“Yahweh says, ‘Don’t deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us;” for they will not depart.

Moreover Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, “How have I sinned against you, against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison?

Now where are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, ‘The king of Babylon will not come against you, nor against this land’?

Shephatiah the son of Mattan, Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying,

^[45:1] και ηκουσεν σαφατιας υιος μαθαν και γοδολιας υιος πασχωρ και ιωαχαλ υιος σελεμιου τους λογους ους ελαλει ιερεμιας επι τον λαον λεγων

“Yahweh says, ‘He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live. He will escape with his life and he will live.’

^[45:2] ουτως ειπεν κυριος ο κατοικων εν τη πολει ταυτη αποθανειται εν ρομφαια και εν λιμω και ο εκπορευομενος προς τους χαλδαιους ζησεται και εσται η ψυχη αυτου εις ευρεμα και ζησεται

Yahweh says, ‘This city will surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he will take it.’ ”

Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 This city H5892 shall surely H5414 (NiphInf) be given H5414 (NiphImpf) into the hand H3027 of the king H4428 of Babylon’s H894 army, H2428 which shall take H3920 (QalPerf) it.

^[45:3] οτι ουτως ειπεν κυριος παραδιδομενη παραδοθησεται η πολις αυτη εις χειρας δυναμεως βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και συλλημψεται αυτην

Then the princes said to the king, “Please let this man be put to death, because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them; for this man doesn’t seek the welfare of this people, but harm.”

Jeremiah 38:4 Heb. peace

^[45:4] και ειπαν τω βασιλει αναιρεθητω δη ο ανθρωπος εκεινος οτι αυτος εκλυει τας χειρας των ανθρωπων των πολεμουντων των καταλειπομενων εν τη πολει και τας χειρας παντος του λαου λαλων προς αυτους κατα τους λογους τουτους οτι ο ανθρωπος ουτος ου χρησμολογει ειρηνην τω λαω τουτω αλλ η πονηρα

Zedekiah the king said, “Behold, he is in your hand; for the king can’t do anything to oppose you.”

Then Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 said, H559 (QalImpf) Behold, he is in your hand: H3027 for the king H4428 is not he that can H3201 (QalImpf) do any thing H1697 against you.

^[45:5] και ειπεν ο βασιλευς ιδου αυτος εν χερσιν υμων οτι ουκ ηδυνατο ο βασιλευς προς αυτους

Ebedmelech went out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying,

^[45:8] και εξηλθεν προς αυτον και ελαλησεν προς τον βασιλεα και ειπεν

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies.”

Jeremiah 38:10 Heb. in thine hand

^[45:10] και ενετειλατο ο βασιλευς τω αβδεμελεχ λεγων λαβε εις τας χειρας σου εντευθεν τριακοντα ανθρωπους και αναγαγε αυτον εκ του λακκου ινα μη αποθανη

Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, “Now put these rags and worn-out garments under your armpits under the cords.” Jeremiah did so.

And Ebed-melech H5663 the Ethiopian H3569 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jeremiah, H3414 Put H7760 (QalImpv) now these old H1094 cast clouts H5499 and rotten rags H4418 under thine armholes H679 H3027 under the cords. H2256 And Jeremiah H3414 did H6213 (QalImpf) so.

^[45:12] και ειπεν ταυτα θες υποκατω των σχοινιων και εποιησεν ιερεμιας ουτως

Then Zedekiah the king sent and took Jeremiah the prophet to himself into the third entry that is in Yahweh’s house. Then the king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me.”

Jeremiah 38:14 Or, principal

^[45:14] και απεστειλεν ο βασιλευς και εκαλεσεν αυτον προς εαυτον εις οικιαν ασελισι την εν οικω κυριου και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ερωτησω σε λογον και μη δη κρυψης απ εμου ρημα

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? If I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.”

^[45:15] και ειπεν ιερεμιας τω βασιλει εαν αναγγειλω σοι ουχι θανατω με θανατωσεις και εαν συμβουλευσω σοι ου μη ακουσης μου

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, “As Yahweh lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.”

