This is the history of the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives. Joseph brought an evil report of them to their father.

These are the generations H8435 of Jacob. Come now therefore, and let’s kill him, and cast him into one of the pits, and we will say, ‘An evil animal has devoured him.’ We will see what will become of his dreams.”

νυν ουν δευτε αποκτεινωμεν αυτον και ριψωμεν αυτον εις ενα των λακκων και ερουμεν θηριον πονηρον κατεφαγεν αυτον και οψομεθα τι εσται τα ενυπνια αυτου

When Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him;

And it came to pass, when Joseph H3130 was come H935 (QalPerf) unto his brethren, H251 that they stript H6584 (HiphImpf) H853 Joseph H3130 out of H854 his coat, H3801 his coat H3801 of many colours H6446 that was on him;

εγενετο δε ηνικα ηλθεν ιωσηφ προς τους αδελφους αυτου εξεδυσαν τον ιωσηφ τον χιτωνα τον ποικιλον τον περι αυτον

Come, and let’s sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not let our hand be on him; for he is our brother, our flesh.” His brothers listened to him.

Genesis 37:27 Heb. hearkened

δευτε αποδωμεθα αυτον τοις ισμαηλιταις τουτοις αι δε χειρες ημων μη εστωσαν επ αυτον οτι αδελφος ημων και σαρξ ημων εστιν ηκουσαν δε οι αδελφοι αυτου

At that time, Judah went down from his brothers, and visited a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

εγενετο δε εν τω καιρω εκεινω κατεβη ιουδας απο των αδελφων αυτου και αφικετο εως προς ανθρωπον τινα οδολλαμιτην ω ονομα ιρας

She yet again bore a son, and named him Shelah. He was at Chezib when she bore him.

And she yet again conceived, H3254 (HiphImpf) and bare H3205 (QalImpf) a son; H1121 and called H7121 (QalImpf) his name H8034 Shelah: H7956 and he was at Chezib, H3580 when she bare H3205 (QalInf) him.

και προσθεισα ετι ετεκεν υιον και εκαλεσεν το ονομα αυτου σηλωμ αυτη δε ην εν χασβι ηνικα ετεκεν αυτους

Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in Yahweh’s sight. So Yahweh killed him.

And Er, H6147 Judah’s H3063 firstborn, H1060 was wicked H7451 in the sight H5869 of the Lord; H3068 and the Lord H3068 slew H4191 (HiphImpf) him.

εγενετο δε ηρ πρωτοτοκος ιουδα πονηρος εναντιον κυριου και απεκτεινεν αυτον ο θεος

Onan knew that the offspring wouldn’t be his; and when he went in to his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother.

And Onan H209 knew H3045 (QalImpf) that the seed H2233 should not be his; and it came to pass, when H518 he went in H935 (QalActPtc) unto his brother’s H251 wife, H802 that he spilled H7843 (PielPerf) it on the ground, H776 lest H1115 that he should give H5414 (QalInf) seed H2233 to his brother. γνους δε αυναν οτι ουκ αυτω εσται το σπερμα εγινετο οταν εισηρχετο προς την γυναικα του αδελφου αυτου εξεχεεν επι την γην του μη δουναι σπερμα τω αδελφω αυτου

Then he asked the men of her place, saying, “Where is the prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has been no prostitute here.”

Then he asked H7592 (QalImpf) the men H582 of that place, H4725 saying, H559 (QalInf) Where is the harlot, H6948 that was openly^§ H5869 by the way side? H1870 And they said, H559 (QalImpf) There was no harlot H6948 in this H2088 place.

Genesis 38:21 Or, in Enajim

επηρωτησεν δε τους ανδρας τους εκ του τοπου που εστιν η πορνη η γενομενη εν αιναν επι της οδου και ειπαν ουκ ην ενταυθα πορνη

He returned to Judah, and said, “I haven’t found her; and also the men of the place said, ‘There has been no prostitute here.’”

και απεστραφη προς ιουδαν και ειπεν ουχ ευρον και οι ανθρωποι οι εκ του τοπου λεγουσιν μη ειναι ωδε πορνην

Judah said, “Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven’t found her.”

Genesis 38:23 Heb. become a contempt

ειπεν δε ιουδας εχετω αυτα αλλα μηποτε καταγελασθωμεν εγω μεν απεσταλκα τον εριφον τουτον συ δε ουχ ευρηκας

About three months later, Judah was told, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution.” Judah said, “Bring her out, and let her be burned.”

