Numbers 35 (WEBP)

[1] Yahweh spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying,
[2] “Command the children of Israel to give to the Levites cities to dwell in out of their inheritance. You shall give pasture lands for the cities around them to the Levites.
[3] They shall have the cities to dwell in. Their pasture lands shall be for their livestock, and for their possessions, and for all their animals.
[4] “The pasture lands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward one thousand cubits° around it.
[5] You shall measure outside of the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall be the pasture lands of their cities.
[6] “The cities which you shall give to the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which you shall give for the man slayer to flee to. Besides them you shall give forty-two cities.
[7] All the cities which you shall give to the Levites shall be forty-eight cities together with their pasture lands.
[8] Concerning the cities which you shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many you shall take many, and from the few you shall take few. Everyone according to his inheritance which he inherits shall give some of his cities to the Levites.”
[9] Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,
[10] “Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, ‘When you pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
[11] then you shall appoint for yourselves cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the man slayer who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.
[12] The cities shall be for your refuge from the avenger, that the man slayer not die until he stands before the congregation for judgment.
[13] The cities which you shall give shall be for you six cities of refuge.
[14] You shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and you shall give three cities in the land of Canaan. They shall be cities of refuge.
[15] These six cities shall be refuge for the children of Israel, for the stranger, and for the foreigner living among them, that everyone who kills any person unwittingly may flee there.
[16] “ ‘But if he struck him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.
[17] If he struck him with a stone in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.
[18] Or if he struck him with a weapon of wood in the hand, by which a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer. The murderer shall surely be put to death.
[19] The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death. When he meets him, he shall put him to death.
[20] If he shoved him out of hatred, or hurled something at him while lying in wait, so that he died,
[21] or in hostility struck him with his hand, so that he died, he who struck him shall surely be put to death. He is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him.
[22] “ ‘But if he shoved him suddenly without hostility, or hurled on him anything without lying in wait,
[23] or with any stone, by which a man may die, not seeing him, and cast it on him so that he died, and he was not his enemy and not seeking his harm,
[24] then the congregation shall judge between the striker and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances.
[25] The congregation shall deliver the man slayer out of the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge, where he had fled. He shall dwell therein until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.
[26] “ ‘But if the man slayer shall at any time go beyond the border of his city of refuge where he flees,
[27] and the avenger of blood finds him outside of the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the man slayer, he shall not be guilty of blood,
[28] because he should have remained in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest. But after the death of the high priest, the man slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
[29] “ ‘These things shall be for a statute and ordinance to you throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
[30] “ ‘Whoever kills any person, the murderer shall be slain based on the testimony of witnesses; but one witness shall not testify alone against any person so that he dies.
[31] “ ‘Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death. He shall surely be put to death.
[32] “ ‘You shall take no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may come again to dwell in the land before the death of the priest.
[33] “ ‘So you shall not pollute the land where you live; for blood pollutes the land. No atonement can be made for the land for the blood that is shed in it, but by the blood of him who shed it.
[34] You shall not defile the land which you inhabit, where I dwell; for I, Yahweh, dwell among the children of Israel.’ ”

[1] And the LORD H3068 spake H1696 (8762) unto Moses H4872 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 by Jordan H3383 [near] Jericho H3405, saying H559 (8800),
[2] Command H6680 (8761) the children H1121 of Israel H3478, that they give H5414 (8804) unto the Levites H3881 of the inheritance H5159 of their possession H272 cities H5892 to dwell in H3427 (8800); and ye shall give H5414 (8799) [also] unto the Levites H3881 suburbs H4054 for the cities H5892 round about H5439 them.
[3] And the cities H5892 shall they have to dwell in H3427 (8800); and the suburbs H4054 of them shall be for their cattle H929, and for their goods H7399, and for all their beasts H2416.
[4] And the suburbs H4054 of the cities H5892, which ye shall give H5414 (8799) unto the Levites H3881, [shall reach] from the wall H7023 of the city H5892 and outward H2351 a thousand H505 cubits H520 round about H5439.
