[1] Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people who were with him, rose up early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. Midian’s camp was on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. [2] Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel brag against me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ [3] Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’ ” So twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained. [4] Yahweh said to Gideon, “There are still too many people. Bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. It shall be, that those whom I tell you, ‘This shall go with you,’ shall go with you; and whoever I tell you, ‘This shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” [5] So he brought down the people to the water; and Yahweh said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps of the water with his tongue, like a dog laps, you shall set him by himself; likewise everyone who bows down on his knees to drink.” [6] The number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people bowed down on their knees to drink water. [7] Yahweh said to Gideon, “I will save you by the three hundred men who lapped, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, each to his own place.” [8] So the people took food in their hand, and their trumpets; and he sent all the rest of the men of Israel to their own tents, but retained the three hundred men; and the camp of Midian was beneath him in the valley. [9] That same night, Yahweh said to him, “Arise, go down into the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. [10] But if you are afraid to go down, go with Purah your servant down to the camp. [11] You will hear what they say; and afterward your hands will be strengthened to go down into the camp.” Then went he down with Purah his servant to the outermost part of the armed men who were in the camp. [12] The Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like locusts for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand which is on the seashore for multitude. [13] When Gideon had come, behold, there was a man telling a dream to his fellow. He said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream; and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian, came to the tent, and struck it so that it fell, and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” [14] His fellow answered, “This is nothing other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel. God has delivered Midian into his hand, with all the army.” [15] It was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. Then he returned into the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for Yahweh has delivered the army of Midian into your hand!” [16] He divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put into the hands of all of them trumpets and empty pitchers, with torches within the pitchers. [17] He said to them, “Watch me, and do likewise. Behold, when I come to the outermost part of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so you shall do. [18] When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and shout, ‘For Yahweh and for Gideon!’ ” [19] So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outermost part of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch, when they had but newly set the watch. Then they blew the trumpets and broke in pieces the pitchers that were in their hands. [20] The three companies blew the trumpets, broke the pitchers, and held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands with which to blow; and they shouted, “The sword of Yahweh and of Gideon!” [21] They each stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran; and they shouted, and put them to flight. [22] They blew the three hundred trumpets, and Yahweh set every man’s sword against his fellow and against all the army; and the army fled as far as Beth Shittah toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. [23] The men of Israel were gathered together out of Naphtali, out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued Midian. [24] Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against Midian and take the waters before them as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan!” So all the men of Ephraim were gathered together and took the waters as far as Beth Barah, even the Jordan. [25] They took the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at Oreb’s rock, and Zeeb they killed at Zeeb’s wine press, as they pursued Midian. Then they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon beyond the Jordan.