εγενετο δε μετα τριμηνον απηγγελη τω ιουδα λεγοντες εκπεπορνευκεν θαμαρ η νυμφη σου και ιδου εν γαστρι εχει εκ πορνειας ειπεν δε ιουδας εξαγαγετε αυτην και κατακαυθητω

In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb.

εγενετο δε ηνικα ετικτεν και τηδε ην διδυμα εν τη γαστρι αυτης

When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, “This came out first.”

εγενετο δε εν τω τικτειν αυτην ο εις προεξηνεγκεν την χειρα λαβουσα δε η μαια εδησεν επι την χειρα αυτου κοκκινον λεγουσα ουτος εξελευσεται προτερος

As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, “Why have you made a breach for yourself?” Therefore his name was called Perez.°

Genesis 38:29 Perez means “breaking out”.

And it came to pass, as he drew back H7725 (HiphPtc) his hand, H3027 that, behold, his brother H251 came out: H3318 (QalPerf) and she said, H559 (QalImpf) How hast thou broken forth?^§ H6555 (QalPerf) this breach H6556 be upon thee: therefore his name H8034 was called H7121 (QalImpf) Pharez.° H6557

Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian.

και ην κυριος μετα ιωσηφ και ην ανηρ επιτυγχανων και εγενετο εν τω οικω παρα τω κυριω τω αιγυπτιω

From the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, Yahweh blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake. Yahweh’s blessing was on all that he had, in the house and in the field.

And it came to pass from the time H227 that he had made him overseer H6485 (HiphPerf) in his house, H1004 and over all that he had, H3426 that the Lord H3068 blessed H1288 (PielImpf) the Egyptian’s H4713 house H1004 for Joseph’s H3130 sake; H1558 and the blessing H1293 of the Lord H3068 was upon all that he had H3426 in the house, H1004 and in the field. εγενετο δε μετα το κατασταθηναι αυτον επι του οικου αυτου και επι παντα οσα ην αυτω και ηυλογησεν κυριος τον οικον του αιγυπτιου δια ιωσηφ και εγενηθη ευλογια κυριου εν πασιν τοις υπαρχουσιν αυτω εν τω οικω και εν τω αγρω

He left all that he had in Joseph’s hand. He didn’t concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate. Joseph was well-built and handsome.

And he left H5800 (QalImpf) all that he had in Joseph’s H3130 hand; H3027 and he knew H3045 (QalPerf) not ought H3972 he had, save H518 the bread H3899 which he did eat. H398 (QalActPtc) And Joseph H3130 was a goodly H8389 person, and well H3303 favoured. H4758

και επετρεψεν παντα οσα ην αυτω εις χειρας ιωσηφ και ουκ ηδει των καθ εαυτον ουδεν πλην του αρτου ου ησθιεν αυτος και ην ιωσηφ καλος τω ειδει και ωραιος τη οψει σφοδρα

After these things, his master’s wife set her eyes on Joseph; and she said, “Lie with me.”

And it came to pass after H310 these things, H1697 that his master’s H113 wife H802 cast H5375 (QalImpf) her eyes H5869 upon Joseph; H3130 and she said, H559 (QalImpf) Lie H7901 (QalImpv) with me.

As she spoke to Joseph day by day, he didn’t listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her.

And it came to pass, as she spake H1696 (PielInf) to Joseph H3130 day H3117 by day, H3117 that he hearkened H8085 (QalPerf) not unto her, to lie H7901 (QalInf) by her, H681 or to be with her.

ηνικα δε ελαλει τω ιωσηφ ημεραν εξ ημερας και ουχ υπηκουσεν αυτη καθευδειν μετ αυτης του συγγενεσθαι αυτη

About this time, he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside.

And it came to pass about this time, H3117 that Joseph went H935 (QalImpf) into the house H1004 to do H6213 (QalInf) his business; H4399 and there was none of the men H376 H582 of the house H1004 there within.

