και απεστειλεν δεββωρα και εκαλεσεν τον βαρακ υιον αβινεεμ εκ κεδες νεφθαλι και ειπεν προς αυτον ουχι σοι ενετειλατο κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ και απελευση εις ορος θαβωρ και λημψη μετα σεαυτου δεκα χιλιαδας ανδρων απο των υιων νεφθαλι και απο των υιων ζαβουλων

Then Gideon built an altar there to Yahweh, and called it “Yahweh is Peace.”^§ To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Therefore on that day he named him Jerub-Baal,° saying, “Let Baal contend against him, because he has broken down his altar.”

Judges 6:32 “Jerub-Baal” means “Let Baal contend”.

The woman bore a son and named him Samson. The child grew, and Yahweh blessed him.

When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath Lehi.°

Judges 15:17 “Ramath” means “hill” and “Lehi” means “jawbone”.

He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?”

Samson called to Yahweh, and said, “Lord Yahweh, remember me, please, and strengthen me, please, only this once, God, that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.”

They went up and encamped in Kiriath Jearim in Judah. Therefore they call that place Mahaneh Dan to this day. Behold, it is behind Kiriath Jearim.

As they called to the children of Dan, they turned their faces, and said to Micah, “What ails you, that you come with such a company?”

They called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; however the name of the city used to be Laish.

και εκαλεσαν το ονομα της πολεως δαν κατα το ονομα του πατρος αυτων ος εγενηθη τω ισραηλ και ην λαις ονομα τη πολει το προτερον

The whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin who were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace to them.

She said to them, “Don’t call me Naomi.° Call me Mara,° for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

Ruth 1:20a “Naomi” means “pleasant”.
Ruth 1:20b “Mara” means “bitter”.

The women said to Naomi, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has not left you today without a near kinsman. Let his name be famous in Israel.

The women, her neighbors, gave him a name, saying, “A son is born to Naomi”. They named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

When the time had come, Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel,° saying, “Because I have asked him of Yahweh.”

Yahweh called Samuel. He said, “Here I am.”

He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He said, “I didn’t call. Lie down again.” He went and lay down.

Yahweh called yet again, “Samuel!” Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” He answered, “I didn’t call, my son. Lie down again.”

And he answered, H559 (QalImpf) I called H7121 (QalPerf) not, my son; H1121 lie down H7901 (QalImpv) again. H7725 (QalImpv)

και προσεθετο κυριος και εκαλεσεν σαμουηλ σαμουηλ και επορευθη προς ηλι το δευτερον και ειπεν ιδου εγω οτι κεκληκας με και ειπεν ου κεκληκα σε αναστρεφε καθευδε

Yahweh called Samuel again the third time. He arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; for you called me.” Eli perceived that Yahweh had called the child.

And the Lord H3068 called H7121 (QalInf) Samuel H8050 again H3254 (HiphImpf) the third time. H7992 And he arose H6965 (QalImpf) and went H3212 (QalImpf) to Eli, H5941 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Here [am] I; for thou didst call H7121 (QalPerf) me. και προσεθετο κυριος καλεσαι σαμουηλ εν τριτω και ανεστη και επορευθη προς ηλι και ειπεν ιδου εγω οτι κεκληκας με και εσοφισατο ηλι οτι κυριος κεκληκεν το παιδαριον

Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down. It shall be, if he calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Yahweh; for your servant hears.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Therefore Eli H5941 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Samuel, H8050 Go, H3212 (QalImpv) lie down: H7901 (QalImpv) and it shall be, if he call H7121 (QalImpf) thee, that thou shalt say, H559 (QalPerf) Speak, H1696 (PielImpv) Lord; H3068 for thy servant H5650 heareth. και ειπεν αναστρεφε καθευδε τεκνον και εσται εαν καλεση σε και ερεις λαλει κυριε οτι ακουει ο δουλος σου και επορευθη σαμουηλ και εκοιμηθη εν τω τοπω αυτου

Yahweh came, and stood, and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak; for your servant hears.”

και ηλθεν κυριος και κατεστη και εκαλεσεν αυτον ως απαξ και απαξ και ειπεν σαμουηλ λαλει οτι ακουει ο δουλος σου

Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son!” He said, “Here I am.”

Then Eli H5941 called H7121 (QalImpf) Samuel, H8050 and said, H559 (QalImpf) Samuel, H8050 my son. H1121 And he answered, H559 (QalImpf) Here [am] I.

και ειπεν ηλι προς σαμουηλ σαμουηλ τεκνον και ειπεν ιδου εγω

She named the child Ichabod,° saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband.

1 Samuel 4:21 “Ichabod” means “no glory”.

και εκαλεσεν το παιδαριον ουαι βαρχαβωθ υπερ της κιβωτου του θεου και υπερ του πενθερου αυτης και υπερ του ανδρος αυτης

The Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with Yahweh’s ark? Show us how we should send it to its place.”

And the Philistines H6430 called H7121 (QalImpf) for the priests H3548 and the diviners, H7080 (QalActPtc) saying, H559 (QalInf) What shall we do H6213 (QalImpf) to the ark H727 of the Lord? H3068 tell H3045 (HiphImpv) us wherewith we shall send H7971 (PielImpf) it to his place. H4725

και καλουσιν αλλοφυλοι τους ιερεις και τους μαντεις και τους επαοιδους αυτων λεγοντες τι ποιησωμεν τη κιβωτω κυριου γνωρισατε ημιν εν τινι αποστελουμεν αυτην εις τον τοπον αυτης

Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer,° saying, “Yahweh helped us until now.”