King James Version
[1] Then Jerubbaal,H3378 who [is] Gideon,H1439 and all the peopleH5971 that [were] with him, rose up early,H7925(HiphImpf) and pitchedH2583(QalImpf) beside the well of Harod:H5878 so that the hostH4264 of the MidianitesH4080 were on the north sideH6828 of them, by the hillH1389 of Moreh,H4176 in the valley.H6010 [2] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Gideon,H1439 The peopleH5971 that [are] with thee [are] too manyH7227 for me to giveH5414(QalInf) the MidianitesH4080 into their hands,H3027 lest IsraelH3478 vauntH6286(HithImpf) themselves against me, saying,H559(QalInf) Mine own handH3027 hath savedH3467(HiphPerf) me. [3] Now therefore go to,H4994 proclaimH7121(QalImpv) in the earsH241 of the people,H5971 saying,H559(QalInf) Whosoever [is] fearfulH3373 and afraid,H2730 let him returnH7725(QalImpf) and depart earlyH6852(QalImpf) from mountH2022 Gilead.H1568 And there returnedH7725(QalImpf) of the peopleH5971 twentyH6242 and twoH8147 thousand;H505 and there remainedH7604(NiphPerf) tenH6235 thousand.H505 [4] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Gideon,H1439 The peopleH5971 [are] yet [too] many;H7227 bring them downH3381(HiphImpv) unto the water,H4325 and I will tryH6884(QalImpf) them for thee there: and it shall be, [that] of whom I sayH559(QalImpf) unto thee, This shall goH3212(QalImpf) with thee, the same shall goH3212(QalImpf) with thee; and of whomsoever I sayH559(QalImpf) unto thee, This shall not goH3212(QalImpf) with thee, the same shall not go.H3212(QalImpf) [5] So he brought downH3381(HiphImpf) the peopleH5971 unto the water:H4325 and the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Gideon,H1439 Every one that lappethH3952(QalImpf) of the waterH4325 with his tongue,H3956 as a dogH3611 lappeth,H3952(QalImpf) him shalt thou setH3322(HiphImpf) by himself; likewise every one that boweth downH3766(QalImpf) upon his kneesH1290 to drink.H8354(QalInf) [6] And the numberH4557 of them that lapped,H3952(PielPtc) [putting] their handH3027 to their mouth,H6310 were threeH7969 hundredH3967 men:H376 but all the restH3499 of the peopleH5971 bowed downH3766(QalPerf) upon their kneesH1290 to drinkH8354(QalInf) water.H4325 [7] And the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto Gideon,H1439 By the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 that lappedH3952(PielPtc) will I saveH3467(HiphImpf) you, and deliverH5414(QalPerf) the MidianitesH4080 into thine hand:H3027 and let all the [other] peopleH5971 goH3212(QalImpf) every manH376 unto his place.H4725 [8] So the peopleH5971 tookH3947(QalImpf) victualsH6720 in their hand,H3027 and their trumpets:H7782 and he sentH7971(PielPerf) allH376 [the rest of] IsraelH3478 every manH376 unto his tent,H168 and retainedH2388(HiphPerf) those threeH7969 hundredH3967 men:H376 and the hostH4264 of MidianH4080 was beneath him in the valley.H6010 [9] And it came to pass the same night,H3915 that the LordH3068 saidH559(QalImpf) unto him, Arise,H6965(QalImpv) get thee downH3381(QalImpv) unto the host;H4264 for I have deliveredH5414(QalPerf) it into thine hand.H3027 [10] But if thou fearH3373 to go down,H3381(QalInf) goH3381 thou with PhurahH6513 thy servantH5288 downH3381(QalImpv) to the host:H4264 [11] And thou shalt hearH8085(QalPerf) what they say;H1696(PielImpf) and afterwardH310 shall thine handsH3027 be strengthenedH2388(QalImpf) to go downH3381(QalPerf) unto the host.H4264 Then went he downH3381(QalImpf) with PhurahH6513 his servantH5288 unto the outsideH7097 of the armed menH2571 that [were] in the host.H4264 [12] And the MidianitesH4080 and the AmalekitesH6002 and all the childrenH1121 of the eastH6924 layH5307(QalActPtc) along in the valleyH6010 like grasshoppersH697 for multitude;H7230 and their camelsH1581 [were] without number,H4557 as the sandH2344 