[1] Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. [2] He came up, and told his father and his mother, saying, “I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. Now therefore get her for me as my wife.” [3] Then his father and his mother said to him, “Isn’t there a woman among your brothers’ daughters, or among all my people, that you go to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines?”Samson said to his father, “Get her for me, for she pleases me well.” [4] But his father and his mother didn’t know that it was of Yahweh; for he sought an occasion against the Philistines. Now at that time the Philistines ruled over Israel. [5] Then Samson went down to Timnah with his father and his mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah; and behold, a young lion roared at him. [6] Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he tore him as he would have torn a young goat with his bare hands, but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done. [7] He went down and talked with the woman, and she pleased Samson well. [8] After a while he returned to take her, and he went over to see the carcass of the lion; and behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. [9] He took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went. He came to his father and mother and gave to them, and they ate, but he didn’t tell them that he had taken the honey out of the lion’s body. [10] His father went down to the woman; and Samson made a feast there, for the young men used to do so. [11] When they saw him, they brought thirty companions to be with him. [12] Samson said to them, “Let me tell you a riddle now. If you can tell me the answer within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing; [13] but if you can’t tell me the answer, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothing.”They said to him, “Tell us your riddle, that we may hear it.” [14] He said to them,
“Out of the eater came out food.
Out of the strong came out sweetness.”They couldn’t in three days declare the riddle. [15] On the seventh day, they said to Samson’s wife, “Entice your husband, that he may declare to us the riddle, lest we burn you and your father’s house with fire. Have you called us to impoverish us? Isn’t that so?” [16] Samson’s wife wept before him, and said, “You just hate me, and don’t love me. You’ve told a riddle to the children of my people, and haven’t told it to me.”He said to her, “Behold, I haven’t told my father or my mother, so why should I tell you?” [17] She wept before him the seven days, while their feast lasted; and on the seventh day, he told her, because she pressed him severely; and she told the riddle to the children of her people. [18] The men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down, “What is sweeter than honey? What is stronger than a lion?”He said to them,
“If you hadn’t plowed with my heifer,
you wouldn’t have found out my riddle.” [19] Yahweh’s Spirit came mightily on him, and he went down to Ashkelon and struck thirty men of them. He took their plunder, then gave the changes of clothing to those who declared the riddle. His anger burned, and he went up to his father’s house. [20] But Samson’s wife was given to his companion, who had been his friend.

[1] And SamsonH8123 went downH3381(QalImpf) to Timnath,H8553 and sawH7200(QalImpf) a womanH802 in TimnathH8553 of the daughtersH1323 of the Philistines.H6430 [2] And he came up,H5927(QalImpf) and toldH5046(HiphImpf) his fatherH1 and his mother,H517 and said,H559(QalImpf) I have seenH7200(QalPerf) a womanH802 in TimnathH8553 of the daughtersH1323 of the Philistines:H6430 now therefore getH3947(QalImpv) her for me to wife.H802 [3] Then his fatherH1 and his motherH517 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, [Is there] neverH369 a womanH802 among the daughtersH1323 of thy brethren,H251 or among all my people,H5971 that thou goestH1980(QalActPtc) to takeH3947(QalInf) a wifeH802 of the uncircumcisedH6189 Philistines?H6430 And SamsonH8123 saidH559(QalImpf) unto his father,H1 GetH3947(QalImpv) her for me; for she pleaseth me well.H3474(QalPerf) [4] But his fatherH1 and his motherH517 knewH3045(QalPerf) not that it [was] of the Lord,H3068 that he soughtH1245(PielPtc) an occasionH8385 against the Philistines:H6430 for at that timeH6256 the PhilistinesH6430 had dominionH4910(QalActPtc) over Israel.H3478 [5] Then wentH3381 SamsonH8123 down,H3381(QalImpf) and his fatherH1 and his mother,H517 to Timnath,H8553 and cameH935(QalImpf) to the vineyardsH3754 of Timnath:H8553 