[1] But after a while, in the time of wheat harvest, Samson visited his wife with a young goat. He said, “I will go in to my wife’s room.”But her father wouldn’t allow him to go in. [2] Her father said, “I most certainly thought that you utterly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Isn’t her younger sister more beautiful than she? Please, take her instead.” [3] Samson said to them, “This time I will be blameless in the case of the Philistines when I harm them.” [4] Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned tail to tail, and put a torch in the middle between every two tails. [5] When he had set the torches on fire, he let them go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, and also the olive groves. [6] Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?”They said, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” The Philistines came up, and burned her and her father with fire. [7] Samson said to them, “If you behave like this, surely I will take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.” [8] He struck them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; and he went down and lived in the cave in Etam’s rock. [9] Then the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. [10] The men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?”They said, “We have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.” [11] Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cave in Etam’s rock, and said to Samson, “Don’t you know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?”He said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.” [12] They said to him, “We have come down to bind you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.”Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not attack me yourselves.” [13] They spoke to him, saying, “No, but we will bind you securely and deliver you into their hands; but surely we will not kill you.” They bound him with two new ropes, and brought him up from the rock. [14] When he came to Lehi, the Philistines shouted as they met him. Then Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that was burned with fire; and his bands dropped from off his hands. [15] He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, put out his hand, took it, and struck a thousand men with it. [16] Samson said, “With the jawbone of a donkey, heaps on heaps; with the jawbone of a donkey I have struck a thousand men.” [17] When he had finished speaking, he threw the jawbone out of his hand; and that place was called Ramath Lehi. [18] He was very thirsty, and called on Yahweh and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of your servant; and now shall I die of thirst, and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” [19] But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi, and water came out of it. When he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived. Therefore its name was called En Hakkore, which is in Lehi, to this day. [20] He judged Israel twenty years in the days of the Philistines.

Footnotes

[1] But it came to pass within a while after,H3117 in the timeH3117 of wheatH2406 harvest,H7105 that SamsonH8123 visitedH6485(QalImpf) his wifeH802 with a kid;H1423 and he said,H559(QalImpf) I will go inH935(QalImpf) to my wifeH802 into the chamber.H2315 But her fatherH1 would not sufferH5414(QalPerf) him to go in.H935(QalInf) [2] And her fatherH1 said,H559(QalImpf) I verilyH559(QalInf) thoughtH559(QalPerf) that thou hadst utterlyH8130(QalInf) hatedH8130(QalPerf) her; therefore I gaveH5414(QalImpf) her to thy companion:H4828 [is] not her youngerH6996 sisterH269 fairerH2896 than she? take her, I pray thee, instead of her. [3] And SamsonH8123 saidH559(QalImpf) concerning them, NowH6471 shall I be more blamelessH5352(NiphPerf) than the Philistines,H6430 though I doH6213(QalActPtc) them a displeasure.H7451 [4] And SamsonH8123 wentH3212(QalImpf) and caughtH3920(QalImpf) threeH7969 hundredH3967 foxes,H7776 and tookH3947(QalImpf) firebrands,H3940 and turnedH6437(HiphImpf) tailH2180 to tail,H2180 and putH7760(QalImpf) aH259 firebrandH3940 in the midstH8432 between twoH8147 tails.H2180 [5] And when he had setH1197(HiphImpf) the brandsH3940 on fire,H784 he let [them] goH7971(PielImpf) into the standing cornH7054 of the