Introduction

authorship, audience, history

Judges is the second of the Historical Books and covers the unsettled centuries between Joshua and the monarchy. It runs in a cycle that keeps repeating: the nation turns away, an enemy oppresses it, the people cry out, and God raises up a deliverer. Its last line explains the whole book, that everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