1 Samuel 7:12 “Ebenezer” means “stone of help”.

και ελαβεν σαμουηλ λιθον ενα και εστησεν αυτον ανα μεσον μασσηφαθ και ανα μεσον της παλαιας και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου αβενεζερ λιθος του βοηθου και ειπεν εως ενταυθα εβοηθησεν ημιν κυριος

(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come! Let’s go to the seer;” for he who is now called a prophet was before called a seer.)

και εμπροσθεν εν ισραηλ ταδε ελεγεν εκαστος εν τω πορευεσθαι επερωταν τον θεον δευρο πορευθωμεν προς τον βλεποντα οτι τον προφητην εκαλει ο λαος εμπροσθεν ο βλεπων

As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

ως αν εισελθητε την πολιν ουτως ευρησετε αυτον εν τη πολει πριν αναβηναι αυτον εις βαμα του φαγειν οτι ου μη φαγη ο λαος εως του εισελθειν αυτον οτι ουτος ευλογει την θυσιαν και μετα ταυτα εσθιουσιν οι ξενοι και νυν αναβητε οτι δια την ημεραν ευρησετε αυτον

Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

And Samuel H8050 took H3947 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 and his servant, H5288 and brought H935 (HiphImpf) them into the parlour, H3957 and made them sit H5414 (QalImpf) in the chiefest H7218 place H4725 among them that were bidden, H7121 (QalPasPtc) which [were] about thirty H7970 persons. H376

The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’ ” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

And the cook H2876 took up H7311 (HiphImpf) the shoulder, H7785 and [that] which [was] upon it, and set H7760 (QalImpf) [it] before H6440 Saul. και υψωσεν ο μαγειρος την κωλεαν και παρεθηκεν αυτην ενωπιον σαουλ και ειπεν σαμουηλ τω σαουλ ιδου υπολειμμα παραθες αυτο ενωπιον σου και φαγε οτι εις μαρτυριον τεθειται σοι παρα τους αλλους αποκνιζε και εφαγεν σαουλ μετα σαμουηλ εν τη ημερα εκεινη

They arose early; and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they both went outside, he and Samuel, together.

And they arose early: H7925 (HiphImpf) and it came to pass about the spring H5927 (QalInf) of the day, H7837 that Samuel H8050 called H7121 (QalImpf) Saul H7586 to the top of the house, H1406 saying, H559 (QalInf) Up, H6965 (QalImpv) that I may send thee away. και εκοιμηθη και εγενετο ως ανεβαινεν ο ορθρος και εκαλεσεν σαμουηλ τον σαουλ επι τω δωματι λεγων αναστα και εξαποστελω σε και ανεστη σαουλ και εξηλθεν αυτος και σαμουηλ εως εξω

Isn’t it wheat harvest today? I will call to Yahweh, that he may send thunder and rain; and you will know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in Yahweh’s sight, in asking for a king.”

[Is it] not wheat H2406 harvest H7105 to day? H3117 I will call H7121 (QalImpf) unto the Lord, H3068 and he shall send H5414 (QalImpf) thunder H6963 and rain; H4306 that ye may perceive H3045 (QalImpv) and see H7200 (QalImpv) that your wickedness H7451 [is] great, H7227 which ye have done H6213 (QalPerf) in the sight H5869 of the Lord, H3068 in asking H7592 (QalInf) you a king. H4428

ουχι θερισμος πυρων σημερον επικαλεσομαι κυριον και δωσει φωνας και υετον και γνωτε και ιδετε οτι η κακια υμων μεγαλη ην εποιησατε ενωπιον κυριου αιτησαντες εαυτοις βασιλεα

So Samuel called to Yahweh, and Yahweh sent thunder and rain that day. Then all the people greatly feared Yahweh and Samuel.

So Samuel H8050 called H7121 (QalImpf) unto the Lord; H3068 and the Lord H3068 sent H5414 (QalImpf) thunder H6963 and rain H4306 that day: H3117 and all the people H5971 greatly H3966 feared H3372 (QalImpf) the Lord H3068 and Samuel. H8050

και επεκαλεσατο σαμουηλ τον κυριον και εδωκεν κυριος φωνας και υετον εν τη ημερα εκεινη και εφοβηθησαν πας ο λαος τον κυριον σφοδρα και τον σαμουηλ

Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you.”

And call H7121 (QalPerf) Jesse H3448 to the sacrifice, H2077 and I will shew H3045 (HiphImpf) thee what thou shalt do: H6213 (QalImpf) and thou shalt anoint H4886 (QalPerf) unto me [him] whom I name H559 (QalImpf) unto thee.

και καλεσεις τον ιεσσαι εις την θυσιαν και γνωριω σοι α ποιησεις και χρισεις ον εαν ειπω προς σε

He said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.

And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Peaceably: H7965 I am come H935 (QalPerf) to sacrifice H2076 (QalInf) unto the Lord: H3068 sanctify H6942 (HithImpv) yourselves, and come H935 (QalPerf) with me to the sacrifice. και ειπεν ειρηνη θυσαι τω κυριω ηκω αγιασθητε και ευφρανθητε μετ εμου σημερον και ηγιασεν τον ιεσσαι και τους υιους αυτου και εκαλεσεν αυτους εις την θυσιαν

Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Yahweh has not chosen this one, either.”

Then Jesse H3448 called H7121 (QalImpf) Abinadab, H41 and made him pass H5674 (HiphImpf) before H6440 Samuel. H8050 And he said, H559 (QalImpf) Neither hath the Lord H3068 chosen H977 (QalPerf) this.

και εκαλεσεν ιεσσαι τον αμιναδαβ και παρηλθεν κατα προσωπον σαμουηλ και ειπεν ουδε τουτον εξελεξατο κυριος