^[45:16] και ωμοσεν αυτω ο βασιλευς λεγων ζη κυριος ος εποιησεν ημιν την ψυχην ταυτην ει αποκτενω σε και ει δωσω σε εις χειρας των ανθρωπων τουτων

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you will go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul will live, and this city will not be burned with fire. You will live, along with your house.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Jeremiah H3414 unto Zedekiah, H6667 Thus saith H559 (QalPerf) the Lord, H3068 the God H430 of hosts, H6635 the God H430 of Israel; H3478 If thou wilt assuredly H3318 (QalInf) go forth H3318 (QalImpf) unto the king H4428 of Babylon’s H894 princes, H8269 then thy soul H5315 shall live, H2421 (QalPerf) and this city H5892 shall not be burned H8313 (NiphImpf) with fire; H784 and thou shalt live, H2421 (QalPerf) and thine house: H1004

^[45:17] και ειπεν αυτω ιερεμιας ουτως ειπεν κυριος εαν εξελθων εξελθης προς ηγεμονας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και ζησεται η ψυχη σου και η πολις αυτη ου μη κατακαυθη εν πυρι και ζηση συ και η οικια σου

Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.”

And Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jeremiah, H3414 I am afraid H1672 (QalActPtc) of the Jews H3064 that are fallen H5307 (QalPerf) to the Chaldeans, H3778 lest they deliver H5414 (QalImpf) me into their hand, H3027 and they mock H5953 (HithPerf) me.

^[45:19] και ειπεν ο βασιλευς τω ιερεμια εγω λογον εχω των ιουδαιων των πεφευγοτων προς τους χαλδαιους μη δωσειν με εις χειρας αυτων και καταμωκησονται μου

But Jeremiah said, “They won’t deliver you. Obey, I beg you, Yahweh’s voice, in that which I speak to you; so it will be well with you, and your soul will live.

But Jeremiah H3414 said, H559 (QalImpf) They shall not deliver H5414 (QalImpf) thee. Obey, H8085 (QalImpv) I beseech thee, the voice H6963 of the Lord, H3068 which I speak H1696 (QalActPtc) unto thee: so it shall be well H3190 (QalImpf) unto thee, and thy soul H5315 shall live. H2421 (QalImpf)

^[45:20] και ειπεν ιερεμιας ου μη παραδωσιν σε ακουσον τον λογον κυριου ον εγω λεγω προς σε και βελτιον εσται σοι και ζησεται η ψυχη σου

‘Behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house will be brought out to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women will say, “Your familiar friends have turned on you, and have prevailed over you. Your feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned away from you.”

and, behold, all the women H802 that are left H7604 (NiphPerf) in the king H4428 of Judah’s H3063 house H1004 shall be brought forth H3318 (HophPtc) to the king H4428 of Babylon’s H894 princes, H8269 and those women shall say, H559 (QalActPtc) Thy friends^§ H582 H7965 have set thee on, H5496 (HiphPerf) and have prevailed H3201 (QalPerf) against thee: thy feet H7272 are sunk H2883 (HophPerf) in the mire, H1206 and they are turned away H5472 (NiphPerf) back. Jeremiah 38:22 Heb. men of thy peace

^[45:22] και ιδου πασαι αι γυναικες αι καταλειφθεισαι εν οικια βασιλεως ιουδα εξηγοντο προς αρχοντας βασιλεως βαβυλωνος και αυται ελεγον ηπατησαν σε και δυνησονται σοι ανδρες ειρηνικοι σου και καταλυσουσιν εν ολισθημασιν ποδας σου απεστρεψαν απο σου

Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “Let no man know of these words, and you won’t die.

Then said H559 (QalImpf) Zedekiah H6667 unto Jeremiah, H3414 Let no man H376 know H3045 (QalImpf) of these words, H1697 and thou shalt not die. H4191 (QalImpf)

^[45:24] και ειπεν αυτω ο βασιλευς ανθρωπος μη γνωτω εκ των λογων τουτων και συ ου μη αποθανης

But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, ‘Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don’t hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also tell us what the king said to you;’

But if the princes H8269 hear H8085 (QalImpf) that I have talked H1696 (PielPerf) with thee, and they come H935 (QalPerf) unto thee, and say H559 (QalPerf) unto thee, Declare H5046 (HiphImpv) unto us now what thou hast said H1696 (PielPerf) unto the king, H4428 hide H3582 (PielImpf) it not from us, and we will not put thee to death; H4191 (HiphImpf) also what the king H4428 said H1696 (PielPerf) unto thee:

^[45:25] και εαν ακουσωσιν οι αρχοντες οτι ελαλησα σοι και ελθωσιν προς σε και ειπωσιν σοι αναγγειλον ημιν τι ελαλησεν σοι ο βασιλευς μη κρυψης αφ ημων και ου μη ανελωμεν σε και τι ελαλησεν προς σε ο βασιλευς

then you shall tell them, ‘I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there.’ ”

then thou shalt say H559 (QalPerf) unto them, I presented H5307 (HiphPtc) my supplication H8467 before H6440 the king, H4428 that he would not cause me to return H7725 (HiphInf) to Jonathan’s H3083 house, H1004 to die H4191 (QalInf) there.

^[45:26] και ερεις αυτοις ριπτω εγω το ελεος μου κατ οφθαλμους του βασιλεως προς το μη αποστρεψαι με εις οικιαν ιωναθαν αποθανειν εκει

Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon commanded Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard concerning Jeremiah, saying,

Now Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah while he was shut up in the court of the guard, saying,

^[46:15] και προς ιερεμιαν εγενετο λογος κυριου εν τη αυλη της φυλακης λεγων

“Go, and speak to Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, ‘Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: “Behold, I will bring my words on this city for evil, and not for good; and they will be accomplished before you in that day.

^[46:16] πορευου και ειπον προς αβδεμελεχ τον αιθιοπα ουτως ειπεν κυριος ο θεος ισραηλ ιδου εγω φερω τους λογους μου επι την πολιν ταυτην εις κακα και ουκ εις αγαθα

The captain of the guard took Jeremiah and said to him, “Yahweh your God pronounced this evil on this place;

And the captain H7227 of the guard H2876 took H3947 (QalImpf) Jeremiah, H3414 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, The Lord H3068 thy God H430 hath pronounced H1696 (PielPerf) this evil H7451 upon this place. H4725

^[47:2] και ελαβεν αυτον ο αρχιμαγειρος και ειπεν αυτω κυριος ο θεος σου ελαλησεν τα κακα ταυτα επι τον τοπον τουτον

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

Jeremiah 40:9 Heb. to stand before. And so verse 10

^[47:9] και ωμοσεν αυτοις γοδολιας και τοις ανδρασιν αυτων λεγων μη φοβηθητε απο προσωπου των παιδων των χαλδαιων κατοικησατε εν τη γη και εργασασθε τω βασιλει βαβυλωνος και βελτιον εσται υμιν

and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam didn’t believe them.

Jeremiah 40:14 Heb. to strike thee in soul?

^[47:14] και ειπαν αυτω ει γνωσει γινωσκεις οτι βελισα βασιλευς υιων αμμων απεστειλεν προς σε τον ισμαηλ παταξαι σου ψυχην και ουκ επιστευσεν αυτοις γοδολιας

Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, “Please let me go, and I will kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man will know it. Why should he take your life, that all the Jews who are gathered to you should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish?”

^[47:15] και ιωαναν ειπεν τω γοδολια κρυφαιως εν μασσηφα πορευσομαι δη και παταξω τον ισμαηλ και μηθεις γνωτω μη παταξη σου ψυχην και διασπαρη πας ιουδα οι συνηγμενοι προς σε και απολουνται οι καταλοιποι ιουδα

But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you speak falsely of Ishmael.”

^[47:16] και ειπεν γοδολιας προς ιωαναν μη ποιησης το πραγμα τουτο οτι ψευδη συ λεγεις περι ισμαηλ

Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went, and as he met them, he said to them, “Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.”

But ten men were found among those who said to Ishmael, “Don’t kill us; for we have stores hidden in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey.” So he stopped, and didn’t kill them among their brothers.

