After that, his brother came out, and his hand had hold on Esau’s heel. He was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them.

και μετα τουτο εξηλθεν ο αδελφος αυτου και η χειρ αυτου επειλημμενη της πτερνης ησαυ και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου ιακωβ ισαακ δε ην ετων εξηκοντα οτε ετεκεν αυτους ρεβεκκα

The boys grew. Esau was a skillful hunter, a man of the field. Jacob was a quiet man, living in tents.

Now Isaac loved Esau, because he ate his venison. Rebekah loved Jacob.

ηγαπησεν δε ισαακ τον ησαυ οτι η θηρα αυτου βρωσις αυτω ρεβεκκα δε ηγαπα τον ιακωβ

Jacob boiled stew. Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.

ηψησεν δε ιακωβ εψεμα ηλθεν δε ησαυ εκ του πεδιου εκλειπων

Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with some of that red stew, for I am famished.” Therefore his name was called Edom.°

Genesis 25:30 “Edom” means “red”.

και ειπεν ησαυ τω ιακωβ γευσον με απο του εψεματος του πυρρου τουτου οτι εκλειπω δια τουτο εκληθη το ονομα αυτου εδωμ

Esau said, “Behold, I am about to die. What good is the birthright to me?”

ειπεν δε ησαυ ιδου εγω πορευομαι τελευταν και ινα τι μοι ταυτα τα πρωτοτοκια

Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew. He ate and drank, rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

ην δε ησαυ ετων τεσσαρακοντα και ελαβεν γυναικα ιουδιν την θυγατερα βεηρ του χετταιου και την βασεμμαθ θυγατερα αιλων του ευαιου

When Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said to him, “My son?” He said to him, “Here I am.”

Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

ρεβεκκα δε ηκουσεν λαλουντος ισαακ προς ησαυ τον υιον αυτου επορευθη δε ησαυ εις το πεδιον θηρευσαι θηραν τω πατρι αυτου

Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Behold, I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying,

Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man.

Rebekah took the good clothes of Esau, her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob, her younger son.

και λαβουσα ρεβεκκα την στολην ησαυ του υιου αυτης του πρεσβυτερου την καλην η ην παρ αυτη εν τω οικω ενεδυσεν ιακωβ τον υιον αυτης τον νεωτερον

Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn. I have done what you asked me to do. Please arise, sit and eat of my venison, that your soul may bless me.”

και ειπεν ιακωβ τω πατρι αυτου εγω ησαυ ο πρωτοτοκος σου εποιησα καθα ελαλησας μοι αναστας καθισον και φαγε της θηρας μου οπως ευλογηση με η ψυχη σου

Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.”

And Isaac H3327 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jacob, H3290 Come near, H5066 (QalImpv) I pray thee, that I may feel H4184 (QalImpf) thee, my son, H1121 whether thou [be] my very H2088 son H1121 Esau H6215 or not.

ειπεν δε ισαακ τω ιακωβ εγγισον μοι και ψηλαφησω σε τεκνον ει συ ει ο υιος μου ησαυ η ου

Jacob went near to Isaac his father. He felt him, and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.”

ηγγισεν δε ιακωβ προς ισαακ τον πατερα αυτου και εψηλαφησεν αυτον και ειπεν η μεν φωνη φωνη ιακωβ αι δε χειρες χειρες ησαυ

He didn’t recognize him, because his hands were hairy, like his brother Esau’s hands. So he blessed him.

And he discerned H5234 (HiphPerf) him not, because his hands H3027 were hairy, H8163 as his brother H251 Esau’s H6215 hands: H3027 so he blessed H1288 (PielImpf) him.

και ουκ επεγνω αυτον ησαν γαρ αι χειρες αυτου ως αι χειρες ησαυ του αδελφου αυτου δασειαι και ηυλογησεν αυτον

He said, “Are you really my son Esau?” He said, “I am.”

και ειπεν συ ει ο υιος μου ησαυ ο δε ειπεν εγω

As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, and Jacob had just gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

και εγενετο μετα το παυσασθαι ισαακ ευλογουντα ιακωβ τον υιον αυτου και εγενετο ως εξηλθεν ιακωβ απο προσωπου ισαακ του πατρος αυτου και ησαυ ο αδελφος αυτου ηλθεν απο της θηρας

Isaac his father said to him, “Who are you?” He said, “I am your son, your firstborn, Esau.”

And Isaac H3327 his father H1 said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Who [art] thou? And he said, H559 (QalImpf) I [am] thy son, H1121 thy firstborn H1060 Esau. H6215

και ειπεν αυτω ισαακ ο πατηρ αυτου τις ει συ ο δε ειπεν εγω ειμι ο υιος σου ο πρωτοτοκος ησαυ

When Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with an exceedingly great and bitter cry, and said to his father, “Bless me, even me also, my father.”