[5] And ye shall measure H4058 (8804) from without H2351 the city H5892 on the east H6924 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520, and on the south H5045 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520, and on the west H3220 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520, and on the north H6828 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520; and the city H5892 [shall be] in the midst H8432: this shall be to them the suburbs H4054 of the cities H5892.
[6] And among the cities H5892 which ye shall give H5414 (8799) unto the Levites H3881 [there shall be] six H8337 cities H5892 for refuge H4733, which ye shall appoint H5414 (8799) for the manslayer H7523 (8802), that he may flee H5127 (8800) thither: and to them ye shall add H5414 (8799) forty H705 and two H8147 cities H5892.
[7] [So] all the cities H5892 which ye shall give H5414 (8799) to the Levites H3881 [shall be] forty H705 and eight H8083 cities H5892: them [shall ye give] with their suburbs H4054.
[8] And the cities H5892 which ye shall give H5414 (8799) [shall be] of the possession H272 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478: from [them that have] many H7227 ye shall give many H7235 (8686); but from [them that have] few H4592 ye shall give few H4591 (8686): every one H376 shall give H5414 (8799) of his cities H5892 unto the Levites H3881 according H6310 to his inheritance H5159 which he inheriteth H5157 (8799).
[9] And the LORD H3068 spake H1696 (8762) unto Moses H4872, saying H559 (8800),
[10] Speak H1696 (8761) unto the children H1121 of Israel H3478, and say H559 (8804) unto them, When ye be come over H5674 (8802) Jordan H3383 into the land H776 of Canaan H3667;
[11] Then ye shall appoint H7136 (8689) you cities H5892 to be cities H5892 of refuge H4733 for you; that the slayer H7523 (8802) may flee H5127 (8804) thither, which killeth H5221 (8688) any person H5315 at unawares H7684.
[12] And they shall be unto you cities H5892 for refuge H4733 from the avenger H1350 (8802); that the manslayer H7523 (8802) die H4191 (8799) not, until he stand H5975 (8800) before H6440 the congregation H5712 in judgment H4941.
[13] And of these cities H5892 which ye shall give H5414 (8799) six H8337 cities H5892 shall ye have for refuge H4733.
[14] Ye shall give H5414 (8799) three H7969 cities H5892 on this side H5676 Jordan H3383, and three H7969 cities H5892 shall ye give H5414 (8799) in the land H776 of Canaan H3667, [which] shall be cities H5892 of refuge H4733.
[15] These six H8337 cities H5892 shall be a refuge H4733, [both] for the children H1121 of Israel H3478, and for the stranger H1616, and for the sojourner H8453 among H8432 them: that every one that killeth H5221 (8688) any person H5315 unawares H7684 may flee H5127 (8800) thither.
[16] And if he smite H5221 (8689) him with an instrument H3627 of iron H1270, so that he die H4191 (8799), he [is] a murderer H7523 (8802): the murderer H7523 (8802) shall surely H4191 (8800) be put to death H4191 (8714).
[17] And if he smite H5221 (8689) him with throwing H3027 a stone H68, wherewith he may die H4191 (8799), and he die H4191 (8799), he [is] a murderer H7523 (8802): the murderer H7523 (8802) shall surely H4191 (8800) be put to death H4191 (8714).
[18] Or [if] he smite H5221 (8689) him with an hand H3027 weapon H3627 of wood H6086, wherewith he may die H4191 (8799), and he die H4191 (8799), he [is] a murderer H7523 (8802): the murderer H7523 (8802) shall surely H4191 (8800) be put to death H4191 (8714).
[19] The revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818 himself shall slay H4191 (8686) the murderer H7523 (8802): when he meeteth H6293 (8800) him, he H1931 shall slay H4191 (8686) him.
