[1] Now in the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, on the thirteenth day of the month, when the king’s commandment and his decree came near to be put in execution, on the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to conquer them, (but it turned out that the opposite happened, that the Jews conquered those who hated them), [2] the Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, to lay hands on those who wanted to harm them. No one could withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen on all the people. [3] All the princes of the provinces, the local governors, the governors, and those who did the king’s business helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. [4] For Mordecai was great in the king’s house, and his fame went out throughout all the provinces, for the man Mordecai grew greater and greater. [5] The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them. [6] In the citadel of Susa, the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men. [7] They killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha, [8] Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha, [9] Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha, [10] the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews’ enemy, but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder. [11] On that day, the number of those who were slain in the citadel of Susa was brought before the king. [12] The king said to Esther the queen, “The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in the citadel of Susa, including the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your further request? It shall be done.” [13] Then Esther said, “If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do tomorrow also according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.” [14] The king commanded this to be done. A decree was given out in Susa; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons. [15] The Jews who were in Susa gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the month Adar, and killed three hundred men in Susa; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder. [16] The other Jews who were in the king’s provinces gathered themselves together, defended their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they didn’t lay their hand on the plunder. [17] This was done on the thirteenth day of the month Adar; and on the fourteenth day of that month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness. [18] But the Jews who were in Susa assembled together on the thirteenth and on the fourteenth days of the month; and on the fifteenth day of that month, they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness. [19] Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the unwalled towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a day of gladness and feasting, a holiday, and a day of sending presents of food to one another. [20] Mordecai wrote these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of the King Ahasuerus, both near and far, [21] to enjoin them that they should keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month Adar yearly, [22] as the days in which the Jews had rest from their enemies, and the month which was turned to them from sorrow to gladness, and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, and of sending presents of food to one another, and gifts to the needy. [23] The Jews accepted the custom that they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them, [24] because Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast “Pur”, that is the lot, to consume them and to destroy them; [25] but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked plan, which he had planned against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. [26] Therefore they called these days “Purim”, from the word “Pur.” Therefore because of all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and that which had come to them, [27] the Jews established and imposed on themselves, on their descendants, and on all those who joined themselves to them, so that it should not fail that they would keep these two days according to what was written and according to its appointed time every year; [28] and that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and that these days of Purim should not fail from among the Jews, nor their memory perish from their offspring.§ [29] Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew wrote with all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim. [30] He sent letters to all the Jews in the hundred twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth, [31] to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had decreed, and as they had imposed upon themselves and their descendants in the matter of the fastings and their mourning. [32] The commandment of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim; and it was written in the book.