εγενετο δε τοιαυτη τις ημερα εισηλθεν ιωσηφ εις την οικιαν ποιειν τα εργα αυτου και ουθεις ην των εν τη οικια εσω

When she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside,

And it came to pass, when she saw H7200 (QalInf) that he had left H5800 (QalPerf) his garment H899 in her hand, H3027 and was fled H5127 (QalImpf) forth, H2351

και εγενετο ως ειδεν οτι κατελιπεν τα ιματια αυτου εν ταις χερσιν αυτης και εφυγεν και εξηλθεν εξω

When he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

εν δε τω ακουσαι αυτον οτι υψωσα την φωνην μου και εβοησα καταλιπων τα ιματια αυτου παρ εμοι εφυγεν και εξηλθεν εξω

and as I lifted up my voice and cried, he left his garment by me, and ran outside.”

When his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, “This is what your servant did to me,” his wrath was kindled.

εγενετο δε ως ηκουσεν ο κυριος αυτου τα ρηματα της γυναικος αυτου οσα ελαλησεν προς αυτον λεγουσα ουτως εποιησεν μοι ο παις σου και εθυμωθη οργη

Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound, and he was there in custody.

And Joseph’s H3130 master H113 took H3947 (QalImpf) him, and put him H5414 (QalImpf) into the prison, H1004 H5470 a place H4725 where the king’s H4428 prisoners H615 were bound: H631 (QalPasPtc) and he was there in the prison. H1004 H5470

και λαβων ο κυριος ιωσηφ ενεβαλεν αυτον εις το οχυρωμα εις τον τοπον εν ω οι δεσμωται του βασιλεως κατεχονται εκει εν τω οχυρωματι

But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

But the Lord H3068 was with Joseph, H3130 and shewed H5186 (QalImpf) him mercy,^§ H2617 and gave H5414 (QalImpf) him favour H2580 in the sight H5869 of the keeper H8269 of the prison. H1004 H5470

Genesis 39:21 Heb. extended kindness unto him

και ην κυριος μετα ιωσηφ και κατεχεεν αυτου ελεος και εδωκεν αυτω χαριν εναντιον του αρχιδεσμοφυλακος

The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was responsible for it.

And the keeper H8269 of the prison H1004 H5470 committed H5414 (QalImpf) to Joseph’s H3130 hand H3027 all the prisoners H615 that were in the prison; H1004 H5470 and whatsoever they did H6213 (QalActPtc) there, he was the doer H6213 (QalActPtc) of it.

και εδωκεν ο αρχιδεσμοφυλαξ το δεσμωτηριον δια χειρος ιωσηφ και παντας τους απηγμενους οσοι εν τω δεσμωτηριω και παντα οσα ποιουσιν εκει

After these things, the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

And it came to pass after H310 these things, H1697 that the butler H8248 (HiphPtc) of the king H4428 of Egypt H4714 and his baker H644 (QalActPtc) had offended H2398 (QalPerf) their lord H113 the king H4428 of Egypt. H4714

εγενετο δε μετα τα ρηματα ταυτα ημαρτεν ο αρχιοινοχοος του βασιλεως αιγυπτου και ο αρχισιτοποιος τω κυριω αυτων βασιλει αιγυπτου

The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days.

And the captain H8269 of the guard H2876 charged H6485 (QalImpf) Joseph H3130 with them, and he served H8334 (PielImpf) them: and they continued a season H3117 in ward. H4929

και συνεστησεν ο αρχιδεσμωτης τω ιωσηφ αυτους και παρεστη αυτοις ησαν δε ημερας εν τη φυλακη

Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his cup bearer.

yet H5750 within three H7969 days H3117 shall Pharaoh H6547 lift up H5375 (QalImpf) thine head,^§ H7218 and restore H7725 (HiphPerf) thee unto thy place: H3653 and thou shalt deliver H5414 (QalPerf) Pharaoh’s H6547 cup H3563 into his hand, H3027 after the former H7223 manner H4941 when thou wast his butler. Genesis 40:13 Or, reckon

ετι τρεις ημεραι και μνησθησεται φαραω της αρχης σου και αποκαταστησει σε επι την αρχιοινοχοιαν σου και δωσεις το ποτηριον φαραω εις την χειρα αυτου κατα την αρχην σου την προτεραν ως ησθα οινοχοων

On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief cup bearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

Genesis 40:20 Or, reckoned

εγενετο δε εν τη ημερα τη τριτη ημερα γενεσεως ην φαραω και εποιει ποτον πασι τοις παισιν αυτου και εμνησθη της αρχης του αρχιοινοχοου και της αρχης του αρχισιτοποιου εν μεσω των παιδων αυτου

At the end of two full years, Pharaoh dreamed, and behold, he stood by the river.

