When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, “It may be that Joseph will hate us, and will fully pay us back for all the evil which we did to him.”

‘You shall tell Joseph, “Now please forgive the disobedience of your brothers, and their sin, because they did evil to you.”’ Now, please forgive the disobedience of the servants of the God of your father.” Joseph wept when they spoke to him.

Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for am I in the place of God?

και ειπεν αυτοις ιωσηφ μη φοβεισθε του γαρ θεου ειμι εγω

Come, let’s deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us, and escape out of the land.”

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women aren’t like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,° and said, “Because I drew him out of the water.”

Exodus 2:10 “Moses” sounds like the Hebrew for “draw out”.

αδρυνθεντος δε του παιδιου εισηγαγεν αυτο προς την θυγατερα φαραω και εγενηθη αυτη εις υιον επωνομασεν δε το ονομα αυτου μωυσην λεγουσα εκ του υδατος αυτον ανειλομην

He looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no one, he killed the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

She bore a son, and he named him Gershom,° for he said, “I have lived as a foreigner in a foreign land.”

ως δε ειδεν κυριος οτι προσαγει ιδειν εκαλεσεν αυτον κυριος εκ του βατου λεγων μωυση μωυση ο δε ειπεν τι εστιν

He said, “Don’t come close. Take off your sandals, for the place you are standing on is holy ground.”

Yahweh said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.

ειπεν δε κυριος προς μωυσην ιδων ειδον την κακωσιν του λαου μου του εν αιγυπτω και της κραυγης αυτων ακηκοα απο των εργοδιωκτων οιδα γαρ την οδυνην αυτων

Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

και ειπεν μωυσης προς τον θεον τις ειμι οτι πορευσομαι προς φαραω βασιλεα αιγυπτου και οτι εξαξω τους υιους ισραηλ εκ γης αιγυπτου

He said, “Certainly I will be with you. This will be the token to you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

ειπεν δε ο θεος μωυσει λεγων οτι εσομαι μετα σου και τουτο σοι το σημειον οτι εγω σε εξαποστελλω εν τω εξαγαγειν σε τον λαον μου εξ αιγυπτου και λατρευσετε τω θεω εν τω ορει τουτω

I know that the king of Egypt won’t give you permission to go, no, not by a mighty hand.

εγω δε οιδα οτι ου προησεται υμας φαραω βασιλευς αιγυπτου πορευθηναι εαν μη μετα χειρος κραταιας

I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and it will happen that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed.

And I will give H5414 (QalPerf) this people H5971 favour H2580 in the sight H5869 of the Egyptians: H4714 and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, H3212 (QalImpf) ye shall not go H3212 (QalImpf) empty: H7387

Moses answered, “But, behold, they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice; for they will say, ‘Yahweh has not appeared to you.’”

“This is so that they may believe that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”

ινα πιστευσωσιν σοι οτι ωπται σοι κυριος ο θεος των πατερων αυτων θεος αβρααμ και θεος ισαακ και θεος ιακωβ

Moses said to Yahweh, “O Lord,^§ I am not eloquent, neither before now, nor since you have spoken to your servant; for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”

Exodus 4:10 The word translated “Lord” is “Adonai”.

Yahweh’s anger burned against Moses, and he said, “What about Aaron, your brother, the Levite? I know that he can speak well. Also, behold, he is coming out to meet you. When he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.

Yahweh said to Moses in Midian, “Go, return into Egypt; for all the men who sought your life are dead.”

The people believed, and when they heard that Yahweh had visited the children of Israel, and that he had seen their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished.’”

αυτοι υμεις πορευομενοι συλλεγετε εαυτοις αχυρα οθεν εαν ευρητε ου γαρ αφαιρειται απο της συνταξεως υμων ουθεν

Yahweh said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”

και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην ηδη οψει α ποιησω τω φαραω εν γαρ χειρι κραταια εξαποστελει αυτους και εν βραχιονι υψηλω εκβαλει αυτους εκ της γης αυτου

I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God; and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

and I will take H3947 (QalPerf) you to me for a people, H5971 and I will be to you a God: H430 and ye shall know H3045 (QalPerf) that I am the Lord H3068 your God, H430 which bringeth H3318 (HiphPtc) you out from under the burdens H5450 of the Egyptians. H4714

και λημψομαι εμαυτω υμας λαον εμοι και εσομαι υμων θεος και γνωσεσθε οτι εγω κυριος ο θεος υμων ο εξαγαγων υμας εκ της καταδυναστειας των αιγυπτιων

The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand on Egypt, and bring the children of Israel out from among them.”