[1] Now in the twelfthH8147 month,H2320 that [is], the monthH2320 Adar,H143 on the thirteenthH7969 dayH3117 of the same, when the king’sH4428 commandmentH1697 and his decreeH1881 drew nearH5060(HiphPerf) to be put in execution,H6213(NiphInf) in the dayH3117 that the enemiesH341(QalActPtc) of the JewsH3064 hopedH7663(PielPerf) to have powerH7980(QalInf) over them, (though it was turnedH2015(NiphInf) to the contrary, that the JewsH3064 had ruleH7980(QalImpf) over them that hatedH8130(QalActPtc) them;) [2] The JewsH3064 gathered themselves togetherH6950(NiphPerf) in their citiesH5892 throughout all the provincesH4082 of the kingH4428 Ahasuerus,H325 to layH7971(QalInf) handH3027 on such as soughtH1245(PielPtc) their hurt:H7451 and no manH376 could withstandH5975(QalPerf) them;H6440 for the fearH6343 of them fellH5307(QalPerf) upon all people.H5971 [3] And all the rulersH8269 of the provinces,H4082 and the lieutenants,H323 and the deputies,H6346 and officersH6213(QalActPtc) of the king,H4428 helpedH5375(PielPtc) the Jews;H3064 because the fearH6343 of MordecaiH4782 fellH5307(QalPerf) upon them. [4] For MordecaiH4782 [was] greatH1419 in the king’sH4428 house,H1004 and his fameH8089 went outH1980(QalActPtc) throughout all the provinces:H4082 for this manH376 MordecaiH4782 waxedH1980(QalActPtc) greater and greater.H1419 [5] Thus the JewsH3064 smoteH5221(HiphImpf) all their enemiesH341(QalActPtc) with the strokeH4347 of the sword,H2719 and slaughter,H2027 and destruction,H12 and didH6213(QalImpf) what they wouldH7522 unto those that hatedH8130(QalActPtc) them. [6] And in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002 the JewsH3064 slewH2026(QalPerf) and destroyedH6(PielInf) fiveH2568 hundredH3967 men.H376 [7] And Parshandatha,H6577 and Dalphon,H1813 and Aspatha,H630 [8] And Poratha,H6334 and Adalia,H118 and Aridatha,H743 [9] And Parmashta,H6534 and Arisai,H747 and Aridai,H742 and Vajezatha,H2055 [10] The tenH6235 sonsH1121 of HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of Hammedatha,H4099 the enemyH6887(QalActPtc) of the Jews,H3064 slewH2026(QalPerf) they; but on the spoilH961 laidH7971(QalPerf) they not their hand.H3027 [11] On that dayH3117 the numberH4557 of those that were slainH2026(QalPasPtc) in ShushanH7800 the palaceH1002 was broughtH935(QalPerf) beforeH6440 the king.H4428 [12] And the kingH4428 saidH559(QalImpf) unto EstherH635 the queen,H4436 The JewsH3064 have slainH2026(QalPerf) and destroyedH6(PielInf) fiveH2568 hundredH3967 menH376 in ShushanH7800 the palace,H1002 and the tenH6235 sonsH1121 of Haman;H2001 what have they doneH6213(QalPerf) in the restH7605 of the king’sH4428 provinces?H4082 now what [is] thy petition?H7596 and it shall be grantedH5414(NiphImpf) thee: or what [is] thy requestH1246 further?H5750 and it shall be done.H6213(NiphImpf) [13] Then saidH559(QalImpf) Esther,H635 If it pleaseH2896 the king,H4428 let it be grantedH5414(NiphImpf) to the JewsH3064 which [are] in ShushanH7800 to doH6213(QalInf) to morrowH4279 also according unto this day’sH3117 decree,H1881 and let Haman’sH2001 tenH6235 sonsH1121 be hangedH8518(QalImpf) upon the gallows.H6086 [14] And the kingH4428 commandedH559(QalImpf) it so to be done:H6213(NiphInf) and the decreeH1881 was givenH5414(NiphImpf) at Shushan;H7800 and they hangedH8518(QalPerf) Haman’sH2001 tenH6235 sons.H1121 [15] For the JewsH3064 that [were] in ShushanH7800 gathered themselves togetherH6950(NiphImpf) on the fourteenthH702 dayH3117 also of the monthH2320 Adar,H143 and slewH2026(QalImpf) threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 at Shushan;H7800 but on the preyH961 they laidH7971(QalPerf) not their hand.H3027 [16] But the otherH7605 JewsH3064 that [were] in the king’sH4428 provincesH4082 gathered themselves together,H6950(NiphPerf) and stoodH5975(QalInf) for their lives,H5315 and had restH5118 from their enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and slewH2026(QalInf) of their foesH8130(QalActPtc) seventyH7657 and fiveH2568 thousand,H505 but they laidH7971(QalPerf) not