[20] But if he thrust H1920 (8799) him of hatred H8135, or hurl H7993 (8689) at him by laying of wait H6660, that he die H4191 (8799);
[21] Or in enmity H342 smite H5221 (8689) him with his hand H3027, that he die H4191 (8799): he that smote H5221 (8688) [him] shall surely H4191 (8800) be put to death H4191 (8714); [for] he [is] a murderer H7523 (8802): the revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818 shall slay H4191 (8686) the murderer H7523 (8802), when he meeteth H6293 (8800) him.
[22] But if he thrust H1920 (8804) him suddenly H6621 without H3808 enmity H342, or have cast H7993 (8689) upon him any thing H3627 without laying of wait H6660,
[23] Or with any stone H68, wherewith a man may die H4191 (8799), seeing H7200 (8800) [him] not H3808, and cast H5307 (8686) [it] upon him, that he die H4191 (8799), and [was] not his enemy H341 (8802), neither sought H1245 (8764) his harm H7451:
[24] Then the congregation H5712 shall judge H8199 (8804) between the slayer H5221 (8688) and the revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818 according to these judgments H4941:
[25] And the congregation H5712 shall deliver H5337 (8689) the slayer H7523 (8802) out of the hand H3027 of the revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818, and the congregation H5712 shall restore H7725 (8689) him to the city H5892 of his refuge H4733, whither he was fled H5127 (8804): and he shall abide H3427 (8804) in it unto the death H4194 of the high H1419 priest H3548, which was anointed H4886 (8804) with the holy H6944 oil H8081.
[26] But if the slayer H7523 (8802) shall at any time H3318 (8800) come H3318 (8799) without the border H1366 of the city H5892 of his refuge H4733, whither he was fled H5127 (8799);
[27] And the revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818 find H4672 (8804) him without H2351 the borders H1366 of the city H5892 of his refuge H4733, and the revenger H1350 (8802) of blood H1818 kill H7523 (8804) the slayer H7523 (8802); he shall not be guilty of blood H1818:
[28] Because he should have remained H3427 (8799) in the city H5892 of his refuge H4733 until the death H4194 of the high H1419 priest H3548: but after H310 the death H4194 of the high H1419 priest H3548 the slayer H7523 (8802) shall return H7725 (8799) into the land H776 of his possession H272.
[29] So these [things] shall be for a statute H2708 of judgment H4941 unto you throughout your generations H1755 in all your dwellings H4186.
[30] Whoso killeth H5221 (8688) any person H5315, the murderer H7523 (8802) shall be put to death H7523 (8799) by the mouth H6310 of witnesses H5707: but one H259 witness H5707 shall not testify H6030 (8799) against any person H5315 [to cause him] to die H4191 (8800).
[31] Moreover ye shall take H3947 (8799) no satisfaction H3724 for the life H5315 of a murderer H7523 (8802), which [is] guilty H7563 of death H4191 (8800): but he shall be surely H4191 (8800) put to death H4191 (8714).
[32] And ye shall take H3947 (8799) no satisfaction H3724 for him that is fled H5127 (8800) to the city H5892 of his refuge H4733, that he should come again H7725 (8800) to dwell H3427 (8800) in the land H776, until the death H4194 of the priest H3548.
[33] So ye shall not pollute H2610 (8686) the land H776 wherein ye [are]: for blood H1818 it defileth H2610 (8686) the land H776: and the land H776 cannot be cleansed H3722 (8792) of the blood H1818 that is shed H8210 (8795) therein, but by the blood H1818 of him that shed H8210 (8802) it.
[34] Defile H2930 (8762) not therefore the land H776 which ye shall inhabit H3427 (8802), wherein H8432 I dwell H7931 (8802): for I the LORD H3068 dwell H7931 (8802) among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel H3478.

Young’s Literal Translation

Numbers 35 (YLT)

[1] And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, in the plains of Moab, by Jordan, near Jericho, saying,
[2] ‘Command the sons of Israel, and they have given to the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to inhabit; also a suburb for the cities round about them ye do give to the Levites.
[3] And the cities have been to them to inhabit, and their suburbs are for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.
[4] ‘And the suburbs of the cities which ye give to the Levites are, from the wall of the city and without, a thousand cubits round about.