“When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Perform a miracle!’ then you shall tell Aaron, ‘Take your rod, and cast it down before Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.’”

Yahweh says, “In this you shall know that I am Yahweh. Behold: I will strike with the rod that is in my hand on the waters which are in the river, and they shall be turned to blood.

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 In this thou shalt know H3045 (QalImpf) that I am the Lord: H3068 behold, I will smite H5221 (HiphPtc) with the rod H4294 that is in mine hand H3027 upon the waters H4325 which are in the river, H2975 and they shall be turned H2015 (NiphPerf) to blood. ταδε λεγει κυριος εν τουτω γνωση οτι εγω κυριος ιδου εγω τυπτω τη ραβδω τη εν τη χειρι μου επι το υδωρ το εν τω ποταμω και μεταβαλει εις αιμα

All the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink; for they couldn’t drink the river water.

ωρυξαν δε παντες οι αιγυπτιοι κυκλω του ποταμου ωστε πιειν υδωρ και ουκ ηδυναντο πιειν υδωρ απο του ποταμου

Pharaoh said, “Tomorrow.” Moses said, “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that there is no one like Yahweh our God.

But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened his heart, and didn’t listen to them, as Yahweh had spoken.

I will set apart in that day the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, to the end you may know that I am Yahweh on the earth.

Moses said, “It isn’t appropriate to do so; for we shall sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians to Yahweh our God. Behold, if we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes, won’t they stone us?

And Moses H4872 said, H559 (QalImpf) It is not meet H3559 (NiphPtc) so to do; H6213 (QalInf) for H2005 we shall sacrifice H2076 (QalImpf) the abomination H8441 of the Egyptians H4714 to the Lord H3068 our God: H430 lo, shall we sacrifice H2076 (QalImpf) the abomination H8441 of the Egyptians H4714 before their eyes, H5869 and will they not stone H5619 (QalImpf) us?

For if you refuse to let them go, and hold them still,

ει μεν ουν μη βουλει εξαποστειλαι τον λαον μου αλλ ετι εγκρατεις αυτου

The magicians couldn’t stand before Moses because of the boils; for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.

και ουκ ηδυναντο οι φαρμακοι στηναι εναντιον μωυση δια τα ελκη εγενετο γαρ τα ελκη εν τοις φαρμακοις και εν παση γη αιγυπτου

For this time I will send all my plagues against your heart, against your officials, and against your people; that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth.

εν τω γαρ νυν καιρω εγω εξαποστελλω παντα τα συναντηματα μου εις την καρδιαν σου και των θεραποντων σου και του λαου σου ιν ειδης οτι ουκ εστιν ως εγω αλλος εν παση τη γη

For now I would have stretched out my hand, and struck you and your people with pestilence, and you would have been cut off from the earth;

For now I will stretch out H7971 (QalPerf) my hand, H3027 that I may smite H5221 (HiphImpf) thee and thy people H5971 with pestilence; H1698 and thou shalt be cut off H3582 (NiphImpf) from the earth. H776

νυν γαρ αποστειλας την χειρα παταξω σε και τον λαον σου θανατω και εκτριβηση απο της γης

Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, and there will not be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh’s.

ειπεν δε αυτω μωυσης ως αν εξελθω την πολιν εκπετασω τας χειρας μου προς κυριον και αι φωναι παυσονται και η χαλαζα και ο υετος ουκ εσται ετι ινα γνως οτι του κυριου η γη

But as for you and your servants, I know that you don’t yet fear Yahweh God.”

και συ και οι θεραποντες σου επισταμαι οτι ουδεπω πεφοβησθε τον κυριον

The flax and the barley were struck, for the barley had ripened and the flax was blooming.

το δε λινον και η κριθη επληγη η γαρ κριθη παρεστηκυια το δε λινον σπερματιζον

But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they had not grown up.

Yahweh said to Moses, “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the heart of his servants, that I may show these my signs among them;

οπως διηγησησθε εις τα ωτα των τεκνων υμων και τοις τεκνοις των τεκνων υμων οσα εμπεπαιχα τοις αιγυπτιοις και τα σημεια μου α εποιησα εν αυτοις και γνωσεσθε οτι εγω κυριος

Or else, if you refuse to let my people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country,

Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the men go, that they may serve Yahweh, their God. Don’t you yet know that Egypt is destroyed?”

και λεγουσιν οι θεραποντες φαραω προς αυτον εως τινος εσται τουτο ημιν σκωλον εξαποστειλον τους ανθρωπους οπως λατρευσωσιν τω θεω αυτων η ειδεναι βουλει οτι απολωλεν αιγυπτος
