Jonah 1 (WEBP)
[1] Now Yahweh’s° word came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
[2] “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.”
[3] But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid its fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Yahweh.
[4] But Yahweh sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty storm on the sea, so that the ship was likely to break up.
[5] Then the mariners were afraid, and every man cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the ship and he was laying down, and was fast asleep.
[6] So the ship master came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God!§ Maybe your God§ will notice us, so that we won’t perish.”
[7] They all said to each other, “Come! Let’s cast lots, that we may know who is responsible for this evil that is on us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
[8] Then they asked him, “Tell us, please, for whose cause this evil is on us. What is your occupation? Where do you come from? What is your country? Of what people are you?”
[9] He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God§ of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.”
[10] Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “What have you done?” For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of Yahweh, because he had told them.
[11] Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm to us?” For the sea grew more and more stormy.
[12] He said to them, “Take me up, and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will be calm for you; for I know that because of me this great storm is on you.”
[13] Nevertheless the men rowed hard to get them back to the land; but they could not, for the sea grew more and more stormy against them.
[14] Therefore they cried to Yahweh, and said, “We beg you, Yahweh, we beg you, don’t let us die for this man’s life, and don’t lay on us innocent blood; for you, Yahweh, have done as it pleased you.”
[15] So they took up Jonah and threw him into the sea; and the sea ceased its raging.
[16] Then the men feared Yahweh exceedingly; and they offered a sacrifice to Yahweh and made vows.
[17] Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Jonah 1 (KJVS)
[1] Now the word H1697 of the LORD H3068 came unto Jonah H3124 the son H1121 of Amittai H573, saying H559 (8800),
[2] Arise H6965 (8798), go H3212 (8798) to Nineveh H5210, that great H1419 city H5892, and cry H7121 (8798) against it; for their wickedness H7451 is come up H5927 (8804) before H6440 me.
[3] But Jonah H3124 rose up H6965 (8799) to flee H1272 (8800) unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the LORD H3068, and went down H3381 (8799) to Joppa H3305; and he found H4672 (8799) a ship H591 going H935 (8802) to Tarshish H8659: so he paid H5414 (8799) the fare H7939 thereof, and went down H3381 (8799) into it, to go H935 (8800) with them unto Tarshish H8659 from the presence H6440 of the LORD H3068.
[4] But the LORD H3068 sent out H2904 (8689) a great H1419 wind H7307 into the sea H3220, and there was a mighty H1419 tempest H5591 in the sea H3220, so that the ship H591 was like H2803 (8765) to be broken H7665 (8736).
[5] Then the mariners H4419 were afraid H3372 (8799), and cried H2199 (8799) every man H376 unto his god H430, and cast forth H2904 (8686) the wares H3627 that [were] in the ship H591 into the sea H3220, to lighten H7043 (8687) [it] of them. But Jonah H3124 was gone down H3381 (8804) into the sides H3411 of the ship H5600; and he lay H7901 (8799), and was fast asleep H7290 (8735).
[6] So the shipmaster H7227 H2259 came H7126 (8799) to him, and said H559 (8799) unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper H7290 (8737)? arise H6965 (8798), call H7121 (8798) upon thy God H430, if so be that God H430 will think H6245 (8691) upon us, that we perish H6 (8799) not.
[7] And they said H559 (8799) every one H376 to his fellow H7453, Come H3212 (8798), and let us cast H5307 (8686) lots H1486, that we may know H3045 (8799) for whose cause H7945 this evil H7451 [is] upon us. So they cast H5307 (8686) lots H1486, and the lot H1486 fell H5307 (8799) upon Jonah H3124.
[8] Then said H559 (8799) they unto him, Tell H5046 (8685) us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil H7451 [is] upon us; What [is] thine occupation H4399? and whence H370 comest H935 (8799) thou? what [is] thy country H776? and of what people H5971 [art] thou?
[9] And he said H559 (8799) unto them, I [am] an Hebrew H5680; and I fear H3373 the LORD H3068, the God H430 of heaven H8064, which hath made H6213 (8804) the sea H3220 and the dry H3004 [land].
[10] Then were the men H582 exceedingly H1419 H3374 afraid H3372 (8799), and said H559 (8799) unto him, Why hast thou done H6213 (8804) this? For the men H582 knew H3045 (8804) that he fled H1272 (8802) from the presence H6440 of the LORD H3068, because he had told H5046 (8689) them.
