[1] Now you shall gather yourself in troops,
daughter of troops.
He has laid siege against us.
They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.
[2] But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
being small among the clans of Judah,
out of you one will come out to me who is to be ruler in Israel;
whose goings out are from of old, from ancient times.
[3] Therefore he will abandon them until the time that she who is in labor gives birth.
Then the rest of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.
[4] He shall stand, and shall shepherd in the strength of Yahweh,
in the majesty of the name of Yahweh his God.
They will live, for then he will be great to the ends of the earth.
[5] He will be our peace when Assyria invades our land
and when he marches through our fortresses,
then we will raise against him seven shepherds,
and eight leaders of men.
[6] They will rule the land of Assyria with the sword,
and the land of Nimrod in its gates.
He will deliver us from the Assyrian,
when he invades our land,
and when he marches within our border.
[7] The remnant of Jacob will be among many peoples
like dew from Yahweh,
like showers on the grass,
that don’t wait for man
nor wait for the sons of men.
[8] The remnant of Jacob will be among the nations,
among many peoples,
like a lion among the animals of the forest,
like a young lion among the flocks of sheep;
who, if he goes through, treads down and tears in pieces,
and there is no one to deliver.
[9] Let your hand be lifted up above your adversaries,
and let all of your enemies be cut off.
[10] “It will happen in that day”, says Yahweh,
“that I will cut off your horses from among you
and will destroy your chariots.
[11] I will cut off the cities of your land
and will tear down all your strongholds.
[12] I will destroy witchcraft from your hand.
You shall have no soothsayers.
[13] I will cut off your engraved images and your pillars from among you;
and you shall no more worship the work of your hands.
[14] I will uproot your Asherah poles from among you;
and I will destroy your cities.
[15] I will execute vengeance in anger
and wrath on the nations that didn’t listen.”

Little Town of Beth-lehem
[2] But thou, Beth-lehem H1035 Ephratah, H672 though thou be little H6810 among the thousands H505 of Judah, H3063 yet out of thee shall he come forth H3318 (QalImpf) unto me that is to be ruler H4910 (QalActPtc) in Israel; H3478 whose goings forth H4163 have been from of old, H6924 from everlasting. H3117§ [3] Therefore will he give them up, H5414 (QalImpf) until the time H6256 that she which travaileth H3205 (QalActPtc) hath brought forth: H3205 (QalPerf) then the remnant H3499 of his brethren H251 shall return H7725 (QalImpf) unto the children H1121 of Israel. H3478 [4] And he shall stand H5975 (QalPerf) and feed H7462 (QalPerf)§ in the strength H5797 of the Lord, H3068 in the majesty H1347 of the name H8034 of the Lord H3068 his God; H430 and they shall abide: H3427 (QalPerf) for now shall he be great H1431 (QalImpf) unto the ends H657 of the earth. H776 [5] And this man shall be the peace, H7965 when the Assyrian H804 shall come H935 (QalImpf) into our land: H776 and when he shall tread H1869 (QalImpf) in our palaces, H759 then shall we raise H6965 (HiphPerf) against him seven H7651 shepherds, H7462 (QalActPtc) and eight H8083 principal H5257 men. H120§ [6] And they shall waste H7462 (QalPerf)§ the land H776 of Assyria H804 with the sword, H2719§ and the land H776 of Nimrod H5248 in the entrances H6607 thereof: thus shall he deliver H5337 (HiphPerf) us from the Assyrian, H804 when he cometh H935 (QalImpf) into our land, H776 and when he treadeth H1869 (QalImpf) within our borders. H1366 [7] And the remnant H7611 of Jacob H3290 shall be in the midst H7130 of many H7227 people H5971 as a dew H2919 from the Lord, H3068 as the showers H7241 upon the grass, H6212 that tarrieth H6960 (PielImpf) not for man, H376 nor waiteth H3176 (PielImpf) for the sons H1121 of men. H120 [8] And the remnant H7611 of Jacob H3290 shall be among the Gentiles H1471 in the midst H7130 of many H7227 people H5971 as a lion H738 among the beasts H929 of the forest, H3293 as a young lion H3715 among the flocks H5739 of sheep: H6629§ who, if he go through, H5674 (QalPerf) both treadeth down, H7429 (QalPerf) and teareth in pieces, H2963 (QalPerf) and none can deliver. H5337 (HiphPtc) [9] Thine hand H3027 shall be lifted up H7311 (QalImpf) upon thine adversaries, H6862 and all thine enemies H341 (QalActPtc) shall be cut off. H3772 (NiphImpf) [10] And it shall come to pass in that day, H3117 saith H5002 (QalPasPtc) the Lord, H3068 that I will cut off H3772 (HiphPerf) thy horses H5483 out of the midst H7130 of thee, and I will destroy H6 (HiphPerf) thy chariots: H4818 [11] and I will cut off H3772 (HiphPerf) the cities H6145 (Ketiv) of thy land, H776 and throw down H2040 (QalPerf) all thy strong holds: H4013 [12] and I will cut off H3772 (HiphPerf) witchcrafts H3785 out of thine hand; H3027 and thou shalt have no more soothsayers: H6049 (PoelPtc) [13] thy graven images H6456 also will I cut off, H3772 (HiphPerf) and thy standing images H4676§ out of the midst H7130 of thee; and thou shalt no more worship H7812 (HithImpf) the work H4639 of thine hands. H3027 [14] And I will pluck up H5428 (QalPerf) thy groves H842 out of the midst H7130 of thee: so will I destroy H8045 (HiphPerf) thy cities. H6145 (Ketiv)§ [15] And I will execute H6213 (QalPerf) vengeance H5359 in anger H639 and fury H2534 upon the heathen, H1471 such as they have not heard. H8085 (QalPerf)Footnotes