Philistines,H6430 and burnt upH1197(HiphImpf) both the shocks,H1430 and also the standing corn,H7054 with the vineyardsH3754 [and] olives.H2132 [6] Then the PhilistinesH6430 said,H559(QalImpf) Who hath doneH6213(QalPerf) this? And they answered,H559(QalImpf) Samson,H8123 the son in lawH2860 of the Timnite,H8554 because he had takenH3947(QalPerf) his wife,H802 and givenH5414(QalImpf) her to his companion.H4828 And the PhilistinesH6430 came up,H5927(QalImpf) and burntH8313(QalImpf) her and her fatherH1 with fire.H784 [7] And SamsonH8123 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, ThoughH518 ye have doneH6213(QalImpf) this,H2063 yet will I be avengedH5358(NiphPerf) of you, and afterH310 that I will cease.H2308(QalImpf) [8] And he smoteH5221(HiphImpf) them hipH7785 andH5921 thighH3409 with a greatH1419 slaughter:H4347 and he went downH3381(QalImpf) and dweltH3427(QalImpf) in the topH5585 of the rockH5553 Etam.H5862 [9] Then the PhilistinesH6430 went up,H5927(QalImpf) and pitchedH2583(QalImpf) in Judah,H3063 and spreadH5203(NiphImpf) themselves in Lehi.H3896 [10] And the menH376 of JudahH3063 said,H559(QalImpf) Why are ye come upH5927(QalPerf) against us? And they answered,H559(QalImpf) To bindH631(QalInf) SamsonH8123 are we come up,H5927(QalPerf) to doH6213(QalInf) to him as he hath doneH6213(QalPerf) to us. [11] Then threeH7969 thousandH505 menH376 of JudahH3063 wentH3381(QalImpf) to the topH5585 of the rockH5553 Etam,H5862 and saidH559(QalImpf) to Samson,H8123 KnowestH3045(QalPerf) thou not that the PhilistinesH6430 [are] rulersH4910(QalActPtc) over us? what [is] this [that] thou hast doneH6213(QalPerf) unto us? And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, As they didH6213(QalPerf) unto me, so have I doneH6213(QalPerf) unto them. [12] And they saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, We are come downH3381(QalPerf) to bindH631(QalInf) thee, that we may deliverH5414(QalInf) thee into the handH3027 of the Philistines.H6430 And SamsonH8123 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, SwearH7650(NiphImpv) unto me, that ye will not fall uponH6293(QalImpf) me yourselves. [13] And they spakeH559(QalImpf) unto him, saying,H559(QalInf) No; but we will bindH631(QalImpf) thee fast,H631(QalInf) and deliverH5414(QalPerf) thee into their hand:H3027 but surelyH4191(HiphInf) we will not killH4191(HiphImpf) thee. And they boundH631(QalImpf) him with twoH8147 newH2319 cords,H5688 and brought him upH5927(HiphImpf) from the rock.H5553 [14] [And] when he cameH935(QalPerf) unto Lehi,H3896 the PhilistinesH6430 shoutedH7321(HiphPerf) againstH7125(QalInf) him: and the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068 came mightilyH6743(QalImpf) upon him, and the cordsH5688 that [were] upon his armsH2220 became as flaxH6593 that was burntH1197(QalPerf) with fire,H784 and his bandsH612 loosedH4549(NiphImpf) from off his hands.H3027 [15] And he foundH4672(QalImpf) a newH2961 jawboneH3895 of an ass,H2543 and put forthH7971(QalImpf) his hand,H3027 and tookH3947(QalImpf) it, and slewH5221(HiphImpf) a thousandH505 menH376 therewith. [16] And SamsonH8123 said,H559(QalImpf) With the jawboneH3895 of an ass,H2543 heapsH2565 upon heaps,H2565 with the jawH3895 of an assH2543 have I slainH5221(HiphPerf) a thousandH505 men.H376 [17] And it came to pass, when he had made an endH3615(PielInf) of speaking,H1696(PielInf) that he cast awayH7993(HiphImpf) the jawboneH3895 out of his hand,H3027 and calledH7121(QalImpf) that placeH4725 Ramathlehi.H7437 [18] And he was soreH3966 athirst,H6770(QalImpf) and calledH7121(QalImpf) on the Lord,H3068 and said,H559(QalImpf) Thou hast givenH5414(QalPerf) this greatH1419 deliveranceH8668 into the handH3027 of thy servant:H5650 and now shall I dieH4191(QalImpf) for thirst,H6772 and fallH5307(QalPerf) into the handH3027 of the uncircumcised?H6189 [19] But GodH430 claveH1234(QalImpf) an hollow placeH4388 that [was] in the jaw,H3895 and there cameH3318(QalImpf) waterH4325 thereout; and when he had drunk,H8354(QalImpf) his spiritH7307 came again,H7725(QalImpf) and he revived:H2421(QalImpf) wherefore he calledH7121(QalActPtc) the nameH8034 thereof Enhakkore,H5875 which [is] in LehiH3896 unto this day.H3117 [20] And he judgedH8199(QalImpf) IsraelH3478 in the daysH3117 of the PhilistinesH6430 twentyH6242 years.H8141
