[1] Misery is mine!
Indeed, I am like one who gathers the summer fruits, as gleanings of the vineyard.
There is no cluster of grapes to eat.
My soul desires to eat the early fig.
[2] The godly man has perished out of the earth,
and there is no one upright among men.
They all lie in wait for blood;
every man hunts his brother with a net.
[3] Their hands are on that which is evil to do it diligently.
The ruler and judge ask for a bribe.
The powerful man dictates the evil desire of his soul.
Thus they conspire together.
[4] The best of them is like a brier.
The most upright is worse than a thorn hedge.
The day of your watchmen,
even your visitation, has come;
now is the time of their confusion.
[5] Don’t trust in a neighbor.
Don’t put confidence in a friend.
With the woman lying in your embrace,
be careful of the words of your mouth!
[6] For the son dishonors the father,
the daughter rises up against her mother,
the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
[7] But as for me, I will look to Yahweh.
I will wait for the God of my salvation.
My God will hear me.
[8] Don’t rejoice against me, my enemy.
When I fall, I will arise.
When I sit in darkness, Yahweh will be a light to me.
[9] I will bear the indignation of Yahweh,
because I have sinned against him,
until he pleads my case and executes judgment for me.
He will bring me out to the light.
I will see his righteousness.
[10] Then my enemy will see it,
and shame will cover her who said to me,
“Where is Yahweh your God?”
My eyes will see her.
Now she will be trodden down like the mire of the streets.
[11] A day to build your walls!
In that day, he will extend your boundary.
[12] In that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,
and from Egypt even to the River,
and from sea to sea,
and mountain to mountain.
[13] Yet the land will be desolate because of those who dwell therein,
for the fruit of their doings.
[14] Shepherd your people with your staff,
the flock of your heritage,
who dwell by themselves in a forest.
Let them feed in the middle of fertile pasture land,
in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.
[15] “As in the days of your coming out of the land of Egypt,
I will show them marvelous things.”
[16] The nations will see and be ashamed of all their might.
They will lay their hand on their mouth.
Their ears will be deaf.
[17] They will lick the dust like a serpent.
Like crawling things of the earth, they will come trembling out of their dens.
They will come with fear to Yahweh our God,
and will be afraid because of you.
[18] Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity,
and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage?
He doesn’t retain his anger forever,
because he delights in loving kindness.
[19] He will again have compassion on us.
He will tread our iniquities under foot.
You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
[20] You will give truth to Jacob,
and mercy to Abraham,
as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.
King James Version
[1] WoeH480 is me! for I am as when they have gatheredH625 the summer fruits,H7019 as the grapegleaningsH5955 of the vintage:H1210 [there is] no clusterH811 to eat:H398(QalInf) my soulH5315 desiredH183(PielPerf) the firstripe fruit.H1063 [2] The goodH2623 [man] is perishedH6(QalPerf) out of the earth:H776 and [there is] none uprightH3477 among men:H120 they all lie in waitH693(QalImpf) for blood;H1818 they huntH6679(QalImpf) every manH376 his brotherH251 with a net.H2764 [3] That they may do evilH7451 with both handsH3709 earnestly,H3190(HiphInf) the princeH8269 asketh,H7592(QalActPtc) and the judgeH8199(QalActPtc) [asketh] for a reward;H7966 and the greatH1419 [man], he utterethH1696(QalActPtc) his mischievousH1942 desire:H5315 so they wrap it up.H5686(PielImpf) [4] The bestH2896 of them [is] as a brier:H2312 the most uprightH3477 [is sharper] than a thorn hedge:H4534 the dayH3117 of thy watchmenH6822(PielPtc) [and] thy visitationH6486 cometh;H935(QalPerf) now shall be their perplexity.H3998 [5] TrustH539(HiphImpf) ye not in a friend,H7453 put ye not confidenceH982(QalImpf) in a guide:H441 keepH8104(QalImpv) the doorsH6607 of thy mouthH6310 from her that liethH7901(QalActPtc) in thy bosom.H2436 [6] For the sonH1121 dishonourethH5034(PielPtc) the father,H1 the daughterH1323 riseth upH6965(QalPtc) against her mother,H517 the daughter in lawH3618 against her mother in law;H2545 a man’sH376 enemiesH341(QalActPtc) [are] the menH582 of his own house.H1004 [7] Therefore I will lookH6822(PielImpf) unto the Lord;H3068 I will waitH3176(HiphImpf) for the GodH430 of my salvation:H3468 my GodH430 will hearH8085(QalImpf) me. [8] RejoiceH8055(QalImpf) not against me, O mine enemy:H341(QalActPtc) when I fall,H5307(QalPerf) I shall arise;H6965(QalPerf) when I sitH3427(QalImpf) in darkness,H2822 the LordH3068 [shall be] a lightH216 unto me. [9] I will bearH5375(QalImpf) the indignationH2197 of the Lord,H3068 because I have sinnedH2398(QalPerf) against him, until he pleadH7378(QalImpf) my cause,H7379 and executeH6213(QalPerf) judgmentH4941 for me: he will bring me forthH3318(HiphImpf) to the light,H216 [and] I shall beholdH7200(QalImpf) his righteousness.H6666 [10] Then [she that is] mine enemyH341(QalActPtc) shall seeH7200(QalImpf) [it], and shameH955 shall coverH3680(PielImpf) her which saidH559(QalActPtc) unto me, Where is the LordH3068 thy God?H430 mine eyesH5869 shall beholdH7200(QalImpf) her: now shall she be trodden downH4823 as the mireH2916 of the streets.H2351 [11] [In] the dayH3117 that thy wallsH1447 are to be built,H1129(QalInf) [in] that dayH3117 shall the decreeH2706 be far removed.H7368(QalImpf) [12] [In] that dayH3117 [also] he shall comeH935(QalImpf) even to thee from Assyria,H804 and [from] the fortifiedH4693 cities,H5892 and from the fortressH4693 even to the river,H5104 and from seaH3220 to sea,H3220 and [from] mountainH2022 to mountain.H2022 [13] Notwithstanding the landH776 shall be desolateH8077 because of them that dwellH3427(QalActPtc) therein, for the fruitH6529 of their doings.H4611 [14] FeedH7462(QalImpv) thy peopleH5971 with thy rod,H7626 the flockH6629 of thine heritage,H5159 which dwellH7931(QalActPtc) solitarilyH910 [in] the wood,H3293 in the midstH8432 of Carmel:H3760 let them feedH7462(QalImpf) [in] BashanH1316 and Gilead,H1568 as in the daysH3117 of old.H5769 [15] According to the daysH3117 of thy comingH3318(QalInf) out of the landH776 of EgyptH4714 will I shewH7200(HiphImpf) unto him marvellousH6381(NiphPtc) [things]. [16] The nationsH1471 shall seeH7200(QalImpf) and be confoundedH954(QalImpf) at all their might:H1369 they shall layH7760(QalImpf) [their] handH3027 upon [their] mouth,H6310 their earsH241 shall be deaf.H2790(QalImpf) [17] They shall lickH3897(PielImpf) the dustH6083 like a serpent,H5175 they shall moveH7264(QalImpf) out of their holesH4526 like wormsH2119(QalPtc) of the earth:H776 they shall be afraidH6342(QalImpf) of the LordH3068 our God,H430 and shall fearH3372(QalImpf) because of thee. [18] Who [is] a GodH410 like unto thee, that pardonethH5375(QalActPtc) iniquity,H5771 and passeth byH5674(QalActPtc) the transgressionH6588 of the remnantH7611 of his heritage?H5159 he retainethH2388(HiphPerf) not his angerH639 for ever,H5703 because he delightethH2654(QalPerf) [in] mercy.H2617 [19] He will turn again,H7725(QalImpf) he will have compassionH7355(PielImpf) upon us; he will subdueH3533(QalImpf) our iniquities;H5771 and thou wilt castH7993(HiphImpf) all their sinsH2403 into the depthsH4688 of the sea.H3220 [20] Thou wilt performH5414(QalImpf) the truthH571 to Jacob,H3290 [and] the mercyH2617 to Abraham,H85 which thou hast swornH7650(NiphPerf) unto our fathersH1 from the daysH3117 of old.H6924