^[48:8] και δεκα ανδρες ευρεθησαν εκει και ειπαν τω ισμαηλ μη ανελης ημας οτι εισιν ημιν θησαυροι εν αγρω πυροι και κριθαι μελι και ελαιον και παρηλθεν και ουκ ανειλεν αυτους εν μεσω των αδελφων αυτων

and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please let our supplication be presented before you, and pray for us to Yahweh your God, even for all this remnant, for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes see us,

^[49:2] προς ιερεμιαν τον προφητην και ειπαν αυτω πεσετω δη το ελεος ημων κατα προσωπον σου και προσευξαι προς κυριον τον θεον σου περι των καταλοιπων τουτων οτι κατελειφθημεν ολιγοι απο πολλων καθως οι οφθαλμοι σου βλεπουσιν

Then Jeremiah the prophet said to them, “I have heard you. Behold, I will pray to Yahweh your God according to your words; and it will happen that whatever thing Yahweh answers you, I will declare it to you. I will keep nothing back from you.”

^[49:4] και ειπεν αυτοις ιερεμιας ηκουσα ιδου εγω προσευξομαι προς κυριον τον θεον ημων κατα τους λογους υμων και εσται ο λογος ον αν αποκριθησεται κυριος αναγγελω υμιν ου μη κρυψω αφ υμων ρημα

Then they said to Jeremiah, “May Yahweh be a true and faithful witness among us, if we don’t do according to all the word with which Yahweh your God sends you to tell us.

^[49:5] και αυτοι ειπαν τω ιερεμια εστω κυριος εν ημιν εις μαρτυρα δικαιον και πιστον ει μη κατα παντα τον λογον ον αν αποστειλη σε κυριος προς ημας ουτως ποιησομεν

and said to them, “Yahweh, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your supplication before him, says:

^[49:9] και ειπεν αυτοις ουτως ειπεν κυριος

“ ‘But if you say, “We will not dwell in this land,” so that you don’t obey Yahweh your God’s voice,

^[49:13] και ει λεγετε υμεις ου μη καθισωμεν εν τη γη ταυτη προς το μη ακουσαι φωνης κυριου

saying, “No, but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we will see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there we will dwell;” ’

now therefore hear Yahweh’s word, O remnant of Judah! Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says, ‘If you indeed set your faces to enter into Egypt, and go to live there,

^[49:15] δια τουτο ακουσατε λογον κυριου ουτως ειπεν κυριος εαν υμεις δωτε το προσωπον υμων εις αιγυπτον και εισελθητε εκει κατοικειν

For Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘As my anger and my wrath has been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you, when you enter into Egypt; and you will be an object of horror, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you will see this place no more.’

^[49:18] οτι ουτως ειπεν κυριος καθως εσταξεν ο θυμος μου επι τους κατοικουντας ιερουσαλημ ουτως σταξει ο θυμος μου εφ υμας εισελθοντων υμων εις αιγυπτον και εσεσθε εις αβατον και υποχειριοι και εις αραν και εις ονειδισμον και ου μη ιδητε ουκετι τον τοπον τουτον

For you have dealt deceitfully against your own souls; for you sent me to Yahweh your God, saying, ‘Pray for us to Yahweh our God; and according to all that Yahweh our God says, so declare to us, and we will do it.’

For ye dissembled H8582 (HiphPerf) in your hearts,^§ H5315 when ye sent H7971 (QalPerf) me unto the Lord H3068 your God, H430 saying, H559 (QalInf) Pray H6419 (HithImpv) for us unto the Lord H3068 our God; H430 and according unto all that the Lord H3068 our God H430 shall say, H559 (QalImpf) so declare H5046 (HiphImpv) unto us, and we will do H6213 (QalPerf) it.

then Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men spoke, saying to Jeremiah, “You speak falsely. Yahweh our God has not sent you to say, ‘You shall not go into Egypt to live there;’

Then Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,

^[50:8] και εγενετο λογος κυριου προς ιερεμιαν εν ταφνας λεγων

Tell them, Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne on these stones that I have hidden; and he will spread his royal pavilion over them.

^[50:10] και ερεις ουτως ειπεν κυριος ιδου εγω αποστελλω και αξω ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεα βαβυλωνος και θησει αυτου τον θρονον επανω των λιθων τουτων ων κατεκρυψας και αρει τα οπλα αυτου επ αυτους

The word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews who lived in the land of Egypt, who lived at Migdol, and at Tahpanhes, and at Memphis, and in the country of Pathros, saying,