εγενετο δε ηνικα ηκουσεν ησαυ τα ρηματα ισαακ του πατρος αυτου ανεβοησεν φωνην μεγαλην και πικραν σφοδρα και ειπεν ευλογησον δη καμε πατερ

Isaac answered Esau, “Behold, I have made him your lord, and all his brothers I have given to him for servants. I have sustained him with grain and new wine. What then will I do for you, my son?”

And Isaac H3327 answered H6030 (QalImpf) and said H559 (QalImpf) unto Esau, H6215 Behold, I have made H7760 (QalPerf) him thy lord, H1376 and all his brethren H251 have I given H5414 (QalPerf) to him for servants; H5650 and with corn H1715 and wine H8492 have I sustained H5564 (QalPerf) him: and what shall I do H6213 (QalImpf) now H645 unto thee, my son? αποκριθεις δε ισαακ ειπεν τω ησαυ ει κυριον αυτον εποιησα σου και παντας τους αδελφους αυτου εποιησα αυτου οικετας σιτω και οινω εστηρισα αυτον σοι δε τι ποιησω τεκνον

Esau said to his father, “Do you have just one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, my father.” Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

ειπεν δε ησαυ προς τον πατερα αυτου μη ευλογια μια σοι εστιν πατερ ευλογησον δη καμε πατερ κατανυχθεντος δε ισαακ ανεβοησεν φωνην ησαυ και εκλαυσεν

Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him. Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

και ενεκοτει ησαυ τω ιακωβ περι της ευλογιας ης ευλογησεν αυτον ο πατηρ αυτου ειπεν δε ησαυ εν τη διανοια εγγισατωσαν αι ημεραι του πενθους του πατρος μου ινα αποκτεινω ιακωβ τον αδελφον μου

The words of Esau, her elder son, were told to Rebekah. She sent and called Jacob, her younger son, and said to him, “Behold, your brother Esau comforts himself about you by planning to kill you.

And these words H1697 of Esau H6215 her elder H1419 son H1121 were told H5046 (HophImpf) to Rebekah: H7259 and she sent H7971 (QalImpf) and called H7121 (QalImpf) Jacob H3290 her younger H6996 son, H1121 and said H559 (QalImpf) unto him, Behold, thy brother H251 Esau, H6215 as touching thee, doth comfort H5162 (HithPtc) himself, [purposing] to kill H2026 (QalInf) thee.

απηγγελη δε ρεβεκκα τα ρηματα ησαυ του υιου αυτης του πρεσβυτερου και πεμψασα εκαλεσεν ιακωβ τον υιον αυτης τον νεωτερον και ειπεν αυτω ιδου ησαυ ο αδελφος σου απειλει σοι του αποκτειναι σε

Isaac sent Jacob away. He went to Paddan Aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

And Isaac H3327 sent away H7971 (QalImpf) Jacob: H3290 and he went H3212 (QalImpf) to Padanaram H6307 unto Laban, H3837 son H1121 of Bethuel H1328 the Syrian, H761 the brother H251 of Rebekah, H7259 Jacob’s H3290 and Esau’s H6215 mother. H517

και απεστειλεν ισαακ τον ιακωβ και επορευθη εις την μεσοποταμιαν προς λαβαν τον υιον βαθουηλ του συρου αδελφον δε ρεβεκκας της μητρος ιακωβ και ησαυ

Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan Aram, to take him a wife from there, and that as he blessed him he gave him a command, saying, “You shall not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;”

When Esau H6215 saw H7200 (QalImpf) that Isaac H3327 had blessed H1288 (PielPerf) Jacob, H3290 and sent him away H7971 (PielPerf) to Padanaram, H6307 to take H3947 (QalInf) him a wife H802 from thence; and that as he blessed H1288 (PielInf) him he gave him a charge, H6680 (PielImpf) saying, H559 (QalInf) Thou shalt not take H3947 (QalImpf) a wife H802 of the daughters H1323 of Canaan; H3667

ειδεν δε ησαυ οτι ευλογησεν ισαακ τον ιακωβ και απωχετο εις την μεσοποταμιαν συριας λαβειν εαυτω εκειθεν γυναικα εν τω ευλογειν αυτον και ενετειλατο αυτω λεγων ου λημψη γυναικα απο των θυγατερων χανααν

Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan didn’t please Isaac, his father.

And Esau H6215 seeing H7200 (QalImpf) that the daughters H1323 of Canaan H3667 pleased H5869 not H7451 Isaac H3327 his father; H1

και ειδεν ησαυ οτι πονηραι εισιν αι θυγατερες χανααν εναντιον ισαακ του πατρος αυτου

So Esau went to Ishmael, and took, in addition to the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

Then went H3212 (QalImpf) Esau H6215 unto Ishmael, H3458 and took H3947 (QalImpf) unto the wives H802 which he had Mahalath H4258 the daughter H1323 of Ishmael H3458 Abraham’s H85 son, H1121 the sister H269 of Nebajoth, H5032 to be his wife. H802

και επορευθη ησαυ προς ισμαηλ και ελαβεν την μαελεθ θυγατερα ισμαηλ του υιου αβρααμ αδελφην ναβαιωθ προς ταις γυναιξιν αυτου γυναικα

Jacob sent messengers in front of him to Esau, his brother, to the land of Seir, the field of Edom.

