Fields will be bought in this land, about which you say, ‘It is desolate, without man or animal. It is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’

‘While men come to fight with the Chaldeans, and to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have killed in my anger and in my wrath, and for all whose wickedness I have hidden my face from this city,

But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, we said, ‘Come! Let’s go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans, and for fear of the army of the Syrians; so we will dwell at Jerusalem.’”

Pharaoh’s army had come out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they withdrew from Jerusalem.

Then Pharaoh’s H6547 army H2428 was come forth H3318 (QalPerf) out of Egypt: H4714 and when the Chaldeans H3778 that besieged H6696 (QalActPtc) Jerusalem H3389 heard H8085 (QalImpf) tidings H8088 of them, they departed H5927 (NiphImpf) from Jerusalem. H3389

The Chaldeans will come again, and fight against this city. They will take it and burn it with fire.”’

“Yahweh says, ‘Don’t deceive yourselves, saying, “The Chaldeans will surely depart from us;” for they will not depart.

For though you had struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and only wounded men remained among them, they would each rise up in his tent and burn this city with fire.’”

When the army of the Chaldeans had withdrawn from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,

And it came to pass, that when the army H2428 of the Chaldeans H3778 was broken up^§ H5927 (NiphInf) from Jerusalem H3389 for fear H6440 of Pharaoh’s H6547 army, H2428

When he was in Benjamin’s gate, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”

Then Jeremiah said, “That is false! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he didn’t listen to him; so Irijah seized Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.

“Yahweh says, ‘He who remains in this city will die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence, but he who goes out to the Chaldeans will live. He will escape with his life and he will live.’

But if you will not go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then this city will be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they will burn it with fire, and you won’t escape out of their hand.’”

^[45:18] και εαν μη εξελθης δοθησεται η πολις αυτη εις χειρας των χαλδαιων και καυσουσιν αυτην εν πυρι και συ ου μη σωθης

Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Jews who have defected to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.”

And Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 said H559 (QalImpf) unto Jeremiah, H3414 I am afraid H1672 (QalActPtc) of the Jews H3064 that are fallen H5307 (QalPerf) to the Chaldeans, H3778 lest they deliver H5414 (QalImpf) me into their hand, H3027 and they mock H5953 (HithPerf) me.

They will bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans. You won’t escape out of their hand, but will be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon. You will cause this city to be burned with fire.’”

^[45:23] και τας γυναικας σου και τα τεκνα σου εξαξουσιν προς τους χαλδαιους και συ ου μη σωθης οτι εν χειρι βασιλεως βαβυλωνος συλλημφθηση και η πολις αυτη κατακαυθησεται

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued them, and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. When they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath; and he pronounced judgment on him.

But the Chaldeans’ H3778 army H2428 pursued H7291 (QalImpf) after H310 them, and overtook H5381 (HiphImpf) Zedekiah H6667 in the plains H6160 of Jericho: H3405 and when they had taken H3947 (QalImpf) him, they brought him up H5927 (HiphImpf) to Nebuchadnezzar H5019 king H4428 of Babylon H894 to Riblah H7247 in the land H776 of Hamath, H2574 where he gave H1696 (PielImpf) judgment H4941 upon him.^§

Jeremiah 39:5 Heb. spake with him judgments

The Chaldeans burned the king’s house and the people’s houses with fire and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

And the Chaldeans H3778 burned H8313 (QalPerf) the king’s H4428 house, H1004 and the houses H1004 of the people, H5971 with fire, H784 and brake down H5422 (QalPerf) the walls H2346 of Jerusalem. H3389

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan swore to them and to their men, saying, “Don’t be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.

^[47:9] και ωμοσεν αυτοις γοδολιας και τοις ανδρασιν αυτων λεγων μη φοβηθητε απο προσωπου των παιδων των χαλδαιων κατοικησατε εν τη γη και εργασασθε τω βασιλει βαβυλωνος και βελτιον εσται υμιν

As for me, behold, I will dwell at Mizpah, to stand before the Chaldeans who will come to us; but you, gather wine and summer fruits and oil, and put them in your vessels, and dwell in your cities that you have taken.”
