The author wrote in Greek in Alexandria, probably between 100 BC and AD 50, though the book speaks in Solomon's voice throughout. The first half argues that the souls of the righteous are in God's hand and that death is not the end of them; the second retells the exodus as a lesson in how wisdom governs history. Its case against idol worship covers ground a reader of Romans 1 will recognize.
