Joshua said to them, “Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Be strong and courageous, for Yahweh will do this to all your enemies against whom you fight.”

και ειπεν προς αυτους ιησους μη φοβηθητε αυτους μηδε δειλιασητε ανδριζεσθε και ισχυετε οτι ουτως ποιησει κυριος πασι τοις εχθροις υμων ους υμεις καταπολεμειτε αυτους

Yahweh said to Joshua, “Don’t be afraid because of them; for tomorrow at this time, I will deliver them up all slain before Israel. You shall hamstring their horses and burn their chariots with fire.”

Joshua did to them as Yahweh told him. He hamstrung their horses and burned their chariots with fire.

Joshua said to them, “If you are a numerous people, go up to the forest, and clear land for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.”

They spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, “Yahweh commanded through Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with their pasture lands for our livestock.”

The children of Israel heard this, “Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar along the border of the land of Canaan, in the region around the Jordan, on the side that belongs to the children of Israel.”

They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying,

“The whole congregation of Yahweh says, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away today from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel today against Yahweh?

ταδε λεγει πασα η συναγωγη κυριου τις η πλημμελεια αυτη ην επλημμελησατε εναντιον του θεου ισραηλ αποστραφηναι σημερον απο κυριου οικοδομησαντες υμιν εαυτοις βωμον αποστατας υμας γενεσθαι απο κυριου

“If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, “What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel?

and if we have not rather done H6213 (QalPerf) it for fear H1674 of this thing, H1697 saying, H559 (QalInf) In time to come^§ H4279 your children H1121 might speak H559 (QalImpf) unto our children, H1121 saying, H559 (QalInf) What have ye to do with the Lord H3068 God H430 of Israel? H3478

Joshua 22:24 Heb. tomorrow

αλλ ενεκεν ευλαβειας ρηματος εποιησαμεν τουτο λεγοντες ινα μη ειπωσιν αυριον τα τεκνα υμων τοις τεκνοις ημων τι υμιν κυριω τω θεω ισραηλ

“Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice;

“Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of Yahweh’s altar, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.” ’

Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of Yahweh’s hand.”

και ειπεν φινεες ο ιερευς τοις υιοις ρουβην και τοις υιοις γαδ και τω ημισει φυλης μανασση σημερον εγνωκαμεν οτι μεθ ημων κυριος διοτι ουκ επλημμελησατε εναντιον κυριου πλημμελειαν και οτι ερρυσασθε τους υιους ισραηλ εκ χειρος κυριου

The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived.

Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said to them, “I am old and well advanced in years.

The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve Yahweh.”

The people said to Joshua, “We will serve Yahweh our God, and we will listen to his voice.”

After the death of Joshua, the children of Israel asked of Yahweh,^§ saying, “Who should go up for us first against the Canaanites, to fight against them?”

Judges 1:1 “Yahweh” is God’s proper Name, sometimes rendered “Lord” (all caps) in other translations.

Yahweh said, “Judah shall go up. Behold,^§ I have delivered the land into his hand.”

Judges 1:2 “Behold”, from “הִנֵּה”, means look at, take notice, observe, see, or gaze at. It is often used as an interjection.

και ανεβη αγγελος κυριου απο γαλγαλ επι τον κλαυθμωνα και επι βαιθηλ και επι τον οικον ισραηλ και ειπεν προς αυτους κυριος κυριος ανεβιβασεν υμας εξ αιγυπτου και εισηγαγεν υμας εις την γην ην ωμοσεν τοις πατρασιν υμων του δουναι υμιν και ειπεν υμιν ου διασκεδασω την διαθηκην μου την μεθ υμων εις τον αιωνα

Therefore I also said, ‘I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be in your sides, and their gods will be a snare to you.’ ”

και εγω ειπα ου προσθησω του μετοικισαι τον λαον ον ειπα του εξολεθρευσαι αυτους εκ προσωπου υμων και εσονται υμιν εις συνοχας και οι θεοι αυτων εσονται υμιν εις σκανδαλον

Yahweh’s anger burned against Israel; and he said, “Because this nation transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not listened to my voice,