[11] Then said H559 (8799) they unto him, What shall we do H6213 (8799) unto thee, that the sea H3220 may be calm H8367 (8799) unto us? for the sea H3220 wrought H1980 (8802), and was tempestuous H5590 (8802).
[12] And he said H559 (8799) unto them, Take me up H5375 (8798), and cast me forth H2904 (8685) into the sea H3220; so shall the sea H3220 be calm H8367 (8799) unto you: for I know H3045 (8802) that for my sake H7945 this great H1419 tempest H5591 [is] upon you.
[13] Nevertheless the men H582 rowed hard H2864 (8799) to bring H7725 (8687) [it] to the land H3004; but they could H3201 (8804) not: for the sea H3220 wrought H1980 (8802), and was tempestuous H5590 (8802) against them.
[14] Wherefore they cried H7121 (8799) unto the LORD H3068, and said H559 (8799), We beseech thee H577, O LORD H3068, we beseech thee, let us not perish H6 (8799) for this man’s H376 life H5315, and lay H5414 (8799) not upon us innocent H5355 (8675) H5355 blood H1818: for thou, O LORD H3068, hast done H6213 (8804) as it pleased H2654 (8804) thee.
[15] So they took up H5375 (8799) Jonah H3124, and cast him forth H2904 (8686) into the sea H3220: and the sea H3220 ceased H5975 (8799) from her raging H2197.
[16] Then the men H582 feared H3372 (8799) the LORD H3068 exceedingly H1419 H3374, and offered H2076 (8799) a sacrifice H2077 unto the LORD H3068, and made H5087 (8799) vows H5088.
[17] Now the LORD H3068 had prepared H4487 (8762) a great H1419 fish H1709 to swallow up H1104 (8800) Jonah H3124. And Jonah H3124 was in the belly H4578 of the fish H1709 three H7969 days H3117 and three H7969 nights H3915.

Jonah 1 (YLT)
[1] And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jonah son of Amittai, saying:
[2] ‘Rise, go unto Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against it that their wickedness hath come up before Me.’
[3] And Jonah riseth to flee to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah, and goeth down to Joppa, and findeth a ship going to Tarshish, and he giveth its fare, and goeth down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah.
[4] And Jehovah hath cast a great wind on the sea, and there is a great tempest in the sea, and the ship hath reckoned to be broken;
[5] and the mariners are afraid, and cry each unto his god, and cast the goods that are in the ship into the sea, to make it light of them; and Jonah hath gone down unto the sides of the vessel, and he lieth down, and is fast asleep.
[6] And the chief of the company draweth near to him, and saith to him, ‘What-to thee, O sleeper? rise, call unto thy God, it may be God doth bethink himself of us, and we do not perish.’
[7] And they say each unto his neighbour, ‘Come, and we cast lots, and we know on whose account this evil is on us.’ And they cast lots, and the lot falleth on Jonah.
[8] And they say unto him, ‘Declare to us, we pray thee, on what account this evil is on us? what is thine occupation, and whence comest thou? what is thy country, seeing thou art not of this people?’
[9] And he saith unto them, ‘A Hebrew I am, and Jehovah, God of the heavens, I am reverencing, who made the sea and the dry land.’
[10] And the men fear a great fear, and say unto him, ‘What is this thou hast done!’ for the men have known that from the face of Jehovah he is fleeing, for he hath told them.
[11] And they say unto him, ‘What do we do to thee that the sea may cease from us, for the sea is more and more tempestuous?’
[12] And he saith unto them, ‘Lift me up, and cast me into the sea, and the sea doth cease from you; for I know that on my account this great tempest is upon you.’
[13] And the men row to turn back unto the dry land, and are not able, for the sea is more and more tempestuous against them.
[14] And they cry unto Jehovah, and say, ‘We pray Thee, O Jehovah, let us not, we pray Thee, perish for this man’s life, and do not lay on us innocent blood, for Thou, Jehovah, as Thou hast pleased, Thou hast done.’
[15] And they lift up Jonah, and cast him into the sea, and the sea ceaseth from its raging;
[16] and the men fear Jehovah-a great fear, and sacrifice a sacrifice to Jehovah, and vow vows.
[17] And Jehovah appointeth a great fish to swallow up Jonah, and Jonah is in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.