And Jacob H3290 sent H7971 (QalImpf) messengers H4397 before him H6440 to Esau H6215 his brother H251 unto the land H776 of Seir, H8165 the country H7704 of Edom. H123

^[32:4] απεστειλεν δε ιακωβ αγγελους εμπροσθεν αυτου προς ησαυ τον αδελφον αυτου εις γην σηιρ εις χωραν εδωμ

He commanded them, saying, “This is what you shall tell my lord, Esau: ‘This is what your servant, Jacob, says. I have lived as a foreigner with Laban, and stayed until now.

And he commanded H6680 (PielImpf) them, saying, H559 (QalInf) Thus shall ye speak H559 (QalImpf) unto my lord H113 Esau; H6215 Thy servant H5650 Jacob H3290 saith H559 (QalPerf) thus, I have sojourned H1481 (QalPerf) with Laban, H3837 and stayed there H309 (QalImpf) until now:

The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, “We came to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.”

And the messengers H4397 returned H7725 (QalImpf) to Jacob, H3290 saying, H559 (QalInf) We came H935 (QalPerf) to thy brother H251 Esau, H6215 and also he cometh H1980 (QalActPtc) to meet thee, H7125 (QalInf) and four hundred H3967 men H376 with him.

^[32:7] και ανεστρεψαν οι αγγελοι προς ιακωβ λεγοντες ηλθομεν προς τον αδελφον σου ησαυ και ιδου αυτος ερχεται εις συναντησιν σοι και τετρακοσιοι ανδρες μετ αυτου

He said, “If Esau comes to the one company, and strikes it, then the company which is left will escape.”

And said, H559 (QalImpf) If Esau H6215 come H935 (QalImpf) to the one H259 company, H4264 and smite it, H5221 (HiphPerf) then the other company H4264 which is left H7604 (NiphPtc) shall escape. H6413

^[32:9] και ειπεν ιακωβ εαν ελθη ησαυ εις παρεμβολην μιαν και εκκοψη αυτην εσται η παρεμβολη η δευτερα εις το σωζεσθαι

Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau; for I fear him, lest he come and strike me and the mothers with the children.

^[32:12] εξελου με εκ χειρος του αδελφου μου ησαυ οτι φοβουμαι εγω αυτον μηποτε ελθων παταξη με και μητερα επι τεκνοις

He stayed there that night, and took from that which he had with him a present for Esau, his brother:

^[32:14] και εκοιμηθη εκει την νυκτα εκεινην και ελαβεν ων εφερεν δωρα και εξαπεστειλεν ησαυ τω αδελφω αυτου

He commanded the foremost, saying, “When Esau, my brother, meets you, and asks you, saying, ‘Whose are you? Where are you going? Whose are these before you?’

^[32:18] και ενετειλατο τω πρωτω λεγων εαν σοι συναντηση ησαυ ο αδελφος μου και ερωτα σε λεγων τινος ει και που πορευη και τινος ταυτα τα προπορευομενα σου

Then you shall say, ‘They are your servant, Jacob’s. It is a present sent to my lord, Esau. Behold, he also is behind us.’ ”

^[32:19] ερεις του παιδος σου ιακωβ δωρα απεσταλκεν τω κυριω μου ησαυ και ιδου αυτος οπισω ημων

He commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the herds, saying, “This is how you shall speak to Esau, when you find him.

^[32:20] και ενετειλατο τω πρωτω και τω δευτερω και τω τριτω και πασι τοις προπορευομενοις οπισω των ποιμνιων τουτων λεγων κατα το ρημα τουτο λαλησατε ησαυ εν τω ευρειν υμας αυτον

Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau was coming, and with him four hundred men. He divided the children between Leah, Rachel, and the two servants.

And Jacob H3290 lifted up H5375 (QalImpf) his eyes, H5869 and looked, H7200 (QalImpf) and, behold, Esau H6215 came, H935 (QalActPtc) and with him four H702 hundred H3967 men. αναβλεψας δε ιακωβ ειδεν και ιδου ησαυ ο αδελφος αυτου ερχομενος και τετρακοσιοι ανδρες μετ αυτου και επιδιειλεν ιακωβ τα παιδια επι λειαν και ραχηλ και τας δυο παιδισκας

Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, fell on his neck, kissed him, and they wept.

Esau said, “Let me now leave with you some of the people who are with me.” He said, “Why? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”

ειπεν δε ησαυ καταλειψω μετα σου απο του λαου του μετ εμου ο δε ειπεν ινα τι τουτο ικανον οτι ευρον χαριν εναντιον σου κυριε

So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir.

ειπεν δε ο θεος προς ιακωβ αναστας αναβηθι εις τον τοπον βαιθηλ και οικει εκει και ποιησον εκει θυσιαστηριον τω θεω τω οφθεντι σοι εν τω αποδιδρασκειν σε απο προσωπου ησαυ του αδελφου σου
