) go H3212 (QalImpv) to Euphrates, H6578 and take H3947 (QalImpv) the girdle H232 from thence, which I commanded H6680 (PielPerf) thee to hide H2934 (QalInf) there.

και εγενετο μεθ ημερας πολλας και ειπεν κυριος προς με αναστηθι βαδισον επι τον ευφρατην και λαβε εκειθεν το περιζωμα ο ενετειλαμην σοι του κατακρυψαι εκει

Then Yahweh’s word came to me, saying,

Then the word H1697 of the Lord H3068 came unto me, saying, H559 (QalInf)

και εγενηθη λογος κυριου προς με λεγων

This evil people, who refuse to hear my words, who walk in the stubbornness of their heart, and have gone after other gods to serve them and to worship them, will even be as this belt, which is profitable for nothing.

This evil H7451 people, H5971 which refuse H3987 to hear H8085 (QalInf) my words, H1697 which walk H1980 (QalActPtc) in the imagination^§ H8307 of their heart, H3820 and walk H3212 (QalImpf) after H310 other H312 gods, H430 to serve H5647 (QalInf) them, and to worship H7812 (HithInf) them, shall even be as this girdle, H232 which is good H6743 (QalImpf) for nothing.

Jeremiah 13:10 Or, stubbornness

την πολλην ταυτην υβριν τους μη βουλομενους υπακουειν των λογων μου και πορευθεντας οπισω θεων αλλοτριων του δουλευειν αυτοις και του προσκυνειν αυτοις και εσονται ωσπερ το περιζωμα τουτο ο ου χρησθησεται εις ουθεν

For as the belt clings to the waist of a man, so I have caused the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah to cling to me,’ says Yahweh; ‘that they may be to me for a people, for a name, for praise, and for glory; but they would not hear.’

και εγενετο λογος κυριου προς ιερεμιαν περι της αβροχιας

Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed. They cover their heads.

και τα εργα της γης εξελιπεν οτι ουκ ην υετος ησχυνθησαν γεωργοι επεκαλυψαν την κεφαλην αυτων

Yes, the doe in the field also calves and forsakes her young, because there is no grass.

και ελαφοι εν αγρω ετεκον και εγκατελιπον οτι ουκ ην βοτανη

You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night?

O the hope H4723 of Israel, H3478 the saviour H3467 (HiphPtc) thereof in time H6256 of trouble, H6869 why shouldest thou be as a stranger H1616 in the land, H776 and as a wayfaring man H732 (QalActPtc) that turneth aside H5186 (QalPerf) to tarry for a night? H3885 (QalInf)

υπομονη ισραηλ κυριε και σωζεις εν καιρω κακων ινα τι εγενηθης ωσει παροικος επι της γης και ως αυτοχθων εκκλινων εις καταλυμα

Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, Yahweh, are in the middle of us, and we are called by your name. Don’t leave us.

Why shouldest thou be as a man H376 astonied, H1724 (NiphPtc) as a mighty man H1368 that cannot H3201 (QalImpf) save? H3467 (HiphInf) yet thou, O Lord, H3068 art in the midst H7130 of us, and we are called H7121 (NiphPerf) by thy name; H8034 leave H3240 (HiphImpf) us not.

μη εση ωσπερ ανθρωπος υπνων η ως ανηρ ου δυναμενος σωζειν και συ εν ημιν ει κυριε και το ονομα σου επικεκληται εφ ημας μη επιλαθη ημων

Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Behold, the prophets tell them, ‘You will not see the sword, neither will you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.’”

Jeremiah 14:13 Heb. peace of truth

και ειπα ω κυριε ιδου οι προφηται αυτων προφητευουσιν και λεγουσιν ουκ οψεσθε μαχαιραν ουδε λιμος εσται εν υμιν οτι αληθειαν και ειρηνην δωσω επι της γης και εν τω τοπω τουτω

Therefore Yahweh says concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, but I didn’t send them, yet they say, ‘Sword and famine will not be in this land.’ Those prophets will be consumed by sword and famine.

Therefore thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord H3068 concerning the prophets H5030 that prophesy H5012 (NiphPtc) in my name, H8034 and I sent H7971 (QalPerf) them not, yet they say, H559 (QalActPtc) Sword H2719 and famine H7458 shall not be in this land; H776 By sword H2719 and famine H7458 shall those prophets H5030 be consumed. δια τουτο ταδε λεγει κυριος περι των προφητων των προφητευοντων επι τω ονοματι μου ψευδη και εγω ουκ απεστειλα αυτους οι λεγουσιν μαχαιρα και λιμος ουκ εσται επι της γης ταυτης εν θανατω νοσερω αποθανουνται και εν λιμω συντελεσθησονται οι προφηται

The people to whom they prophesy will be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword. They will have no one to bury them—them, their wives, their sons, or their daughters, for I will pour their wickedness on them.

And the people H5971 to whom they prophesy H5012 (NiphPtc) shall be cast out H7993 (HophPtc) in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem H3389 because H6440 of the famine H7458 and the sword; H2719 and they shall have none to bury H6912 (PielPtc) them, H1992 them, their wives, H802 nor their sons, H1121 nor their daughters: H1323 for I will pour H8210 (QalPerf) their wickedness H7451 upon them.