[5] And ye have measured from the outside of the city, the east quarter, two thousand by the cubit, and the south quarter, two thousand by the cubit, and the west quarter, two thousand by the cubit, and the north quarter, two thousand by the cubit; and the city is in the midst; this is to them the suburbs of the cities.
[6] ‘And the cities which ye give to the Levites are the six cities of refuge, which ye give for the fleeing thither of the man-slayer, and besides them ye give forty and two cities;
[7] all the cities which ye give to the Levites are forty and eight cities, them and their suburbs.
[8] And the cities which ye give are of the possession of the sons of Israel, from the many ye multiply, and from the few ye diminish; each, according to his inheritance which they inherit, doth give of his cities to the Levites.’
[9] And Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,
[10] ‘Speak unto the sons of Israel, and thou hast said unto them, When ye are passing over the Jordan to the land of Canaan,
[11] and have prepared to yourselves cities-cities of refuge they are to you-then fled thither hath a man-slayer, smiting a person unawares,
[12] and the cities have been to you for a refuge from the redeemer, and the man-slayer doth not die till his standing before the company for judgment.
[13] ‘As to the cities which ye give-six are cities of refuge to you;
[14] the three of the cities ye give beyond the Jordan, and the three of the cities ye give in the land of Canaan; cities of refuge they are.
[15] To sons of Israel, and to a sojourner, and to a settler in their midst, are these six cities for a refuge, for the fleeing thither of any one smiting a person unawares.
[16] ‘And if with an instrument of iron he hath smitten him, and he dieth, he is a murderer: the murderer is certainly put to death.
[17] ‘And if with a stone in the hand, wherewith he dieth, he hath smitten him, and he dieth, he is a murderer: the murderer is certainly put to death.
[18] ‘Or with a wooden instrument in the hand, wherewith he dieth, he hath smitten him, and he dieth, he is a murderer: the murderer is certainly put to death.
[19] ‘The redeemer of blood himself doth put the murderer to death; in his coming against him he doth put him to death.
[20] ‘And if in hatred he thrust him through, or hath cast anything at him by lying in wait, and he dieth;
[21] or in enmity he hath smitten him with his hand, and he dieth; the smiter is certainly put to death; he is a murderer; the redeemer of blood doth put the murderer to death in his coming against him.
[22] ‘And if, in an instant, without enmity, he hath thrust him through, or hath cast at him any instrument, without lying in wait;
[23] or with any stone wherewith he dieth, without seeing, and causeth it to fall upon him, and he dieth, and he is not his enemy, nor seeking his evil;
[24] then have the company judged between the smiter and the redeemer of blood, by these judgments.
[25] ‘And the company have delivered the man-slayer out of the hand of the redeemer of blood, and the company have caused him to turn back unto the city of his refuge, whither he hath fled, and he hath dwelt in it till the death of the chief priest, who hath been anointed with the holy oil.
[26] ‘And if the man-slayer at all go out from the border of the city of his refuge whither he fleeth,
[27] and the redeemer of blood hath found him at the outside of the border of the city of his refuge, and the redeemer of blood hath slain the man-slayer, blood is not for him;
[28] for in the city of his refuge he doth dwell till the death of the chief priest; and after the death of the chief priest doth the man-slayer turn back unto the city of his possession.
[29] ‘And these things have been to you for a statute of judgment to your generations, in all your dwellings:
[30] whoso smiteth a person, by the mouth of witnesses doth one slay the murderer; and one witness doth not testify against a person-to die.
[31] ‘And ye take no atonement for the life of a murderer who is condemned-to die, for he is certainly put to death;
[32] and ye take no atonement for him to flee unto the city of his refuge, to turn back to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
[33] ‘And ye profane not the land which ye are in, for blood profaneth the land; as to the land, it is not pardoned for blood which is shed in it except by the blood of him who sheddeth it;
[34] and ye defile not the land in which ye are dwelling, in the midst of which I do tabernacle, for I Jehovah do tabernacle in the midst of the sons of Israel.’
