Introduction

authorship, audience, history

Esther is the twelfth of the Historical Books and is set in the Persian court, where a Jewish orphan becomes queen and a royal official plots the destruction of her people. God is never named in the book, which is part of its point: his hand is everywhere in it and nowhere on its surface.