And it came to pass at the end H7093 of two full H3117 years, H8141 that Pharaoh H6547 dreamed: H2492 (QalActPtc) and, behold, he stood H5975 (QalActPtc) by the river. H2975

εγενετο δε μετα δυο ετη ημερων φαραω ειδεν ενυπνιον ωετο εσταναι επι του ποταμου

In the morning, his spirit was troubled, and he sent and called for all of Egypt’s magicians and wise men. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

εγενετο δε πρωι και εταραχθη η ψυχη αυτου και αποστειλας εκαλεσεν παντας τους εξηγητας αιγυπτου και παντας τους σοφους αυτης και διηγησατο αυτοις φαραω το ενυπνιον και ουκ ην ο απαγγελλων αυτο τω φαραω

As he interpreted to us, so it was. He restored me to my office, and he hanged him.”

And it came to pass, as he interpreted H6622 (QalPerf) to us, so it was; me he restored H7725 (HiphPerf) unto mine office, H3653 and him he hanged. H8518 (QalPerf)

εγενηθη δε καθως συνεκρινεν ημιν ουτως και συνεβη εμε τε αποκατασταθηναι επι την αρχην μου εκεινον δε κρεμασθηναι

The seven thin and ugly cattle that came up after them are seven years, and also the seven empty heads of grain blasted with the east wind; they will be seven years of famine.

And the seven H7651 thin H7534 and ill favoured H7451 kine H6510 that came up H5927 (QalActPtc) after them H310 are seven H7651 years; H8141 and the seven H7651 empty H7386 ears H7641 blasted H7710 (QalPasPtc) with the east wind H6921 shall be seven H7651 years H8141 of famine. H7458

και αι επτα βοες αι λεπται αι αναβαινουσαι οπισω αυτων επτα ετη εστιν και οι επτα σταχυες οι λεπτοι και ανεμοφθοροι εσονται επτα ετη λιμου

The food will be to supply the land against the seven years of famine, which will be in the land of Egypt; so that the land will not perish through the famine.”

And that food H400 shall be for store H6487 to the land H776 against the seven H7651 years H8141 of famine, H7458 which shall be in the land H776 of Egypt; H4714 that the land H776 perish H3772 (NiphImpf) not^§ through the famine. H7458

Genesis 41:36 Heb. be not cut off

και εσται τα βρωματα πεφυλαγμενα τη γη εις τα επτα ετη του λιμου α εσονται εν γη αιγυπτω και ουκ εκτριβησεται η γη εν τω λιμω

You shall be over my house. All my people will be ruled according to your word. Only in the throne I will be greater than you.”

thou shalt be H1961 (QalImpf) over my house, H1004 and according unto thy word H6310 shall all my people H5971 be ruled:^§ H5401 (QalImpf) only in the throne H3678 will I be greater H1431 (QalImpf) than thou.

Genesis 41:40 Heb. armed, or, kiss

συ εση επι τω οικω μου και επι τω στοματι σου υπακουσεται πας ο λαος μου πλην τον θρονον υπερεξω σου εγω

He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities. He stored food in each city from the fields around that city.

και συνηγαγεν παντα τα βρωματα των επτα ετων εν οις ην η ευθηνια εν γη αιγυπτου και εθηκεν τα βρωματα εν ταις πολεσιν βρωματα των πεδιων της πολεως των κυκλω αυτης εθηκεν εν αυτη

The seven years of plenty, that were in the land of Egypt, came to an end.

And the seven H7651 years H8141 of plenteousness, H7647 that was in the land H776 of Egypt, H4714 were ended. H3615 (QalImpf)

παρηλθον δε τα επτα ετη της ευθηνιας α εγενοντο εν γη αιγυπτω

The seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

And the seven H7651 years H8141 of dearth H7458 began H2490 (HiphImpf) to come, H935 (QalInf) according as Joseph H3130 had said: H559 (QalPerf) and the dearth H7458 was in all lands; H776 but in all the land H776 of Egypt H4714 there was bread. H3899

και ηρξαντο τα επτα ετη του λιμου ερχεσθαι καθα ειπεν ιωσηφ και εγενετο λιμος εν παση τη γη εν δε παση γη αιγυπτου ησαν αρτοι