their handsH3027 on the prey,H961 [17] On the thirteenthH7969 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 Adar;H143 and on the fourteenthH702 day of the same restedH5118 they, and madeH6213(QalInf) it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and gladness.H8057 [18] But the JewsH3064 that [were] at ShushanH7800 assembled togetherH6950(NiphPerf) on the thirteenthH7969 [day] thereof, and on the fourteenthH702 thereof; and on the fifteenthH2568 [day] of the same they rested,H5118 and madeH6213(QalInf) it a dayH3117 of feastingH4960 and gladness.H8057 [19] Therefore the JewsH3064 of the villages,H6521 that dweltH3427(QalActPtc) in the unwalledH6519 towns,H5892 madeH6213(QalActPtc) the fourteenthH702 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 AdarH143 [a day of] gladnessH8057 and feasting,H4960 and a goodH2896 day,H3117 and of sendingH4916 portionsH4490 oneH376 to another.H7453 [20] And MordecaiH4782 wroteH3789(QalImpf) these things,H1697 and sentH7971(QalImpf) lettersH5612 unto all the JewsH3064 that [were] in all the provincesH4082 of the kingH4428 Ahasuerus,H325 [both] nighH7138 and far,H7350 [21] To stablishH6965(PielInf) [this] among them, that they should keepH6213(QalActPtc) the fourteenthH702 dayH3117 of the monthH2320 Adar,H143 and the fifteenthH2568 dayH3117 of the same, yearly,H8141 [22] As the daysH3117 wherein the JewsH3064 restedH5117(QalPerf) from their enemies,H341(QalActPtc) and the monthH2320 which was turnedH2015(NiphPerf) unto them from sorrowH3015 to joy,H8057 and from mourningH60 into a goodH2896 day:H3117 that they should makeH6213(QalInf) them daysH3117 of feastingH4960 and joy,H8057 and of sendingH4916 portionsH4490 oneH376 to another,H7453 and giftsH4979 to the poor.H34 [23] And the JewsH3064 undertookH6901(PielPerf) to doH6213(QalInf) as they had begun,H2490(HiphPerf) and as MordecaiH4782 had writtenH3789(QalPerf) unto them; [24] Because HamanH2001 the sonH1121 of Hammedatha,H4099 the Agagite,H91 the enemyH6887(QalActPtc) of all the Jews,H3064 had devisedH2803(QalPerf) against the JewsH3064 to destroyH6(PielInf) them, and had castH5307(HiphPerf) Pur,H6332 that [is], the lot,H1486 to consumeH2000(QalInf) them, and to destroyH6(PielInf) them; [25] But when [Esther] cameH935(QalInf) beforeH6440 the king,H4428 he commandedH559(QalPerf) by lettersH5612 that his wickedH7451 device,H4284 which he devisedH2803(QalPerf) against the Jews,H3064 should returnH7725(QalImpf) upon his own head,H7218 and that he and his sonsH1121 should be hangedH8518(QalPerf) on the gallows.H6086 [26] Wherefore they calledH7121(QalPerf) these daysH3117 PurimH6332 after the nameH8034 of Pur.H6332 Therefore for all the wordsH1697 of this letter,H107 and [of that] which they had seenH7200(QalPerf) concerning this matter,H3602 and which had comeH5060(HiphPerf) unto them, [27] The JewsH3064 ordained,H6965(PielPerf) and tookH6901(PielPerf) upon them, and upon their seed,H2233 and upon all such as joinedH3867(NiphPtc) themselves unto them, so as it should not fail,H5674(QalImpf) that they would keepH6213(QalActPtc) these twoH8147 daysH3117 according to their writing,H3791 and according to their [appointed] timeH2165 every year;H8141 [28] And [that] these daysH3117 [should be] rememberedH2142(NiphPtc) and keptH6213(NiphPtc) throughoutH1755 every generation,H1755 every family,H4940 every province,H4082 and every city;H5892 and [that] these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 should not failH5674(QalImpf) from amongH8432 the Jews,H3064 nor the memorialH2143 of them perishH5486(QalImpf) from their seed.H2233 [29] Then EstherH635 the queen,H4436 the daughterH1323 of Abihail,H32 and MordecaiH4782 the Jew,H3064 wroteH3789(QalImpf) with all authority,H8633 to confirmH6965(PielInf) this secondH8145 letterH107 of Purim.H6332 [30] And he sentH7971(QalImpf) the lettersH5612 unto all the Jews,H3064 to the hundredH3967 twentyH6242 and sevenH7651 provincesH4082 of the kingdomH4438 of Ahasuerus,H325 [with] wordsH1697 of peaceH7965 and truth,H571 [31] To confirmH6965(PielInf) these daysH3117 of PurimH6332 in their timesH2165 [appointed], according as MordecaiH4782 the JewH3064 and EstherH635 the queenH4436 had enjoinedH6965(PielPerf) them, and as they had decreedH6965(PielPerf) for themselvesH5315 and for their seed,H2233 the mattersH1697 of the fastingsH6685 and their cry.H2201 [32] And the decreeH3982 of EstherH635 confirmedH6965(PielPerf) these mattersH1697 of Purim;H6332 and it was writtenH3789(NiphPtc) in the book.H5612