and, behold, a youngH3715 lionH738 roaredH7580(QalActPtc) againstH7125(QalInf) him. [6] And the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068 came mightilyH6743(QalImpf) upon him, and he rentH8156(PielImpf) him as he would have rentH8156(PielInf) a kid,H1423 and [he had] nothingH3972 in his hand:H3027 but he toldH5046(HiphPerf) not his fatherH1 or his motherH517 what he had done.H6213(QalPerf) [7] And he went down,H3381(QalImpf) and talkedH1696(PielImpf) with the woman;H802 and she pleasedH3474 SamsonH8123 well.H3474(QalImpf) [8] And after a timeH3117 he returnedH7725(QalImpf) to takeH3947(QalInf) her, and he turned asideH5493(QalImpf) to seeH7200(QalInf) the carcaseH4658 of the lion:H738 and, behold, [there was] a swarmH5712 of beesH1682 and honeyH1706 in the carcaseH1472 of the lion.H738 [9] And he tookH7287(QalImpf) thereof in his hands,H3709 and went onH3212(QalImpf) eating,H398(QalInf) and cameH1980(QalInf) to his fatherH1 and mother,H517 and he gaveH5414(QalImpf) them, and they did eat:H398(QalImpf) but he toldH5046(HiphPerf) not them that he had takenH7287(QalPerf) the honeyH1706 out of the carcaseH1472 of the lion.H738 [10] So his fatherH1 went downH3381(QalImpf) unto the woman:H802 and SamsonH8123 madeH6213(QalImpf) there a feast;H4960 for so used the young menH970 to do.H6213(QalImpf) [11] And it came to pass, when they sawH7200(QalInf) him, that they broughtH3947(QalImpf) thirtyH7970 companionsH4828 to be with him. [12] And SamsonH8123 saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, I will now put forthH2330(QalImpf) a riddleH2420 unto you: if ye can certainlyH5046(HiphInf) declareH5046(HiphImpf) it me within the sevenH7651 daysH3117 of the feast,H4960 and find [it] out,H4672(QalPerf) then I will giveH5414(QalPerf) you thirtyH7970 sheetsH5466 and thirtyH7970 changeH2487 of garments:H899 [13] But if ye cannotH3201(QalImpf) declareH5046(HiphInf) [it] me, then shall ye giveH5414(QalPerf) me thirtyH7970 sheetsH5466 and thirtyH7970 changeH2487 of garments.H899 And they saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Put forthH2330(QalImpv) thy riddle,H2420 that we may hearH8085(QalImpf) it. [14] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, Out of the eaterH398(QalActPtc) came forthH3318(QalPerf) meat,H3978 and out of the strongH5794 came forthH3318(QalPerf) sweetness.H4966 And they couldH3201(QalPerf) not in threeH7969 daysH3117 expoundH5046(HiphInf) the riddle.H2420 [15] And it came to pass on the seventhH7637 day,H3117 that they saidH559(QalImpf) unto Samson’sH8123 wife,H802 EnticeH6601(PielImpv) thy husband,H376 that he may declareH5046(HiphImpf) unto us the riddle,H2420 lest we burnH8313(QalImpf) thee and thy father’sH1 houseH1004 with fire:H784 have ye calledH7121(QalPerf) us to take that we have?H3423(QalInf) [is it] not [so]? [16] And Samson’sH8123 wifeH802 weptH1058(QalImpf) before him, and said,H559(QalImpf) Thou dost but hateH8130(QalPerf) me, and lovestH157(QalPerf) me not: thou hast put forthH2330(QalPerf) a riddleH2420 unto the childrenH1121 of my people,H5971 and hast not toldH5046(HiphPerf) [it] me. And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto her, Behold, I have not toldH5046(HiphPerf) [it] my fatherH1 nor my mother,H517 and shall I tellH5046(HiphImpf) [it] thee? [17] And she weptH1058(QalImpf) before him the sevenH7651 days,H3117 while their feastH4960 lasted:H1961(QalPerf) and it came to pass on the seventhH7637 day,H3117 that he toldH5046(HiphImpf) her, because she lay soreH6693(HiphPerf) upon him: and she toldH5046(HiphImpf) the riddleH2420 to the childrenH1121 of her people.H5971 [18] And the menH582 of the cityH5892 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him on the seventhH7637 dayH3117 before the sunH2775 went down,H935(QalImpf) What [is] sweeterH4966 than honey?H1706 and what [is] strongerH5794 than a lion?H738 And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, IfH3884 ye had not plowedH2790(QalPerf) with my heifer,H5697 ye had not found outH4672(QalPerf) my riddle.H2420 [19] And the SpiritH7307 of the LordH3068 cameH6743(QalImpf) upon him, and he went downH3381(QalImpf) to Ashkelon,H831 and slewH5221(HiphImpf) thirtyH7970 menH376 of them, and tookH3947(QalImpf) their spoil,H2488 and gaveH5414(QalImpf) changeH2487 of garments unto them which expoundedH5046(HiphPtc) the riddle.H2420 And his angerH639 was kindled,H2734(QalImpf) and he went upH5927(QalImpf) to his father’sH1 house.H1004 [20] But Samson’sH8123 wifeH802 was [given] to his companion,H4828 whom he had used as his friend.H7462(PielPerf)