by the seaH3220 sideH8193 for multitude.H7230 [13] And when GideonH1439 was come,H935(QalImpf) behold, [there was] a manH376 that toldH5608(PielPtc) a dreamH2472 unto his fellow,H7453 and said,H559(QalImpf) Behold, I dreamedH2492(QalPerf) a dream,H2472 and, lo, a cakeH6742(Qere) of barleyH8184 breadH3899 tumbledH2015(HithPtc) into the hostH4264 of Midian,H4080 and cameH935(QalImpf) unto a tent,H168 and smoteH5221(HiphImpf) it that it fell,H5307(QalImpf) and overturnedH2015(QalImpf) it, that the tentH168 lay along.H5307(QalPerf) [14] And his fellowH7453 answeredH6030(QalImpf) and said,H559(QalImpf) This [is] nothing else save the swordH2719 of GideonH1439 the sonH1121 of Joash,H3101 a manH376 of Israel:H3478 [for] into his handH3027 hath GodH430 deliveredH5414(QalPerf) Midian,H4080 and all the host.H4264 [15] And it was [so], when GideonH1439 heardH8085(QalInf) the tellingH4557 of the dream,H2472 and the interpretationH7667 thereof, that he worshipped,H7812(HithImpf) and returnedH7725(QalImpf) into the hostH4264 of Israel,H3478 and said,H559(QalImpf) Arise;H6965(QalImpv) for the LordH3068 hath deliveredH5414(QalPerf) into your handH3027 the hostH4264 of Midian.H4080 [16] And he dividedH2673(QalImpf) the threeH7969 hundredH3967 menH376 [into] threeH7969 companies,H7218 and he putH5414(QalImpf) a trumpetH7782 in every man’s hand,H3027 with emptyH7386 pitchers,H3537 and lampsH3940 withinH8432 the pitchers.H3537 [17] And he saidH559(QalImpf) unto them, LookH7200(QalImpf) on me, and doH6213(QalImpf) likewise: and, behold, when I comeH935(QalActPtc) to the outsideH7097 of the camp,H4264 it shall be [that], as I do,H6213(QalImpf) so shall ye do.H6213(QalImpf) [18] When I blowH8628(QalPerf) with a trumpet,H7782 I and all that [are] with me, then blowH8628(QalPerf) ye the trumpetsH7782 also on every sideH5439 of all the camp,H4264 and say,H559(QalPerf) [The sword] of the Lord,H3068 and of Gideon.H1439 [19] So Gideon,H1439 and the hundredH3967 menH376 that [were] with him, cameH935(QalImpf) unto the outsideH7097 of the campH4264 in the beginningH7218 of the middleH8484 watch;H821 and they had butH389 newlyH6965(HiphInf) setH6965(HiphPerf) the watch:H8104(QalActPtc) and they blewH8628(QalImpf) the trumpets,H7782 and brakeH5310(QalInf) the pitchersH3537 that [were] in their hands.H3027 [20] And the threeH7969 companiesH7218 blewH8628(QalImpf) the trumpets,H7782 and brakeH7665(QalImpf) the pitchers,H3537 and heldH2388(HiphImpf) the lampsH3940 in their leftH8040 hands,H3027 and the trumpetsH7782 in their rightH3225 handsH3027 to blowH8628(QalInf) [withal]: and they cried,H7121(QalImpf) The swordH2719 of the Lord,H3068 and of Gideon.H1439 [21] And they stoodH5975(QalImpf) every manH376 in his place round aboutH5439 the camp:H4264 and all the hostH4264 ran,H7323(QalImpf) and cried,H7321(HiphImpf) and fled.H5127(QalImpf/Qere) [22] And the threeH7969 hundredH3967 blewH8628(QalImpf) the trumpets,H7782 and the LordH3068 setH7760(QalImpf) every man’sH376 swordH2719 against his fellow,H7453 even throughout all the host:H4264 and the hostH4264 fledH5127(QalImpf) to BethshittahH1029 in Zererath,H6888 [and] to the borderH8193 of Abelmeholah,H65 unto Tabbath.H2888 [23] And the menH376 of IsraelH3478 gathered themselves togetherH6817(NiphImpf) out of Naphtali,H5321 and out of Asher,H836 and out of all Manasseh,H4519 and pursuedH7291(QalImpf) afterH310 the Midianites.H4080 [24] And GideonH1439 sentH7971(QalPerf) messengersH4397 throughout all mountH2022 Ephraim,H669 saying,H559(QalInf) Come downH3381(QalImpv) againstH7125(QalInf) the Midianites,H4080 and takeH3920(QalImpv) before them the watersH4325 unto BethbarahH1012 and Jordan.H3383 Then all the menH376 of EphraimH669 gathered themselves together,H6817(NiphImpf) and tookH3920(QalImpf) the watersH4325 unto BethbarahH1012 and Jordan.H3383 [25] And they tookH3920(QalImpf) twoH8147 princesH8269 of the Midianites,H4080 OrebH6159 and Zeeb;H2062 and they slewH2026(QalImpf) OrebH6159 upon the rockH6697 Oreb,H6159 and ZeebH2062 they slewH2026(QalPerf) at the winepressH3342 of Zeeb,H2062 and pursuedH7291(QalImpf) Midian,H4080 and broughtH935(HiphPerf) the headsH7218 of OrebH6159 and ZeebH2062 to GideonH1439 on the other sideH5676 Jordan.H3383
